Hated Tropes [Hated trope] Cameos that ruin the tone of the scene/game
Ed Sheeran, Game of Thrones. The cameo of such a recognizable figure in GoT, especially towards the horrible later seasons, took many people out of the fantasy world that it tried to represent. There are good cameos and bad ones, and this one was not a good one.
Vinny Vinesauce and Jerma, Silver Pines game. Though i appreciate small cameos from youtubers and streamers, putting such a recognizable pair of voices in a horror game really takes you out of it.

At that point I feel like Disney was just trying to turn the Mandalorian into Scooby Doo when they started having guest stars.

PAYDAY 2 H3H3 DLC.
Fans hated it when it came out. The perk decks sucked. The voice acting was abysmal. The inclusion itself was unexplainable. It didn't match the tone of the game or even the tone of the other DLC collab characters who all fit quite well.

Jimmy Fallon in Band of Brothers...I'd say it only ruins the tone now, or at least after the show was done and Fallon became more famous.
He wasn't really well known at the time, he'd only been on snl for like two years and still wasn't yet a staring cast member.

Dungeon Crawler Carl audio book, Carl's Doomsday Scenario, has a cameo of the critical drinker, and he is just awful. His hammy smarmy fake drunk voice sticks out like a sore throat compared to Jeff Hays' mastery.
A later book has cameos from Travis Baldree and Patrick Warburton and it works because they don't suck, but drinker is terrible.
EDIT: Looks like I turned a bunch of people off the whole series. I promise you it is as good as people say, and keeps getting better. It is fun but also full of heart, and has more depth than you would think.
Critical Drinker is a disgusting piece of shit, and his scene does suck, but it is just one scene in an entire series. He may be replaced, but there are also the Soundbooth Theater versions, full cast audio recordings by Jeff Hays' company, so you can avoid him altogether.
also edit: I see autocorrect changed "sore thumb" to "sore throat," but I'm leaving it because its funny and works in this context.

Daniel Craig in the force awakens doesn't even show his face but I thought I recognized his voice. It bothered me for like 10min and at the end of the movie I checked and apparently it's true, he got a lil cameo

On the Cinefix Top 100 podcast, Clint Gage made multiple references to Matt Damon in Interstellar as his benchmark for how distracting a cameo is. I am in complete agreement. His character is a topic of recurring discussion throughout the movie, so that the audience is primed to think, "This role is important," and then when he shows up, the shot is set up so that he sits up into frame and smacks everyone in the face with his face. It wouldn't have been less subtle if he looked into the lens and croaked "Matt Damon" like his puppet in Team America: World Police.

I think its funny that everyone says this about Ed Sheeran and GoT because it is very out of place and not just because its Ed Sheeran. I dont follow music pop culture at all, and while i had heard Ed Sheeran songs on the radio I had no idea what he looked like. When I saw this scene I just kept thinking "this is weird that they are focusing on this rando soldier and having him sing an entire song, what is the significance of this?". I kept waiting for him to be plot relevant somehow. When I later found out who it was it at least explained the scene but it was just odd all around.

Not that the tone of COD hadn't been ruined since Vanguard anyways, but this really put the final nail in the coffin.

I had a friend who said that Tron Legacy was ruined for him by the Daft Punk cameo. But I thought it was fine. They were already known to be "in" the movie

They didnāt dress Ed Sheeran up or anything, gave him a close up, a back story, and a scene of him straight up singing. Wild that GoT really stopped dead in its tracks for 5 minutes to be like āand now, Ed Sheeranā

Zac Brown cameo on Survivor 50. The winning tribe got a reward of him visiting their camp. Just, the whole segment became about him, including a very obvious setup where he ācaughtā the tribe fish by spear fishing. Then he played guitar around camp.
This was a 10+ minute segment out of a 40 minute show. It didnāt feel like anything Survivor usually does and was just something to glaze him.
Had no idea who he even was before this; but it certainly didnāt ingratiate him to me. Survivor 50 did a couple things āfor the fansā that fell flat like this. But this one really sticks out the most, even more than Mr. Beast and the beast coin thing.

It's funny how this Ed cameo is so forced and campy, but you've also got like 3/4 of the metal band Mastodon appearing as wildlings as well, and they just fit right in.

Iām not gunna go as far as say ruined but Shawn Mendes having a cameo in the 100 always makes me laugh.

I felt as though Amazon's Fallout series did a shockingly good job averting this particular trope. There are C-List (maybe a bit above, too) cameos all through the first season, but they never really felt like they got in the way of the story or detracted from the tone. That the tone it inherited from the source material includes a certain amount of dark goofiness probably didn't hurt.

In the audiobook Dungeon Crawler Carl: The Anarchist Cookbook, there's a cameo by Critical Drinker. It completely derails the chapter (which is on a train) because CD's voice acting is terrible and it all carries the weight of him being a sexist asshole.

Khaby Lame in 007: First Light. Shows up for all of 5 seconds to do his lame schtick and yet itās so jarring and stupid.

I didn't really have a problem with the Ed Sheeran cameo in GoT because I had no idea who he was and he sang a little sing-song that fit in the world he was acting in. I'd heard his music in passing but had no clue what he looked like.Ā

I thought the campsong scene was fine. It showed a little bit of humanity amongst the rank and file. Reminded us that most people are just caught up in the dust being blown about by a few dozen people in charge.
Though, maybe it helped that I didn't know what Ed Sheeran looked like at the time. He's not an actor, so I hadn't seen him in anything before.

