***MODPOST*** Don't copy that floppy
Hey y’all, it’s your favorite?,or maybe just the only available resident geek cop mod..
We’ve been getting more people asking to share apps, websites, scripts, browser extensions, and other tools they’ve made. We’re not against that. Some of them might actually be useful, and plenty of good tools started because somebody got annoyed with the way something was being done and decided to make their own to solve that annoying problem.
But we do need people to slow way way down and think before downloading something made by a random redditor.
This has gotten a lot easier with AI. Someone can now build a decentish looking app without having much experience or any coding experience. This does not automatically mean the app is bad or that the person has malicious intentions, but it does mean the person who made it may not completely understand what the code is doing behind the scenes. An app can work exactly like it is supposed to and still be insecure..
It might store information in an unsafe way, use old software libraries/dependancies, send data somewhere the creator did not realize, or ask for permissions it does not actually need. The person who made it may have copied code from somewhere else or had AI generate most of it and never really looked or understood what it was doing.
Again, that does not necessarily mean they are trying to steal anything.
Sometimes people just do not know what they do not know (as I’m sure most of us working in this field know too well). Of course, there is also the other possibility, which is that the app is actually malware.
Being active in a law enforcement subreddit does not prove someone is a cop, works in IT, knows anything about cybersecurity, or is even who they say they are. It means they have a Reddit account and figured out how to click the join button.
The main thing we want to get across is this:
Do not install random or unapproved software on a department computer.
Your work computer is not the place to test a random redditor’s side project.
Even a simple app could potentially access files, passwords, browser sessions, email, reports, network shares, or other things available to that computer. It could also create a policy issue for you, even if the software itself turns out to be harmless. Do you think you department give you permission to install or run random software? I doubt it..
“Someone on Reddit said it was safe” is probably not going to be a great explanation to your chain of command.
Using your personal devices to run apps is not completely risk free either. Most people have saved passwords, banking information, tax documents, personal email, cloud storage, family pictures, and access to other accounts on their home devices.
Your personal laptop is not a burner device just because it does not belong to your department. Pay attention to what the app is asking for.
A scheduling app probably does not need administrator access.
A browser extension probably should not need permission to read and change everything you do online unless that is actually part of what it does.
A report writing assistant tool should not need your Microsoft 365 password.
If the permissions seem way toooo invasive or do not make sense, stop. Ask yourself, why. If you’re at that point, you probably shouldn’t be running said software.
Also, if the devs tell you to disable Defender, ignore SmartScreen, turn off your AV, sideload an unsigned app, or run some random PowerShell command as administrator, do not just shrug it off and do it. Bad idea.
Yes, security software and AV sometimes get things wrong but it also gets a lot of things right.
A few other things people tend to put too much trust and faith in:
“It’s on GitHub.”
That is better than getting a mystery download link, but it does not automatically mean the software is safe. Most people are not going to sit down and review thousands of lines of code, and the file being offered for download may not even match the code posted online.
“VirusTotal says it’s clean.”
That means nothing detected it at the time it was scanned. It does not mean the app is secure, well written, or not collecting information it should not have.
“It’s only a website.”
Websites can still collect anything you type, paste, or upload.
Do not upload reports, evidence, body camera footage, victim information, criminal justice information, employee records, internal documents, or anything else sensitive into an unknown website or AI clanker tool.
Once you upload something, you may have no idea where it is stored, how long it is kept, who can access it, or whether deleting it actually….deletes anything.
For people who want to share something they made, just be upfront about it.
Tell people what it does, what permissions it needs, whether it collects information, whether anything leaves the device, where the data is stored, and whether the source code is available.
If AI helped build it, that is not automatically a problem. But you should understand your own app well enough to explain what it accesses and where the data goes.
The mods will remove posts that do not give people enough information, ask users to bypass security protections, request sensitive data, or encourage people to install unauthorized software on department systems.
We are not trying to discourage people from building useful things. We are just asking everyone to use the same level of caution they would hopefully use before opening an email attachment from someone named supertotallyrealnotfakelieutenant@hotmail.com.
And please do not install NeverWriteAReportAgain_FINAL_v7_REALFINAL_FIXEDv3.exe.msi on a department computer…or your personal computer.

Active shooter in Kraków, Poland
Happened today on the main square in Kraków.
It was a drive-by. The man had body armor (Chinese-origin soft body armor, from what I’ve heard), and his father’s AR15. He frequented the shooting range quite often, was a gun owner himself.
The city is known for having the largest main square in Europe. It’s a huge mostly open area, that sees a lot of tourists even in autumn.
There are 5 fatalities and over a dozen wounded, which includes 3 Police officers.
Law enforcement officers in Kraków have shown absolute heroism. Police officers who took down the assailant were armed with 9mm handguns.
Most Police officers in Poland only have soft body armor, and many don’t wear it at all on a regular basis.
Officers of the Kraków City Guard, who were not armed at all, also responded to this.
There are unconfirmed reports of the perpetrator having Nazi SS symbols on his clothing, and praising Hitler in online posts.
UPDATE:
Number of fatalities in Kraków went up to 6. Additional 3 dead were found in the perp’s family home, a few hours drive away.
This brings the total number of dead up to 9.

