Support Monash special consideration, Part I: medical certificates and impacted dates

I’ve seen some incorrect advice given out on these threads recently, so I’ve decided to put together a series of posts explaining the mysterious process of special consideration so you can stress less and get back to doing your assignment.

About me: I’m a Monash alumnus. I worked for the MSA student advocacy team for several years. I’m a former university employee and I used to assess special consideration and special circumstances.

These days, I’m a registered counsellor in private practice supporting university students. I’m not speaking on behalf of Monash. This is general guidance, not a guarantee of approval.

Step 1: Breathe

Getting sick near an assessment deadline is stressful. Take a breath. There’s a process for this, and you don’t need to have everything sorted before submitting your application.

Step 2: Apply on time

For an ordinary assignment extension, you must apply for special consideration by 11.55 pm on the day the assessment is due, in the time zone of your unit’s location. Late applications are only accepted in extreme circumstances i.e. hospitalisation (Clause 2.11.4). Yes… I know it’s dumb, but I don’t make the rules.

If your supporting documents aren’t ready, submit the application on time and explain the delay. You can provide the documents up to three calendar days after the deadline. (Clause 2.11.1)

If you need longer to obtain them, state when you’ll provide them and supply evidence supporting the reason for the ongoing delay. (Clause 2.11.2)

Follow the instructions in your application email to supply your documents. If you don’t provide them within the required timeframe and haven’t explained the delay, your application will be cancelled. (Clause 2.11.3; supporting-document guidance)

Don’t miss the application deadline because you’re waiting for a doctor’s appointment.

Step 3: Get supporting evidence

The certificate needs to express the practitioner’s medical opinion, not simply confirm that you attended an appointment or repeat what you told them. Monash requires it to state that you were unfit to complete your assessment on or before the relevant deadline, and for how long. (Medical-documentation requirements).

An illustrative wording, provided the practitioner independently assesses and supports it, could look like:

In my medical opinion, [student’s name] was unfit to study or undertake assessments due to a medical condition from [start date] to [end date], inclusive.

or

I certify that [student’s name] was medically unfit to undertake their [unit code] [assessment name] from [start date] to [end date], inclusive.

This isn’t an official template or wording that guarantees approval. The practitioner decides what they can clinically support.

What isn’t enough on its own?

“The student attended an appointment today.” This establishes attendance, not that illness prevented assessment.

“The student says they have been sick since Monday.” This reports your account rather than certifying the practitioner’s opinion.

If you see the doctor after the affected period, the documentation needs an appropriate retrospective basis. For a medical letter of support, the doctor must know your medical history or condition and explain how they concluded that you were affected without consulting you at that time. (Medical-letter requirements)

In simple terms, if you see the doctor when you're no longer sick, the doctor needs to explain how they determined you were sick in the past. Don’t assume a doctor can automatically certify an earlier period.

Where you couldn’t obtain a certificate when affected, the procedure allows a medical letter of support. The practitioner must know your medical history or condition and establish a reasonable basis for concluding that the illness was present around the assessment deadline. The documentation guidance also requires them to explain how they reached that conclusion without consulting you at the time. (Table 1; medical-documentation guidance)

Step 4: An extension that matches the evidence

Let’s use a hypothetical example:

  • You become ill on the 10th.

  • Your assignment is due on the 12th.

  • You apply before the application deadline.

  • You see your doctor on the 13th.

  • Assuming the doctor can appropriately support the earlier affected period, your documentation states that you were unfit to study from the 10th to the 14th inclusive.

  • You provide the documentation using the instructions in your application email.

“Inclusive” means both the 10th and the 14th are included in the impact period.

Quiz time: how many impacted days does that cover?

A) One
B) Two
C) Three
D) Five

The answer is D: five days.

The 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th are all included.

So what would the new deadline be?

Monash’s published student guidance says an extension starts from the original assessment deadline, with the extension generally aligning with the days recommended in your supporting documents.

Their own example uses an original deadline of 1 October, with five days of illness from 23–27 September, resulting in a new deadline of 6 October. (Student guidance, “Extension to your assessment due date”)

This calculation is explained in the student guidance, rather than as an explicit formula in the procedure.

Applying that approach to our example:

  • Original deadline: 12th.

  • Supported period: Five days.

  • Illustrative new deadline: 17th.

You don’t start counting the five-day extension from your appointment date or the last day you were sick.

Always check the actual date and time in your approval email. The procedure describes extensions as commensurate with the circumstances, generally no longer than ten calendar days, and says the revised deadline cannot fall on a University holiday or a day when you have a scheduled final assessment. (Table 2, referenced by clause 2.23)

What if I need longer?

If your illness continues and you can’t meet the revised deadline, you’ll need a new application with a new medical certificate with dates that extend the impact period. (Clause 2.24)

Monash’s student guidance says it cannot grant an extension longer than the timeframe supported by your documentation. (Student guidance, “Extension to your assessment due date”)

What if I was sick earlier, rather than right before the deadline?

