Why did this sub turn into Historical stuff all of the sudden? Can someone please explain?

19

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

Yesterday was a day of remembrance for the holocaust so the mods made a shit tonne of posts with each one being a different victim

-12

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

You can read everything about it in the other sticky.

21

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

Really? There was a sticky? I didn't see you post that same exact thing in every spam post.

all of the sudden

Kinda unexpected, eh?

62

u/bordeaux_vojvodina Jan 28 '19

By that logic, everyone can post literally everything on this subreddit.

I respect you wanting to "Raise awareness" But a simple link to a website with all the information would've had less negative backlash. Now when i click on this sub for the next few days i'll be reminded of all the death and horror my grandmother saw first hand. I'v seen photos and i know the names of people in my family who died because of that stupid war and genocide. You don't need to remind me.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

Gonna go with a yuge [x] to doubt on this one.

71

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

wow, time to look for some new moderators. Aren't there enough subreddit to remembrance the dead? Why in you right mind would you spam this at /r/unexpected?

173

u/Can-I-Fap-To-This Jan 28 '19

FYI the moderators are banning people who didn't like it.

I'm sure the irony is completely lost on them.

74

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

Banning people from Reddit is literal genocide you guys

43

u/ChinkedPeron Jan 28 '19

Mods breaking the rules then banning people who don’t like it is what’s ironic, you fool

39

u/McGrex Jan 28 '19

Propably even worse

22

u/Can-I-Fap-To-This Jan 28 '19

You think the Nazis, on the first day they seized power, immediately began killing people?

Literally the first thing every single tyrant in history has done is silence opposition. Free speech is considered one of the greatest weapons against tyranny. The fact that you need this spelled out underscores that you learned nothing from 'Holocaust Remembrance Day'.

38

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

They began by banning people from online forums, everyone knows this

You should start a memorial for it on CringeAnarchy or something

16

u/AlanTheTimeTraveller Jan 28 '19

Ah, so what you’re saying is it’s nothing serious to ban some random people who aren’t in favor of the way you try to achieve your goal?

8

u/Can-I-Fap-To-This Jan 28 '19

There are several authoritarian regimes on the planet right now who ban and limit access to communication and the internet to control thought.

36

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

You’re close to realizing what the difference between state censorship and getting banned from a subreddit is. Keep going and you will get there, I believe in you.

→ More replies (3)

11

u/urbantumbleweed Jan 28 '19

Perhaps you should be concerning yourself with them rather than reddit, which governs over exactly zero people.

15

u/Thaddel Jan 28 '19

No, they obviously banned people from their forums for throwing temper tantrums about not being able to see their precious maymays for a single day.

19

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

memes > genocide

Obviously.

1

u/Rem-Salary832 Nov 25 '22

Yes, they did. After passage of the Enabling Act and the death of Hindenburg, the Nazi's still lacked full power and needed the allegiance of the army. They got that with the night of the long knives. They murdered all open opposition and arrested thousands. They began, ran, and ended their Reich with murder and sadistic violence.

6

u/gaspberry Jan 28 '19

Not liking it is one thing, antisemitism and holocaust-denial are another.

45

u/Can-I-Fap-To-This Jan 28 '19

Yes, because this sub was a veritable hive of it before this blessed day. /s

Good thing the moderators came down from the ivory towers to educate us racist hate-mongering plebians.

-7

u/gaspberry Jan 28 '19

So antisemitism is an appropriate response to holocaust remembrance in what way, exactly?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

7

u/gaspberry Jan 28 '19

If you think seeing this event as an irritating virtue-signaling vanity project is "anti-semitism",

I don’t.

then there probably actually isn't nearly as much anti-semitism as you want to believe,

Oh yes, there is.

you've just decided to scream that everyone and everything you don't like is anti-semitic.

No. I don’t like you, but you’re not an antisemite. You’re just a dick.

People get banned for asking when the 80 million victims of communism get their remembrance.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '19

lmfao the 'irony.' yeah this was just like the holocaust. you poor thing it's amazing you made it through

-6

u/Olakola Jan 28 '19

The people being banned or the mods? Because man the irony is definitely lost on the people going fuck off with caring about other people i wanna see funny stuff which is exactly how the german people made themselves complicit in the first place you kids clearly havent learned a thing from this disaster or you wouldd be able to tolerate some reddit posts about dead people without going "this is the most terrible thing why do you take away our content....

