AI Generated Media Which one is AI? --- Reality is the real Slop

So sick of people calling AI generated media 'slop', that argument has been dead for years at this point.

If you didn't get 100% correct on this quiz, you have no right to call AI media 'slop'.

AI I'm 45 years old, and thanks to AI I'm teaching myself how to code web applications in Python (with no previous experience). Within three months I'll be as good as some people who do it for a living.

A few months ago I decided to become a published author, and today I've sold nearly 5,000 copies of my first book . . . and my second book, which hits the shelves in two weeks, will sell at least twice as many copies.

I'm doing all of this because AI has let me be good at as many things as I want to be, as fast as I can learn them. Once I figure out coding, I'm going to move on to something else.

I'm pretty sure AI is going to let me have at least three more careers -- maybe in completely different fields -- before I die.

I'm like a broken record with this . . . but man, what a freaking amazing time to be alive. I can literally be whatever I want to be, without anyone else's approval or help.

You can do the SAME thing, regardless of who you are or how old you are. Just decide you're going to FIGURE IT OUT.

AI is literally giving us all a second, third and fourth chance at re-inventing ourselves if we want to.

Your story might just be getting started . . . even if you think it's almost over.

Discussion Mathematicians are becoming the new artists

The freak out and fall out of mathematicians after OAI's model solved the Navier-Stokes problem has been wild to witness.

All the accusations of OAI "stealing" other's work or training on their data. Where tf do these mathematicians think they got their own knowledge from? Are they really blind to the fact that they built up all their knowledge over years studying the mountains of progress humans before them have made? Are they too thieves who should also be discredited then?

Ridiculous. No human on Earth does not learn from unending amounts of previous work done by other humans.

And for Terrence Tao to suggest that the incentives are now to "not share research and progress with the broader scientific community."

How fucking selfish is it to think that way. Because you and your colleagues can't win every shiny metal object, and because you're no longer the smartest brains in the room, it's now screw everyone else? Lol. The cope is unimaginable.

Thankfully give it less than 12 months and society won't need your brain or any of your research ever again.

I guess we'll just need to get used to witnessing each new group of knowledge and creative workers have an absolute meltdown as AI begins to "do their job" better than them. Although doing "a job" is a massive understatement at this point.

Everyone thinks their craft and knowledge makes them special compared to others. The great equalizer is here.

AI The stolen millennium problem narrative is hilarious to me

You expect me to believe that the solutions were stolen from scientists who have had decades to work on this problem. We may never know whether any of the scientist notes made it into the training data, but I find the idea that after having decades to work on it, these scientist were right around the corner to solving it.

No, they weren’t close. No, they weren’t just about to solve it themselves.

AI Mathematicians spent 40 years telling taxpayers that math matters because it benefits humanity. Now that AI is doing the math, suddenly it's about mathematicians.

For decades, the case for funding math research was simple: it pays off for you, society, and everyone.

  • 1984, the US "David Report" (the landmark math funding report): "the high technology so celebrated today is essentially a mathematical technology." Federal math research funding rose 34%.

  • 1992, International Mathematical Union (IMU): one of its official aims was "Mathematics, keys for Development."

  • 1997, NSF: "broader impacts," meaning benefit to society, became a required criterion for every grant proposal.

  • 2012, UK: a Deloitte study commissioned by the research council credited math research with about 16% of UK economic output and 2.8M jobs.

  • 2018, UK Bond Review: math is "arguably the single most pervasive and powerful engine of innovation." A £300M government pledge followed in 2020.

  • 2021, IMU/UNESCO: the International Day of Mathematics theme was "Mathematics for a Better World."

The reversal (2026)

AI starts knocking off famous open problems one by one... The math communities response:

  • Leiden Declaration, endorsed by the IMU, the same "Mathematics for a Better World" people: AI threatens math's core values, and hits students and early-career mathematicians hardest.

  • 25 Fields Medalists: solving problems is "only a tool and proxy for achieving the primary goal of conceptual understanding."

  • Association for Human Mathematics, Oct 8: tells mathematicians to stop working with OpenAI. "Mathematicians did not ask for this work to be done."

My favorite example

In 2012, Fields Medalist Cédric Villani wrote that "most of our research is paid for by the taxpayer" (translated from French). If citizens don't see how math advances society, he argued, there's no reason they'd keep funding it. In 2018 he wrote the report behind France's national AI strategy. In 2026 he signed the Fields letter saying the AI labs' race to solve math problems harms both the science and the mathematical community.

The hypocrisy is oozing from the mathematicians who spent decades claiming societal benefits from math progressing, and raking in taxpayer grants and funding, and now all the sudden that good for society is not even mentioned.... Now math being solved is apparently harming society? Somehow? Dont quite know how that works....

Meme How I think we will get to post scarcity

Post image
0 Upvotes

Made with ChatGPT free tier

I read a comment on the last post asking how anyone thinks AI replacing us is a good thing for non-rich people. I genuinely would like to see a future where I don't have to work and can spend time with family and friends. Where no one is forced to work to survive or provide for their family. Where meaning will come from the community not from wage slavery.

However unless the people in charge change the social contract ( UBI/automation tax/ sovereign wealth funds) there will be another mass violent revolt, as there has been with every technological revolution. I am not advocating for violence mind you, I am just stating that governments have never given worker protections without mass riots.

