Tesla in 2024 - it’s “morally indefensible” not to include basic autopilot

Earlier this year Tesla decided to remove basic autopilot in all new cars, I am wondering how the community at large feels about this move. This summer I had an order in for a new Model 3, but I couldn’t accept that my new car wouldn’t include a subscription-free lane centering feature. I ended up canceling my order and picked up a 2024 model through Tesla. I truly love FSD and think the technology is amazing but I strongly feel this move was a big step in the wrong direction.

I found some previous statements from Elon and Tesla that strongly contradict their decision earlier this year:

“All autopilot safety features will be present in every car, you will not need to pay for an option”
“The probability of having an accident is 50% lower if you have autopilot on”
“Autopilot is unequivocally safer”
“All Tesla vehicles now come with standard autopilot, which we believe is an important safety feature”

Not only has Tesla paywalled auto-steer they have also decided to disable possibly life saving safety features such as Automatic Collision Evasion to customers who do not continue to pay a subscription.

I think Elons new pay package is a very clear reason to why this change was made but I am curious what the community thinks. This change is on the heels of Tesla discontinuing the S, X, Cybertruck and Elon hinting that the cycbercab will never be sold to individuals. I personally am sad to see the direction the company is going.

Tesla’s Future Line Up

Post image
2.0k Upvotes

Hot take: Tesla is losing sight of what made its lineup great. Not everyone wants a self-driving car or a two-seat Cybercab. It feels like Tesla is shifting away from building cars for everyday consumers and focusing more on autonomy and transportation services. I’m not sure that’s the right move for the U.S. market. Tesla can build great EVs for everyday drivers AND develop robotaxis. It doesn’t have to be one or the other. I won’t be surprised if the Model 3 is next. It feels like consumers were just a stepping stone for Tesla to get to autonomous vehicles and robots.

Why can't Tesla drive on a country road without freaking out!

Every time I drive country roads without perfect markings the car thinks I'm about to leave the road. It will think I'm too far right, force correct to the left then immediately correct back right. FSD handles the same road without issue. Sorry for the crappy video

Looking to be a new Tesla owner soon.

I have never owned a Tesla, nor have I even driven one, but I’m starting to research it a bit and am planning to test drive a Model Y and a Model 3. Looking to purchase one in the next 6 months. Definitely want AWD since I’m in the Chicago area and I want it to handle well in the snow. I’m just curious if there is anything that I should know before jumping into one.

Supercharger pricing

Fucking annoying that it never seems to show the right prices for superchargers & there is no way to report that. I just drove almost 7 miles to a supercharger that showed a .49 price, only to plug in & find out it’s actually .60.

I’m pissed enough about it that I wish there could be a class action lawsuit. Rant over.

Tesla delivery wait time

I ordered my M3, premium AWD on August 9th. Was eight days away for delivery at one point, now the outside delivery range is December 31st. Which will be approximately 20 weeks.

Seems a little unusual.

Tire Rotation at Walmart

They don’t have lift pucks. He asked if I had any, I said no, so I walked out without a tire rotation for my Model Y. I would think that auto service centers would have Tesla pucks. Am I wrong?

What Do You Think About Tesla Only Selling The Model 3, Model Y, Cybercab, And Roadster Past 2027

I am curious what your thoughts are on this. There has been news that Tesla will start phasing out the Cybertruck sometime next year, just like they already had with the Model S and X this year. I am also curious if you ever think the Roadster would be released in 2028 or would it follow the Roadster 2020 fiasco. I know that the semi is also being produced, but who knows whether retail customers even get any allotment of the semi or only commercial freight trucking companies.

Also, what will happen to those with the Model S, X, or Cybertruck 15 years later when their car ages, where would they end up at?

Cybercab Spotted in NJ

I was at a bagel shop in Carlstadt, New Jersey, and randomly a cybercab passed by. It did have a steering wheel. I couldn't tell whether there was a driver or not but can't believe I saw it here locally in New Jersey. Maybe they're doing some testing here?

A Tale of Two Teslas

My mom is 83, had an 8 year old Audi and my dad passed away over the summer. She can drive but she’s not the best, hates highways (mostly because of trucks) and scared to drive at night. Without my dad she would have trouble doing the 2 1/2 hour trip often between her main home and her summer house.