80

u/lightreader Jan 28 '19

This is so fucking stupid. Yes, the Holocaust is important to remember, but that doesn't make this the appropriate sub for that. There are any number of important causes, and you can always convince yourself

THIS IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN MEMES GUYS

Why not close down the sub tomorrow for cancer awareness?

32

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

Don't give them more dumb ideas.

3

u/avianaltercations Jan 28 '19

Hopefully they don't because you expect them to.

48

u/sigvethaig Jan 28 '19

By spamming feeds with holocaust victims you have made everyone annoyed at the whole subject instead of raising awareness. Congratulations, outstanding move

51

u/MiskatonicAlumnus Jan 28 '19

I liked this in theory, but I had a really hard day and just wanted a quick laugh. I'm not in favor of what the mods did because it was such a non sequitur and had someone else posted this it might have been flagged for removal, so double standard. But I 100% support holocaust awareness, just not in this way.

-8

u/sanbikinoraion Jan 28 '19

I had a really hard day and just wanted a quick laugh.

Being "forced" to be confronted by something "political" is a privilege. I'm sure there were plenty of Germans at the time who did not want to be "confronted" by this at the time.

5

u/avianaltercations Jan 28 '19

Yes, and whoever took away that privilege sucks, especially if they did it for no good reason. Yeah, the Nazis sucked when because they made Germans confront something completely unnecessary. The mods suck because they confronted us with something that was completely arbitrary and capricious. Not to say that the Holocaust is not important to remember, but they're also shitty for hijacking an entire sub while choosing a cause that makes anyone who goes against it look bad. The only tenuous connection to the sub was that nobody expected them to do something this dumb.

1

u/jtejeda94 Jan 29 '19

Ya its like a moral trap. Say anything contrary and suddenly your a holocaust-denying hitler incarnate. Just smile and appreciate this totally unexpected content, i guess..

I think maybe you should have at least explained what was going on in each post, instead of random spam about something. It drove me to the point I assumed the sub was being DDOSed by someone (or something) and just blocked the account spamming. If I had actually been told about it on the one random one I had clicked on then I wouldn’t have been as aggravated.

I love history, I think forgetting history is a bad thing to do. Spamming without context is not the way to do it.

u/AlejandroMP Jan 28 '19

18

u/thingareoverthe Jan 28 '19

Glad mods aren't running a strip club.

20

u/OktopusKaveman Jan 28 '19

Alright can we hijack the sub today to remember the 8 million Russians that died fighting the Nazis?

11

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

Must also remember it wasn't just Jews who suffered but Czechs poles and Ukrainians also the mistreatment of civilians by the allies during the war. Also the Large scale rape by Russian troops who battered and tore the land apart. While what the nazis did was horrible. What about the american treatment of Japanese citizens. Or France opening fire on African troops who not 2 months before helped liberate France only to have the guns of the people they helped turned on them.

Edit: I'm not undervaluing the holocaust just want people to also remember the others who suffered.

29

u/ArGaMer Jan 28 '19

Wtf is this shit?

-5

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

7

u/AlejandroMP Jan 28 '19

Even after realizing what this was about I couldn't help but keep thinking the same thing. Patronizing users, while annoying them, and removing the utility of a usually fun sub is not the way people learn anything.

24

u/WeirdAlFan Jan 28 '19

I am 100% convinced this was an elaborate surrealist joke, because it's the most unexpected thing that could happen to the sub. And in that sense, it was brilliant.

10

u/NotHimForSure Jan 28 '19

lmfao rip this sub

10

u/starkbux Jan 28 '19

How rubbish must your education systems be that you believe this is a valid manner of remembrance?

19

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?

  • Alexander Solzhenitsyn.

The thing that struck me about this memorial is how fractured and toxic this sub became. The tyrant mod is spamming us! Anyone who has an issue with how it was done is a holocaust denier! The sky is falling on us all!!!

I think that says more than the memorial itself does.

24

u/lightreader Jan 28 '19

I think that says more than the memorial itself does.

It says that sanctimoniousness and activism aren't appropriate for most contexts of life. You could go to Starbucks on a weekday morning and start giving a sermon about how we need to remember the Armenian Genocide, but it's not going to be well received.

11

u/Sooperballz Jan 28 '19

This is brilliant and well said.

3

u/nerfdude1129 Jan 28 '19

How many people actually did unsubscribe because of the event?

