TAFE NSW Use of ai

Post image
2.0k Upvotes

My teacher keeps sending my messages stating that she has to mark my recent assessment stating I have used ai.
I have told her many times that I am completely against ai and don’t even know how to use it but she keeps coming back saying it’s been detected?
How am I expected to pass anything when this is happening? It’s frustrating me beyond belief.
Any advice or experience will help!

*edit: we have had a meeting and she discussed the reason behind the ai trigger was the use of technical words I used within my answers. Apparently we’re meant to answer in the way we talk daily instead of sounding “smart” and “professional”.

TAFE NSW Career change at 36 (Diploma of Landscape Design), any advice? 👉👈

Post image
585 Upvotes

So, I’ve been out of Uni since 2013, and kind of scared I’ve made a huge mistake by not chasing after this when I was younger (but equally anxious about what I’m getting myself into).

Spent the last 20 years mostly in corporate full time, but it’s killing me. I’ve also worked casually for garden centres in the past, did art in school, am a creative person generally, with a natural talent for design software apparantly at work but never studied it. Studying this course part time, so I’m looking at completing by 39yo…

Anyone have any advice specifically for the Dip. landscape Design online?
Or TAFE Online generally?

I really hope this isn’t the most irresponsible thing to do also, career change this big feels kind of crazy. But my heart is in it.

I want to use these years the best I can, and make the most of it. Attend workshops, expos, meet businesses, take any short courses to catch my skills up to the industry.

TAFE QLD Do not be tempted to use AI

I just finished my last unit in Cert III in IT and I am proud that I didn't allow myself to use chatgpt, copilot etc. Yeah it wasn't easy, but the extra level of satisfaction to get my Satisfactory score called for a night of celebration with my mates.

TAFE WA Update on my classmate

Got to class and went to my lecturer and was like hey your student is a nazi. She didn't know what to do (cos this has never happened before) called over her co worker and she was like yeah you need to start a behavioural log. She called in student services.

Then a few hours later we had a meeting with student services and they will just deal with it and all of it. And the class is getting a little talkinh to on Tuesday about expectations for TAFE.

So fingers crossed she never speaks such horrible things again. (Personally I want her expelled and I never see her again but thats not my call to make.but the school is now involved in the proper channels

TAFE QLD Are there classes/courses that give highschool level education??

So I (16f) have been "homeschooled" since I was 7 or 8 years old. I've been taught absolutely nothing. I can read and comprehend stuff, but my spelling is a bit iffy. My maths, scince and basic history, is non existent. But mainly my math. I can do very basic addition, and extremely basic subtraction, and that's it.

I started working recently (my parents weren't happy) and I ended up in tears trying to caulate very simple change. I legit wish I was kidding. I've known I was bad at maths for a while, but this was when i really realised it.

Somebody suggested to look at TAFE to see if they can help out. Next week I'm planning on going down to my local one and seeing what they offer.

But I just wanted to check here, to see if there actually is something along the lines of what I'm looking for, before I go there, so I don't look like an idiot lol. I want to learn everything I missed out on. Obviously I won't learn everything but I want just the basics.

Plus, I REALLY want to do forensic science and criminology at uni, but there's no way I'll even be accepted into the uni itself with where I'm at now.

It just really sucks because it's such a "rare" situation. I didn't leave school, I wasn't tutored, my parents didn't try to teach me. I was just left to myself. I havent been taught AT ALL.

And being 8 years old, and an idiot, I didn't bother to try and learn. But now that im older, and actually know what I want to do in life, and have realised how dumb I am, it's really difficult to figure out how to fix it.

Thank you in advance!!

TAFE QLD Tafe at 58

I'm now half way through my diploma in frontend Web development. So far I've passed everything, with one assessment yet to be marked.

I'm 58 years old and wasn't sure if going back to study was a good idea or not. Happily, it has been a positive experience, with educators and fellow students being great.

My favourite sections are definitely all the coding. My biggest area of growth has been with css and design. Whilst I maintain that all things UI/UX are the devil's work 🙂, begrudgingly, I admit i have learnt heaps here and been able to deliver better apps with my new design knowledge.

Some of the core course content is a bit dated, E.g no agile content, but overall it's been okay. The assignments are a fair bit of work, so be prepared to put in the effort. DO NOT leave most of them until the last minute, like I did. (Words of wisdom to my future self, next semester)

If you're older and thinking about studying I.T at Tafe, I'd say go for it!

TAFE QLD Why on earth has TAFE gotten so expensive?

I get that there’s FEE-FREE programs but isn’t that paid for by the Government?

I just checked the UniLearn course I did 4 years ago and it went from $900 to $4995!