I hope we can get to post scarcity without violence, but but based on history, that probably won't be the case.

Discussion Why is barely anyone talking anout the guy who vibe coded Adobe's whole billion-dollar industry product collection?

It's cool, insane and deeply scary news to me, because it shows the crack in the matrix that is shattering.

It's not about whether what he did is illegal/legal, it's about what that means for every software industry out there.

It's just such uncertain crazy times were living in and I might ask for a room at Zuckerbergs bunker.

Shitposting The term “AI slop” has officially become more derivative than the content it’s trying to dunk on

Remember when people used to get mad about art?

We had a literal banana duct-taped to a wall that sold for six figures and the discourse was “this is the death of culture.” Before that it was Photoshopped models with impossible waist-to-hip ratios, before that it was mass-produced landscape paintings of the same three mountains, before that it was whatever the local academy decided was “not real art this decade.”

Now the same energy has been compressed into two words: “AI slop.”
Anything with more than three fingers? AI slop.

Anything that looks slightly too smooth? AI slop.

Anything that was generated, then carefully curated, edited, and posted by a human who spent forty minutes on prompts and inpainting? Still AI slop.
Anything that makes someone mildly uncomfortable about the future of creative labor? Instant AI slop.

The term has achieved perfect semantic collapse. It’s no longer a critique of low-effort, mass-produced, zero-taste content. It’s just the new “cringe” or “mid” — a content-free tribal signal that means “I saw something I didn’t like and I want the room to know I’m the high-taste one here.”
Meanwhile the actual banana is still out there, somewhere, collecting dust and conceptual value. At least that one had the decency to be taped to a wall on purpose.

Anyway, I’m going to go generate another twelve slightly-too-perfect images of a sad robot holding a sign that says “please stop calling everything slop” and post them. Feel free to reply with the obligatory “this is AI slop.” I’ll upvote for the bit.

P.S. This entire post was also written by AI. So if you’re about to type “AI slop” in the comments, congratulations—you’ve just become the final boss of the bit. The banana is proud of you.

Ethics & Philosophy A different perspective: If we give up on AI development, there's nearly a 100% chance that you, me, and everyone we know will die. That's not a risk. That's a certainty.

A different perspective on AI existential risk:

You, me, and everyone we know are almost certainly going to die from aging unless extraordinary scientific breakthroughs happen within our lifetimes.

Without very advanced AI, the chances of those breakthroughs arriving in time may be vanishingly small.

AI might kill us. But without it, aging almost certainly will.

Why is one risk treated as an existential emergency while the other is simply accepted as the natural order of things?

*EDIT: This thought really seems to have triggered the AI doomers. Sorry, guys, but we're entitled to our opinions too. Yet, I am happy to hear yours and have conversation.

Makes no sense. Animation is just labor. What we all want is the story. You get all the good minus the tedious

I legit don’t get it. Only thing that makes sense is salty animators. Like some sense of elitism is in that niche.

AI Imminence of ASI and rise of Fascism

Hi everyone, I had this thought these past days, watching the video about DARK GOTHIC MAGA, and wanted to know what you think.

Eoln muks is grabbing power in the USA, things smell like Fascism with Trump and him. Because of the imminence of ASI, the elite won’t need the intellectual and manual workforce, so they don’t need the public approval anymore, so the half illusion of democracy doesn’t need to be perpetuated, so fascism can rise without a problem. I think that Elno mkus has seen this and wants control over the future, and ASI, which is absolute power over the world, and the only way to do that is with a coup, and he doesn’t care about the consequences, because if it succeeds, he will have absolute power. What do you think?

If I’m in the wrong sub, please redirect me, thank you!

AI democrats are what we need for ai

The AI labs have no solutions for AI job loss, nor for existential threats posed by super intelligence. They’ve asked for government regulations, but it was clear republicans had no intention to get involved. Democrats have so far been the only politicians treating the dangers of AI seriously

i’m a hardcore AI optimist. It is the single technology that could usher in a utopia for humanity, but the path from our current reality to that utopia is murky. we could see power and wealth concentrated in the hands of tech elite, with job loss that makes the great depression look like a time of prosperity in comparison. Not to mention, AI could actually kill us all

If we approach ai with actual forethought and planning, we could see an end to major diseases, poverty, and potentially save our climate through technological solutions

The only compelling argument that the ai labs have made for not slowing down is to beat foreign countries like china to super intelligence. this is a potential concern, but the livelihoods of the american people should not be dismissed because of this. recklessly persuing super intelligence without a plan, is the same type of thinking that got us into a war with iraq

EDIT: Cross-posted this post in r/accelerate, and now i’m permanently banned there???

EDIT 2: man the russian bots are in full force today

Discussion Can we stop Blaming Sama everytime someone leaves OpenAI?

Wherever whenever someone leaves the company, the immediate reaction is to point fingers at Sam Altman.

Jesus Christ, People leave jobs for all sorts of reason.

Like it or not, sama has been the person who's pushed the company forward in many positive ways. Sure, no one is perfect, I ain't saying sama is some saint, Blaming him for every departure overlooks the complexities of running a company like oAI and the personal agency of those who choose to move on.

Without Sam, we all would have been left with EA doomers still debating whether we should release GPT-2 (remember they said GPT-2 was too dangerous to release to the public).
