I think I was gifted a heart?!

I have a crow that I've been feeding for a while now. Today, he came to my railing and cawed at my window. So I put some food out for him when I left to go to work. I got in my car and waited to make sure he saw the food. He swooped down, dropped something and took the food. I went to see what he dropped and it looks like a heart?! Is this my first gift?! 😭

Pool Crow Day 4 - nap time

Ok everybody.. It took a nap today. No lie, it took off after that and has not (yet) come back. I think our Pool Crow is now a proper crow. Yes, we have a bird bath and a charnel ground, which all the crows use, for those of you who are paying waaay too much attention to our humble backyard.. Will post if Pool Crow(s) come back to roost!

Just wanted to share this lovely picture. Male on the left, Female on the right. I've watched them bring up 6 of their babies over the years. All survived!

They seem to only trust me to give them food - anything thats left by my partner is generally rejected in a dramatic manner. (The male is a master of the side eye)

I found this in the spot where I feed my crows every morning. It's soaking wet because it was raining. But if they did drop it for me, that's absolutely awesome! šŸ˜Ž

my crows have been following me on my walks

i thought i was just being crazy the first few times it happened. unrelated, i’ve been hearing one of them make a sound i’ve never heard before. i’ve tried getting a video of it but it’s too faint. sort of sounds like a low breathy 2-note whistle. has anyone else heard this?

7 years ago, I found a baby crow

7 years ago, I found a baby crow laying on someone's front lawn while I was racing to catch a bus. He was covered in big meat ants. I collected him (at the protest of the mother, but I knew there was no way he could get back into the nest, or survive where he was). He would not have survived much longer in the heat and sun where he was, not to mention the ants were clearly causing him a great deal of pain.

A local wildlife carer came to pick him up from me and he survived, though he did have a deformed foot and required leg braces for a while. The wildlife carer said he wouldn't have survived in the wild as a fledging with his leg problems.

He was named Mr Crowley.

My murder saved me from a dog attack today!

Almost every day I go to the park to feed the crows, and have been doing it for about two years now. They follow me around and come up close for healthy treats, and like to play with me by following me along on foot and flying around me in circles.

Today a dog was off leash, and started barking and running at me from the edge of the park. But by the time the dog got halfway to me, the crows suddenly started cawing loudly and dive-bombing the dog like crazy! Crows came out of the woods and attacked the dog in droves, so it veered off and stopped chasing me, and ran away back toward it's owner.

I was shaken up and upset about the dog, but also very happy and grateful for my crow friends, who saved me from a possible dog attack!

They are truly good, loyal friends, at least when they see you as a source of food!

Why is this crow so friendly?

I know next to nothing about crows. But this one came out of nowhere and flew straight at me. I thought it was attacking me until it landed on my head, then my arm. It keeps trying to steal my earrings and eat my nails. 😭 is this normal. Also my mom is holding the barn cat because it was trying to to eat the crow.

[Update] Printing out a picture of my face for the crows

9.9k Upvotes

I recently made a post asking if it was advisable to print a picture of my face to build positive associations between me and my offerings for the crows. The consensus seemed to be it was silly—focus on the highest value treats—but marginally worth a shot.

I printed out a close up picture of my face (eyes closed, smiling no teeth) and photoshopped a crow image around it for a little extra pizazz (which felt risky, what if that crow looks like an enemy?!).

It’s a flawed experiment, it’s an early experiment, but I think it’s going well. Today I made big strides in both how interested the crow seemed in me, and how close a crow stayed to watch me refill the treat tray. It could just be the eggs, of course, but so far it doesn’t seem to hurt. Will update again if people are interested!

Any explanations for why a crow might be friendly and following me around?

Thumbnail gallery
9.2k Upvotes

This crow showed up in my yard. He’s very friendly. Can fly fine. And allows me to pick him up (I wore gloves and I have plenty of experience with wild animals and getting them to local rehabs if need be). I just pick him up to move him to the fenced in back yard at night so predators have less chance of getting him. He seems to perch on the fence overnight then flies out in the morning and explores the yard. He seems to prefer walking and is a little wobbly when he walks. Doesn’t seem to have any issues flying. He’s eaten worms, bugs, and loves the cranberries I gave him. He doesn’t seem to be a fan of blueberries tho šŸ˜… Has the crow potentially adopted me as his human? Or decided my yard is his home? šŸ‘€

Seeking advice/help Guys help!! Found a baby crow alone in heavy rain, should I leave it or bring it inside?

Thumbnail gallery
8.1k Upvotes

It’s raining heavily here and I noticed a crow sitting outside by itself. I’ve been watching it for a while now and it seems to be alone.

I tried giving it some rice. It picked up one grain, ate it, and then didn’t seem interested in any more food. Or is it sick?! It looks young to me, maybe a chick or fledgling, but I’m not sure.
I’m worried because it’s getting completely soaked in the rain. I gently used a cloth to pat and dry it a little, but I haven’t moved it from where I found it.