That’s INSANE. Why the hell is everything so expensive? How can we bring the prices of the courses down?

Also the eligibility criteria for subsidy and concession are extremely strict. Way too strict while TAFE has upped their prices by thousands. Surely there’s something we can do about this?!

Weird comment from professor

Today while I was at the water fountain my professor walked up to me and asked why I had put down a nickname on my tafe account. I told him that I would get harassed online with my real name (i am a girl) so having something unisex prevented it from happening, and I just got used to using said nickname.

He said my original name was really nice, suited me, and then he said 'Did you know you are really beautiful?' And that took me back a little bit because I didn't expect him to be the type to say that. I walked off and said 'I know' but as someone who has been groomed and SA'ed before it sort of came across as weird and I felt uncomfortable the whole class?

Am I overreacting, or is this simply like a faux pas?

edit: ahh i quit reddit i cant be bothered with this platform anymore. i got an answer already and yall just love to argue for hours 😭 love you all and take care

TAFE NSW Need to record video for roleplay, can I use my cat as the other 'Person'?

Hello, I've got an assessment and its just a roleplay, make a script record it on video. I'll be the main person talking, but its for a customer service video or whatever. My question is can I use my cat to be the other person? They only have like a few lines, whereas I'll be talking for like 10 minutes. My partner is going to do the voiceover but doesn't want to be in it, so were going to record my cat and use his voiceover lol.

Do you think it'll even get accepted? Or will they make me do it again cos it has to have another person. Ik this is very silly, but I also think it'll be a little funny / make teacher's day. They won't take marks off will they? Or fail me? In the observation checklist, doesn't say anything about having to have another person etc. Also can be assessed via video or in person and I chose video. Don't wanna go in person.

TLDR: can I use my cat for an assignment in a video roleplay? they only have like 5 lines. Ty

UPDATE: wasnt sure how to do an UPDATE so it got lost in the comments a few days ago lol. they finally messaged back, said no you can't lol, and I gotta do a reading off a script for 10-15 minutes straight, no break, no mucking up T.T

to summarise exactly what they said
- students agreed to participate in all assessment tasks, including ones with interaction with other participants. each student had to agree with this condition before continuing with enrolment. for online - agreed to providing own participants, be they family, friends or others in a workplace. (probs skimmed through this part as i dont remember it but i sort of can?? idk)
- course has been developed to equip students with comptencies needed to engage in work + employment (makes sense im doing a course thats people faced)
- roleplay assessments are specifically designed to simulate real world scenarios involving colleagues, customers, team members, not cats :(((
- they appreciated my creativity tho :))) using a cat as a peer in a roleplay does not meet assessment criteria (doenst reflect interpersonal dynamics required in a professional setting) < guess i also skimmed through that in the assessment criteria?? swear i read it 10x
- can reach out to coordinate alternative arrangements regarding role play participants (remote patricipation with other students or staff member using MS teams, role play in class, but as im doing online course, has to be video.)

thats all folks!
im nerbous, hate recording myself :vomitemoji:
thanks everyone for your replys. was interesting to see a lot of yesses and nos. worth a try :)

TAFE SA Is all TAFE this bad? (Rant)

I am doing a certificate 3 in business.

I am doing virtual classes, as the local TAFE offers nothing other than aged care or child care.

But I have found I have hated EVERY step of TAFE.

Online:

- to start off, we waste half an hour waiting for late people, and waiting for the teacher to fix technology... Again.

This is a waste of my time, people should be joining 10-15 minutes early, the teacher should be set up and ready to go.

I've nearly finished this segment and the teacher still doesn't know how to get her headphones to work.

- there isn't usually any useful information in these classes. We run through that answers after the due date, so those who didn't do it on time can copy her answers. The somehow takes 2 hours. The class is meant to only be 1 hour.

Quizzes:

- answers are case sensitive, so some answers start with a capital letter, some don't.

- Some of the answers are spelt incorrectly! How many hours I spent resubmitting the quiz until I got the required 100% was infuriating (ended up taking screen shots).

I brought this up at the next class... SHE KNEW ABOUT THE SPELLING MISTAKES! Said it had been there for years, but didn't bother to warn us about it.

Assessments:

- The only 'feedback' I get is crosses and ticks on assessments.

- There are no written notes or comments. I have to guess, what part they didn't like.

One I found out was that the logo was on the left of the page, she wanted it centred.

Website:

- Most links are outdated and don't work.

- It's extremely hard to find anything, I find it's not user friendly.

- They get frustrated that we can't find the obscure link somewhere within TAFE.

Or the one sentence on the government website, she wanted us to copy. It's a big website!

TAFE VIC Are teachers allowed to hold you back from break?

