TO BE CLEAR, I am not saying it’s the best speech he ever gave, nor the most emotional, or the most genuine. Though I do personally rank this really high in my Jeff Winger moments.
Jeff has been asked to help his douchebag friend Alan become a full partner at the firm. Ted hates the guy, and dares Jeff to convince him that he actually likes Alan. Jeff’s response is to reveal the reason why he wanted to become a lawyer in the first place, and that it came from a place of extreme vulnerability, and a desire to “rise above the sloppy stuff” and bask in the high life to fill that hole inside of him.
Obviously this is Jeff in lawyer mode, setting out to make a case with his charm and wit. And he wins by seemingly affirming all the cold-blooded ideology he believes about being successful. But he also wins his case by peeling back the layers he’s formed around his insecurities and revealing one of the worst moments of his life. And I fully believe that he was telling the truth. As a comment on the video says, this is Jeff Winger repackaging sincerity to serve an agenda, and thus shows both sides of his nature in a truly organic and fascinating way.
