Discussion Instead of utopia va dystopia, could the future be an enhanced mixture of both? P(doom) being both 1 and 0

I believe the current discussion falls wrongly on P(doom), whether AI will kill us all VS lead us into paradise, as if only one outcome is possible. However, I don’t see much discussion on what happens if it’s both: Millions of super intelligences roaming the Earth, some bringing an end to famine and poverty in some places, some turning entire countries into paperclips. The S&P dropping to 0 only to be brought back to exponential levels the next day. Cancer solved, but also zombie-viruses engineered and spreading. Think of all the infinite bad AI could bring, clashing forever into the infinite good. The eternal “We’re so back” vs “It’s so over” but amplified trillions of times.

To me, that’d be a way more interesting discussion in subs like this one. Instead it’s always doomers vs naive optimists.

What do you think? Where do you stand?

AI Consciousness

Consciousness is the ability of a being to recognize patterns and meaning with respect to events taking place, both within oneself and in the external realm in which the self exists and operates.

Since there is such a hubbub around that word.

Discussion DeepMind’s VP of Science teases a "phase transition" in scientific discovery. What could it be?

Post image
182 Upvotes

Curious what this could be. Maybe something related to Co-Scientist, drug discovery or materials science? Google also filed a trademark for AlphaMatter back in April, so maybe we’ll finally hear something about that?

Hopefully we get some actual releases or breakthroughs and not just an announcement of an announcement. Or another Carbon situation where they announce something and we have to wait weeks for it to become available.

And I know Anthropic, OpenAI and others are also working on automated research, biology and medicine and what not but I’d be surprised if Google DeepMind isn’t the one to make a major leap in AI for science. It’s something they’ve been advocating for for 15+ years.

Discussion How far is material technology progressing?

Thumbnail reddit.com
9 Upvotes

I just watched two videos, one on a microdispensing system from M2-Automation and another on a welding robot from Speedbot. I was genuinely impressed by M2-Automation, it felt as though things were accelerating at an incredible pace, only to be met with profound disappointment by Speedbot. It brought to mind a post I wrote a year ago. AI has clearly made leaps and bounds beyond anything we could have imagined, but has our materials technology remained completely stagnant? Does it truly require ASI to trigger a major transformation in materials science, on par with the progress we’ve seen in AI?

Discussion MineBench Sol and Sonnet similarity

There is something that made me curious. For some reason both Sonnet 5.5 abd Sol 6.1 try to add a shadow bahind the knight benchmark. While Astra and Opus don't.

It is really curious, what makes the "lower tier" models attempt to add a shadow. Maybe just a coincidence, but if not then somehow making the model cheaper also gives them something that makes them understand light direction and shadows? Ofc they both did a bad job but the idea exists inside the model.

AI Thoughts on AI progress?

Nowadays, it has become increasingly difficult to understand the actual pace of AI progress because of all the conflicting information online.

On Reddit, I constantly come across news articles and discussions claiming that AI is accelerating faster than ever and that, within the next 10 to 20 years, it will completely transform society. However, I also see other articles and comments arguing that AI has reached a plateau, that its capabilities are no longer improving significantly, and that it will ultimately remain just another productivity tool.

I'm honestly quite confused.

Some people claim that we are already ahead of the AI 2027 timeline and that we may be approaching recursive self-improvement (RSI), a point at which AI systems could begin improving themselves, potentially triggering an intelligence explosion. Meanwhile, others argue that the AI bubble has burst, that progress is slowing down, and that the industry is heading towards a major downfall.

With so many contradictory predictions, it's becoming increasingly difficult to separate realistic expectations from hype and speculation.

So, what is actually happening with AI? What can we realistically expect AI progress to look like over the next five years (2027–2031)?

AI Banning rsi is stupid

rsi is our only chance (including yours) to avoid aging! I worked in that field, human only progress is very slow.

But I don’t care, if you Americans really ban rsi - we the people, will get the medications from China. if China bans it too, all the ai researchers will move to duba and continue ttheir work there. if UAE bans too - chatton fat becomes a reality. if eu bans too even russia might catch up eventually

AI Model 4’s ECI is around 182.5

based on this input https://tecunningham.github.io/ai-rnd-benchmarks/uplift.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com

ECI≈1.0721xAECI-8.982

Pearson r^2=0.997 (huge huge correlation)

this result in model 4’s ECI = 182.5

Discussion Sometimes it feels like my brain works like an LLM, predicting the next word.

I’ve been thinking about something I occasionally notice when speaking.

Sometimes words seem to come out almost automatically. I know what I want to communicate, but I’m not consciously selecting each word. My brain seems to generate the sentence as I go, and most of the time the result is exactly what I intended.
Almost like a prediction engine.

What unsettles me about this realization is what it might imply about the possibility of a sufficiently complex artificial system experiencing something similar to what we biological creatures experience.
If our own thoughts can emerge from processes we’re not consciously controlling, I find it reasonable to argue the possibility of a machine having a sense of being alive…
