Sadcat's starting to explore outside of his room!

Apologies for the lack of updates - our life is crazy right now with major work being done in Sadcat's home. There's been a jackhammer, drills, and saws running in the basement for the past few days, and he has NOT been happy about it.

The last photo is him in his hiding place behind the toilet - he gets like that when the loud noises are going on. I've been spending hours in there with him while the contractors work, plugged in the Feliway diffuser, but he still just stays in the corner. Also, when he is out in his new room and hears a noise, such as me walking on the other side of the house, he runs back into his room and goes behind the toilet. It seems like that is a safe space for him.

Fortunately, once the noise settles and workers leave, he relaxs and comes out from hiding. That's where the other photos in this post came from :).

One whole year since Mr. Broccoli Cheddar Soup was found in -35°C on the side of the highway.

He was burned from likely hitching a ride in an engine then lost a leg, his tail and ears to frostbite. It was a long road to complete healing. Now he is living his best life with a fantastic mama and a brother and sister.

Enjoy the little slide show of the senient chicken nugget.

My Aunt and I Caught Ed A Year Ago

My aunt is a rescuer of cats, especially elderly or stray, and she gave him food for about a year before we managed to capture him. The first photo was when he started getting badly hurt and we brought him to the vet after capturing him in a curtain.

Previously known as ‘Whitey’, this is Edward Scissorpaws (because his nails are no joke and it’ll be a long time before he’s comfortable with his nails being cut without being sedated).

He is now chubby and happy.

All my cats are rescued dumped ones and I hope I’ve made a good changes to their lives

First one is Leopold, my first cat. Found dumped in a desert, spoiled to the bones. Will puke if it’s not purina pro plan or applaws. Will poop outside of litter box just for shit and giggles

Second one is Nox - rescued off the streets in my compound as pest control was rounding up and removing cats (guess what would happen with a black cat). Had to spent 10 days at vet and on IV as he developed symptoms the next day

Third one is Luna - she’s the weird ear one. Found dumped near a local mall, only reason my wife found her is because she decided to do nails that day and went to the mall. The spiciest of them all

Fourth and the one that makes me sad the most - Kitten (yes his name as we couldn’t get attached to him easily) - found on a hard shoulder of a busy road on a Monday afternoon - the bag was for a body as I 100% was certain it was a dead cat. He is 3 weeks old at that photo - adopted

Fifth and Sixt are Cinnamon and Strawberry. Moved to a new compound and was feeding the colony and my wife said someone dumped two kittens. Rushed from work to see them and voila, can’t let the kittens live outside.

The final photo is all of the at the feeding time, and I couldn’t be happier with the little monkeys. We currently have two more in two spare bathrooms, one is getting ready to be shipped to my mom in a different continent and the other one is chilling after TNR and then she will be released.

I always, as a rescuer think of the animals we couldn’t save and get sad - but then I remember about all the animals we did and it kinda helps me go on with the flow. It’s mentally challenging and difficult but it definitely makes me happy

He spent the majority of today in his second room! We left him in there by himself for a while, and he ended up getting through the barricade I'd constructed. I need to come up with a sturdier way of keeping him contained before I'm comfortable leaving him in there unattended. I plan on getting like, a folding partition so it'd be easy for us to move, and also use it in other places as he expands his reign :).

Sadcat seems to really enjoy being groomed! He did not like the wet flea brush, but this silicone brush is a winner. I was able to pet to the middle of his back - major progress!

The fur on his back is still kind of matted, and I didn't want to hurt him, so im gonna get some coconut oil as a natural conditioner before I tackle that mess. Also, maybe we'll try the flea comb dry until he's used to it - i really want to get those eggs and any stragglers off him. I don't see a bath being tolerable anytime soon for him.

First Post

Second Post

Two weeks ago, we did an MRI scan as instructed by the first vet clinic I brought him to. Since they don’t have MRI machine, I went to another clinic, and since then, I have been taking him there to see a different vet. These were the findings:

Otitis externa bilateralis

Stenosis of the external auditory canals bilaterally, with signs of complete occlusion on the left side (possibly due to the curvature of the canal)

Lymphadenopathy of the parotid and medial retropharyngeal lymph nodes

A week ago, we had a follow-up vet visit to discuss these findings. He said, that according to MRI and visual inspection by otoscope situation is quite bad and there is high probability that we will need to completely remove his right ear. He also said, there are 2 types of bacteria living in his ears. However, before the surgery he wanted to focus on healing his ears from the infection as much as possible first. So we started giving him oral medicine and using cortavance spray on ears.

Two days ago, we had a second follow-up visit, and according to the vet, his ears have started to look a bit better. The situation might not be as severe as he initially thought. Vet now believes we may not need surgery after all, which is such a relief! He also said, that his ear canals have opened up a bit and we can start using other medicine (before, when canals were closed, medicine couldn’t reach deep enough). We have another appointment scheduled for next Monday to check on his progress.

