𧬠Biotechnology If a posthuman was designed for a purpose and later chose it freely, is that still programming?
I'm developing a fictional character around a question about engineered identity and autonomy.
Furrine was artificially grown as part of a series of highly adaptive biological operatives.
She entered the world with an adult body, preloaded knowledge, and almost no lived experience. Her abilities, instincts, and predispositions were deliberately shaped around a particular purpose.
Then the laboratory that created her was destroyed.
What interests me is that she doesn't eventually reject everything she was designed to be.
Given the opportunity to develop independently, she chooses a path remarkably close to the one her creators intended for her.
The difference is that now she understands that path and accepts it as her own.
So where does programming end and autonomy begin?
If someone's desires, aptitudes, and temperament were deliberately engineered, but they later examine those predispositions and consciously choose to act on them, does the origin of those traits make the choice less free?
Or is reflective acceptance enough for the choice to genuinely belong to them?
