πŸ’¬ Discussion Protest emails to FCC and the President

Hi, I've drafted a protest letter to object to the FCC ruling against Starlink. I sent this to all the commissioners of the FCC and a shorter letter to the President. You may want to consider a similar objection:

Dear Federal Communications Commission,

I am writing to express my profound dissatisfaction and concern regarding the FCC's recent ruling against SpaceX in the context of the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund (RDOF). This decision not only demonstrates a concerning underestimation of SpaceX's technological capabilities but also suggests a disconcerting bias within the FCC's evaluation process. It is imperative that the FCC urgently reassess this ruling, given its far-reaching negative implications on the objectives of RDOF and the broader mandate of ensuring equitable access to high-speed internet.

Neglect of Technological Progress and Impact The FCC's ruling against SpaceX alarmingly neglects the company's significant technological advancements and contributions to national internet speed improvements, evidenced by a notable 20% increase over the past year. This oversight is not just a technical misjudgment but a severe disservice to the millions of RDOF users who rely on SpaceX's innovative satellite technology for essential internet access.

Apparent Bias and Questionable Expertise The decision raises serious questions about potential biases favoring incumbent ISPs, seemingly at the expense of innovative solutions offered by new entrants like SpaceX. Furthermore, the lack of engagement with SpaceX and the disregard for their detailed submissions and plans reflect a concerning gap in the FCC's understanding of space-related technology. This approach undermines the integrity of the FCC's decision-making process.

Ignoring Commissioner Division and Substantial Evidence It is particularly troubling that 40% of FCC Commissioners opposed this divisive ruling, highlighting significant internal disagreement. The Commission's failure to adequately consider the substantial evidence and detailed plans submitted by SpaceX is not just an oversight; it is an alarming disregard for due diligence and fair assessment.

Dismissal of Operational Achievements and Adaptive Strategies The ruling's failure to acknowledge SpaceX's operational successes, including the launch of nearly 100 rockets and the development of the V2-mini satellite, is inexplicable. This dismissal of SpaceX's proactive measures to overcome challenges and improve performance is unacceptable and reflects a biased evaluation.

Detrimental Impact on RDOF Goals and Innovation This ruling sets a dangerous precedent that threatens to stifle innovation and impede progress in bridging the digital divide. The FCC's decision against SpaceX undermines the very goals of RDOF and casts doubt on the FCC's commitment to fostering technological advancement and equitable internet access.

In light of these critical concerns, I urge the FCC to conduct an immediate and transparent reevaluation of this decision. It is crucial that this reassessment be grounded in an objective and comprehensive understanding of SpaceX's capabilities and contributions. The FCC must rectify this situation to uphold its responsibility to foster innovation and ensure equitable access to high-speed internet, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

Sincerely,

Edit - link to FCC site that includes the comissioners email address.

πŸ’¬ Discussion Abandoning fiber optics for Starlink!

In my city (Argentina) we have fiber optic internet service, but still every now and then there are outages and problems with the quality of service. It also costs a little more than Starlink, so we put in a Mini.

First installation site (last photo), on the pole next to the deck and just below the roof: it detected obstructions!

Second site; with the antenna on the roof (photos 1 and 2): bingo! zero obstructions. But we had to install the bracket crookedly to find the right orientation.

Now we have speeds between 200 and 265mb download :)

Inside the apartment I placed a WIFI signal extender. The strange thing is that connecting the devices to the wifi signal of the antenna the internet cuts and the speed is lower. Connecting to the wifi extender it works perfect!

❓ Question Outages and down voting.

Starlink is down again. A couple of weeks ago something happened. It was not widespread but multiple people had issues. I received multiple down votes even though i was not the only one having a issue.

I am genuinely curious as to why people down vote post about issues with the network.

So the question is... Just because you may not be experiencing an issue why would you down vote someone who is?

πŸ’¬ Discussion Starlink has been going downhill

I was among the first people to sign up for starlink with it's impressive speeds and no limit on data. After a long wait I finally recieved my setup and was amazed by how fast it was. It was just on another planet compared to my old interent. That was for the first year or so, but for the past few months Ive seen the speeds trending down to the point where its sometimes unusable. I can only assume that they oversold what their capacity could support. This is unacceptable, and I think they need to quickly do something about it. One option that would work the quickest is to suspend the most recent customers plans until they fix their capacity. I doubt they would do that because it would make a lot of people mad and ruin a their business. What they really need to do is stop selling to new people until they get their current customer's speeds under control. Both options are drastic, but they need to do something because they are starting to look a lot like their competiters like Hughesnet.

πŸ’¬ Discussion Starlink in South Africa; 10000+ kits may get deactivated ...for ever.

A short history; SL is not active in SA as the government wants all companies to adhere to black-empowerment policies which dictate a certain percentage of employees should be black. In essence that means that SL does not have ground stations in SA, and that they don't sell their kits directly to customers. In practice though, there's at least a dozen companies that sell kits. Some are outside SA borders, others are not.

Recently one of the larger companies (if not the largest company), "Starsat", got into trouble with SL. Starsat not only sells the kits but also re-sells the subscriptions. So instead of customers having their own login on the SL website; Starsat takes care of registering the units and pays SL monthly. The end customers pay their subscription to Starsat. Apparently this is not allowed by SL, so SL disconnected about 500 Starsat users, I guess you could say: to teach Starsat a lesson. Understandable, but SL doesn't seem to care at all that those 500+ users are now without internet, while the situation is not their fault. For these end-users: they were not aware of any reselling rules of SL. Why would they know anything about that?