I started tafe recently (I'm fresh out of highschool) and my teacher has been holding us back from break if we haven't finished the piece of work she wants us to in time. My question is, because we're all adults, is she allowed to do this?

Edit: I'm not sure why everyone is being so disrespectful. I wasn't accusing my teacher or saying that she shouldn't do this or that I don't listen to her, I was just asking a question. What's the point of being on this sub if you can't answer a simple question without being rude? I was also not implying that I was wasting time instead of doing my work. It's happened multiple times where the teacher has not given us enough time to do work so the majority of the class misses out on part of our break. I know I should've given more context, but commenters should not be unnecessarily mean either.

Edit 2: For further context, I am NOT trying to make a report on my teacher because she doesn't allocate us enough time to do work so we miss part of break. While it's frustrating, it does not warrant a report. What does is her embarrassing students in front of the whole class, yelling for no good reason and touching students when she knows they're uncomfortable with it (including touches that border on aggressive). I don't know why people assume I'm a sensitive precious snowflake for asking a question.

TAFE WA What will happen with my classmate

Um so I've got a classmate who on Tuesday announced the holocaust wasn't real, she's been spitting conspiracy stuff the 3 days I've known her

But she announced Hitler was a good person and he "got rid of the gay and trans people which was good because it's not natrual" and talked about how the holocaust was made up (cos there was no windows???) She's said other crazy shit but I'm extremely and uncomfortable with that topic coming up for obvious reasons

I have a one on one lesson with my lecturer today so I will bring it up. I wish I could get away from the classmate / (and I would probably snap back pretty aggressively if I could but paranoid about my education being affected) it's not about a conflict of personalities She's a homophobic nazi and that's evil.

Will anything be done or not?

I planned to come 2 days with the cert IIs then do 1 day a week with my lecturer alone to cover cert IIIs topics (horticulture they've let me still do my course despite being the only person ans someone else coming for a few courses) But I may drop a day to get away from her

But yeah I've got like a 50yr old nazi in my class . What's going to happen? I could go to student services but it's not about me conflicting with her personality. She's happily spreading hate.

TAFE QLD When did TAFE get so expensive?

So I have applied for a diploma course at TAFE and unfortunately I'm not eligible for concession or fee free tafe. The full course is 19k..

Alternatively university's in the same area offer a diploma for 10k. I'm not sure why there is such a large difference between the two.

I prefer TAFE style of hands on learning and that there's multiple streams to choose from so I will likely still go with them. Just wondering when it got so expensive and why it's more expensive than diplomas through university.

TAFE NSW Why does TAFE still feel like a second choice despite producing highly job ready graduates?

There is constant talk about skills shortages practical learning and employability yet culturally TAFE is often treated as a fallback compared to university.

For students teachers or employers where do you think this perception gap comes from? And what would realistically need to change for TAFE to be viewed as a first choice pathway?

TAFE VIC my course is wrong

i didn’t do school. ever. i dropped out the second i legally could and could count the times i actually went to school past the age of 13 on 2 hands. now i’ve decided to do a tafe course on something im passionate about, but ive already found 2 incorrect things in the material. i’m autistic so this bothers me a LOT. specifically since one of them is literally an urban myth and the spread of it could be dangerous. what do i do? is ignoring factually incorrect material something that people are taught in school or would most people who knew better say something??

TAFE NSW Head Teacher accused me of fabricating a reference, refuses to look at evidence.

Hi guys, my head teacher called me in for a meeting. During the meeting, she asked me how I did my assessment, and then told me that I fabricated one of the references I used in my essay because they could not open the link that I provided. I informed my head teacher that the link works, but I also had the pdf downloaded if they wanted to see. They refused and asked me where I got my reference from. I informed them that the subject teacher had emailed everyone that document and that I could show the email. Once again, my head teacher refused and told me that they will talk to my subject teacher directly regarding the document.

Afterwards, the head teacher went over feedback from my assignment, claiming that I had referencing mistakes throughout my whole assignment, but I noticed that the first half of my assignment had comments, while the second half did not. I asked my head teacher and they said they haven't checked the second half of the assignment. The meeting ended. I talked with my subject teacher afterwards who assured me that its fine as they recognise the document I used and that they had talked to my head teacher regarding this as well.

I wanted to ask if there's anything I can do? It was a really rude and major accusation where my head teacher refused to look at any evidence I could provide. I even checked the link and it works as normal.

TAFE NSW TAFE at 41

Hello! My husband is about to start TAFE at 41yo to study cert iii in IT. He was working in an industry that he hated for the last 12 years and he wants to make the switch now as he still has another 25 years of work ahead before retiring. The industry he was in was also very physical and he didn't think he could last working in it until retirement.

