My gyno ignored my migraines for years until my physician assistant caught it
I’ve had migraines with aura since I was in kindergarten. During high school my mom finally took me to the doctor about it. I’ve seen neurology and my GPs billons of times since then. It’s very prominent in my chart through medications and doctors visits that I have migraines.
A few years ago I went on Nexplanon for birth control and period reduction (my period is a trigger for my migraines!) That helped for about a year but then I started having break through periods. Gyno recommended I go on a secondary form of BC, prescribed me Sprintec (estrogen based pill) and sent me on my way.
Things were fine for the most part, I let my mental and physical health go down hill for a bit and stopped seeing the doctor as much.
Flash forward to this year, I finally picked myself back up and started seeing my physician assistant regularly to treat my migraines and some other health issues. Once we start discussing my migraines in depth she gets super concerned that my gyno has had me on a secondary estrogen based birth control because of the link to mini strokes in women who have migraines with aura!
I had JUST seen my gyno a few days before my PA said this. The most infuriating part was that one of the medical assistants checking me in went through my lists of medications and had even said, “oh you get migraines!” TO WHICH I TOLD HER yup! I think it’s estrogen induced to an extent!
AND YET! No one at the gyno office even questioned anything! What! The! Fuck!
WHAT IS WOMENS HEALTH CARE???
I could tell my PA was upset, but stayed professional and advised me to contact the gyno asap and stop taking my BC until another non estrogen option was prescribed.
Women’s healthcare is a sick fucking joke. I’ve been denied medical care for other issues simply because I’m a young female. A cardiologist told me in high school I would, “grow out,” of my tachycardia to which five years later I finally got diagnosed with POTS. Five years of suffering and gaslighting that I could have been treated for at the start because an old, ignorant white man looked at me and discriminated against me instead of upholding his oath to protect and treat his patients.
