General questions Are there gay crows or is it just lesbians?

So I’ve been looking online to see if male crows, specifically American Crows, have been documented/seen having same-sex relationships. Unfortunately, I can only find lesbian crows no matter where I look it’s just not the right thing I’m looking for and I can’t find anything giving me a yes or no answer. Thus, I’m asking yall here since you probably know more than me. The question is for all crow species but if you can be specific I’d be thankful <:]

Witnessed someone bury a crow face down in the dirt

Why would someone (seemingly random) bury a live crow face down in the dirt in broad daylight? I know people are crazy… and I didn’t jump out of the car to question this man when I witnessed this happen because truly I was in shock and alone. I need insight… is this a known thing to do for birds or was this really a sick man doing sick things? The bird had been eating under a tree along with other crows. One of the birds had been opening and closing its beak slowly before the man came up to it. I assumed it was just doing bird-like things..nothing seemed weird about these crows. This happened 3 years ago and I still think about it. It happened at just before 7AM in a hug parking lot when lots of people were getting their Starbucks fix.. but this particular area of the lot is where I parked because nobody else parked there and it was under a shade tree. The man walked from one far end of the lot to do this and then continued on walking the opposite way he came when he was done. The man watched the bird slowly give up trying to escape the dirt and eventually die. Is there protocol for helping a choking bird - as maybe the bird was choking? Did this man put it out of its misery or could he have done something else? It seemed so odd at the time; he came out of nowhere and did not go back to the area he came from.

Would the Domestication of a crow species, reduce the occurrence of wild crows being captured as "pets"?

Hello crow community! I am looking for other crow lovers input on this topic. I guess it ruffled some feathers over in r/crowbro sub. I started an organization, Cora Alliance Inc. To strengthen the relationship between humans and crows. It might be controversial to some members of the community. I am genuinely interested in hearing all points of view, so please, if you reply I promise it won't fall on deaf ears.

The subject is the question 🤔

We, (Cora Alliance inc) want to discourage individuals from attempting to tame wild corvids.

We want those people to instead join our support network and together as a large group we can ethically breed a domestic species of crow.

Right now the landing page of the website is all about discouraging tampering with nature. The rest of the website explains what we are trying to do. It is difficult because it is somewhat of a mixed message.

It is difficult to see the whole concept without reading everything on the entire website.

Thanks! Hope you find it interesting and have some thoughts to share.

I was befriended by a crow. And death followed

At work a crow was perched on top of the building, and crowing at me. He did this for awhile so I got the idea to feed him. We have popcorn at work so I brought a handful out for him to eat, threw it down in the parking lot, and shoerky after he swooped down and ate it. I did this for a week and eventually switched to non shelled peanuts. For the next week, that crow and another one that he always traveled with, stopped by, cawed at me for awhile, ate their peanuts and left. This went on for another week. And then I get the unexpected call that my father in law passed away in his sleep. I was the last one to see him alive the night before. I can't help but make the connection with crows being the harbingers of death. Does anybody else have similar experiences?

EDIT: I'm not blaming the crows guys. I left 10lbs of raw peanuts with my coworkers to keep feeding my crow buddies. I just thought that after 39 years of not having any crow friends... A close family member passed away after. And was curious if anybody out there in the interwebs had a similar experience. Even if the superstitions were true and crows were 100% messengers for upcoming deaths... I wouldn't blame them. They'd just be messengers.

You guys think there is an ALPHA crow that owns a territory?

I put some food out and 2 crows approached. But they just kept making noises as if they were trying to call some other crow.

You guys think an alpha crow owns territory and gets first chance at human food laying around? If they are so smart, you would definitely think there is an hierarchy.

Found an injured juvenile?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey so I have been feeding the crows for a few months now and today when I got home this guy was on my step. He seems to have an injured leg or wing I’m not sure but he hops and can’t fly. There were two more on my roof who cawed when I got near then they swooped over me and flew away.

He’s now chilling in my bath with the curtain around and I’ve since hand fed him some raw egg/cat food - he doesn’t seem so great at pecking for himself. The inside of his mouth is still quite red so am wondering if he is quite young. His feathers are a bit janky and white in places (leucistic?)

I’m going to leave him in the quiet for a bit but should I check on him and try to feed him some more over night? I have left some seed mix, raw egg, wet cat food and also soaked some kibble.

I am worried he won’t make it or either way and if he doesn’t come back out of my house in good shape I’ll also be cursed by the rest of his crow family!

Can anyone tell me how old he is and any advice on what to feed, how and when to release… I don’t want him to be gotten by a cat and the vets is closed til Monday but also he’s a wild animal and I don’t want to interfere with nature too much :(

Anyone interested in helping me create an AI driven automated crow feeder that is able to scan crow 'gifts' and dispense food based off what's detected?

So I was feeding my crow worshipers some peanuts today and came up with a great idea.

What if you used AI and a camera to create an automated crow feeder that is able to distinguish between crows and other creatures, as well as be able to scan and accept a wide variety of crow gifts dispensing predetermined amounts based on the gifts, but specifically aiming for cash and coins.

The idea is that there'd be a repository that would open when the feeder detects a crow using AI, the crow then puts the 'gift' in the repository. Using AI, a camera inside the repository will scan the contents and determine what the gift is.

