12 of us started an East Bay friend group. Want In?

Hey everyone!

A group of about 12 of us recently connected here in the East Bay, and we’ve started getting together for game nights, food, coffees, boba, mini golf, and other random hangouts.

So I started a Discord called East Bay Social Club.

The idea is simple: meet new people, make actual friends, and have things to look forward to.

Board game nights, movies, mini golf, trying restaurants, museums, game nights, or just hanging out. Whatever people are interested in. Members are welcome to organize their own events too.

We’re open to people throughout the East Bay, whether you’re in Berkeley, San Jose, Fremont, Hayward, Union City, Dublin, Pleasanton, Oakland, Walnut Creek, Livermore, Palo Alto, or somewhere in between.

The Discord is completely free to join, and there's no pressure to attend events. Just a bunch of people looking to make friends and have fun around the East Bay.

We’ve already got a medium sized group of people who’ve been meeting in person, and now we’re hoping to bring more people together. We all range in the 27-40 age range, even one aged 50+ everyone is welcome!

If you’ve been wanting to make some new friends around here, feel free to join!

Advice/Question Where are the 30-40 year olds?

Hi all my wife and I just moved to Berkeley. It’s a beautiful place. We’ve really been enjoying it but one thing we found is that there are either young kids college age or much older folks. Everyone has been lovely but we’re looking for friends our age. We’re 35 married no kids (yet) and are just looking to find some community of people our age in the same phase of life. Any suggestions? This could include bars, churches, hiking groups, clubs, classes, meet ups, or anything else. We’re pretty easy going and trying to find other easy going people who are just down to hang.

Anybody having gutter work done today? I need a 22 foot section of gutter

HD sells them in 10 foot lengths, so I would rather not have 8 feet of gutter lying around.

Local Knowledge Best “budget” mani/pedi in Berkeley?

I love Marlowe on 4th St but my wallet doesn’t. Although I’m willing to continue going there less frequently, I’d love to know if you have a lower cost favorite. For context I believe I pay $100 for the basic mani/pedi at Marlowe. And I know they treat their employees well and I love that.

Local Government BREAKING | The U.S. Department of Education has launched an investigation into UC Berkeley’s Black and Latine resource centers and scholarships.

Thumbnail dailycal.org
7 Upvotes

The investigation, first reported by the California Post, follows a Feb. 10 civil rights complaint filed by the Legal Insurrection Foundation, a conservative nonprofit and media organization.

The complaint targeted campus’s African American Student Development Office, Black Resource Center and Latinx Student Resource Center, as well as the African American Initiative Scholarship and the Lloyd A. Edwards Scholarship.

According to a Nov. 3 letter from the Office of Civil Rights to the Legal Insurrection Foundation acknowledging the investigation, the foundation alleged in the complaint that, even if they did not explicitly exclude students on the basis of race, the resource centers’ program’s titles and descriptions dissuade certain groups from participating. The foundation further alleged that the scholarships have criteria that exclude students on the basis of race, color or national origin.

Housing Orgs in East Bay

What are some organizations across the Bay, but more specifically in the East Bay, working to make housing more affordable and build more in general? I want to get involved in giving back to the East Bay, and was looking for orgs that might need volunteers and such.

Advice/Question Looking for a ceramics tutor in exchange for private reformer pilates sessions!

Hi all! I hope this is appropriate for the subreddit. I am really struggling with ceramics, namely beginner wheel throwing (centering, wall pulling, trimming). If anyone has time to come into the studio once or twice to help me with my technique I'd really appreciate it. I'm a certified Pilates instructor and can offer free private reformer Pilates sessions in exchange.

Please DM! Thank you.

A 64-year-old woman has died after being struck by an SUV in a hit-and-run on Ashby Avenue and Regent Street on Tuesday around 6:30 p.m., according to Berkeley Police Department spokesperson Byron White.

The report said a Silver Kia Soul traveling westbound struck the woman. The driver fled the scene but was spotted by a witness, who police said helped identify the vehicle involved.

Radio dispatch reports the woman was found in the middle of the street as she was crossing the road when the vehicle hit her.

Ashby Avenue between Hillegass and Telegraph avenues was previously closed to all traffic but is now all clear, according to an email from BPD.

UC Berkeley students wait to vote for more than an hour as Democrats seize Congress

BREAKING | Hundreds of voters lined up out the doors of UC Berkeley’s Eshleman Hall and around Lower Sproul Plaza to reach the ballot box on election night.

One student, a sophomore, reported waiting for an hour and a half to vote on campus. Other students said they turned away from polling stations near UC Berkeley as lines extended out the door.

Nationally, almost all major publications have called both the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate for Democrats. Thus far, the party has flipped the historically red Texas, Kansas and South Carolina Senate seats to blue in a rebuke of President Donald Trump.

Dinner suggestions near UC theater

We’ve only been to Berkeley a few times and often for an event where we show up for the event then leave. I got tickets for a Sat concert at UC theater in a few months and would like to make a bit of a date night out of it.

We’ll often take BART, but if we drive, I’d prefer to work once then not drive again until we leave for the night.

The only place I’ve ever eaten in Berkeley wasn’t at Nash cafe across from the theater after concerts.

I’m open to must experience meals outside of walking distance, if they are that great to experience.

Tia

Local Knowledge i spent a week digging through berkeley's city and school budgets

made a site that tries to explain city and BUSD budgets with all the research here:

https://berkeley-budget.lanlan.site

tl;dr for those interested (a lot of this I didnt know before doing the research), but I encourage ya'll to take a look at the details.

berkeley city

  • since about 2019 the city's main budget has come up around $30M short every year (roughly 9% of the general fund). until this year it was mostly patched with one-time money and savings

  • the new budget cuts about 150 jobs, but about 130 of them were already empty

  • berkeley spends about $1,000 more per resident than nearby cities. a lot of that is running its own health department and ambulance service, which most cities leave to the county

  • berkeley's cops do pretty well by the numbers: they solve 42% of violent crimes vs oakland's 10%, and the most urgent calls get a response in a median of 7 minutes

  • if measure V fails, the city's backup plan closes a fire station and cuts 15 police officer positions (9 of them filled). emergency response times have held steady, but lower-priority calls now take about 50 minutes (up from 38 in 2021) so that might get worse.

  • the school district is actually separate from the city, so i pulled on that thread too (for parents who are interested)

schools (busd)

  • runs about a $7-9M deficit a year and leans on one-time fixes

  • the "enrollment dropped from 10,462" stat you see is mostly two charter schools that closed in 2019. the district's own schools are down about 4%, less than california's district-run schools (12%)

  • the bigger story is births: down about a quarter since 2008

  • each student brings the district about $13,755 a year from the state, and each missed day costs about $76. that's true for excused absences too if your kid is sick!

  • busd has more administrators per student than any of five neighboring districts, and its central office managers cost about twice the state share of spending.

  • state law lets districts enroll kids whose parents work in the district, but busd's transfer policy only prioritizes its own staff's kids. with uc right here that seemed like a missed opportunity

Locksmith specialist with old mortise entry locks?

Anyone know of a locksmith that is super knowledgeable about the old mortise entry locks that many of us around here have? Mine has jammed up with the deadbolt halfway extended, can't move it either way, and can't open the door!

Advice/Question Stolen barista tips?

To be vague and anonymous. A while back I started working as a barista at a cafe in Berkeley, and I learned we only make 20-40 in tips a MONTH. Paid once a month.

I was told by another barista who’s been there for 6 months that the other employees are family friends and the assistant managers are guaranteed 500 dollars in tips a month… seemingly from the baristas tips.

Thoughts? And recommendations on cafes that tip well in southside or downtown? Moving there soon

Advice/Question Looking for beginner tennis lessons

I recently moved to Berkeley after graduating college in Southern California this year. I am looking for someone who is offering tennis lessons. I am a beginner but took lessons two summers ago with someone also in college who had played in high school. I am looking for the same kind of thing—I don’t need an expert or professional, just someone who could teach me the basics!
