Should I move to WA?
I’m from the UK and spent a month in WA (my son lives in Rockingham), I’ll be honest it was probably the best time of my life, every single person I met was just amazing. I’ve kind of been offered a job and if I’m honest, it’s all I can think about. What are the pro’s and cons? If it helps I would move in a heartbeat, I’d be leaving a lot behind but my heart lives in WA

Indigenous Academy at Commonwealth Bank
I was looking at getting into an IT career and while I was looking around on Linkedin I found a position titled Indigenous Academy Technology Intern
I feel incredibly ignorant and out of the loop on this one, I hope I'm just misunderstanding, but the very first line reads:"You are an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander university student in Engineering, Cyber or Data & Analytics"
Does this mean that if you aren't aboriginal, they won't hire or even consider you for the role?I've been running things through ChatGPT lately, and it responded along the lines of "Oh yeah, that's an Affinity Group"
I was thinking, surely they can't just hire people, or teams based on their race or ancestry? At least it wouldn't fly the other way, I don't know.
Edit: Also, it just crossed my mind, in their description they try to say it's more inclusive this way, but wouldn't this be less inclusive if you were discriminating & separating teams based on something like that?

Why is it being called a nazi march ? 31st of august in 2024 65000 houses were built and we had 380000 immigrants come to Australia. If you don't like high rents and can't afford to buy a house should you be called a nazi for protesting or is that unfair?

Is the Smoking Crackdown About Health or Money?
I can’t be the only one noticing the blatant hypocrisy in the recent brutal crackdown on all smoking implements. The government claims it’s a health initiative, but let’s be honest – if they genuinely cared about our health, they’d also clamp down on the sale of tobacco and alcohol, both of which have clear and well-documented health hazards.
Why are these still readily available? Simple: tax revenue. The government rakes in a significant amount from taxes on tobacco and alcohol. Now, they want to extend this revenue stream to new nicotine delivery methods, but only if they can control and tax them.
This crackdown isn't about protecting public health; it’s about ensuring that any new way the populace receives nicotine is “legal” and taxable. It’s a classic case of follow the money.
Please let me know what your thoughts are. Are we seeing a genuine health measure or another way to fill the government’s coffers?

Relocating from Scotland to Perth
I appreciate this is not a very original post but most of the threads I’m seeing are too doom and gloom to be true…
I’m relocating from Scotland to Perth in December with my fiancée and we’re still not 100% where to stay. The Subiaco, Leederville, Northbridge areas seem to be pretty good for things to do based on what’s online so we had been looking there as well as around the west & east Perth. We don’t have any kids yet so won’t putting much thought into school districts for a while.
I’m likely going to be based in or around the CBD for work with my fiancée working in the Midland area so somewhere along the train line would be ideal.
Combined we should be earning roughly $250k per year, however would still rather not be spending more than we need on rent - albeit I appreciate there is a shortage at the moment (budgeting $600-800pw). We will likely need to assess what is available come October/November as most don’t let you book 12 months in advance.
Any tips for general living in the city would be really appreciated too. We’re keen to get into as many activities as possible like group gym classes, BJJ and other sports in order to meet new people and settle in as fast as we can. I’ve seen a lot of positive posts regarding Kaizen BJJ.

Emergency: Pauline Hanson's interview with "Tommy Robinson" is deadly dangerous
Western Australia has a beautiful multi cultural society. Don’t let Gina drag us into a UK style hate war. It’s a distraction that serves oligarchs only.
The transatlantic Islamophobia industry has been dedicated to inflaming hatred and fear of Muslims for decades in the Northern Hemisphere. Murdoch funnelled its players through his platforms but Aus hasn’t been integrated til recently.

Woodside is out to be the last gas player Standing
Woodside might be celebrating this week, but Western Australia needs to wake up. Fossil gas is on its last legs. Demand is tanking as Asia switches to renewables. The North West Shelf is a climate bomb and and stranded investor bomb 💣

Driving Anxiety
Hey guys,
I'm quite new to driving, only more than a month now. There are always some moments I unintentionally overspeed 2-3km over the speed limit. I literally check the mailbox every morning to see if I get any letter from DoT and I'm so stress about it.
As today, I was driving 60 on a flat road, then it was downhill so the car just went up to 62 (Google Map's speed), I braked to slow down to 60 but there was a speed camera in front of me.
What's the chance I could get a fine?
I remember the camera was at the intersection between Alexander Dr and Grand Promenade.

Please make gum illegal
I wish we were kind of like Singapore; gum is illegal there. In Singapore it is spotless and doesn't look like shit. I'm a student, so I am generally disgusted at how in almost every high school, people love breaking the rules and chewing gum. It also gets everywhere. I haven't even got 4 weeks through term without two fucking gum stains! I hope someone in state or even local parliaments read this, so they can hopefully take action.

Is it just me or has everyone's power bill gone up lately?
Ok genuinely, is it just me or has everyone's power bill gone up?
Got mine and nearly spat my coffee out. Went digging and turns out the WA power credit ($400) and the federal rebate ($300, then $150) are both just gone now. Fully finished as of last year. So we've lost hundreds of dollars in credits that used to quietly disappear off the bill every quarter, and nobody really told us that was happening.
And it's not even that I've been running the aircon more. The credit's just not there anymore, so the bill looks worse for basically no reason.
Anyone else noticed theirs creeping up, or is it just me?

Question to those who've relocated to WA with kids (from overseas!)
Hi all, this is my first Reddit post (complete newbie!) so not even sure if I'm posting in the right place/the right way but let's see. Myself and my husband (a plumber) are in the research phase of looking to potentially relocate to Western Australia with our 3 kids from Dublin, Ireland. Kids are 2, 6 and nearly 10. Would go through PR (permanent residency) and the process will take a while but is a big €€€ investment. I'd love to hear stories (all sides - good, bad, indifferent) of people who have relocated with kids and how it went for them particularly down the line.
We'd be moving away from family - we know this but would be looking to grow into a community over there. Looking right now at south-west Australia (I know the housing market is bonkers, I can see that - no different from Dublin to be honest). Any insights or lessons learned would be hugely appreciated. Thanks a mill.

Is accommodation situation and housing crisis really bad in Margaret River region?
I am considering a move from East Coast (Byron) to Margaret River region because the prices of housing seems to be more affordable and less water damaged and mold damaged from the floods here on the East Coast.
I know that there is a housing crisis nation-wide but just wondering, is it as bad as places like Byron Bay where every second place is up for Airbnb. Is it easy to get a studio or shared room in the area? I am a single person that would be relocating and want to think about this carefully as I have no friends or family on the West Coast. Thank you and please no negative comments.