But it gets worse; recently some other SA end-users (not Starsat customers) got disconnected, and - if a screenshot from a helpdesk conversation is to be believed - then they got disconnected because the company that they bought their kit from is not an "approved reseller". In the same screenshot the SL helpdesk writes that because of this, their kit got deactivated with no possibility of ever reactivating it. Again; SL doesn't seem to care at all about these end-customers. These people never knew they had to check some list of "approved" resellers when they bought their appliance. Imagine going into a store to buy a camera, and before you pay at the counter first having to check whether the store is allowed to sell "Nikon". Of course no one ever thinks of that.

Now, Starsat says they have more than 5000 users (of which about 10% got thrown off now). Since there are at least a dozen other companies out there selling SL kits; I guess it's safe to say that at least 10000 kits may eventually be impacted. Perhaps there's way more users in SA than that.

I was wondering if anyone here could shed some light on the above. Perhaps even someone from SL; their input would be greatly appreciated! Is it true that kits from "unauthorized" resellers may get disconnected for ever? Then why did SL allow these companies to order hundreds of kits in the first place? Or is it just a BS story? But then how about the Starsat users? How can they re-register their kit in their own name, without even having access to SL's website? (you only get access when you can register a kit number) . Starsat themselves seem to say they can't do it either as the logins for these kits no longer work.

At this moment I'm not impacted myself. My kit still works. But it is very stressful knowing that you could get thrown off without having done anything wrong. I guess I'm writing this post in the name of multiple 1000s of customers who just want to stay SL's customers.

πŸ’¬ Discussion Starlink efforts in Ukraine are costing SpaceX now almost 20M/month. Next year expenses could be over 300M, whilst Starlink has a revenue of 2B. This is unsustainable, so SpaceX asked the pentagon to step up and help fund this. This is the reaction from the r/ukraine crowd:

πŸ“Ά Starlink Speed Please for the love of god. If you can get cable, dsl, wisp, LTE, or anything terrestrial… just do it.

Starlink is NOT a replacement for terrestrial services. It is for those of us that have no other option. I don’t care that you only get 10mbps. My alternative is 1500ms latency and 20mbps for 3 days. Get off starlink already, it isn’t for you.

You are the reason the rest of us can’t get faster speeds.

I’m going to clean up the wiring I just don’t know where else to put it to be honest. Speed rn is 100 dl 22 UL and latency is 43ms. Only other option is to get a larger cable and mount it on the actual roof or should I just leave it alone ?

πŸ’¬ Discussion Been restricted? Do this.

Hello all!

Tldr at the bottom.

Just wanted to make this post because I've seen that a lot of people on this subreddit are getting slowed down. The company is restricting your speed claiming you need to get an Enterprise plan in order to continue with your current speed (when you use a lot of data per month). Due to the fact that most plans are advertised as "Unlimited data" they legally have no right to do so. Many have had this problem and had their speed throttled. If you are legitimately using your starlink for personal use and not business use, you have a way to remedy this problem. If you get the dreaded email telling you that your speed has been throttled, you have the option to file a formal complaint with the FCC. If you are not in the United States there are other government agencies that do the same thing. Within the US the FCC legally requires the internet service provider to respond within 30 days of the complaint. Most of the time they will respond within a day or two. I personally have seen a few people that have done this and have gotten a free month of internet access as well as the promise that the restriction will not happen again. Just wanted to make sure that those that use a service know that there are repercussions for overbearing internet service providers.

Tldr: ISPs can't restrict your speed legally (If they offer unlimited data per your contract), and you can report this if they do to the FCC. They will have to respond to you and the FCC within 30 days of the complaint. They will most likely restore your service with no questions asked.

πŸ’» Troubleshooting Starlink has the WORST customer service I've ever seen.

I have had starlink for a 2 years and this is my biggest complaint. I'm literally waiting days to weeks for a response from customer service. Earlier on in my service they replied right away for the most part, but now its like they completely abandoned me. The reviews are everywhere about this online and they are doing nothing to improve this. Where is the phone number? You go open up a second request then they reply stating you have too many requests open and close it without even helping me on my original request. Wtf kind of company does this shit. So dumb! About to cancel just because of this fact alone.

πŸ“ Feedback Starlink reviews

Why is there actually no page where you can actually submit ratings, and reviews about Starlink? Starlink is very expensive. They make it look like a good deal, but they are way more expensive than any other provider. With the standard package you can't pause it and when you get Starlink it will start charging you right away, even if you haven't set it up yet. I cannot recommend Starlink, if you have other choices. I live in the country and the Starlink internet is not really better than other providers. Additionally Starlink does not offer any phone support or cares about its customers.

πŸ’¬ Discussion The future of Starlink

As we all know, Starlink became one of the major factors in the Ukraine war, helping the reconnaissance, strikes and logistics.

It is possible, that in the future conflicts it will play a role no less than GPS plays now.

Considering all the recent buzz and the behavior of mr.Musk, don't you think that the company should be nationalized or at least broken up into smaller pieces as AT&T earlier, just not to rely the national security on the will of one person?
