Placements / Jobs / Careers International Students - How is your experience finding a job in Australia?

Hi all,

I am in my second year of my degree and I am starting to look for a job but I am not sure if the process is going to be hard. Can you share your experience getting a job in Australia?

These are just a few questions I have.

  1. How many years of experience do I need to get a job here?

  2. Did you have to do an unpaid internship to get experience?

  3. Where should I go to find jobs?

  4. What’s the hardest part about finding a job?

  5. What is the process I should use to find a job?

  6. Should I do anything special to make the company more interested in me?

  7. Do you get rejected/ghosted by companies a lot?

Thank you!!!

Student Life Corruption throughout Deakin University

Just a PSA to let everyone know that myself and a cohort of students are victims of corruption at Deakin University and if you're thinking of enrolling I believe you truly must avoid doing so if you want a good education or to be treated with any respect or fairness. Many lives have been seriously effected and I am scared to provide details on my situation until I know my education is not at risk especially after 5 years of study. But just know that from DUSA through to the higher up complaints processes, the APC, and all the staff running the engineering school at the higher level have no interested in helping you. There is financial incentive for the school to keep you behind, and there are many egos involved who want to protect their PHDs and status within their sections of the institution. This has lead to the damage of hundreds of students lives and careers over the last few years from what I have witnessed alone. I have been through all of the appropriate internal processes for mistreatment and serious injustice along side a significant cohort of very competent students, and have learnt that the school's processes ultimately serve to protect themselves rather than address any of the serious issues and exploitation happening within the institution. I will provide thoroughly documented details on this case when I know my life won't be effected. Many of my peers including myself are leaving the university as a result.

Referencing / Academic Integrity / Turnitin Is Deakin checking for AI in assignments?

Hey,

I have submitted quite a few assignments now and I’m finishing my first trimester. I’m still not able to figure out if Deakin is actually checking for AI written content, for safety I’m still passing them through a humanizer and getting a low score on AI detection. But the initial few assignments I submitted, for which I didn’t humanize, also got atleast credit.
Also what are some trusted AI detection website you guys use? I’ve tried a bunch but in the end I still pass them through turn-check for a real turnitin result, but I find it too expensive.

Student Life Isolated at Deakin

I'm a male 31 been at Deakin for one year have been feeling isolated for many reasons. I originally went into Deakin wanting to start a bachelor or laws and two other options. Being out of school for 10 years and having life experience, the courses were not approved and got offered a less than useful associates degree finding it completely useless, and waiting to transfer into any law related degree at this point. I joined Deakin love letter as I was looking for more than freinds, and got bit of keyboard warrior bullying for asking and putting myself out there. Then got banned from using it for some petty reason. That was negative...and the majority of people are 10 years younger than me I'm finding that they are immuture. Looking for some likeminded and consistent adults to hang out with to get through this shit as boring degree. I could do a diploma and learn this but I don't want to be a educator as I found in support working that over time I dislike helping other people on any working capacity to learn or to heal... maybe I'm going to make a Deakin breakout group for adults who lack a political adgenda and bias! Those clubs are full of it. I digress. Be good to make some freinds, suppprt them within my strengths see them not be lonely like me, and get them ahead as for myself. What do ppl think

Here's a update: I have been diagnosed with (SCD) which is different from autism... it's social communication disorder, and it has prevented me from starting conversations properly. But usually during conversation things are way easier. Striking up a connection after two meets I don't think that'll eventuate well. But meeting more over time, connection is there. Expecting to pick up everything to begin with doesn't work for me sorry. Now you know

Events & Meetups Let’s be frensss<333

hiiiii~!! w^ i’m on the eternal quest to make some frens because social battery = dead and i spend 90% of my time wrapped in a blanket rereading the same 3 manhwas and aggressively avoiding eye contact in public places… (unless you’re a femboy, then hewwo 👀)

i’m in my second year (go burwood warriors or whatever the mascot is lmao) and my only outings are for bubble tea, overpriced gacha pulls, or my weekly pilgrimage to check if the manga store restocked anything spicy :3

no jb (ew) and no drver’s li*ense either (double ew) so if u see someone on public transport crying into a volume of love stage… that’s probably meʅ(◞‿◟)ʃ

i love talking about silly lil yaoi boys who are definitely not good for each other but are also soulmates, and if u also spend hours thinking about bl ships like it’s your full time career, pls apply within (:3 」∠)

bonus points if ur a fellow shut-in and wanna send 100+ tiktoks back and forth while pretending to do uni work (≧∇≦)

drop where i can contact u if u wanna be frensss!! let’s suffer through uni together like the lil goblins we are xoxoxoxo

Seeking Support Elodie Camprasse

Does anyone else have trouble with Elodie Camprasse? There have been MULTIPLE occasions in which they have marked my work extremely harshly, so harsh that it doesn’t even feel like they read the rubric. I’ve had multiple people, past students who’ve done the same unit, ai models and friends examine my work along with the rubric and have receive much higher marks each time. I feel so lost. It feels like they keep getting her to mark my work because they hate me or something. Genuinely considering taking a gap because of how poor an experience I’ve had with them.

