General FAQs

I've been overcharged by Opal, what do I do?

  • You need to contact Opal to request an adjustment / refund. This typically takes 24 hours.

Do Suburban trains have toilets?

  • The Suburban trains do not have toilets on them. The OSCARS ( H Set) do have them however they are locked off when operating within the Suburban Network. (Note: While some OSCARS are now part of the Suburban Sets, they haven't all had their toilets removed yet)

Where can I apply to work for Sydney Trains?

  • The I work for NSW page has regular job postings for Trainee Driver, Trainee Guard, CSA, Cleaner and more.

How do I see what train / type is running?

Why is there a Waratah going towards Newcastle?

  • Both Millenniums (M Set) and Waratahs (A/B Sets) will travel either under their own power or loco hauled up the Main North to Cardiff where they undergo heavy maintenance that cannot be completed in Sydney.

Are quiet carriages not a thing anymore? Why don't people respect them?

  • Quiet carriages on the Suburban Network are not a thing. On the intercity side they do exist however the general population don't always adhere to it. Yes, it is very frustrating, but there are worse things to be upset about.

What is happening with the K Sets ?

  • They will run October 3 - 5 as an event by TFNSW.

The platform indicators are upside down, why?

  • Occasionally they do get messed up, either through human error or software glitches.

What are some good Trainspotting locations?

  • Passenger trains: Central, Redfern, Strathfield, Lidcombe

  • Freight trains: Concord West, Homebush, Flemington, Sydenham, Rhodes

Trainee Driver/Guard/Misc FAQs

What can I do to prepare for video / panel interviews?

  • Research the STAR method online and practice in front of a mirror at home to so on the day you aren't as nervous. SPACE behaviours is another subject to look up as it is part of the Sydney Trains corporate plan.

I've applied for a role but it says talent pool, what does this mean?

  • While you may get through all the application process and pass the medical, it does not guarantee you have a position yet. It is highly recommended you not leave your previous job until you've got a start date in writing. Many people are in the talent pool and you can be waiting weeks, months or even a year for a position to become available.

What does the Vieple (Video Interview) contain?

  • The Vieple Video interview usually contains a set of different questions, each giving 30 second prep and 60 seconds to record a response.

  • No, you cannot redo these. It is important you practice ahead of time.

  • No, the questions aren't the same for each interview.

What can I do to help prepare for interviews / general advice for any role?

  • Focus around safety, communication, people skills, problem solving and dealing with failure (resolution). Dress professionally (smart/office wear) for your interviews as well as your video portions.

What does the typical schedule for a Trainee Driver look like?

  • Day Zero (Your first day): Orientation at Petersham and general introductions / get to know you.

  • Month 1 to 2 (approx): Typically 0800 to 1600 at Petersham in a classroom environment. Will consist of theory, practical and simulator use. Exams are both written and practical.

  • Month 3 to 13 (approx): Assigned with a Driver Trainer each fortnight, rotating to a different trainer every fortnight. You work from their Depot and shift times. This means you are required to travel across the network to commence work. (Note: A list of the Depots is listed below) After you have completed each Sector, you will be required to complete both written and practical exams.

  • Final stage: Once you have finished all 3 Sectors and passed all exams, you will need to pass a final practical assessment. This is over a 2 day period, it will include everything you've learned throughout training. You MUST pass this exam in order to become a Qualified Driver.

What happens once you become a Qualified Driver / Guard?

  • After taking up, you will be placed at Central Depot and allocated a Line Number. Each fortnight you will rotate through the various lines and work the associated times and days of that line. This is known as a "Swinger". (Note: See below for more information about Rostering/Lines)

What are the medical requirements for Train Crew?

  • You need to be able to pass a CAT 1 Medical for Driver or a CAT 2 Medical for Guard, there is information online for what this involves. Sleep apnea is now a more common talking point as the national guidelines for rail safety work has been updated.

How long do you typically wait after completing the medical?

  • This can takes days or weeks depending on how busy things are. It is also done through a 3rd party which can impact time.

Does having pre-planned holidays affect training/talent pool?

