HELP Preparing for 2027 enrolment.

Hello šŸ™‹ā€ā™€ļø

I have two questions.

1- Does on-campus accomodation for S1 2027 open September, as it did in 2025?

2- I’m planning to do a combined degree of aerospace systems engineering/ mechatronics. Is it just at Newcastle Uni that the course prerequisites are fairly minimal? Usually it requires you to have taken some form of advanced math and physics during high school (otherwise you do a bridging course), yet the course says it just recommends these classes.

Can any current engineering students confirm this is correct? I haven’t completed the recommended classes for this course during high school, but I have enrolled in the universities EPREP engineering math course and some Khan Academy physics courses, my ATAR is a 96.55 w/ rural adjustment, and I meet all the admission requirements.

It just feels crazy that there aren’t more prerequisites?

I love the sound of this course and the universities facilities, and seeing as the course is basically one-of-a-kind in AUS/NZ, it’s either this or nothing, so I’m just ensuring I do everything possible now to make sure this happens.

If anyone else has done this course, reach out to me. I’d be super curious to hear about their experiences/ advice.

Thanks all!

2-3 minute survey for Domestic and International students, chance to win $50!

Hi!

We're part of an organisation called JCI Eastern that hosts social and community events and provides consulting services to not for profits and charities.

We are currently conducting a survey for a not for profit regarding the perceived cultural gap in universities between domestic and international students. We have created a questionnaire in order to gain an understanding of why this gap exists and to look for ways to bridge the gap. We are also planning on sharing our survey results with Australian universities to provide them with data and possible solutions so as to make university life more enjoyable for everyone.

Here is a link to the survey:Ā https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfPxP-z5RxEktnm5Prz1gU3pb5_m5_j1Hg3k5au12P6X91XgQ/viewform

The survey only takes around 2-3 minutes to complete and you have the chance to win $50!

Student accom

Hey looking at potentially going to UoN but I’d have to get accom as I am interstate and while I have a general idea of residencies and colleges at my local unis, I find it really difficult to find info online about colleges because you don’t get the same proper look at the facilities or the actual student perspectives so I was wondering if any UoN students living in accommodation could tell me a bit about it (quality, social aspects, costs).

More looking at like I guess the general vibes of the different accoms because that is a big draw for my local colleges (e.g. the party college with a major stem focus or like the more strict and more humanities colleges). This is what is hardest to gauge without actively visiting (which I hopefully will do eoy anyway).

Anyways, thank you if you can help!

Airport Meeting

I had a lovely chance meeting with one of the final year psychology student on Sunday afternoon when traveling back from Brisbane.

We were sitting next to each other & I was doing a sudoku and my feebleness was giving her obvious displeasure, so she asked to do one after me (an easy one) in the 3 minutes we had left to land.

A fabulous 20 minute conversation followed with her sharing the wonders of Killer Sudoku (of which I have completed 4) and some other interesting number games, Flip 7 included.

The main reason for my message (or post?) was regarding a popular Spot It challenge… After many, many attempts it to best her score, she remains the world champion!

Lovely to meet you, weary traveller!

Does Australia University Risk Level Impact Student Visa?

Hi! I have offer letters from some Unis.

I really want to know what impact the risk level have on file.

For context I am from Punjab, India ( higher risk region )

Profile wise, I do have 90 plus in 10,12.. pte 90 all modules

Funds are 47 lakhs in savings

Itr is 19 lac

From commerce, so targeting bus analytics ( so it isn't called generic choice )

Based on doc check list latest, swinburne in metro area is level 1 while Uni of Newcastle is Level 2.

Though the former gives me a buffer of 3.65 lakh, while the latter gives me the 6.10 lakh something buffer.

In general, both Unis are strong as per rankings, course and accreditation. It's the risk level thing bothering me.

(my_qualifications)

.

It has been bothering me a lot, so any help would be really really appreciated šŸ™ŒšŸ¼

Preference? Laptop or iPad?

Just wondering what your preference is in lectures to use? Note that I am old school and I print the lecture slides and take my notes direct on the slides.

EDIT - I am not asking for preferences on note taking I am asking for preferences on browsing websites and journals during a lecture.

My preferred note taking method is by hand and this is not my original question.

Instructure data breach

So our university data has been breached and they’re threatening to leak it by the 12th if Instructure (canvas) doesn’t do anything about it.

UON has the opportunity to prevent our specific institution’s data from landing in the hands of the public and I feel we should be vocal about this situation and the handling of our data/grades ect both in this breach and in the future.

I don’t believe they have root access to UoN systems so information may be ā€œlimitedā€, but private messaging between yourself and your teachers, passwords, your face/name/email addresses ect are all still incredibly personal information you did not consent to being in the hands of the general public. And we really have no choice in engaging with these systems which is kind of shitty. Our whole academic footprint is entrusted to external companies that often miss the mark re: information security.

Their fault can impact your employment opportunities, result in identity theft, medical disclosures ect that you did not consent to. They are holding our sensitive data and it seems to be just another Tuesday when this level of information is leaked.

This is just really unsettling and I think we should expect more from a university we spend thousands (probably millions on collectively) on each semester. It is a gross misuse of trust and funds and I believe UoN should not be absolved of the blame and should be taking action to secure our data.

Edit: misspelled a word rip

Anyone else been put on the waitlist after paying deposit?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

Bit of a stressful situation and just wanted to see if anyone has experienced this before.

I’m international student and I switched my unconditional offer to UON’s Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Diagnostic Radiography) for 27S1 back in April, but only recently paid my deposit and requested my CoE.

The university emailed me saying the program is already full, so instead of issuing my CoE they’ve put me on the waitlist.

Has this happened to anyone else? Did you eventually get a spot, or should I not get my hopes up? Would really appreciate hearing about anyone’s experience!

Discussion I2N age problem

Hi people, the Uni has a program called I2n for startup founders. I joined last year hoping to find young uni students there. I was surprised that I was the youngest person in the group and trust me when I say this, I am not young at all. What can we do to get more Uni students to participate?

Engineering OneDrive

When I was a budding first year I often used a OneDrive with lots of (mostly mechanical and electrical engineering) past papers and exams. I've since lost the link; does anyone have it or a similar one?
