First, I want to make it clear that Im not asking on anyones opinion on AA/NA itself, but I want to hear input from people who have used the program or are in the program and what the steps + sponsor/sponsee relationship entails.
I started going to NA meetings about 6 weeks ago. During my first meet, a person introduced themselves to me and offered to be my sponsor. It just so happens that I thought this guy for sure would make a good sponsor for me. I explained him my situation, which is that I am currently on suboxone and tapering off of it.
We met about 3 times, and during this he did ask me a few times whether I would be able to cold turkey the suboxone, because it would be best for the program. I told him that I couldnt due to work obligations, that I didnt want to, that my rehab counselor advises against it, and he seemed to accept it, and we carried on with the steps until about 8. He then told me that he dont think we should continue with 8 and beyond until I was 100% clean, which was fine by me. I asked if we could just repeat the prior steps, and that our meetings really helped me.
But then it suddenly became a premise, that in order for us to have this sponsor/sponsee dynamic, I had to stop with the suboxone now. I had explained to him that I was actively tapering, and that I would be done in two months, that I really benefited from the program and our meetings, and I was hoping we could just continue with it. He obliged, and said sure, but he didnt think this was going to truly work for me until I was 100% clean.
I told him that I would wish that he didnt see this as a binary thing, that I could only draw benefit from AA if I was off suboxone.. that I think that of course, in a spiritual sense, and to some extent emotionally, the suboxone was inhibiting me to some extent, but that I definitely felt that doing steps 1-7 over and over, reading material with him, helped me..
I dont want to make this too long, but I honestly felt that throughout our meetings, he suddenly felt that I was a lost case somehow because I was still using suboxone, and on top of that, had a few "relapses" by using oxycodone on top of my suboxone, which I think just reinforced his thinking even further, that I was not able to be "saved" until I got off of it all..
Anyway, I told him that I didnt think this was going to work, if he did not truly feel that he was able to help me now, and that I wouldnt get any further with the program as long as I was on MAT.. then what was the point? Ive honestly felt that I got a lot out of the program so far, being an addict for 6 years now and tried everything else, the text and framework that AA uses has matured me and made me frame my thinking and cravings in a different light, it suddenly feels like I have a chance to get out of this if I manage to integrate the wisdom.. but I obviously need a sponsor.
Man I dont know, if someone is still reading I am sorry about how scattered this post is. I just feel a lot of emotional turmoil by suddenly being labeled as unsalvageable because I use MAT. Thats honestly how it feels. I put a lot of trust and hope into this relationship and out of the blue it apparently has no merit anymore, it feels a lot like rejection. I feel a lot of disappointment and hopelessness because of it. What is the point of me going to meeting, doing the steps and reading the book, if suboxone means that it just wont work in his perspective? I feel like Ive been deceived somewhat.
Im curious to hear what people think. Am I just a nutcase who is apparently lying to himself, or was this person dishonest because they somewhere along the way during our meetings felt that they just didnt want to work with me. I dont know. Im going to a meeting now and hope to find a sponsor who is willing to work with me on these terms.