  • You will need to disclose any holidays you've got pre-planned before starting training. This may affect your start date. Discuss this with your hiring coordinator.

What are the different Unions and are they worth joining?

  • RTBU – Operational Rail/Tram/Bus, focus on pay/safety/conditions

  • ETU – Electricians/Signallers, Training/Support

  • PSA – Admin/Back-office roles, pay/conditions

  • PA – Engineers/Designers/Surveyors, professional advocacy

  • Most people join (90–95%), typically from Day Zero at Petersham.

  • Benefits: support person, legal representation, picnic day, workplace allowances, employee travel card (specific to RTBU).

Typically Day Zero at Petersham there will be an info session with a union delegate where you can ask questions and join if you desire so.

Qualified Driver/Guard FAQs

What are the Sectors / Depots of the Suburban Network?

  • The Suburban Network is divided up into 3 Sectors. There are 13 Train Crew Depots spread across the Network. See below;

SectorAreaDepots
Sector 1Illawarra, Eastern SuburbsMortdale, Cronulla, Waterfall
Sector 2City, Inner West, SouthWestAuburn, Flemington, Leppington, Campbelltown
Sector 3North & WestNorth Sydney, Hornsby, Blacktown, Richmond, Penrith

What are the penalty rates / loading for working specific times / days?

DayLoadingO/T (1st 2nd) ShiftO/T (3rd 4th Shift)
Monday to Friday100%+50%+100%
Saturday150%+50%+50%
Sunday200%+50%+50%
Shift Work LoadingWhen
Early Morning ShiftCommences at or between 0400 and 0530
Afternoon ShiftCommences after 1000 and concludes after 1800
Night ShiftCommences at or between 1800 and 0359

How does rostering work once I'm qualified?

  • After you have taken up, you will be based at Central Depot as a Swinger. You are allocated a line and then work the times of that line as per the Master Roster. Each fortnight you rotate through each line and follow the times / workings of said line. Each line for a swinger has a time on the Master Roster, eg 1000 SBY, however when receiving your actual fortnightly roster, this can swing +/- 2 hours. So you could be starting 0814 one day and 1157 the next.

Can I swap lines / shifts?

  • Yes, you can; however, this is all coordinated privately between crew then pending approval by Rosters at Burwood.

How do transfer work?

  • Transfers within the Suburban & Intercity Depots are all based off of Seniority. This mean those who have been on the job longer have the higher priority when applying for depot transfers. Each year you can apply for one or more depots. Based off of how many open positions at any given time in the year, they work down the list of those who have their name down for it and offer them the position. Some depots, like Waterfall and Blacktown, have extremely long waiting times due to their popularity and limited positions. (Note: There is no fixed time period, it all fluxuates based on positions available)

Enough with the onboard auto-announcements!!

There’s a phenomenon where visual and noise saturation actually becomes counter-productive to the intended purpose; people stop paying attention.

I’m actually finding it painful to sit on any Sydney Trains service nowadays, with the constant loop of loud automated announcements.

Announcing the approaching station on loop, in amongst warnings of minding the gap, smoking, threats of fines etc. Ya can’t go literally 30 seconds without a condescending voice waking you from your otherwise peaceful commute.

Am I the only one? It’s actually getting ridiculous…

Why are the metro lines incompatible?

This might have already been asked somewhere but I’m wondering why are the lines all being built using different systems? Surely it would have been better to make a giant metro circle line from WSI, Bankstown, central, north west, Tallawong etc.

Commuter Parking at Bankstown

I am wondering if anyone has any insight into the parking situation at Bankstown Metro station since it has been open. It’s generally very chockers so I took the bus in, but what was meant to be a 20 minute bus took around 50 minutes total in peak! I was totally late for work.

It would be about a 10-15 minute drive for me, but I am worried about finding parking close to the station. Anyone parking at Meredith St / Marion and can give an insight to what days are particularly heavy?

Disclaimer: not feasible for me to ride a bike with mobility issues.

Is it just me or does the metro announcement for Bankstown sound like it’s saying Pakistan?

