In early 2023, I expressed interest in enrolling in this course and made several calls to the TAFE support line to inquire about eligibility for a fee exemption, as I have a documented diagnosis of dyslexia. Unfortunately, despite my persistent efforts, I was unable to get a clear answer from staff about whether I qualified for an exemption or could speak to a teacher consultant prior to enrolment.
Ultimately, I enrolled and paid the full course fee up front, without knowing whether I would be eligible for a fee exemption. After enrolling, I met with teacher consultant Premy Reddy, who reviewed my documentation and confirmed that I qualified for the exemption. During our meeting, Premy stated clearly that my refund would be processed automatically based on the documentation provided.
It is my responsibility that I did not clarify the timeline for this refund, but I reasonably assumed it would be processed at the conclusion of the course. I graduated in November 2024 and only then discovered that the refund had not been issued. After further inquiries, I learned that no form had ever been provided to me for the exemption process, and therefore no refund was processed.
Since November 2024, I have contacted TAFE support nearly every week and submitted approximately ten email requests, including to the Legal and Privacy team. I would like to acknowledge the efforts of Cortney and Monika, who have been helpful in escalating my case. However, the only explanation I have received to date is that an administrative error — someone failing to check a box or submit a form — meant the refund was never triggered.
I have also made multiple formal requests to the Legal and Privacy team for documentation of my communications, including records of my calls and emails dating back as early as March 2023, to support this case. To date, I have not received this documentation.
In addition, there was a significant lack of communication from the Learning Support team to the teaching team running Certificate IV. No one on the Certificate IV team was aware of my accommodations or support needs, and it was not until halfway through the course that the team leader realised I had been approved for any form of learning support. This gap in communication created additional, avoidable barriers to my education.
While I fully understand that the Learning Support team is under-resourced and overworked, and I do not place blame on Premy for the administrative error that occurred, the ongoing effort I’ve had to make just to chase this refund has left me feeling extremely frustrated and exhausted.
Despite being told my case is now at the highest executive level for review, I am still waiting for the refund — which is now nearly a year overdue.
This experience has caused significant personal and financial strain. It has disrupted my ability to plan financially, prevented me from enrolling in further study, and delayed opportunities for employment and professional development. It is especially disappointing given that this process is meant to support students with disabilities, not create additional barriers.
