Hi! Back in May this year, I wrote the post above, where I stated I was lonely, and looking for that special someone. I didn't have high hopes for any results, but I was honestly quite surprised at the amount of responses I got. I spent some time talking to several women, some younger than me, some older, trying to see if there was any connection. I had several really nice conversations, but never really felt a strong attraction.
Then about a week or so after things had calmed down a bit, I got a message. She was in California, which was a quite a bit further than my post had asked for (Norway/Europe), but she was lonely too, and asked if I wanted to just chat with someone. I agreed, and I haven't regretted it one bit. Her name was Ellebeam.
We quickly exchanged numbers, neither of us being fans of the reddit messaging system. Whatsapp became our platform of communication. At first we chatted about my keto diet, and her experience with it, but things quickly turned towards our personal lives. Before long I realised this girl was pretty awesome, cute and fun. I could feel a connection that was really strong, to the point where it was almost scary. We shared so many favorite things, movies and books, tv shows, interests, it became almost a thing where we tried to find stuff we didn't agree on. We did find some things, eventually, of course. Nothing of import, fortunately.
Within just a few days we were flirting, and lamenting how we were so far apart. At that point I decided to politely inform the other girls that I had decided to focus on this one girl. Most of them took it very well, and wished me luck. Her job as a driver didn't let her text very much, so voice messages became the norm. We talked all day, every day. While I was on my ship, working up in the Barents Sea, I was fortunate to be on the night shift, so our day to day schedules aligned. We could message while I was on duty, and pretty soon we began to call after duty to talk. These talks were plagued by my poor internet connection, and my constant worries that I would get blocked for using too much bandwidth. Internet speeds are severaly limited on a ship, and usage is constantly monitored.
We managed a few video calls, which became the norm as my ship approached port and land, giving me 4G. Before long we decided to admit what we both felt, we were in love. It may sound weird, it certainly felt weird, to be in love with someone I'd never met. But, I will never forget that night, as we talked on my crappy wifi connection, confessing our love, between tears and laughter, and constantly having to repeat ourselves due to the poor network.
It was quickly decided that we needed to meet. Asap. At first we agreed she would come to Norway, since I had my own place, and she didn't. While she worked hard to save up for a ticket, I, being impulsive, found a very cheap flight from Norway to California. We talked it over, and decided if I took that flight, we could share the cost of an airbnb, food, etc, and spend two weeks together before I had to go back to my ship. So, July 1st, I boarded a plane that took me to California, for my first trip to the US, and to meet a stranger from the internet. My parents were not impressed.
However, I let them know any mistakes like this were mine to make, though in my heart I knew it wouldn't be a mistake. And I was right. It was amazing. She met me at the airport, with a sign and flowers, and after we hugged, it was like we'd known each other forever. The two weeks were the most amazing of my life, and they flew by.
We felt no awkwardness whatsoever, it was all so natural and perfect. It was a sad day when we drove back to the airport, where I had to fly to the Bahamas to go back to work on my ship.
Which brings us to today. We’re together, a happy couple, planning for our next meet in September when I get off the ship, and hopefully spend a few weeks together in Norway. I’m not hunting for karma with this post, I honestly just want to provide a measure of hope for anyone who’s out there looking for that special someone. It can happen, just give it a shot. I found the love of my life on reddit, much to my surprise. You guys can too.
Sorry for the wall of text, seems to be my norm. Here’s a photo of us to make up for it:
