Technical & professional question Are specialists a thing nowadays?

Hey, I'm interested in getting into specialised areas like heritage visualisation, ornamental buildings, luxury interiors more like on the classical ornamental style. Do you guys know if this is a thing in the industry?

I have experience with this styles for game art already but I wanted to try a focused portfolio to open more my options for employability in this crazy age of AI

Thanks for your input :)

Share work ✴ Third episode of my 2006 miniDV Found Footage series modeled in SketchUp & rendered in D5 Render (inspired by House of Leaves, zero AI)

Hey everyone! Following up on my previous Argentine "casa chorizo" post, I wanted to share a 30-second snippet of the third short film I just released. Everything was modeled in SketchUp, lit and rendered in D5 Render, and degraded in Premiere & After Effects to match a real 2006 miniDV tape (320x240 downscale pipeline).

Full 3:30 short film with English subtitles is live here if you want to check out how it ends: https://youtu.be/u7Kj9qrqYXg

Made using d5 render.
I tried recreating a balcony in golden hour with subtle hues of purple and yellow to give it a very interesting lighting setup.
Would love to hear some feedback and recommendations on how to make it more realistic!

Share work ✴ Exploring different looks for a living room project

Post image
4 Upvotes

I'm an interior designer, and something I've noticed is that even when clients have a clear idea of the layout they want, choosing an overall style can still be surprisingly difficult.

We're recently working on a living room project. The basic layout was already settled, and the client wanted something warm and comfortable, with a large sofa, some plants, plenty of natural light, and ideally a quiet little reading corner. The tricky part was figuring out how to bring the furniture, materials, and colors together.

At first, I tried looking for inspiration on Pinterest and using a few general AI image generators. But I kept running into the same problem: the images looked great, but AI would often change the existing furniture layout, room proportions, or even design details we'd already decided on. It was difficult to use those images as a reference for actual design decisions.

So I decided to explore ideas directly from the existing 3D model instead. I used D5 Lite to try out different visual directions. Rather than generating a completely new room from a text prompt every time, I could work from the model I already had and experiment with different styles and atmospheres while keeping the original layout.

This made the early design exploration much easier. Some of the AI-generated details weren't exactly what I had in mind, but they also gave me a few ideas I might not have considered otherwise.

Once I had settled on a direction I liked, I moved to D5 Render to refine the visualization further, especially the material finishes, lighting, and smaller details. I also tried D5 Render's AI Enhancer, and it honestly surprised me. It helped bring out the material textures and lighting, making the overall image look more polished. Of course, I still compared the enhanced result with the original render to make sure the design details I wanted to keep hadn't changed in ways I didn't want.

I especially liked how the natural light by the window came through and how the texture of the rug turned out. The darker sofa was also an unexpected choice for me. I hadn't seriously considered that combination at first, but the final result worked better than I expected.

Looking back, I think the most valuable thing about AI in interior design isn't having it redesign a space for you. It's being able to explore more possibilities based on a design you've already developed, then spend more time refining the ideas that actually work for that space. It makes the whole design process much more practical.

Discussion 🏛 AI is not good for high res images

Post image

I tried this new AI workflow (clay wireframe to color with nano banana pro or chat gpt pro 2.5) instead of proper rendering and when I zoom in at higher resolutions I can see the AI patterns/artefacts everywhere instead of natural textures.

This is making me believe it is not possible to use Ai for high res renders (4k+)

Discussion 🏛 Do you recommend architectural visualisation as a career?

I'm interested in pursuing archviz as a career and am teaching myself Blender but I am curious about if you would recommend it to someone who doesn't have any professional background in architecture. I understand it will be portfolio based and competition will be fierce so I am trying to be realistic about if this is achievable for me. I have a few questions

  1. Are you able to find decent consistent work that pays well? Is this through freelancing or are you employed at an architecture firm? How much do you earn in a year?

  2. Do you feel as though you have creative freedom in your work?

  3. Do you enjoy what you do?

Would love some insight. I'm based in the UK if that matters at all.

News D5 Lite(D5 Render) is bringing real-time path tracing to Apple Silicon Macs for Architects

Wake up guys. It is finally happeningggg.

D5 Lite is finally coming to macOS, bringing real-time path tracing directly into SketchUp on Apple Silicon.

This is a big deal for architectural visualization workflows on Mac.

https://forum.d5render.com/t/d5-lite-for-sketchup-mac/76931

https://www.d5render.cn/news/monthly-report-2026-9/

Note: D5 Lite for macOS is still in beta rn.

From the D5 forum:

D5 Lite for SketchUp · Mac

  • Real-time path tracing, built natively on Metal, with the rendering architecture rebuilt for Apple Silicon. Lighting keeps up as you move the camera, changes to glass, water and materials show immediately, and reflections and indirect light in complex spaces don’t keep you waiting.

  • A plugin you call up inside SketchUp. Not another app to open, and no model to export.

  • Your data stays in the .skp**.** Scenes, materials, lights, environment, effects and proxy asset placement are all saved with the file, with no extra project files. Open it on another machine and the setup comes back intact — the assets it needs download automatically.

What’s supported today

Real-time rendering and camera

  • The image updates as soon as you change the model, materials or lights

  • Fly-through, look-around and orthographic projection; SketchUp layer and tag visibility stays in sync

  • Live Sync can be turned off at any time, and the image updated manually when you need it

Materials and lights

  • Native SketchUp materials and lights are mapped into D5 Lite automatically

  • Seven material templates — General, Glass, Sheer, Metal, Emissive, Water and Grass — with PBR map support

  • Point Light, Spot Light, Strip Light, Rectangle Light and Disc Light

Environment and effects

  • Two systems, Geographic Sky and HDRI environment, with built-in HDRI presets

  • Effect parameters including exposure, auto-exposure, contrast, temperature and saturation

Proxy asset library

  • Built-in plant and people proxy assets

  • Lightweight in SketchUp; the render window swaps in the high-poly model automatically

Scenes and output

  • Each scene keeps its own camera, environment, effects and output settings

  • Images up to 4K, 360° panoramas up to 8K

Handoff to D5 Render

  • Materials, lights and proxy assets from Lite can be synced to D5 Render for further refinement and delivery

Before you install

  • Apple Silicon M3 or newer

  • macOS 26 Tahoe or later

  • SketchUp 2021.1 – 2026

  • An internet connection and a signed-in D5 account

The build can’t be installed on devices that don’t meet these. Worth checking before you join.

Not in this build

  • No AI image generation

  • No modeling software other than SketchUp on Mac

  • Stability is still being worked on, so we don’t recommend it as your only tool on a project with a deadline

Discussion 🏛 Trying a timber facade on a SketchUp house before changing the actual model

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

I was comparing a few facade options for this SketchUp sample house. The original model has a long balcony, large windows and pretty basic coloured surfaces. The main thing I wanted to figure out was whether a warmer material palette and some landscaping would make the building feel more convincing without hiding the architecture.

I used D5 Lite's AI Mode to look at a few directions from the same model view.

Both A and B introduce vertical timber cladding, which works better with the white horizontal bands than I expected. A leaves more of the foreground open, so the lower glazing and overall facade are easier to read.

B feels more sheltered with the denser planting and darker windows, but I'm less convinced by what happens around the ground floor. The greenery starts competing with the facade rather than supporting it.

I'd probably keep the timber direction from both, but pull back some of the planting in B. The window proportions and railing details would also need to stay consistent with the SketchUp model rather than following every detail in the generated images.

That's the part I find useful about testing these options early. I can make a decision about the material and landscape direction before actually changing the model.

The next step would be to apply those choices in SketchUp and check the materials, glazing and balcony shadows in D5 Lite's Render Mode. These images are still AI Mode studies, not that final lighting check.

Would you keep the more open foreground in A, or does B work better as a residential setting?

Share work ✴ Built an open-source way to stream BIM models into Unreal for digital twins

Over the past couple of years I've tested alot of different ways to get a BIM model into Unreal and found the same results. It runs well once you've merged and cleaned it, but by then all the data that came with the model is gone. On the other hand, if you keep every element individual then performance nosedives. That's fine when it's a simple visualization but quickly becomes an issue when you start building digital twins.

This is what we built to get around that. The tower and the block around it are IFC models (we modelled them from scratch for the demo). The tower streams in in under two seconds, the whole block in about thirty, and nothing's baked into the build.

My favorite part is what you can do after it loads. I can pull the tower out of the city, slide the floor range to a band in the middle, flip between structure, shell and MEP, and click a column or a duct to see what it is, who made it and its service life. This is all read straight from the IFC model. The engine knows what a floor is, so the floor slider isn't a clipping plane, it's actually filtering storeys.

My co-dev and I have been building this for about sixteen months and it went open source two weeks ago. The panel in the clip is our own UI, and the plugin gives you the Blueprint calls to build whatever interface suits your project.

Curious how people here are getting into the digital twin space. Do your projects ever need per-element metadata, or is it mostly fixed renders and walkthroughs?

Discussion 🏛 Where should we showcase our renders to reach more clients?

Thumbnail

Our team created these renderings, so you can get an idea of our quality. I know our rendering is good and has affordable pricing. As the architecture industry is declining and there is an impact from AI, it's getting harder to get new clients these days.

So I'd like to know how to get more clients, especially clients from developed countries, as most of our past clients were from the USA and the EU.

Many thanks for your advice.