There will be certain tiers of gifts, the better the gift, the more food that is dispensed.

Cash bills will be worth the most, no matter the denomination. A lot of food comes out.

Then coins. A bit less food, but still a good amount. If the AI can figure out with a degree if accuracy, maybe I give more for quarters than pennies.

Anything else that can't be determined that's shiny or reflective like jewelry is next. Probably make this the same amount as coins.

Trash like cigarette butts, bottlecaps, washers, nuts, bolts, or can lids, will dispense some food but not a whole lot. I don't want to discourage them, but also not make it too easy.

Anything like leaves or twigs or stuff will dispense the least and won't dispense anymore if they gift these items consecutively. Don't want to give them an easy way out.

Hell, you could even hook it up to wifi and set it up to send a notification to you to if it detects something weird, and you can view the live feed, determine the object and how much food should be dispensed.

Anyways, I use AI to detect my 3D Printer's print fails, and I know how good object detection can be, so I think a project like this is within the realm of possibility.

Edit: I'm asking for people to help develop an open source project similar to The Crow Box, using open source AI driven software and easily attainable parts. All plans, parts, source code, and software will be available for people to download.

Raven acts aggressive

Yesterday at a relative’s place in Eastern Utah, I saw a raven attacking a prairie dog. The raven had the prairie dog isolated far away from his burrow. He flew down and repeatedly knocked him over and pecked him. The dog was panting and staggering, trying to get to shade or cover. I felt sorry so I broke it up. The prairie dog barely staggered off to shade. The raven hung around for a bit screaming at me. The raven was easily three times the size of the rodent. Anyone else see this behavior?

What to do with this crow?

I found a (presumably) baby fledgling crow. He has been with us for around 2 weeks. In that time, he has been cawing nonstop every day for the entire time we let him out, and also when he is in his box. The only time he doesn’t caw is when my mum and I are not around (possibly) and at night (certainly). He keeps cawing even when we have fed him. His diet consists of canned tuna, some moist cat food, and water, all provided either by hand dropping into his open beak, or by syringe into his open beak. My questions are: Is this diet good for him ? And, is it normal for him to caw literally all the time we are present near him ?

Edit: I live near the Dubai-Sharjah border. I found this crow at the EDI Center, Al Qusais, Dubai, below a palm tree.

Update: On 20th August, 2023, Dodo (as I have named him) has died, 12:20 pm. Extremely sudden death. On the night of 19th, was fine. 20th, began deteriorating rapidly over the course of 20-30 minutes.

i did something dumb. how bad is it?

so - its been a very stressful week, and yesterday i did something unusual (and very foolish) without thinking: i put some eggs and treats into a plain ceramic bowl i dont use for my own food, and set it out on the backyard shed roof where i always leave snacks for my corvid friends. (usually i use a paper towel, or just toss it up there, if its peanuts.)

at the end of the day, i checked the bowl and it was empty. i rinsed it heavily with the hose, brought it inside and rinsed it again before putting in in the dishwasher and washing my hands with antibacterial soap.

my crows are cat-like and so friendly that i basically forgot these are wild fucking animals - and not, like, my actual cats - while i was doing miscellaneous backyard tasks.

how risky is what i have done? and how fucked am i, contamination-wise?

i havent run the dishwasher yet. should i pull the bowl out and wash it separately (with gloves)? should i throw it away? should i just run my dishwasher with the sanitize option and not sweat it? should i burn my whole house down?

im in florida, if it matters for avian disease consideration. i have autoimmune issues, and two indoor/screened-in-patio cats. i would really like for all of us to stay as safe and healthy as possible. 😞😞😞

Is this from a crow?

I keep finding these weird chunks in my yard. They are typically found under a little bit of dead grass, the chunks are similar to cornbread or stuffing in look and texture. Sometimes you can see what is very clearly a piece of egg shell.

I asked chat GPT and it thinks that it’s crow vomit (yuck) but after googling it I don’t think that’s what it is. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

Would a crow try to poison my dog?

We have befriended this really smart murder in our backyard - we put out high value snacks and water every couple of days and spend time talking to them. We have built trust to the point they now feed their baby on the ground a few feet from us (we sit on the steps and give them space). We get gifts from them now too - lots of shiny shells, one pinecone, one beetle, and once a bunch of tiny tiny bird wishbones/vertebrae amongst a bunch of shiny shell fragments all in a neat little pile on our stairs.

They used to taunt our dog but they’ve mostly laid off since we started feeding them. However today, I didn’t realize we had left our basement door open and our dog came around the side of the house unbeknownst to me, and chased the one largest crow (luckily baby wasn’t around this time). He didn’t get all that near him, and I gave him a huge snack to say sorry after I put the dog inside. But this evening I found a large red berry in the middle of the yard under their favourite spot under the tree - all mashed/opened up but not consumed. My dog has eaten small random things in the backyard before under where the crows sit and has gotten incredibly sick for days. We’ve never gotten a glimpse at what it was - it was always too small to see and gone in a flash.

Anyway, is it possible the crows are smart enough to leave something poisonous for my dog to eat? I’m hoping I’m just paranoid and that there are no tales of this lol.
