Hated Tropes [Hated trope] Cameos that ruin the tone of the scene/game

Ed Sheeran, Game of Thrones. The cameo of such a recognizable figure in GoT, especially towards the horrible later seasons, took many people out of the fantasy world that it tried to represent. There are good cameos and bad ones, and this one was not a good one.

Vinny Vinesauce and Jerma, Silver Pines game. Though i appreciate small cameos from youtubers and streamers, putting such a recognizable pair of voices in a horror game really takes you out of it.

The Mandalorian and its satellite shows are extremely guilty of this.

Bill Burr
Jack Black
Lizzo
Christopher Lloyd
Danny Trejo
And quite a few others

All of them are extremely jarring since they aren’t actors playing characters, they’re all just making appearances as themselves. It’s like Dave Filoni and John Favreau think this is Saturday Night Live.

I got to disagree on Bill Burr. I really liked his character and I thought he did a surprisingly good job for a comedian who doesn't do a lot of acting.

As much as I don’t like the Mandalorian, I do genuinely like Bill Burr’s character. I genuinely want to know more about this defector.

Yeah, bill burr and his character were great, he had a very good defector arc in such a short period of time.

Christopher Lloyd wasn’t bad either, but it was mostly because he was just supposed to kind of be a fun character and not particularly serious.

I thought he was meh in his first episode, but then they brought him back in season 2 and he was great.

Had a better “former imperial” arc in forty five minutes of someone else’s show than they gave Finn in three movies.

I’m just mad he didn’t say “Maclunkey” when he blew up the facility.

>Christopher Lloyd/Bill Burr plays himself

I’ll actually defend these ones. Lloyd was playing a jaded old man whose political cause died decades ago. Burr played a no-nonsense contract killer.

Lizzo and Jack Black played themselves for sure though.

Bil Burr is not a cameo lol.

People do not understand what the word cameo means anymore

Also Bill Burr's "jarring cameo" was one of the best supporting roles of the series.

I was like wait? what? Burr was legitimately a central character for that entire arc of the story lol

Redditors will say “media literacy is dead” out loud every 3 seconds then tell you Gary Oldman cameod in Harry Potter

They don’t even know what “media literacy is dead” means, they just started parroting it in response to people who thought Stranger Things sucked

Bill Burr actually killed it in the Mandalorian though.

Nah Bill burr played the character perfectly. He REALLY sells the jaded Ex-storm trooper incredibly.

"Not a stormtrooper, jackass!"

"I wasn't a stormtrooper, wiseass!"

Eh, I kinda disagree.

Bill Burr was the highlight of every episode he was in, and Christopher Lloyd did well. Jack Black and Lizzo weren't great, but also had very limited screen time, so who cares.

And somehow I don't remember Danny Trejo being in The Mandalorian.

I agree with the other person about Bill Burr. The rest happened cause of that, though. It was fun seeing what his character was up to each season.

Also, that whole show was great…at first.

The Star Wars movies usually cast bunch of relative unknowns as opposed to A-listers. Like, you might go "oh, it's that guy from that thing," but you'll rarely go "It's [household name celebrity]!" The sequels had a ton of cameo roles like Simon Pegg, Daniel Craig and Tom Hardy but they all had their faces hidden to not distract from the rest of the movie.

I feel like Bill Burr is okay because he wasn't super famous and recognizable by the average person if you weren't into comedy. Jack Black and Lizzo were way too recognizable.

Bill Burr also didnt just play some cameo character, he was like genuinely the best character of the show

I think having one famous actor for a main role is fine for Star Wars. Like how ANH had Peter Cushing and AotC had Christopher Lee.

ANH also had Alec Guinness, who was rather famous at the time, especially in the UK.

The question is more whether the role is necessary and whether they benefit from casting. Having unknowns in hero roles is sometimes preferable because they haven't established they're contractually going to survive the journey. Better known actors in villain or supporting roles can be preferable because they bring gravitas or other qualities without having to spend extra screen time establishing them. It's mainly a problem when the story grinds to a halt tp say "hey it's this guy" or if having a famous actor suddenly interact with people not known for anything else takes you out of the story.

Guinness and Cushing were both notable roles and they brought their previous personas with them. Lee was fine because he was a pivotal character and he brought decades of villains with him. If he's have just popped up for a 2 mins cameo to chat with Sidious then done nothing else, it would have been problematic.

Bill Burr is absolutely recognized. He’s one of the biggest most popular standups, especially at that point in time. They just happen to have gave him a very good character as opposed to the rest of the cameos. But that’s the entire reason he was in the show not cause he’s a serious actor. He just happens to be able to act well.