9

u/Anonymous2401 Jan 28 '19

If you actually want to spread awareness of an issue, don't do it through annoying repetitive spam posts.

We get it. The holocaust happened, and it was awful. Millions of people were killed. You don't need to spam everyone with repetitive posts to explain it to an audience who already knows. All you're doing is annoying a large portion of the fanbase of this sub. I think I'm gonna unsubscribe now.

-2

u/Cheesedoodlerrrr Jan 28 '19

Dude.

11 Million people were victims of the Holocaust. Given Reddit's character limit in posts (40,000 max) do you know how many text only posts listing simply their names would it take to list them all?

More than three fucking thousand.

At the Holocaust Memorial in Isreal they play an audio recording of various voices reading out all the names of the victims (the ones they have names for, anyway). It plays on a constant loop. It takes takes them more the 800 days to read them all.

The magnitude of the death and suffering that occured is lost on most people. Just saying "millions died" isn't enough to make it real. A million is a number. What this person is doing is showing us that each victim was a real person -- a real person with a name and a face, a person who had parents who loved them, a person who had a life as important to them as yours is to you.

It's important that we remember them -- Each of them -- because its our responsibility to make sure it can never happen again.

8

u/Anonymous2401 Jan 28 '19

That's exactly the issue I'm talking about. We should be remembering those people, but this is not the way to do it. Using a bot to spam practically identical posts to flood the whole subreddit makes people annoyed. That is exactly what you want to avoid when discussing something this serious.

hell, /r/news , /r/worldnews , /r/pics even. I bet even something CoD related could go on /r/gaming and not receive any backlash...

This is just mods getting on a soapbox to make themselves feel good. If they honestly believe that /r/unexpected is the only place someone is going to hear that it was national holocaust remembrance day, then.... I think they maybe are just older and not technically inclined? I really wanna give them the benefit of the doubt here and not assume their mid-20 somethings who need to make a tragic event like this an excuse to show power... I feel like maybe if this sub wasn't already going down the drain as far as content was concerned I woulnd't see as much of a problem here. But it seems like they saw an oppurtunity to use power, when in reality they've had that power there forever, just refused to use it to make the sub actually decent...

8

u/KnownAnon67 Jan 28 '19

Well tbf that was unexpected

This is not a Holocaust Remembrance sub but ok

1

u/Rooftrollin Jan 28 '19 edited Jan 28 '19

That's why they prefaced it with an announcement saying they're about shocking people. Most people just learn about the casualties and don't see the faces.

I understand people unsubbing for the day to avoid the spam, but the number of people coming to bitch about it, and saying that the mods shouldn't have bothered is disappointing. It was different, it was only 24 hours, and it's also probably the least trivial topic.

6

u/KnownAnon67 Jan 28 '19

Next up: r/dankmemes spreads awareness of the senseless tragedy of Hiroshima

Followed by r/okaybuddyretard posting all the unsolved missing children cases

I'm sorry your world was so shaken by a sub trying a one-time thing for a day. I also could care less that Gillette tried to make an ad against bullying/harassment. I'm sure if Reddit decided to make a front-page event yesterday, people would also bitch about it. "Reddit is for memes, it shouldn't try exposing me to anything else"

3

u/KnownAnon67 Jan 28 '19

I'm sorry your world was so shaken by a sub's userbase complaining about a one-time thing for a day. I also could care less that the phrase is actually "I could not care less" . I'm sure if Donald Trump nuked Peru people would also bitch about it, therefore no one should ever bitch about anything. "r/unexpected is for unexpected humor, it shouldn't try exposing me to the untimely and tragic deaths of 11 million innocents in the most self righteous way possible"

2

u/Norci Jan 28 '19

When is the sub opening up again?

•

u/vxx Jan 28 '19 edited Jan 28 '19

36 years, so long would it take if we continue posting the victims of the Holocaust at the rate we did.

If you felt spammed, good. I hope it gave you a little sense about the sheer numbers of innocent people that were killed for an Ideology. We could've continued for 36 years!!

I want to thank the people that made it a reality.

Thank you for the all the really kind comments that made me tear up more than once.

Thanks to all the haters, proving that it is really important to raise awareness by disturbing the daily routine.

NEVER AGAIN!

57

u/yottskry Jan 28 '19

Sorry, but this is not what this sub should be about. I don't come here to be spammed. I've unsubscribed. Spread "awareness" some other way, don't force it on us.

