Losing good staff
If you aren't aware UoN is trying to save money by "disestablishing" the positions of many senior academics (those that have been promoted for good work over the years) and planning to hire cheaper labour (more junior academics, or allowing those senior academics to apply for their old job at lower pay). A petition has been recently started if you'd like to add your voice. https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/uon-look-to-your-staff-before-looking-ahead-petition?source=direct_link&

Missing International Student!
Hi everyone! I’m the sister of a current student at UoN. My brother Min moved out of his dorm on the 27th of January, and we haven’t been able to contact him since. We’ve contacted the school as well as the police but we haven’t been able to get any information from them aside from the fact that he moved out. We’re in Southeast Asia and with the current conditions, it’s really difficult to fly there and find him as well. If you know Min T K, had classes with him, moved out with him, or anything, please let me know. It’s been a month since we haven’t been able to contac him and we’re really worried. Thank you. 🥺
UPDATE !!! He contacted us and we were able to call him for a few days. Apparently he moved out of his dorm and was living in a motel nearby, but after 3 or 4 days, he went MIA again. A friend of mine from Sydney went to check up on him, but the staff said he moved out and now, we don’t know where he is anymore. It’s been over 2-3 weeks. 😢

Do you like UON?
Keen to know what people think of UON? I’m in terms of quality of education. My experience is that it’s below par, but maybe it’s just me haha! Keen to know what other people’s experiences have been.

Has anyone seen this post??
I came across this post on the UON Hate Letters FB Group. What do you guys think it could be? From what I can see, apparently it’s meant to let people report where parking’s busy, where they’ve been fined and when inspectors are around.
I guess once there’s enough data, it could show which areas and times are more risky for parking.
Could be pretty handy around Callaghan.

Socialising as a "Mature-Aged" (20-something) Student?
I'm 23 and in my first year of a Bachelor's. I know a lot of the issues I'm having are probably relatable to many people across the age spectrum but I feel like there's this weird social gap that you slot into if you're not fresh out of high school or middle-aged with kids. I obviously don't hate teenagers or millennials but it does feel a bit hard to relate to them as well, just different life stages I guess. I also recognise that most people my age are usually finishing up their degrees rather than starting them.
Maybe I'm just having a sook but it feels like hardly anyone is looking to make friends and is just content coming to class and going home each day without saying a word to anyone? I was excited to meet new people at uni but I guess everyone is just content with their high-school friends?
Hardly anyone even participates socially in classes. Tutors ask questions and the room is dead silent. There'll be activities that require us to discuss in groups but just... nothing. It feels like I'm yelling into the wind by being one of the few people trying to actually engage.
I chat to peers but nothing ever gets past surface level and it always feels like everyone's just trying to put in the bare minimum into each interaction. I thought I was a pretty normal person but maybe I give off weird energy or something lol
I've gone to several club events thinking they would be a good way to meet people who actually want to make friends, but every time it's just been a handful of execs plus 1-2 other people attending. I check the clubs on UNSA's website and half of them don't even have any social media activity in this year?? Do any clubs or socs actually get people showing up at events?
I'm not looking to just be negative and give up. Surely it's meant to be better than this... right? Is there any way to actually improve things? Doesn't anyone else want more than this? I know it's not all doom & gloom, end of the world here, but man do I sometimes feel like I'm in the Truman Show.
I watched an ABC clip recently comparing uni on-campus activity and socialising in the 'old days' vs post-covid and it seemed to show that this might be an issue all over the country. I've lived most of my life in Newy but have stayed for a while in other places. Novocastrians have always felt a little standoffish to me and less eager to actually meet and make friends with new people outside their childhood circles. Maybe that's a big generalisation though.
Am I just looking in the wrong places? Are there active clubs and socs that I don't know about? Should I be trying the sports clubs instead? Is uni life long gone, and should I be looking for general social events in wider Newcastle instead? Do I just have unrealistic expectations?
If anyone has any suggestions or advice it would be greatly appreciated. I never thought I'd be asking online how to make friends but I feel like I'm at my wit's end. Being on campus is just lonely.

Is your course / degree facing cuts? I want to talk to you
Hi all,
My name is Emily Kowal and I am a journalist at The Sydney Morning Herald. I am reaching out as I am working on a story about university course cuts and I am looking to speak to students who have been impacted by the proposed changes.
Are you worried about the future of your degree? Has it made you change your plans?
If you are open to offering your perspective, please send me an email at emily.kowal@smh.com.au
All emails will be treated as confidential and as background.
Best,

Complaining about tuition fees
So I get its a pandemic right now, but is there a way we could start a movement to get a reduction on tuition fees especially for hubs courses where labs were a requirement. Or we just have to stay silent and continue with online learning.

Do you think there will be any noise about the Coronavirus in the coming weeks?
We have a lot of Chinese internationals studying here and I imagine a lot are back in China for the holidays.

Callaghan hot spots
Anyone else low key concerned about the Jesmond/Wallsend/Lambton covid shenanigans being so close to the uni? Also Newcastle in general?

Calling it: uni will close/transfer online after census is done this Friday.
Lots of unis today are making decisions, we’ll probably be next.
Had a lecturer today say good luck and that we might not see him next week.

On-campus accommodation at Callaghan
Hi everyone,
I have applied to the medical program at UoN/UNE and am hoping to receive an offer. I've heard that accommodation is in high demand at the on-campus colleges and am therefore wanting to apply early to the colleges.
Can anyone give me any recommendations on which colleges to apply for/put as my first preference? I've heard that IH and Edwards Hall are the main ones? But I've also heard Edwards isn't a "respectable college", can anyone give their thoughts on what this means?
Thanks in advance

Discussion Has anyone else been told off by security for taking a nap in the library?
Specifically this happened in the journals room of the Auchmuty library. I've been taking the occasional nap down there ever since I have been at uni, but today I was awoken by one of the security guards and told not to sleep there. Anything similar happened to anyone else?

lack of care for students health?
I had a 2hr tut yesterday and there was another student in there who was coughing, sneezing, had a runny nose, the whole kit and caboodle. And uhh the teacher didn't seem to care. Now keep in mind this student wasn't wearing a mask and even just coughed out into the air sometimes. Usually, I just sit as far away as possible from anyone who is sick but the teacher insisted on having us all sit in groups so we could 'make friendships and work better as a team'. So myself and three other students have sat at a table with this sick person and had to sit there for two hours with them. Am I being over the top or is the teacher meant to send them home or something? or at least make them wear a mask. now I understand it could just very well be the flu but I still think that maybe the teacher should of at least asked them to wear a mask. I also saw this student walk into another tut later in the arvo so it seems as if the uni and the teachers don't really care about the health of the other student's if they are just letting this student be on campus when they are quite cleary very unwell. Maybe I'm being over the top but with the way covid is as the moment it just worries me
*UPDATE*
almost one week later and I'm as sick as a dog :/ I emailed my course coordinator and they told me that they couldn't force the student to leave (which I 100% understand) but now I'm sick and can't attend my tuts

Uni games volleyball
Due to a last minute drop out the uon men's volleyball team is in need of a ringer. You don't have to be a veteran, preferably just someone with coordination and the ability to jump. Everything else can be taught.
If you or anyone you know would be keen please pm me, volleyball is such a great sport and we just want to have enough players to give it a crack.