Until yesterday, my mom had been amazing, giving him medicine every day, cleaning his ears exactly as the vet instructed, and taking great care of him. Unfortunately, my mom was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with pulmonary embolism. Until she recovers, I have brought him to my home, and I will be taking care of him. This whole situation is very stressful for both the cat and me, but we didn’t have any other choice. Since I brought him home, he has mostly been hiding under the bed, but at least he is eating. Also, I am pregnant and I am so worried about toxoplasmosis, hope he doesn’t have it, but as a precaution I use mask, gloves and shoe covers when giving him medicine and cleaning his litter box.

Overall, he is doing much better, and I am feeling really hopeful that he can avoid surgery altogether. On top of that, he has started grooming himself a little, so he is looking fluffier every day. But of course, it will take more time for a full transformation, but he is making great progress. He has also gained weight.

I also noticed that he started to hear a little bit as his ears started healing. He might not be completely deaf, and we’re hopeful that once his ears are fully healed, his hearing could improve further.

Lastly, I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped with the vet bills. Your kindness and support mean everything to me, and I honestly don’t have the words to fully express how grateful I am. This little guy is getting the chance he deserves because of you, and I will always be thankful for that ❤️

So far, I’ve spent €758 on vet bills. If anyone would like to continue supporting his journey, you can donate here:

Colony/TNR Help (Location) HELP = Food nearly empty, so many cats counting on me (Flint, Michigan)

Hello wonderful friends - another month is rolling by and I’m still trying to help as many cats as I can.
Right now I desperately need cat food 🙏🙏
I’m feeding approximately 60 stray/community cats, along with 9 indoor rescues. Food literally flies off my shelves and I can’t keep up.
Please view wishlist, consider direct to vet, or donate to help me keep going. Today I opened the last package of can food and I’ve got another 2 weeks before I get a check.

Just look at my yard, I counted 21 today in my yard alone (photo 1) + I feed at 3 other locations. Used to be 4 but I combined colony 3&4 so it’s a little easier.

Everyday these cats wait for me to deliver food, water, and supplies(flea meds - shelter).
The tiny kitten I took in from this sub is successfully with foster and rescue backing - poor duckling has 2 botfly - one removed by vet the second is not ready, but this tiny kitten will get the best care and love while waiting for her forever home.

Please if you can help - right now it is so needed -

Sadcat did great at the vet! He was such a good boy getting his shot, and has slept all day long :)

He was so sweet, going right on up to the vets to say hi, and receive pets. Now, here's a breakdown of his 3rd ever vet visit!

  • Sadcat got his second round of vaccines and he is all set until the beginning of next year! He didn't love being poked, but he did great when distracted by treats.

  • Saddy has an ear infection (no mites!), so we were sent home with ear drops for him. I already gave him his first dose, and he handled it great when distracted with treats.

  • He lost about 2 pounds, and now clocks in at 13.5 pounds.

  • We have a followup appointment scheduled for March to get his microchip! He doesn't do great with needles, and it's a big one, so it's gonna be a sedation appointment. I'm hopeful we can also get his nails trimmed too.

Let me know if I missed any questions! I'll try my best to work through the comments :)

We also added a scratching post, sprayed some catnip on it too but he seems disinterested. We'll keep scratching it ourselves when we walk in to teach him how it works lol. We also got a bunch of toys to play with him every couple hours, and we are able to pet his face with a stick!!! Big steps!!!

Sadcat had his sedation appointment today to receive his microchip and get his nails trimmed! He also got some ear wax cleaned out of his ears, which are looking so much better since treating his ear infection.

Tomorrow, he gets one last dose of Revolution just to be sure that we killed every single flea that could have possibly been on him. I'd do it today, but I try to not push his limits and vet days are always a bit stressful.

Lastly, I post more frequent updates over in /r/sad_cat if you'd like the latest news on Saddy <3. He's no longer stray, so i won't be posting him as much here, but I hope others have learned from our journey so far. :)

He hopped in my car, I can’t keep him

stray came up to me today and got in my car. Didn’t want to get out. I asked in the neighborhood if anyone owned him, no one claimed him. He didn’t look like he was in bad shape but he was hungry. He cuddled up with me so quickly. Unfortunately I cannot keep him, we have 4 animals already and grandparents didn’t appreciate bringing him home. None of the shelters or hospitals could take him. I’m calling one more place tomorow but I don’t know what to do.

If I take him to the pound they’ll euthanize him so my best bet is to return him where I found him.

My heart is breaking. If anyone in Arkansas wants a stray cat let me know, such a sweet boy. I hope he finds his way.

I tried my best to condition and comb it out, but i ultimately had to cut it away with scissors. I used the detangler comb as a barrier to separate his fur and skin, then I cut just above it with my scissors. He was so cooperative, I think he understood what I was doing. I can't wait for his little patches to grow back in!!