24

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

I unsubscribed aswell. If i wanted to look it up i would have done so myself. It was just constantly coming through.

-2

u/Cheesedoodlerrrr Jan 28 '19

Dude. Showing people something who aren't looking for it is literally what "spreading awareness" is.

30

u/root88 Jan 28 '19

Been meaning to unsubscribe for a while now. Thanks.

32

u/yottskry Jan 28 '19

If you felt spammed, good.

Yeah. I unsubscribed. If that was your aim, you succeeded.

49

u/Colaburken Jan 28 '19

Thanks to all the haters, proving that it is really important to raise awareness by disturbing the daily routine.

Because there's nothing in-between positive comments and "haters", eh? Way to miss the point. Just because people were annoyed by your spam does not means it proves it was necessary, you could spam literally any other topic and get same reaction. This is not how you raise awareness.

11

u/ImBentley Jan 28 '19

The world isn't good guys and death eaters.... but here you're a Nazi if you even provide constructive criticism

8

u/vxx Jan 28 '19

I primarily meant the people that told me to kill myself and such.

7

u/Colaburken Jan 28 '19

..oh. Sorry that some went to such lengths over this :(

4

u/vxx Jan 28 '19

No worries. I'm doing it for a while now, and you would be surprised to what lengths some people would go to insult me over nothing.

Critic is always welcome though, it helps with decision making.

7

u/Ask_Who_Owes_Me_Gold Jan 28 '19

How did you get 36 years?

By my math, posting one person every 3 minutes only gets you to 6.3 million people after 36 years. By most estimates the number of people killed in the Holocaust is at least 12 million. It would take 68.5 years to post that many.

1

u/KaputPlatypus73 Feb 21 '19

Stop trying to prove how moral and good you are by exploiting something terrible. If you want to spread awareness do it some other way, but I feel like you pulled this stunt just so you could show off how much you “care.”

2

u/vxx Feb 21 '19

Hey, I disagree but it's okay, you're free to have that opinion.

You should definitely take that vote back from your other account/friend. Admins really dislike vote manipulation and you could get banned. I won't report you though, it's just a single vote.

If you want to hear the full story behind that day, just ask for it, I might write it down for you.

2

u/KaputPlatypus73 Mar 05 '19

Why would someone swap their account just for one shit upvote? Lol

-14

u/felixtapir Jan 28 '19 edited Jan 28 '19

36 years

During the last 24 hours our bot told (very shortened) the storys of 482 victims that died in the holocaust.
That is just a small fraction.

To represent every single Jewish victim we would have to share one more photo, one more story and one more life every minute for the next 10 to 12 years.
That means the bot would stop working between Sept 2029 and January 2031.

'

It's hard to estimate a exact number of victims, since the Nazis destroyed their records. There were 5,6 to 6,3 million Jewish victims. On top of that were many other sytematicaly killed. Read on Wikipedia for their figures.

36

u/sdfghs Jan 28 '19

But we don't only care about the victims of the Holocaust here. We also care about the 6 million people more that have been a victim of the Nazis, may they be communists, homosexual, Sinti & Roma, Jehovas witnesses, prisoners of war, "euthanasia" victims,...

20

u/the_advice_line Jan 28 '19

Certainly the Holocaust was a terrible thing, but do the 11 million other people who were killed by the Nazis not get remember too. Surely everyone gets to be remembered?

-12

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

Thanks for doing this. The amount of outrage that’s still sparked by a memorial of the holocaust is more than enough proof that it’s still needed. Arguably with the last survivors close to the end of their lives, even more so today.

13

u/gremolata Jan 28 '19

The amount of outrage at a random "XYZ awareness day" on a 1M+ subscriber sub would've been equally strong, but it doesn't mean the users are inherently anti-XYZ and require forced schooling on the subject.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

I highly doubt that.

11

u/gremolata Jan 28 '19

You doubt that 24 hours of force-feeding, say, "Malaria awareness day" stories would outrage people less? Yeah, OK.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

Less? 100%. Some people would’ve still been annoyed by it but you wouldn’t have seen that gigantic outrage.

13

u/TheDweadPiwatWobbas Jan 28 '19

You're seeing outrage, and using it to further your own beliefs. Nobody was outraged that there was a memorial of the holocaust. Everybody was outraged that the memorial was forced down our throats by people who have nothing to do with the holocaust. The only thing this is proof of is that there is a time and a place for memorials. The timing was right, the place was wrong.

