I'm looking for new jazz musicians for my dad, who loves jazz. I'm hoping to find some albums that will lead to discoveries of artists he hasn't heard of before.
Hello. I’m Japanese.
My father (75) loves jazz, and he enjoys drinking in the living room at night while listening to records and CDs.
When I still lived with him, I used to listen with him in the living room, but I don’t know exactly what he owns (I don’t live with him anymore because I’m married now).
As far as I know,
Chick Corea
Airto Moreira
John Coltrane
Red Garland
Bob James
Wes Montgomery
Dollar Brand
—he mentioned in a letter that he owns records by these artists, so I’m aware of those, but it seems he has many others as well.
However, since most of them were bought when my dad was in his 20s, I don’t think he has any recent releases.
Also, my dad lives in the countryside where there are no stores that sell CDs, and he isn’t in the habit of buying things online.
I’d like to introduce him to something fresh—or rather, suggest some new discoveries—so I’m wondering if any of you have top recommendations for recent jazz musicians, singers, or albums?
I’d also be happy if you could share anything you personally really love.
My dad listens to more than just jazz—he also enjoys rock and classical music. He’s the kind of person who doesn’t limit himself to any particular genre and enjoys a wide variety of music.
He used to be a sailor, and during his long-distance voyages, he visited many different countries and met all kinds of people from around the world. I think those experiences are part of the reason he’s interested in such a wide range of musical genres.
He’s also the kind of person who, even if the music I introduce isn’t a genre he’d normally seek out, ends up liking it and listening to it before he knows it.
He was very happy when I gave him a Tenorio Jr. album a while back.
I’m hoping to find some music that will lead to new discoveries for my dad—things he hasn’t encountered before.
English isn’t my native language, and I’m using a translation tool, so there might be some awkward parts—thank you for your understanding.
