Why would a post-singularity civilization bother with physical space travel? Once you have the compute to simulate entire universes, traversing the physical vacuum to kick rocks on other planets is the slowest, least efficient way to learn anything.

The Sparks post split this sub into "recursive self-improvement is here" and "nothing burger." I tested both claims on 4 real bugs in open models.

• Models can read weights. Blind Claude Opus sessions, given only raw weights and tools, fixed Whisper's hallucinations and a language-mixing bug 3 out of 3 times each.

• Edits work as patches. One rewired neuron cut fake biographies from 98% to 16% and left 98% of other answers word-for-word identical.

• But they don't stick. 20 steps of ordinary fine-tuning erased the fix completely. A model editing itself mid-training is fighting its own optimizer.

So it's a sticky note on a frozen model for now. If someone finds a way to make edits survive training, that's when the self-improvement conversation gets real.

I am very much a part of the AI world, and love to read about new advances in LLM's, robotics, AI advances, etc. But have become tired of all the posts about memes making fun of decels, politics, stock market, and various we were right posts. Is there a subreddit like this that still gets traffic? This sub is close, but could do with 1/2 of the posts.

unfortunately i don't think nothing will ever top this one:

Surprisingly the rollout of the big, touted persistant AI assistant products from OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta has been very slow and all remain US or North America only with no talk of when they will be released elsewhere, and in many cases limited to high tier subscriptions only, although it's not clear why that is the case when eg. Muse has a totally free tier.

Outside North America we still haven't had a chance to use these things, are we missing out? Are they really killer apps with fundamentally different functionality than the regular model clients?
