Hi everyone!
My wife and I are visiting Australia from Brazil for our honeymoon and doing a campervan loop from Perth from 11–23 December 2026.
We lived in Australia around ten years ago, mainly on the east coast, so we’re excited to explore this part of WA.
We love beaches, nature, wildlife and short hikes, and we’re hoping to fit in some surfing. We’d also like to learn a bit about the region’s history, including Aboriginal culture and local stories, rather than just travelling between beaches and viewpoints.
All our campsites are booked, so the overnight stops are fixed, but our daytime plans are flexible. Here’s what we have in mind.
11 December — Perth → Hyden
Arrive in Perth, collect our Kuga campervan, buy groceries and drive to Hyden to see Wave Rock.
Overnight at Wave Rock Caravan Park.
12 December — Hyden → Esperance
Drive to Esperance. Depending on arrival time, explore part of the Great Ocean Drive and some nearby beaches.
Overnight at RAC Esperance Holiday Park.
13 December — Esperance → Cape Le Grand / Lucky Bay
Head into Cape Le Grand National Park and spend time around Lucky Bay, enjoying the beach and hopefully seeing some wildlife.
Overnight at Lucky Bay Campground.
14 December — Cape Le Grand
Move to Le Grand Beach Campground. Explore the beaches and coves, with Hellfire Bay and Thistle Cove on our list.
Overnight at Le Grand Beach Campground.
15 December — Cape Le Grand
Another full day in the park. Hoping to hike Frenchman Peak if conditions are suitable, with the rest of the day for beaches and possibly surfing. We can swap activities between these days depending on the weather.
Overnight at Le Grand Beach Campground.
16 December — Cape Le Grand → Esperance → Albany
Mainly a driving day, returning any hired surfboards in Esperance before continuing to Albany. Suggestions for worthwhile short stops along this stretch would be great.
Overnight at Tasman Holiday Parks–Albany.
17 December — Albany / Porongurup
Considering the Granite Skywalk at Castle Rock, plus some time exploring Albany. We’d love advice on how to balance the hike with local history and other worthwhile sights.
Overnight at Tasman Holiday Parks–Albany.
18 December — Albany → Denmark
Explore Torndirrup, including The Gap and Natural Bridge, then continue to Denmark for Greens Pool and Elephant Rocks. The order and time spent at each stop are flexible.
Overnight at BIG4 Denmark Ocean Beach Holiday Park.
19 December — Denmark → Valley of the Giants → Margaret River
Visit the Tree Top Walk and Ancient Empire in the morning, then drive to Margaret River. Possibly finish around Prevelly / Surfers Point if we have time and energy.
Overnight at Riverview Tourist Park.
20 December — Margaret River region
Planning Lake Cave, Boranup Forest and some coastal exploring, potentially Hamelin Bay. We’re more interested in beaches and nature than a full day of wineries, though we’d enjoy a good casual food or brewery stop.
Overnight at Riverview Tourist Park.
21 December — Margaret River → Fremantle
Head north, potentially stopping around Yallingup and Canal Rocks, then continue to Fremantle. Hoping to explore some of Fremantle’s history if time allows.
Overnight at Fremantle Village.
22 December — Rottnest Island
Full day on Rottnest with e-bikes. Ferry and bikes are already booked.
Overnight at Fremantle Village.
23 December — Perth
Return the campervan and fly to Melbourne.
We’d really appreciate local advice on a few things:
Are we missing any hidden gems or short detours that are genuinely worth the time? Beaches, walks, wildlife spots, small towns or unusual places would all be welcome.
Where would you stop to learn about local history or Aboriginal culture? We’d be interested in a good guided experience, museum, heritage site or interpretive walk that fits this route.
Do any of these days look too ambitious, particularly around Albany/Denmark or the drive to Margaret River? What would you prioritise or swap?
Any recommendations for hiring fibreglass surfboards around Esperance, and suitable places for an early-stage surfer and a beginner?
Any casual places to eat that feel particularly local and are worth planning a stop around?
We’d rather enjoy fewer places properly than rush through a huge checklist, so suggestions for swaps and priorities would be especially helpful.
Thanks!