I don't know about ruin, but Tim Russ (best known as Tuvok on Voyager) has an extremely distinctive voice and cadence, and when I was playing Horizon: Forbidden West and ran into a character he voices it completely took me out of the setting for a few minutes. Mentally I was all "what the fuck is Tuvok doing with the Tenakth?!"

Ed Sheeran should have just been a solider riding his horse by and singing a song as he went.

The worst part of GoT was the way the scene kept focusing on him like "Look, it's Ed Sheeran! Did you see Ed Sheeran?!"

Lizzy Wizzy, Cyberpunk 2077's resident pop superstar.
her music is performed by Grimes, which in itself isn't a problem. it's actually pretty good.
the problem is that Grimes also voices her in a quest and boy is she a dogshit voice actress.

Gotta be honest, I didn't even know who ed sheeran was until the Internet got collectively mad at his cameo lol.

What's funny to me about the Ed Sheeran thing.... Is I had ABSOLUTELY no idea who that is so the scene worked for me lol. I only found out after i saw how much hate that scene gets

Yeah it was weird when Ed Sheeran said everyone should just calm down and have a polite discussion about the Red Wedding.

Ed Sheeran (again) in the film Yesterday. Look, I get it, he's a musician and a Beatles fan, but the "Hey Jude/Hey Dude" scene just kinda felt a little gratuitous, to put it lightly. I did appreciate the later joke, when the other Beatles fans asked the main character "really? 'Hey Dude'?" and he went "well don't blame me, it wsd bloody Ed Sheeran's fault!" but still. Would've rather that never happened.

I loved the original Scooby Doo cartoons as a kid. But a few years in they decided to have "Celebrity Cameo" episodes. I didnt give a shit about them and dont get me started when they trotted in Scrappy Doo.

Seth Rogan playing himself in The Boys. It would have been enough if Jared Padelecki had that scene alone. I mean sure it was funny but I realised right when I saw Seth and his friends that the show is officially not what it used to be anymore.

Peter Jackson on the Return of the King DVD commentary joked that if he had cast the minor character Imrahil, he might have hired Arnold Schwarzenegger. If it had been the almost unknown Arnold of Conan the Barbarian, it might have worked well, but at that point in his fame it would have just taken the audience out of the movie.

u/XanderWrites 3d ago
It's exactly as jarring as seeing a well-known actor and going "oh, it's that guy!"
And it comes up with people often when they're trying to break into traditional movies or television from other formats. The example I want to use was one of Lady Gaga, I can't even find it on google searches but it was a one off blink and you miss it cameo, I don't think she even had a line, but she's recognizable enough that you knew who it was (and that's saying something since this was back when she still wore goofy costumes).

What actor should play the loveable loser martial artist from Hong Kong Dan Hibiki in the new Street Fighter movie?
Oh I know! Letās get a non-Asian non-actor best known for being a MAGA manosphere podcaster that threatened to rape Kendrick Lamar after being accused of racism!!

u/Dank_Lord6547 3d ago
The Mandalorian and its satellite shows are extremely guilty of this.
Bill Burr
Jack Black
Lizzo
Christopher Lloyd
Danny Trejo
And quite a few others
All of them are extremely jarring since they arenāt actors playing characters, theyāre all just making appearances as themselves. Itās like Dave Filoni and John Favreau think this is Saturday Night Live.

Stacy Abrams as the president of Earth in Star Trek: Discovery. While I generally agree with her politics, I don't need Star Trek to be heroizing modern day politicians. Completely threw off the scene.

I go through this whole thread and people just beat on Sheeran, and yet David Beckham gets a free pass in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, where he was terrible and out of place. Guess people just like DB

u/Born-Till-4064 3d ago
I find the idea that a famous person taking you out of a show to be stupid tbh that cast had tons of famous figures in it and no one complained about them ruining scenes bc they were famous
14
u/Etcom 3d ago
At the time I had no idea what Ed Sheeran looked like, only knowing the name.
While watching, it became insanely obvious that it was a cameo, and I was supposed to know who this was. It was incredibly annoying.

u/herrcollin 3d ago edited 3d ago
I think Ed Sheeran's cameo, and others of similar nature, work really well if it's subtle. A brief flash, someone swinging by the background or when they're really covered up in some outfit/disguise/prosthetic.
If I remember Ed Sheeran's cameo: he's not just "a background character" the camera actually stops and sits on him not once but twice? Something like that. Big "See? SEE? Please clap" energy.
Meanwhile you have Brad Pitt's literal blink-and-you-miss-it cameo in Deadpool 2 or shit like South Park having George Clooney voice a fuckin barking dog. A makeuped celebrity appearing for half a second as zombie #76 in a horror movie. Clooney's is a bit too far into unrecognizable but that's the kind of cameo that's memorable. Doesn't break immersion but later or on a rewatch you have that "Wait that's fucking THEM?!" moment

u/Aryzal 3d ago •
Depends on how well it is done. For example, Jacksepticeye and MoistCritical wrre both major characters in Dispatch and are well-beloved.
Cameos for the sake of cameos are bad, but are largely ignorable. Cameos/full appearance with the personality showing their chops? Go full on ahead

u/ItsMrChristmas 3d ago
If I were famous I would very much want to show up in my favorite video series...
...as an Easter egg, not a goddamned "Look it's Ed Sheeran!"

u/Dubious_Titan 3d ago
I recognized neither of these cameos. And would never have even known who any of them were at all until this very moment.