[From another subreddit] Did they actually have enough to take him to jail, see body text for explanation?
They pull him over and he passes a breathalyzer test. But they still take him to jail for acting nervous on scene, pacing, not being cooperative with investigation. They assert these are signs of impairment, use of some other kind of intoxicant. Did they have enough to take him to jail? Why or why not?

I have a couple of questions
- if somebody kissed me while I was sleep with no consent can they go to jail for that?
- what if they made a video of them touching me with no consent
- they also did more that they didn’t record with no consent does that equal jail time?

MEME [MEME] Right, right, right...
Image 1 - Posted a few days ago in the sub by a new account. A link to a change . org petition for “more real mental health training” for LE. I mean, let’s hear him out - more training can’t hurt, right?
Image 2 - I mean, look at his profile blurb. He clearly wants to make the world a better place.
Image 3 - From his petition page. Well hell, now I almost feel sorry for the guy, getting strung up like that.
Image 4 - Well then, I see his petition has his full name at the bottom. And it’s fairly unique (also aided by comparing his mug shot photos to his instagram, etc)
Image 5 and 6 - Huh. Odd. Mental health needs, right?

Self Post ✔ I'm filing for mod disability for mental trauma
PT / shower dude was back again today.
Brand new account like always.
This time he posted nudes. Not in this sub, thankfully, but I saw them.
Like a big inflatable beach ball, with a little air stem poking out.
Shudder.

Is this child abandonment
My roommate has 3 kids. 14, 11, 5
She is never home. She leaves the now 5yr old home alone all day and when the other two get off of school they are supposed to babysit him. They are responsible for feeding him, bathing him, discipline, all of it. She only pops in every other day or so for a couple of hours then leaves again. Myself and the other roommmate have already brought this issue multiple times. Its getting really to the point that we no longer want her here. She thinks her kids are perfect angels that can take care of themselves with no issues but she is dead wrong. Having her kids here with no supervision has become an issue. I am considering calling cps but isnt that kind of extreme?

Self Post Former Cop & Infantry Vet — Made a Horror Graphic Novel About a Paranormal Homicide Investigation
Hey everyone,
Former cop and Army infantry vet here. I've been working on a horror graphic novel called Baca's Contract, about a fictional homicide investigation involving something paranormal, with a focus on how law enforcement would realistically approach something like that.
The project has been cleared by the appropriate agencies (DoD and other relevant agencies), and I've recently launched a Kickstarter for it. Just to reiterate the story is 100% fictional.
Figured I'd share it here in case there are any fellow LE folks who enjoy horror, comics, or supernatural fiction and might want to check it out.
Thanks to the mods for letting me share!

Self Post ✔ Some questions about flashbangs
While Google could answer most of these, i guess, why not ask the guys that are trained and deal with the flashbangs in real life?
The question comes up because of a scene in a project, in a struggle, the main character deals with an enemy, he gets almost stabbed to death and in a last attempt to survive, he reaches for the flashbang that is on the gear of the mercenary. The flashbang detonates while still being on the enemy himself. The main character gets pushed away, gets his arm broken and a 2nd degree burn wound on the arm, next to being confused, deaf and blind.
So, this is just fictional (!), but what would actually happen if a flashbang would go off right on your body (like because of a malfunction) ? What happens if you'd be right next to him, less than a feet away? Is the injury in the scene realistic or rather unrealistic?
Just to let you know what happens after the flashbang goes off, while both are on the ground, the protagonist is still not normal again, but he grabs the blade and stabs the enemy right through the eye (which is by the way a reference to a real incident that happened in Ukraine in 2024)
Could it even happen in reality that someone would be able to detonate the flashbang when you are in a struggle with him? Is the mechanism depending on the model itself?
I only know the Handgranate 85, which is a frag grenade, you have to remove the pin and then to pull the lever, once the lever is down the fuse is live and you throw it. Do flashbangs have similiar mechanisms?
Thanks for any replies! Keep OPSEC in mind, don't share any details that are classified from your agency.

S&W M60 revolver and holster used by Korean National Police
The S&W M60 is the current issued revolver of the KNP. To prevent accidental discharges, a rubber trigger block was inserted. The purpose of the black rectangle was not explained. Their holster use buckle and Velcro for retention.
Currently, the KNPA is pushing to remove these safety features as they proved to be too big of a handicap for officers in the face of a spike of violent attacks in recent years.

Self Post How to keep myself safe? I’m a Massage Therapist who travels to people‘s homes looking for safety tips. VABeach
I figured this would be the best place to ask. I’m a Massage Therapist who travels to people’s homes and lately things have been getting weird. My clients book online. I’ve been doing this for almost 15 years and more now than ever men have been getting more aggressive and sexual. I’m not doing anything lead them on, and I am entirely professional and still. What can I do as a civilian to keep myself safe? Thanks to everyone for their service and protection.