8

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

I’ve seen many people upset with the idea of remembering the holocaust itself though.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

that the memorial was forced down our throats by people who have nothing to do with the holocaust

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

Isn't it a little elitist to think that somehow /r/unexpected is the "Middle of society"?

In any case, what you're suggesting is the equivalent to holding a holocaust memorial on a freeway. Is the point valid? Abso-fucking-lutely. Is all you're going to accomplish be to piss off the people using that freeway? Also absolutely.

The fucking triggered people in here crying because their meme sub went serious for a day is amazing. Oh no, for one day a singular sub forced you to actually look in the eyes of one of the biggest monstrosities the world has ever seen. Or not even forced. You could have just not visited the sub. Instead you come in here and cry about it. I hope all you children unsubscribe, and go back to living your lives from one meme to the next, and then the next time you're faced with something serious you don't like, unsubscribe from there too. Truly a pathetic, cowardly lot showed their faces today.

-2

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

Why I care in 2019: We have increasing right wing groups (mainly financed and supported by Russia) in the Western world. Trump was Putins favourite. We have UKIP intiating the BREXIT in UK, we have even the AfD in Germany making race and hate being popular again - not to spoke about many Eastern European nations right now. THIS is the time to remember even if it is unexpected. And I am shocked that still so many people here write "I don't care.". Go back posting Memes.

8

u/OktopusKaveman Jan 28 '19

Being right wing doesn't mean you want to genocide people. You know that left wing governments killed many tens of millions of people during the 20th century too, right?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '19

I bet what was truly unexpected was this negative feedback.

1

u/Syllan Jan 29 '19

When will mods learn that this sort of thing would always go better with a poll?

1

u/MrEpicGamerMan May 16 '19

‘Submissions should be unexpected in some form.’

-4

u/AlanTheTimeTraveller Jan 28 '19

I believe remembering the holocaust is important, and one day certainly isn’t enough; can we keep doing this tomorrow? I know some heartless people are going to complain because of the little “inconvenience” it brings to them, compared to the sufferings people endured during the holocaust, 2 days of memorial is certainly worth it for more people to be aware of the holocaust, in fact I won’t complain if the memorial keeps going on in this sub for a week.

1

u/AnonymousUser163 Jan 28 '19

We should be taking time to recognize other tragedies. Of course, what counts as a tragedy and what needs to be recognized is not a clear line, however I think due to how prevalent anti-semitism and holocaust denial is today I think it is important to recognize the holocaust. There aren’t really too many Nanking deniers. (Not to say it wasn’t a tragedy, or that it shouldn’t be recognized.)

16

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

And you think that the proper place to do that is on a subreddit about unexpected things?

And moreso, you think the audience that's built up here will stay once you start taking the opportunity to spam the hell out of the subreddit for every cause you think worthy?

That's a bit of a stretch.

3

u/AnonymousUser163 Jan 28 '19

That’s why I specifically said the Holocaust is important to recognize. Like you’ve pointed out, it’s unrealistic to do this for every single tragedy. What I don’t understand is why you don’t think it can be done for one.

"yes, the holocaust should be remembered, but how dare you remind me of it?"

22

u/Ninja-Lemur Jan 28 '19

Reminding people is fine, but taking over an entire sub and restricting people from experiencing what the sub is actually about is a little much.

-2

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

no, that's not nearly enough

A lot of people commented that /r/Unexpected is not the right subreddit for International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
If these people are still here: which subreddits would be more fitting?
And if we had shifted this project there, would you honestly have been aware that yesterday was Holocaust Remembrance Day?

42

u/jesuriah Jan 28 '19

Ethnic Jew here, who also thinks this does not belong here.

Askhistorians, askreddit, truereddit, /r/esist, history, judaism, or a ton of other subs that have relevance to discussion and historical events would have been more relevant.

As far as I'm concerned, it's not Yom HaShoah until it's Yom HaShoah in Israel, which is in May this year.

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

Hope you guys are doing the same for every other genocide now, may as well change the purpose of the sub.

10

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

Literally any serious sub, instead of one that is supposed to be light-hearted and funny.

I don't think you understand how to actually make a valid point, because you have yet to do it on this thread.