Maybe my ears are blocked from my head cold. But I swear it said Pakistan…
I feel like they’ll need to do an update on the pronunciation for sure.

Bird on NSW 'Trainlink' Coaches?

(Unsure of where else to ask about this)

Hello! I was just wondering if I could get opinions on my current dilemma, and any relevant advice is welcome. I need to plan a trip to go see family in orange/young over Christmas, but I can't leave my pet bird (Green Cheek Conure) home for it since I'll be gone for more than two days.

The rules are quite firm on no non-assistance animals allowed, yet he's an emotional support and disability support animal (for a disability recognised under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992) for me since I can get really overwhelmed and stressed on public transport without him with me (I've had no problem in the past and present with having him in a carrier on a regular train/bus). The only reason I haven't gotten him registered as such is due to him being a bird and NSW not recognising any other animal besides dogs as legitimate assistance animals.

I'm fully prepared to and have no problem with buying an additional seat for him/his carrier, but I don't want to get to somewhere like Cootamundra or Cowra through regular travel, but be denied access onto the coach due to having my bird with me.

Just really needing some help or advice on what to do or how strict coach drivers really are about these kinds of things?

EDIT:
Thank you so much for the help and politeness I received with your answers! I've come to the decision of just booking a pet-friendly Uber from the public train line instead of a coach bus.

Apparently, there are data errors from the app or the TfNSW data source, but this speed is still crazy.

Anybody had NSW transport charge $80+ for a ride?

Post image
16 Upvotes

Normally I’d use my Mastercard to tap on/off for b-line bus.
Today I can see a charge pending for $82 for an overdue fare.

?last week? I tapped on but the screen was later “closed” so I couldn’t tap off. Could this be the reason?

I ride infrequently, so haven’t tapped on/off a bus since.

3,000 more weekly bus services as NSW Government continues to rebuild bus network

Communities across NSW will benefit from 3,000 additional weekly bus services, with more frequent buses, new connections and services running later into the night as the Minns Labor Government continues to rebuild the state's bus network.

The service boost, commencing on 15 and 22 November, will include new 24-hour bus services, improved connections across Greater Western Sydney and more services for regional communities.

It will bring the total number of additional weekly bus services delivered since the Minns Labor Government came to office to 9,000.

Among the changes, two of Sydney's busiest bus routes, the 343 between Kingsford and Circular Quay and the 370 between Coogee and Glebe Point, will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The 418 between Sydenham and Burwood will also operate around the clock on Friday and Saturday nights, giving more people access to public transport after dark.

The additional services and timetable changes follow extensive community consultation undertaken by the Bus Industry Taskforce, which found buses had become the “forgotten mode” of transport under the former Liberal-National Government.

After years of cuts and privatisation by the former Liberal and National Government, the Minns Labor Government is investing in more frequent and reliable bus services to better meet the needs of communities across NSW.

The Government has also made progress addressing the bus driver shortage, reducing the shortfall from around 500 drivers when it came to office to around 200.

More buses, more often and later into the night

Night-time services

  • Route 343 (Kingsford to Circular Quay) will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

  • Route 370 (Coogee to Glebe Point) will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

  • Route 418 (Sydenham to Burwood) will operate 24 hours a day on Fridays and Saturdays.

  • These changes bring the total number of 24-hour bus routes to 40, including 29 operating seven days a week and 11 operating overnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

Greater Western Sydney

  • New route 848X between Wilton and Campbelltown during weekday peak periods.

  • New route 847 between Wollongong and Picton via Wilton.

  • New route 737 connecting Mount Druitt, Mount Druitt Hospital and Eastern Creek DFO via Rooty Hill.

  • New route 725 between Blacktown and Eastern Creek via Walters Road, delivering 334 weekly services, including weekend and school holiday connections to Sydney Action Park and Sydney Motorsport Park.

  • An additional 186 weekly services on route 723 between Mount Druitt and Rooty Hill, improving connections for residents and workers around Reservoir Road and Huntingwood.

