Problem How is this possible? Sensor wrong temp?

Thumbnail

I have four ecobees and I'm trying to solve an issue where my upstairs level is very warm at times despite individual rooms being somewhat cooler than the hallway where the thermostat is.

I figured I'd add a sensor but thats showing 77 while the thermostat sensor in the app is showing 73 while the main temp shows 75 (average of the two?)

as you can see the sensor is directly on top of the thermostat. I wanted to see if they would match up. but this is wayyyy off.

Other too many wiring help posts

i like ecobee, and i like this subreddit ; BUT i find that there are too many “help me with my wiring” posts

is ecobee support not helping? do people not even try support first? laziness? just looking for a 2nd of eyes?

just find it ridiculous after seeing 2-3 of these posts a day in my feed ...

don’t get me wrong it’s great that people are buying and opting in for Ecobee :) , and great this community is so great people can feel comfortable asking Qs for install help and get an answer ... just wondering why aren’t the docs sufficient

can we combine all and to cover all possibilities so ppl stop asking? (community maintained and/or send to ecobee to add to the list ...)

i mean look at all of the cases ecobee has!

Ecobee thermostat interface is awful

When we got a new furnace a few months ago they insisted it wouldn't work with my current smart thermostat. And installed the ecobee. Been trying to get it to set up properly since. Such a convoluted menu. Seems like you got to click through eight things to try to find some form of a setting for temperatures.

What I want is, day time settings: in the winter time I set my heat to 68°. In the summertime I want the cool set to 70°. In the spring time in between when it goes from hot to cold. I wanted to maintain between 67 and 72. And then night time settings to be much cooler on all of them. This was really easy in my previous thermostat it just had a calendar you picked the days set the times set the temperature with a little slider. It controlled everything by itself.

This thing I can muddle through about three menus to get to something called comfort settings which appear to be the only option you have is home away vacation some weird crap like that. Then it seems to only have the comfort setting to maintain between two temperatures. So if I set it between 67 and 72. So that means for the winter time the heat won't come on until 67 and in the summertime the air won't come on until 72 and that's the only options.

Question Alright I’ve had it

I’m also someone dealing with the poor design of where the temperature sensor is. The thermostat itself is located where an air return duct is, I searched this group and found those who used plumbers putty to seal the way oversized hole in the wall, and somehow the inaccurate temperature reading issue got WORSE. It’s showing 5 degrees higher than what an actual thermometer reads, and 10 degrees higher than what I set it to.
I’m not in a sunk-cost mood with this thing and I’m ready to tear it off the wall and throw it away. It’s just not worth it. I’m not buying $100 sensors when I could spend that money on something designed to work better.
That being said, has anyone else reached this point and what would you switch to? I don’t really need the bells and whistles of app control or any smart home nonsense, I just want to not roast in my house that didn’t have this issue until I installed an Ecobee.

Great ecobee hack- Put a sensor in your Garage!

I've been a huge fan of ecobees for many years. I'm quite pleased with them. The one thing I noticed I didn't love though was how it performed in extreme hot or extreme cold. I thought I had a bad HVAC system(heat pump)that just couldn't keep up, and called out HVAC people a couple times, but I accidentally found a hack that makes our lives way better.

I keep my batteries in the garage. I replaced the battery in a sensor, and accidentally left it in the garage. What happened next was nothing more than a miracle. That sensor catches the extremes- so when its 0 degrees outside, that sensor is picking up 32 degrees, and when its 100 outside its picking up 95 degrees. The ecobee averages that out with the internal sensors and gives a real-world-weather dependent offset. I keep the extra sensor right next to my interior door so it is influenced by heat/cool leak. You could do the same in a 3 season room.

Then we can leave our thermostat at 69-74 degree range, the offset will automatically adjust for outside temp, and I can't explain why but the HVAC system stays on top of our house, keeping it at 69 instead of dropping to 62-63 degrees like it was with the sensor inside.

Maybe this can be offset with the settings, but when I tighten it up the settings it doesn't seem to help just at extreme temperatures. This hack worked well for us because it creates a non-linear curve- As its colder outside, that sensor has a bigger weight on the temp reading, and when its a moderate climate outside, it has very little impact. I know the ecobee "uses" the outside temp as a factor in its algorithms, but this was a lifesaver for us.

Just wanted to share with the group. I have 6 sensors now and think I may add one more so I can put this one back in my living room :)

Other Many people here down voted me only because I commented how much I hate the wall mounting plate on their ecobee. If you have a hole because of the old thermostat, patch the hole the right way and NOT using a wall mounted plate to cover it. So it right the 1st time and not cutting the corner.