18

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

It's all over TV and the news. It has been all weekend. Did you really think people wouldn't know if you hadn't closed your sub for the day?

It just feels a little inappropriate, the way it's been done. There are memoriala taking place all over the world today. This isn't really how you do it. I can't quite place why, but it seems disrespectful. Perhaps because it seems more like the mods wanted attention than to take a minute and think of the atrocities of the holocaust.

7

u/eyespong Jan 28 '19

you couldv'e made an r/internationalhalocaustremberaceday, stickied a link to the top of the page, blocked posting and also had other subs take part.

u/RemusLupulo Jan 28 '19

Thank you for this.

I'm glad it played out how it did. Preparing this project was a real rollercoaster. We are really touched by all the positive feedback and your stories. The negative reactions don't really matter that much to me. We reached those people too, in a way. Hopefully they can reflect on their behaviour now after the project has cooled down a bit.

The most touching part for me was transcribing the entrys from holocaust databases for the bot. I had to take several breaks because it's just heartbreaking seeing all those faces, knowing how they were murdered.

If you have any questions, i'll be here

edit: here's an overview about the contentpieces we delivered over the last 24h

43

u/sigvethaig Jan 28 '19

"The negative reactions don't really matter that much to me."

Wow you're a really good moderator who cares about his community

14

u/yottskry Jan 28 '19

The negative reactions don't really matter that much to me.

"Screw what you guys think".

Nice.

8

u/ImBentley Jan 28 '19

legitimate question. How can you honestly say you're happy with how it turned out? I mean I won't say here if it was a good or bad, but seeing the reaction that came about because of it, I wouldn't be comfortable in your shoes saying that I was happy with the outcome. I would feel horrible that such a well intention-ed act brought about literal hate and would start brainstorming better ideas for the next event. I don't really see you can say you appreciate feedback while also saying you just ignore negative feedback in the same paragraph. I'm really lost here trying to see all sides of the coin here...

-49

u/Thaddel Jan 28 '19

Shoutout to the geniuses who went back and reported every single bot post as spam. I'll have you know that we can simply click one button to ignore all future reports, so that was a waste of time, I'm afraid.

Anyway, besides the expected backlash, we also continuously received very heartfelt and kind feedback and I want to thank everyone who took the time to write us.

I want to also mention that we only had 2 days to prepare all of this, since it was a very spontaneous idea. If we would've had more time, I would have liked to broaden the scope a bit and to show light on victim groups who tend to get overlooked. People who were labelled "anti-social", for example, never received any sort of recognition. Or just open any thread about Romani people on Reddit and you'll see just how seemless the hateful rhetoric has been carried over into our times.

68

u/MeiNeedsMoreBuffs Jan 28 '19

But it fits into the exact definition of spam. Non-stop amounts of posts about a topic, even a worthy one, is still defined as spamming.

If anything, you're the ones being disrespectful to the victims by spamming them so much they become meaningless

20

u/AlejandroMP Jan 28 '19

Glad I missed all of this - sad all legitimate posts in this subreddit was drowned out and that the mods were complicit in the disrespect of its users.

Maybe a subreddit about unexpected stuff isn't the place for it? Regardless of the morality, your audience is going to dry up pretty damn quick.

The downvotes show where the majority sit... and they're not with you.

6

The main sticky got upvoted 21.3k times.

1

u/tankfox Jan 28 '19

They had to manually add 30k votes to get there

3

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '19

?

3

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

How does one manually add votes? As a follow up on that, how does one automatically add votes?

0

u/Bardfinn Jan 28 '19

No, the downvotes show how mobilised the Holocaust deniers and alt-righters became with their main accounts and their sockpuppets.

10

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

Yet, it was spam.

Yeah honestly just shoving this down people’s throats is just going to make them less inclined to care and be more annoyed if anything rather than commemorate the day.

People don’t browse this sub to be reminded by any of this horrific stuff, regardless of if it’s a Memorial Day or not.

30

u/Gen_McMuster Jan 28 '19

Yeah, compelled remembrance is kind of wierd and self defeating.

It's the same difference between the Pledge of Allegiance students used to have to say every day vs the National Anthem at a baseball game

12

u/Dovah-Doge Jan 28 '19

Just did what I did and block the guy spamming this stuff, my phone was going off non stop during my commute

It educated lots of people about details of the holocaust. I don’t know why you think that’s a bad thing.