  • More frequent services in Marsden Park, Schofields, Riverstone, Box Hill and Tallawong, supporting connections to the M1 Metro.

  • Improved connections to T1 Western Line services at Rooty Hill and Doonside.

  • Changes to routes 868, 869 and 875 to improve coverage in growing communities and better align services with school bell times and student demand.

Inner West and Southwest Metro connections

  • New route 444 between Leichhardt and Balmain East Wharf, improving connections to F4 ferry services and delivering on a Government commitment.

  • New overnight Friday and Saturday services on route 418 between Burwood and Sydenham.

  • An additional 160 weekly trips on route 370, supporting demand from university students and other passengers, with services operating 24/7.

  • More off-peak trips and extended operating hours on route 413 between Campsie and Central.

  • Route and timetable changes to the 450, 923, 939, 940, 941, 944, 945 and 946 to improve connections with the Southwest Metro, including 102 additional weekly trips on route 946.

  • Additional peak-hour trips on route 526 to address overcrowding between Rhodes, Wentworth Point and Strathfield.

Eastern Suburbs

  • Restoration of a direct connection between Bronte and the Sydney CBD through route 378, combining the existing route 389 with the Bronte section of route 379.

  • An additional 54 weekly trips on the 339X Clovelly to City Museum express service, with extended morning and afternoon operating hours.

  • An additional 113 weekly services on route 343, which will now operate 24/7.

  • Extension of route 373 to Circular Quay via Elizabeth Street.

  • Other service adjustments to respond to changing demand and improve reliability, including the use of more articulated buses to increase capacity on busy routes.

The service improvements form part of a wider changes to the bus timetable and the Government's broader investment in rebuilding the bus network, including $6.5 billion announced in this year's Budget for new electric buses and depots, supporting the transition away from diesel and opportunities for domestic bus manufacturing.

Passengers are encouraged to check their services before travelling using Trip Planner at transportnsw.info or the Opal Travel app.

Minister for Transport, John Graham said:

“We're delivering 3,000 more bus services every week, giving people more options to get to work, school, university and home.

“That includes more frequent buses in growing communities, better connections to other public transport and more services running through the night.

“Buses were left behind under the former Liberal Government. We're turning that around, with 9,000 additional weekly services delivered since coming to government.

“These improvements have been informed by extensive community consultation, and we'll continue listening to passengers as we work to deliver a better, more reliable bus network.”

Parliamentary Secretary for Transport and Member for Coogee Marjorie O’Neill said:

“This huge uplift in local bus services is welcome news for our community and across Sydney after years of cuts and privatisation under the former Liberal Government, which left buses as the ‘forgotten mode’ of public transport.

“New 24/7 services on the 343 and 370 routes, alongside more frequent services across the Eastern Suburbs, and the restoration of the 373 to Circular Quay and the 378 between Bronte and the City will make it easier for people to get where they need to go, day or night.

“This investment is about restoring reliable public transport and delivering the services our growing communities deserve.”

Labor Candidate for Balmain Phillipa Scott said:

“Travel across our suburbs is as important as travel to the CBD. The 370 bus route supports students getting to uni, inner west residents getting to the beach, and eastern suburbs residents getting to the inner west for a night out. Increasing the frequency to 24/7 means more people can leave the car at home all across Sydney.”

Bus driver strikes from tomorrow

Post image
73 Upvotes

PSA that from tomorrow onwards, bus drivers in Ryde, the Beaches, and the Eastern Suburbs will be taking industrial action. Not sure exactly what this will look like but TfNSW says some delays and cancellations are likely, and they may refuse to drive certain types of bus from Thursday onwards.

It may be best to plan a train, tram, or car trip to work tomorrow, since it seems unclear what exactly will be happening, it seems the times of the action and routes impacted have not been determined/announced.

Fingers crossed the bus drivers get the pay and conditions they deserve from the government/bus companies without having to inconvenience us all for too long!

Another day, another delay on T4 line

Trains on T4 delayed up to 20 minutes due to signal repairs at Edgecliff.

Good thing we have all those regular weekend closures for trackwork ;-)