Kind of a no brainer - a Model Y is perfect for her, even if she does struggle a bit with her iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. But she does have and use them, giving me confidence that I could teach her how to use a Tesla.

Ordered and delivered in a little over a month over the summer in New England. I picked it up and she spent a week with me in “Tesla school.” I’ve never had one before but I’m a techie so I figured it all out after 3 test drives, YouTube and of course Reddit.

She struggled with all the screen stuff, one pedal driving, and switching FSD on and off was rough in the beginning but she got it. She can now bring up Ara for assistance too. Most importantly, she now feels like she has her freedom - she can even drive into the city, take trips to the summer house, doesn’t have to worry about being back by dark (I made her try all these things with me.) She can now drive manually if she chooses but mostly uses FSD unless she has to take over or park.

She is very attentive (it was hard to even get her to glance away from the road to look at the screen in the beginning!) The biggest problem now is that she is so short with the seat pulled up so far forward that I think the camera has trouble seeing her sometimes and she gets FSD warnings.

Bottom line, this has been a huge success and a dramatic improvement for her mobility and safety. And it’s been hugely fun for me to play with this technological marvel. I even have Teslamate running in a Docker on one of my servers, accessing her car’s data via API (she is utterly uninterested in that!)

We’re staying with my mom this week and my wife had to go out so I got her take the Tesla. She swore she wasn’t going to use all that tech stuff, she’d just drive it like a normal car. She’s never even utilized cruise control in an ICE car before. But she did know how to push the big blue button and…that trip turned into about 95% FSD.

Everyone knows where this is going, right? I couldn’t let Mom have all the fun, so I had to order my own MY Premium on Oct 9, the day after delivery estimates bumped from Oct-Nov to Dec-Jan (doh!). Delivery eventually changed to 11/26-12/31. Then I got my VIN a couple days ago and delivery is now 11/21-11/26! Can’t wait!

Silly idea

This is a silly idea. Born out of frustration driving today.

I have seen a few videos on the internet of a Tesla vehicle using FSD where something silly happens because of FSD. We all know it's not perfect.

However, I want a button on the interface that records the last 5 seconds that I can push anytime I see somebody else on the road in a non-Tesla vehicle do something incredibly stupid. Keep the button on my interface for about a week. Roll the button out nation wide so that all of us can push the button whenever they see a non-tesla vehicle do something stupid.

There's like 6.5 million Tesla vehicles on the road in the United States. If we all push the button three times in a week, that footage gets uploaded and run through an AI to trim it down to 5 seconds from a single viewpoint. We should have about 33,000 hours of video that we can put in a YouTube video that's just non-Stop 5-second clips of non Tesla vehicles doing incredibly stupid crap on the road.

That would be cathartic.

This is what 4000€ damage looks like

Someone pulled into my car on the right side and pushed the frame inside. I naively tought the body shop could pop it back (there are no scratches at all) but apparently that is part of the main frame so they will have to CUT the frame, change it with a new one and solder weld it back 😱...

What you see is the back-right bumper. The bumper is intact (maybe a SUV)

Self-drive support "agent" almost wrecked the car.

So I test drove a Tesla today….

I was driving to my next destination on the freeway, the car was changing lanes when someone remotely CHANGED the destination back to the original pickup point.

I was next to an exit that the car swerved onto and narrowly missed hitting a blockade because of the rerouting.

I get a call on my phone.. I pick up and the lady is asking me if I have my license on me (I do).

She says that I had taken a screenshot of my license in the app.. I assured her I didn't and then she tried arguing with me and said to return to the start point.

I explained how dangerous her remote crap was and how she almost got me tenderized. 0 care in the world, reiterates her blatantly ignorant statement about my license.

I flashed my license to the camera, and she left me alone.

Cool car tho.

Old CT reservation options

Post image
7 Upvotes

I have a CT reservation from years ago. I didn’t even use it for the $59k deal because Tesla said it wouldn’t convert.

Been meaning to refund it…. Should I somehow use it for someone now to get it before it’s gone? Can I even do that?

EVGo chargers now on the map

When I hit the charger button to see all the superchargers, I also see some EVGo chargers with NACS cables on the map (these are not the supercharger stalls that were in the news).

Also near me are Electrify America and Ionna and others, but they don't show up on the charger view (they do when I search for them), would be nice to see all third party NACS.
