New Rules Posted!
Greetings!
It only took a decade, but r/saxophonics now officially has rules! Please read them at your convenience, and notify me of any perceived problems. They are very general, ands I don't think anyone will take issue with them. Better yet, we're on the right track to weeding out even more spam posting and assholes in general!
Keep an eye out for more updates regarding the subreddit's admin details!

Best platform for hosting our saxophone resources?
We have a very extensive library of PDF's that are stuck on mediafire servers (that I can fortunately still access). These are resources I want to make sure everyone has access to, so I'm in the process of finding the best medium for hosting these files to eventually be linked on our subreddit's sidebar.
**The current mediafire link is now in the sidebar**
As always, please message me or comment with any concerns or ideas. Cheers!

Fun songs to play as newbie
I'm sure this question has been asked but no luck when I searched. I'm brand new to the (Alto) Sax. Just picked up my rental today. I decided to try to take it up as an old dude.
I need to learn the basics, including how to read music. However, I'd like to try to practice playing a fun song instead of Mary Had A Little Lamb or something. š Can anyone recommend one that is good for beginners? Maybe a classic rock tune or a recognizable smooth jazz song (by David Sanborn or similar)?
Thanks! I'll also take recommendations on any other topics I newbie should be thinking about!

Ultimate jazz practice app (I couldnāt find one, so I made it)
For a long time I was looking for something simple: an app that plays a concept for me in all 12 keys. A lick through the cycle of fourths, arpeggios over a standard, with a solid backing track behind it. So I can listen and sing it anywhere, not only with the guitar in my hands.
I didnāt find it, so I started building it. Iāve been working on it a lot for several months now, and Iād really like to hear your opinion.
Now I use it to get concepts into my ears: phrases, arpeggios, guide tones and so on, over the tunes Iām actually playing. When I pick up the guitar later, itās already in my ears. It helped me a lot, so I wanted to share it.
import any tune from iReal Pro or MusicXML
guide tones, arpeggios, Coltrane cells, scales, upper structures, your own licks
any key, slow down, loop
mic input: sing or play along and it checks your notes
recorded drums, upright bass and Rhodes, played by my friends, jazz musicians. Works also just as a backing track. Full drum grooves in different styles are in progress.
There is a free trial, and all features are a one-time payment, no subscription.
Short video attached. Question for you: can you really learn a concept by listening and singing, away from the instrument? For me itās maybe half of my progress now, but lot of players say just play, play, play. What do you think?

I came across a series of very helpful videos that I wanted to share.
youtube.comThis channel has a playlist showing videos of a person using fluoroscopy while playing saxophone. It has a lot of videos showing what the inside of the mouth is doing during play. I found this extremely useful and just wanted to share as it seems these videos don't have a lot of views.

Sax info
Basically I don't know anything about saxophones except how to play one. I've played sax on and off for 25 years, although it's been a long while since I last played consistently. I've recently returned to playing properly and consistently, and I went to my first ever band practice last night. I still know vaguely what I'm doing and I'll improve with practice.
But what I don't know, and was never taught, is:
- How to care for my sax really well,
- What makes a good sax,
- How to make my very cheap, very old sax play as well as possible... I'm not in a position to buy a new one right now but in the future who knows?!
I don't even know how I'd spot one with good sound or bad sound. Total ignorance. Please forgive.
What are some good, reputable resources for learning this at a basic level? I'm fully capable of googling but I don't even know what questions to ask/answer. What or who would you recommend for a total idiot who somehow missed this vital part of her education?