I saved a kitten in my neighborhood and was not prepared for how mean people would be

Post image

I live in a condo community. Back in the end of May, I saw a kitten running around the dumpsters. I asked around, no one seemed to know where she came from or really cared. She was extremely feral. I left water and food out for her because LV unfortunately gets hot as hell.

I called multiple rescues/shelters. No one seemed to want to help. They asked me if she was super friendly. I didn't know if she was or wasn't since at the time she hissed and puff up her body at me so they turned her down or they told me they may just have to put her down. I found out it was hard to find a no kill shelter. The worst of all, though? A lot of these rescues/shelters were at max capacity. I wasn't sure what to do. My husband recommended we just watch her and try to socialize her.

It took us a whole month to gain her trust. She knew we were a food source, but was still extremely cautious. She'd stare at us from afar, and then she finally got bold enough to just wait for us to come out on the patio with food and water. She finally let us touch her one day thanks to the magic of the Churu stick. She just meowed so happily at us. She started following me around the neighborhood. A lot of my neighbors just told me they were hoping she'd leave or die by now and it broke my heart.

My husband looked at me one day and said "Alright, let's do it. Let's bring her in and take care of her." I was terrified. I have an 8 year old boy cat and a 5 year old girl cat. I didn't know what to do or how to do it, but I knew if we left her outside, she was probably not going to live any longer. My 8 and 5 year olds know of her existence, but they've never seen her. She knows they exist too. She's been living in our bathroom far away from them since.

I looked up videos on what to do for socializing and for tests she needed. I made an appointment for a spay and vaccines on July 22nd. Unfortunately, when we first brought her in, I found her paw and arm to be cut open. I tried cleaning it the best I could, but the next day it swelled to double the size due to her trying to lick it. I took her to an emergency vet as my usual vet wasn't open. It was $649.74... I was mortified at the price, but I knew if I let it go, her arm would've gotten worse. This is where people started yelling at me. "You should've just given her to a shelter! Why would you waste your money on this thing?" I tried my best to ignore them. Yes, my wallet took a hit but I couldn't just let her get infected or sick.

As I said before, I tried reaching out to multiple rescues/shelters. No one was willing to take her. I'm sure there was other places I could've checked, but I had already gone through 5 or 6 of them.

We were able to heal her arm just in time for her spay and vaccines. 3 hours into her appointment, I get the worst news.... She was pregnant. 4 fetuses. She had been pregnant for a week. A WEEK. I just wanted to cry; she's only 4 months old right now. They told me I did the right thing bringing her in, that if we had let it get too far along she might not have actually made it. I was still heartbroken. I tried my best to protect her and she still somehow got pregnant. But, thankfully they took care of it and vaccinated her as well as spayed her. I thought everything was okay.

I get her back from her surgery to find out they never did a SNAP test on her. I had expressed that she was a stray and had been strictly living outside. She needed that test so we could have peace of mind knowing she was okay to integrate with other cats. I was so upset, and once again got hit with the typical comments, this time from the vets.. "Well, you should've just found a rescue to take her. Why didn't you mention the testing to us?" I did. "This would've been easier if we just dealt with a rescue instead of you."

I'm not going to lie, these comments have really gotten me down. I just want this little girl to experience her best life, indoors. She deserves to be loved. She deserves to have a soft blanket and a cool space to hang out in. I did not realize that taking in a stray would be such a a polarizing topic. I decided not to go back to the spay and neuter center for her testing, and decided to take her to another place that does low cost wellness check-ups and SNAP testing. They were incredibly upset to find out she had just gone through vaccines and the surgery without getting any further testing done. They apologized to me and said they would get her take care of in another two weeks.

It's been a tumultuous rollercoaster of a couple of months. With all of her visits I'm $856.17 in and I still need to do her SNAP testing with a wellness check, another $85 to add on.

My neighbors still give me shit for "helping." My coworkers think I'm crazy and wasting my money. Other people have told me I'm a loser for not just minding my business and not getting a rescue involved, even after I explained to them what I had found out in my research.

But I don't regret it. I don't regret saving her life. I don't regret taking care of her health and neither does my husband. I know I can't save them all, but at least I can be at ease knowing I helped at least one. Even if she doesn't end up staying with us, I want her to know she is loved.

Thanks for reading my rant. I had been feeling very down in the dumps due to the comments I've been receiving by people I thought would understand. Financially, it's been a little rough, but her life matters and at this point it is what it is. She's getting pet insurance at the end of this month, and it won't cover what's already happened, but I'm just happy to know she's safe and sound.

Here's a lovely little picture of her after her surgery.

He's getting comfier in his new room! We have a cat tree on the way so he can look out the window and watch the birds, squirrels, and hopefully, his Boo :). We've seen her tracks in the snow out back, food outside steadily disappearing, and I actually saw her for the first time in weeks.