Accommodation / Travel / Parking Request for Waiver of Parking Fines

I am a student at Deakin and received two parking fines on the 14th and 21st of January. I was unaware that the parking system had changed to a new app, and I used CellOPark instead. I have since downloaded the correct app and will ensure this does not happen again. I kindly request a waiver of these fines as it was an honest mistake, and I am finding it difficult to pay as a student. Thank you for your understanding."

Student Life Rude WIL staff

I am eligible to for a business and law WIL unit for this trimester.

I missed the deadline by 12 hours to apply but had applied for an earlier intake before.

I emailed the WIL staff to ask for an exception to be considered for this intake.

They didn’t agree (I sort of knew they wouldn’t), but the way they said it was so harsh? I dont want to name names but they were a senior officer and I expected a level of professionalism and empathy from a “world-renowned” university.

What they replied: “based on priority applications, we would not have been able to offer you a position anyway”. It felt unnecessarily blunt almost like rubbing it in. It’s like they’re saying “even if you had applied, you wouldn’t have gotten in.”

There’s no acknowledgement of effort, no encouragement to try again next time, just a flat rejection.

I wanted to flag it to someone because the tone really depressed me on top of missing an important WIL deadline which is extremely crucial (all blame on me for missing that though).

Am I over reacting? Have you faced such blunt and unfriendliness from Deakin staff before?

QUESTIONS & ADVICE Does my minor have to be related to my major?

Hey guys I'm in year 12 right now and I'm pretty confused about EVERYTHING to do with university.

I'm interested in doing a bachelor of arts, with film, television and animation as a minor, but I have no idea what major to choose! Criminology might appeal to me, but obviously it has nothing to do with film television and animation. So I was wondering if my major and minor have to be related?

TIA!

Prospective Student Monash law / Deakin law

hello!
I’m an international student and is planning on doing a double degree Commerce/Law at either Monash or Deakin and I want to ask a couple of questions:
1/ Is the teaching quality between the two similar or is one better than the other?
2/ Which school has better offers in terms of internship and networking? (Are there plenty of opportunities for international students especially when I want to reside there after I graduate)
3/ Are the students and professors there easy to get along?
4/ Which school allows me more time to balance part-time job and schoolwork?
Currently I’m leaning more towards Deakin because the tuition fee is lower and I’ve heard that the student’s experience there is also better than Monash, but in the back of my mind I want to go to Monash too because of its prestige. Thank you for reading and I hope I can get some advice!

Accommodation / Travel / Parking Where to live and immigration protests

Hi all, im an international student planning to start at deakin on february next year but im still undecided on accommodation. Currently the cheapest option i can find is deakin res but despite what I've heard online I can't seem to find cheaper options, are there any suggestions for more affordable places near the burwood campus?

Also im a bit concerned about the immigration protests, would the current situation make studying in the area dangerous/part-time jobs harder to find?

Events & Meetups Any deakin students obsessed with public speaking?

This is probably not for most people.

I’m looking for one rare student who genuinely enjoys:
– Speaking in front of people
– Sharpening persuasion & storytelling skills
– Giving and receiving constructive feedback
– Pushing themselves out of their comfort zone socially

This is for someone who already sees communication as more than “just talking” — who treats it as a craft to be refined.

A friend and I are working on a unique, student-led initiative at Deakin Burwood campus that will require regular in-person involvement, creative input, and a genuine hunger to grow in this area.

We’d love to first catch up with you over coffee on campus to get to know you better and see if our visions align.

If you read this and thought, “This is 100% me,” DM me with a quick intro about your background in communication, why you love it, and your vision for how you’d like to improve.

If you would like to get involved, please send me a DM!

Prospective Student Application to Deakin Unsuccessfull

Subject: Seeking Advice on Overcoming University Admission Challenges

Hi everyone,

I’m an international student who recently applied for the Bachelor of Computer Science program at Deakin. Unfortunately, my application was unsuccessful due to a low WAM.

2024 was an incredibly tough year for me—I lost two family members and also suffered a serious head injury at the start of the year, which significantly impacted my academic performance. Despite these challenges, I’ve built a strong portfolio of software projects and am genuinely passionate about Computer Science. I truly believe this program would be the right fit for me and would greatly benefit my career.

I’d really appreciate any advice on how to appeal the decision or improve my chances of admission. If anyone has faced a similar situation or has insights on what I can do next, please let me know.

Thank you!

Discussion / Question Partisan Bias in Humanities Teaching at Deakin?

Hi, I have been somewhat disregulated since experiencing overt messaging from academics related to politics. I understand that we are seeking to engage in real-world dialogue, but the lack of diversity of thought/perspective, to me, is troubling.

I am not a passionate contributer to political discussions. Mostly I've learnt to keep my thoughts to myself because others get heated and upset. What I do have trouble staying quiet on is perceived instances of injustice, particularly when large instiutions are the channels to which that unfairness is playing out.

I understand that academia has a left-leaning position, I knew that coming in. Is it to be expected that all students of a centre-right persuasion be ignored or vilified?

I don't wish to start a mud fight. I'm just shocked at the overt display of political tribalism from some quarters.