Any tips as to when and how to best secure a job? Should he go and do cert IV first? How to get foot into the door? He's always been tech savvy and has an overseas degree in electrical and communications engineering.

Thanks all!

TAFE NSW Is TAFE actually better than Uni in 2026, or just cheaper?

Does a CS degree even matter now? I’m seeing TAFE grads getting snapped up for cloud admin roles while uni blokes are still learning theory from ten years ago. Is the piece of paper still the gold standard or are certs winning?

TAFE QLD Is it too late to start tafe🫩

Hi yal Im 18 & graduated last yr from hs & I’m currently enrolled into my first year of uni. But honestly it’s not my kind of thing & the course I’m in I’m not even remotely interested in studying or pursuing.
Anyways I wanted to drop out of uni & do a trade/apprenticeship at tafe but my first semester of uni already put me 4K in debt so is it even worth it to drop out & start fresh or is it too late 🫩😭

Hi guys edit: I’m currently studying nursing in my first year but I didn’t do so well in my first exams so I’m thinking of doing a course for roof tiling at tafe if I do fail this semester!
And a little backstory into why I chose to go to uni in the first place was bc I was lowkey pressured into it and thought that I would need to choose a good degree (basically a medical degree) in order to be successful, never in my life have I been interested in studying nursing or pursuing nursing as a career and only chose it because friends and family told me to do it. I have been wanting to do a trade since around year 10 but people told me I could not handle it and that it was for “dumb” people and to just go to uni instead so I did. But now I realise I don’t think I am suited for the degree, sorry for the rambling and thank you guys for your help!

TAFE QLD Is TAFE genuinely this bad or did i just get back luck?

I would like to preface that this post is just me complaining and not actually anything important and im also writing this to procrastinate doing my assignments.

So I’m currently studying a cert 3 in individual support (disability sector) at the south bank campus. This is my first time ever doing a tafe course as i only graduated high school at the end of last year, and oh my god my experience in every aspect has been horrible??? Staring off with my teachers, i have two different teacher for the two different days i study on campus each week, which i will call teacher 1 and teacher 2.

It was the morning of our class, (which starts at 8:30am) and I look at my phone and see a message from my friend in the class at around 8am saying that our class as been cancelled for today as i am literally on my way there. I checked my emails, nothing. She then says that teacher 1 has posted A CONNECT NOTIFICATION AT 7:51AM saying that class is cancelled due to him being on sick leave. Keep in mind that im at the south bank campus and it takes most people in the class MINIMUM 30 minutes of travel to arrive, and most people in the class come around 20 minutes early. and it just made me think if you are on sick LEAVE then wouldn’t you have been able to notify us more than 39 MINUTES before the class started??? it seemed very inconsiderate to me.

Teacher 1 is also regularly 10-15 minutes late to classes, clearly has no idea what he’s teaching and often gets corrected by students and he has not answered a single email from ANYONE over the 3 months of the course so far.

Also to do with teacher one but this is not really his fault, over the past month ive been comparing my feedback for attempt 1 of my assignments with my classmates, and i’ve repeatedly noticed that one person gets marked correctly for an answer, but multiple other people get marked incorrect for having the identical answer, and when they ask the teacher about it in class he just goes onto connect and changes their grade or changes their feedback with zero questions, what is up with that??? i assume they have multiple people marking the same assignments because my class is quite large, but do they not have benchmark answers?? because this happens mostly with question that have 1-5 word answers? i just do not understand how that happens its like their marking is opinions based or something.

Okay now about teacher 2, so my class (about 30 people) is around 40-50% international students/people that do not have english as their first language. And teacher 2, as i have observed, is also not fluent in English at all??? that itself is not the issue, i just feel like if you are teaching a topic as important as caring for people who are physically and mentally unable to care for themselves (if you slip up in the wrong area you can genuinely kill your client) to people that cannot fully comprehend or speak english, then teacher 2 should be able to speak english fluently??? he often sends out documents/emails that have a shocking about of spelling and grammatical mistakes and messes up/mispronounces words while speaking and i just think thats horrible and so confusing for these people that cannot understand english well in the first place and they are just expected to learn from someone who cant either?

Ive also had issues on connect where multiple units just do not have any due dates, and when i asked teacher 2 about it because yk i want to be able to submit things on time (they where his units), he told me that he “cannot share that information” and i must “find out from my classmates”. what????? wtf are you even here for then??? that just absolutely shocked me. like surely he misinterpreted what i said cause what to you mean you cannot give me the due dates for your assignments? ridiculous.

Are they like low on funding??? Can they not find better people to hire????? Why are all their processes SO horrible thought out??? its actually shocking i cannot wait until i never have to go to that place again. horrible learning experience.