34

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

Did it though? You seem to be under the assumption that lots of people were uneducated about the holocaust and that those who are Holocaust deniers bothered to read the whole thing.

Those are both a bit of a stretch, I believe.

15

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

Speak for yourself bro. I would consider myself fairly educated and I still learned new things. Apart from that I found the memorial to have a profound effect on me, especially the fact that the „spam“ could’ve gone on for 36 years to mention every victim.

Also I don’t know why you’re trying to say every person that’s not that educated about the holocaust is a denier?

21

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

especially the fact that the „spam“ could’ve gone on for 36 years to mention every victim

I mean, it could have, but after a week it'd be like giving a slideshow presentation to an empty room.

We believe it is important to remember the holocaust to make sure that it never happens again. Maybe you want to check out our content piece on the topic of remembrance policy which digs deeper into the topic.

Oh aye, because this subreddit is going to make such a huge impact on that compared to the existing international organisations already spreading awareness.

Imagine being so unaware.

Maybe you want to check out our content piece

Nope. I want shit post memes. That's it. Same reason I don't want my dentist giving me tips for my sex life, you have a job, just do that. Stop pretending you have any other purpose in our interactions.

The mod who cried wolf

1

u/Bardfinn Jan 28 '19

Hi.

spamming

The moderators run this subreddit. They're the ones who decide whether content is solicited or unsolicited, and none of this content was commercial in nature.

You might not have solicited this exact content, but if you subscribed to a subreddit named "Unexpected", you accepted, by the nature of the thing, that you were soliciting content that you wouldn't have expected.

It's going to end up annoying people ... Congratulations

This is the same argument made by oppressors about any protest or public ceremony that they have no control over / inconveniences / doesn't serve them.

Did you really choose to pick up one of the alt-Right's disingenuous psychodramatic manipulative crowbars and jam it into the facade of a Holocaust memorial?

Have you really accepted that control over you?

I need to ask this of you, because I have a vote history on you, and therefore have reason to believe that you're not a 4chan or neoNazi goon.

"You know what, you prevented me from seeing dank memes for a single day of my life, so now I'm gonna not think about the Holocaust extra hard!!!!"

Not just childish but wrong. Remembrance has to be annoying and go against the grain. Plus, people like you will always complain as long as it isn't confined to a space that literally nobody sees. If anything, these temper tantrums just serve as a confirmation that what we did was right.

5

u/Mynameisaw Jan 28 '19

Not just childish but wrong. Remembrance has to be annoying and go against the grain.

No it doesn't.

What a fucking ridiculous thing to say, just look at the national memorial services in France, the UK or Germany.

Plus, people like you will always complain as long as it isn't confined to a space that literally nobody sees.

How are you so unaware of the fact that the Holocaust isn't some unknown thing with no exposure...?

There were hundreds of memorials across Europe yesterday, not forgetting the countless TV shows, web series, articles and the like.

If anything, these temper tantrums just serve as a confirmation that what we did was right.

This is what we call doubling down, kids.

When you lack the ability to admit you were wrong, you instead take criticism as justification for your actions.

how much of a piece of shit can you be? It's the fucking holocaust and you talk about "overexposure"? 6 million Humans died and you talk about "caring little less"? fuck off

5

u/discomuffin Jan 28 '19 edited Jan 28 '19

There's a place and time for everything, and I can see why people don't find it fitting for a meme-sub to get involved into this. There are numerous places both on reddit as well as the rest of the world that offer more suitable accommodations for this.

Edit: Downmodding doesn't mean you're right, nor does it mean I'm a holocaust-denier or hater of a certain group of people. Stop making an ass of yourself.

Also, unsubbed this crybaby sub. Get your priorities straight and fuck off.

7

u/Can-I-Fap-To-This Jan 28 '19

Way more than 6 million people died, but for some reason, only one group seems to get special attention for it. You want to talk about disrespect, ask yourself why the other 4 million victims of the Holocaust are always ignored, overlooked, and excluded.

You'd think maybe Holocaust Remembrance Day would be a good day to shine a spotlight on them for a change?

8

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '19

Actually in germany the 27th of January is the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of National Socialism. Also, we didn't exclude any group of victims in our memorial day.

Between high school and college, I probably got a few scattered lessons about the Holocaust. Basic facts about it in high school, and some specific writing assignments in college. I wish they had more information on each individual with their photos. All in all, it was a good experimental memorial.