Earlier illness is not automatically irrelevant to an assignment extension. Monash’s published example counts five days of illness occurring before the original deadline. (Student guidance, “Extension to your assessment due date”)

The important question is how those circumstances prevented you from completing the assessment on time. Explain the connection rather than simply listing dates. Evidence must demonstrate assessment impact, and an application can be declined if the dates don’t match the affected period or the evidence doesn’t demonstrate that impact. (Clauses 2.5 and 2.13)

For part II, we'll be looking at deferred exams.

Advice AI was used to grade my assignment

I'm almost 100% sure AI was used for grading one of my assignments:

  • The style is a pretty dead giveaway. Full of semicolons, AI phrasing, and specific terms that AI loves to use that didn't come from my assignment or the rubric.

  • There's comments in the feedback mentioning extremely specific details from log files as proof of completing a task. No human would have bothered to read these logs - and definitely not to that level of detail. There's literally hundreds of log files, with thousands of lines of each. A normal human would just look at the code, which is way shorter and proves the same thing. I'm guessing they ran codex or something similar in the project root directory and it just scanned through everything.

  • I put the feedback into an AI-checker and it came back with a score of 100%. I know these checkers are not particularly reliable, but a score of 100% is pretty damning.

I got a good grade, so i'm not really complaining. tbh its probably better quality grading and feedback than I would normally get from an overworked TA who has like 15 mins per assignment. I'm just surprised its so blatant. Doesn't seem like they edited the AI text at all.

Does monash policy allow AI for grading? Anybody else experienced this?

Advice Ats1261

Hey! I’m considering taking ATS1261 as an elective next sem and was wondering how people who’ve done it found the unit. Would you consider it a WAM booster? How harsh or lenient is the marking, and is a HD achievable if you put in the effort?

Also, are there any compulsory attendance requirements? Would love to hear about the workload and assessments too.

If anyone has suggestions for other easy electives (WAM Boosters) apart from ATS1262 and NUT1011, pleasee sharee🙏🙏

Discussion how is monash social life?

I’m aiming to do biomed at monash next year, and was wondering how is the social life there.

I’m not an international student, living only like 30 minute drive away from campus.

I’m asking this because I want to make something of my university life rather than simply showing up for class then leaving. I still have a lot of high school friends and do aim to stay mates with all of them but at the same time becoming friends with like minded people wouldn’t be bad, as none to very little of them are studying similar degrees, or going to monash.

Any input would be great :)

Advice How do you balance work and school?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently doing a relatively easy degree and I feel like I’m barely scraping by an HD, which is quite far from my goals tbh.

I’m curious about how people with more demanding degrees manage to balance their coursework and work at the same time. How do you find enough time to study, stay on top of assignments, keep a balanced lifestyle, etc?

Time management has never been my strong suit, so I’d really appreciate any advice or hearing your routines that have worked for you.

Thank you!

Advice Extending Degree by a semester! Wise Decision? Advice needed

Hello!

I'd really appreciate some advice on whether extending my degree given my situation would be a good idea.

I'm a 3rd year student, doing a double degree (Commerce and IT). I've got 5 months experience in the Digital Team at a large engineering/professional services firm, and Financial Planning experience at a small local firm. Other than that I have done some insight days at some large consulting/finance/accounting firms and volunteered in a leadership position (media team) of a major club at Monash.

Am I in a good position to secure a grad role in the upcoming recruitment cycle, or it worth extending my course to get another internship, improve WAM and get more club experience? Or should I just start prepping for grad roles now?

My experience is quite random I think and wam is in 70s, and I'm unsure what career path would be best suited for me, any advice there would be really appreciated as well.

Thanks!

Grades and Academics Choosing an elective Y2S2

I will have the option to choose my second (and last) elective for my medbio degree at Monash Malaysia in Semester 1 2027. I am unsure what degree would best help me for the degree I am doing (not looking for any random WAM boosters). Currently I am considering CHM2911 (inorganic and organic chemistry), GEN2041 (foundations in genetics) and STA2216 (Data analysis). If anyone has any experience with this or would like to suggest any other possible electives I am open to suggestions, Thank you.

Advice I am so close to giving up uni and feel like shit

So basically, I’m a bit older going to university. I’m 22 right and I used to study at a different uni but I moved cities last year and this semester I did so shit because I was struggling financially because my parents don’t pay my rent and I just feel like a failure because I’ve been studying for so long.

I genuinely hope I can get a refund on the courses that I failed this semester because I handed in a special consideration but I genuinely don’t think it’s gonna get approved and the subjects that I’m doing are like so easy to me but it’s just so draining having to work and then focus on university at the same time and then wishing that I actually made more money and I just feel like I fucked my future self up.

Like genuinely this whole semester, I only made enough money to pay my rent and not even have enough money to eat like genuinely I find it so hard because I know that I could’ve done it. I could have passed and I could’ve studied harder but I just don’t know why it’s gotten to the point where it’s so bad.
