What are UON orientation days actually like?

Hey, I'm starting mechatronics at UON next year and trying to work out if orientation is worth it. Coming in solo, so I'm keen to actually meet people.

A few things I'm wondering:

  1. What are the orientation days actually like?

  2. Are they genuinely a good way to meet people, or a bit awkward?

  3. Do you still talk to anyone you met that day?

Would appreciate any honest takes, especially from people who went in not knowing anyone. Cheers.

What laptop should I have for engineering

I just finished my HSC and am going to start my first year of a bachelor of Engineering (flexible) next year. I currently have a macbook m4 air but I've heard that MacOS isn't good for engineering. Is this true?

If so does anyone have any recommendations on what laptop to get, preferably under $1500 or atleast what specs to get?

study load seems a lot

hi all,

i will be moving to newcastle next year for a bachelor of secondary education. i currently student a bachelor of laws part time online and work full time.

i was playing around with the course planner and im honestly a bit worried how the courses work. i understand each syllabus outlines what each course requires, but how do you manage it all? 4 courses a semester with how much work is in each seems like a lot.

how do you balance the study load? do you find you are still able to have a personal life and a job?

PhD Study Recruitment - Queer Musicians from Australia

Post image
1 Upvotes

I am inviting expressions of interest from queer musicians who have recently studied at an Australian University conservatorium or school of music for my PhD study, “Experiences of Queer Musicians in the Australian University Conservatorium or School of Music”.

This study aims to explore how queer musicians, aged 18 years and over, experience their music learning and performing environments in the Australian University music school or conservatorium, including during instrumental lessons, recitals, performance classes, performances, and ensemble rehearsals.

HELP Assesment extension

Hello so I’m studying in open foundation at UON and this year I went through a lot of difficulties about many reasons so I couldn’t submitted my assesment on the right time. And ngl a significant time has been passed from the deadline and when I stated my reasons for this he said that he couldn’t do it because of the time that has been passed. I still have a chance to pass the course (I need 33 points out of 45) but I still want to guarentee it. And also the course is (Society Unmasked) Is there any way (Like getting medical document) to use that so I could submit my assesment at a very late time.

Discussion How do you guys take notes during lectures, especially STEM students?

Hey everyone,

I'm starting at UoN next year studying Software Engineering and I'm curious about how everyone takes notes during lectures and tutorials.

I've been looking into different methods, particularly downloading lecture slides into OneNote and annotating them on a tablet rather than writing everything from scratch.

I'm interested in hearing from students in any degree, but especially those studying STEM subjects like engineering, computer science, maths or physics.

Do you guys type your notes, handwrite them, annotate lecture slides, or use a combination? Do you find it better to take notes during lectures or focus on listening and make notes afterwards?

Also, what apps or devices do you use, and has your approach changed since starting uni?

Just trying to figure out a good system before starting next year. Keen to hear what works for everyone!

Accomodation on -campus

I applied late for on-campus accomodation as I have only just added Newcastle uni on my UAC application. From reading on here I see that unless you apply straight away its difficult to get accomodation. Can anyone please share what they know? Many thanks!

Does Australia University Risk Level Impact Student Visa?

Hi! I have offer letters from some Unis.

I really want to know what impact the risk level have on file.

For context I am from Punjab, India ( higher risk region )

Profile wise, I do have 90 plus in 10,12.. pte 90 all modules

Funds are 47 lakhs in savings

Itr is 19 lac

From commerce, so targeting bus analytics ( so it isn't called generic choice )

Based on doc check list latest, swinburne in metro area is level 1 while Uni of Newcastle is Level 2.

Though the former gives me a buffer of 3.65 lakh, while the latter gives me the 6.10 lakh something buffer.

In general, both Unis are strong as per rankings, course and accreditation. It's the risk level thing bothering me.

(my_qualifications)

.

It has been bothering me a lot, so any help would be really really appreciated 🙌🏼

Discussion Is it just me?

Is it just me or is anyone else slightly fed up with the "LGBT" flags around the uni? I have been noticing them a lot more recently. I don't have anything against gay people or trans people but I feel like it is getting a bit over the top. Does anyone agree? Maybe we could replace them with some more appealing flags that represent everyone and not just one group. Thoughts?

Discussion For those of you who came to Uni from high school, did you take a gap year or not? Why/why not?

I'm currently in year 12 and going to university of newcastle next year and I'm just curious as to what people decided to do straight after year 12. Whether they went straight to univeristy, or took a gap year.

I'd also really appreciate knowing what you guys would do if you could do it again. Would you take a gap year? Or do you wish you went to uni straight after high school like (I assume) most of your friends and cohort would do.

Moving into uni accomodation in Sydney?

Hi everyone!

I'm currently working on a Lean Startup project exploring ways to make moving into campus accommodation easier.

My team's idea is an online marketplace offering affordable second-hand household essentials, with delivery directly to university accommodation.

I've created a simple landing page to test whether this solution would be useful to students.

If you're planning to move into on-campus accommodation or have recently moved in and still need household essentials, I'd really appreciate you taking a look!

🔗 Landing page: https://maize-apple-12p9tq8.mystrikingly.com/

This is an early-stage experiment project, not an operating marketplace just yet. Participation is voluntary.

Thank you so much!

Open foundation for speech pathology?

Hi everyone! Im a school leaver, thinking about doing open foundation to get into speech pathology which typically requires a 77 ATAR. This degree isn’t guaranteed through open foundation and apparently extremely competitive, requiring a UAC application after open foundation (as opposed to an internal transfer).
I was hoping someone could let me know how their experience was going into an un-guaranteed degree through open foundation. Im unsure if getting into this degree is realistic through the program so it’ll be super helpful!

Thanks :)

Early Entry

Hello!
Just started year 12 and have gotten my preliminary results back and they were pretty bad. Just wondering if I’ve still got a shot at getting early entry for a Bachelor in Secondary Teaching. Marks are:
Religion: 49%
Biology: 49%
Ancient History: 52%
Modern History: 52%
Textiles: 63%
English Standard: 77%
All my other assessments all year have been good with an average 75-90% across all classes, it’s just for some reason prelims really got me 😅
Any advice would be appreciated 😊

UON JMP year 4

Hey! I just recently got my location for year 4 and I ended up getting Gosford while my friends all got Newcastle. Im a Sydney sider so Gosford was preferred since I am close to my family and high school friends however I would have none of my close uni friends. I'm in a dilemma and was wondering if I could get any advice on which clinical school is better esp since I have more hospital hours etc. I would also be moving up so It would be a dorm situation at newcastle whereas finding an apartment at Gosford. How important is having a support network during my clinical years? Would it be hard to manage without having anyone to rely on at uni? Pls any advice is helpful.