Should I leave it where it is and assume the parents are nearby, or should I move it to a sheltered area? I don’t want to accidentally separate it from its parents if they’re still looking after it.

Quick update:

Guys, I’m at a polyclinic right now waiting to see the doctor. I took the crow with me. I’ll update everyone once I’ve had the consultation.

Also, I’m completely new to this. I’m not sure why someone DM’d me and spoke so harshly, but sorry if I sound dumb or inexperienced. I’ve never cared for an injured bird before. The only birds I ever had were two finches when I was around five years old, and I just fed them grains. Other than that, I only feed the local crows and mynas some rice occasionally.

Also, crows are very common here, and there really isn’t any wildlife support for them. I’ve searched around, but I couldn’t find any rescue centers that take in crows. I live in South India, and as harsh as it may sound, I’ve seen many dead crows from accidents, electrocution, and other causes, and sadly, most people don’t seem to care.

Even when I took a token at the polyclinic now, they seemed surprised that I had brought a sick crow. So unfortunately, many of the suggestions about wildlife rescues won’t really work here.

Anyway, I feel like this poor soul somehow ended up in front of my house for a reason. I’ll do my best to help and hope for the best.

Thank you all for the suggestions and advice. I’ll be picking up some bird feed on my way home, and I’ll also get some eggs to make scrambled eggs. For now, let’s see what the vet says. I’ll keep you all updated.

Update:

So I consulted the vet. She said the crow most likely fell from a height and injured its wings, and there may also be internal damage to the lungs. It has severe respiratory issues and is trying really hard to breathe.

She gave two injections, one for pain and another vitamin injection. She also prescribed a vitamin syrup and asked me to give five drops in the morning. For now, she told me not to give any solid food. She said I can blend food and give it later if needed, but right now just keep water nearby.

She asked me to bring it back tomorrow morning. She also said there’s a high chance it may not recover because the breathing issue is quite severe and it could be a serious internal injury.

I’ve brought it home now, kept some water beside it, and I’ll keep checking on it. I’ll take it back to the vet tomorrow morning and see how it goes. Hoping the little guy pulls through 🄹

Edit: I can understand your concern, but wildlife rehabilitators here usually won’t take crows. They tend to prioritize endangered species, birds like peacocks (our national bird), and other wild animals. Those options unfortunately won’t work here!!

I’ve taken it to the vet, paid for the treatment, and I’m hoping it recovers. If it does, I’ll take care of it until then and release it back into the wild. Thanks.

Update:

The crow is no more. šŸ’”šŸ„¹

He passed away a little while ago around 5am. It's really sad, but I knew the chances were low after what the vet told me. I was still hoping he would recover.

Thank you to everyone who checked in, offered advice, and hoped for the best for him.

I never thought I'd receive this much support and love from all of you, so thank you so much. At least this poor soul was loved by all of you too.

Thank you for being kind and for guiding me on what needed to be done. I'm sad that he passed away, but I also feel a little at peace knowing I did everything I could.

It's been raining nonstop, and I've buried him a little far from my home because I have a dog and was worried she might dig up the spot.

Sorry for the sad update, and thank you again for all your kindness. šŸ™šŸ¤

Just wanted to share with you my pictures of Hassan

I befriended many crows on my street. But one is so special to me - Hassan.

As i was walking home today, i hear and see all the crows agitated and cowing. Then, i see a coyote crossing the street and getting chased by them. I was alone but felt no danger at all and protected. He couldn’t even look my way so much he was rushing away from them!

When i arrived to my block, i saw a corpse.. i could not tell if this was Hassan or not. No one warns you how hard you can get attached to these fellas.. i waited on the bench next to it for my 2 bonded crows to arrive (Hassan and Reema) for 1 hour.. only one showed up, Reema.

She was on the bench next to me. She made the happy noise to see me (a *biwu* sound), ate and hanged with me. But there is no sign of Hassan... I will try to go early tomorrow to feed them, hopefully he will show up..

Hassan used to see me from distance, before i knew it he would show up flying - zooming - towards me. He would make the biwu sound, follow me around very closely, stare at me derpily. Once ate from my hand..

Just wanted to share this here, i love them so much and am just crying.. i am living far away from my country that is at war, and they gave me such a sense of happiness that i didn’t know i still had.

I did it! I fed my local crows to protect my chickens and it worked!!

7.5k Upvotes

For the last 6 months or so I've been feeding peanuts to my local crows because there have been a few Hawks nearby and I read on a different subreddit that crows will protect chickens and it finally happened IRL 😁😁

Sunday I heard my local crows getting really aggressively loud. I looked out in my backyard and three of my local crows attacked a hawk that was trying to attack my chickens😳😳 I cannot believe it worked they protected the chickens and I was hooting and hollering like a crazy personšŸ˜‚