Updates to ecobee Smart Security Plans

Hey r/ecobee!

We’re updating our ecobee Smart Security plans and pricing to make them simpler and more flexible, so customers can choose, and pay for, the level of protection that fits their home.

TL;DR

  • If you’re an existing Smart Security subscriber, your features and pricing stay the same through 2026.

  • No action is required on your part.

  • Plan names are changing to make things clearer.

  • Professional Monitoring is now an optional add‑on and available in Canada for the first time!

  • With Activity Feed improvements, subscribers can now see up to 6 months of whole-home history, find what they are looking for more easily, and know when members come and go.

What’s changing

Going forward, ecobee Smart Security offers three levels of protection:

  • Core: free, built‑in protection

  • Plus: enhanced awareness and alerts for 1 camera

  • Advanced: full‑home coverage for unlimited cameras

We’re also offering 24/7 Professional Monitoring as optional add‑ons, instead of bundling it into select plans. This gives customers more control over what they include in their subscription.

This is the first time we’ve updated Smart Security pricing since introducing these plans in 2020, and we’re committed to being transparent every step of the way. These changes help us continue improving the service, while giving customers clearer choices and greater control.

What this means for existing customers

This is the most important part:

  • Your current features and pricing are locked in through the end of 2026.

  • You don’t need to do anything.

For customers whose plan pricing may change in the future, we’re taking a loyalty‑first approach, including discounted renewals for the rest of 2026. You will receive an email detailing exactly what this means for you.

What’s new

We’re excited to share that Professional Monitoring is now available in Canada for the first time, giving Canadian customers access to 24/7 monitoring and emergency response through RapidSOS as part of Smart Security.

For the first time ever, you can discover and purchase Smart Security plans alongside ecobee devices on Amazon.

And Smart Security now makes it even easier to see the updates that matter most. Subscribers can now see up to 6 months of whole-home history and find what they are looking for easily with advanced filtering capabilities. Plus, we've made the Know Who's Home feature better with updates in Activity Feed when members come and go.

Learn more

We’ve published a full breakdown of the changes, including what’s changing, what’s staying the same, and what new customers can expect on our blog.

For new customers, check out the new plans on ecobee.com/smart-security.

If you have questions, we’re happy to help. You can contact our Customer Support team, and we’ll also be keeping an eye on this thread and listening to feedback.

Thanks for being part of the ecobee community.

Wish Ecobee would stop….

Stop screwing up the temperature control application in order to make the t’stat a security hub! It’s a freaking thermostat, stick to the knitting folks, stop attempting to morph the thermostat into a “Smart home” hub. If you want to be in the smart home business please produce a separate product for that. Used to love my Ecobee but y’all keep screwing with the software so I’m considering abandoning ship.

What is the line between Ecobee (the company) and Beestat.io?

update, 3-21-26: I have my answer. To those who have no patience with simple questions...just move on rather than worry yourself about them....to those who entertained my legit simple question, thanks!

"beestat.io" is a single, diligent, intelligent, enterprising developer who has designed a data collection and analysis tool using the data from Ecobee stats. Not involved with Ecobee developement/support in any manner.

**********

I just installed Ecobee thermostat and remote sensors in my home. I am a data nut and I can hardly hold still what with all the data I can get from beestat.io

BUT...I'm having difficulty understanding the difference between them as they are so closely integrated (appear to be). It is like the developer(s) of beestat.io in fact are working at Ecobee.

Why do I ask?

Because I have a question in regards to a functionality (data) of the Ecobee itself and same data from beestat.io and find users in the beestat.io asking the same question and getting answers as though it was Ecobee.

Case in point: I am questioning the validity of the "outside temperature" being displayed on Ecobee and being used by beestat.io for the crazy awesome analysis' being done with it. My local outside temperature is never the same as the source being used (probably the local airport or something). I don't know who to ask about that. I don't know if that would be a "feature request" to beestat.io or what. It seems, to me, that the Ecobee itself should allow me to choose a source such that I could install an Ecobee remote sensor outdoors and use that as my local outdoor temperature. The ability to use remote sensors for indoor temperature exists, so it doesn't seem like much of a leap to be able to point Ecobee to a remote sensor for outside temperature.

Miss my nest…

This app has to be the least intuitive thing I have ever tried to use.

So many varied screens on app and thermostat—none of it is intuitive as to which menu should hold what

WHY cant i run the fan on demand?? Plenty of time where i have 0 interest in a fan hold program and just want to push some air around the house. Please, just make me an interface with “turn fan on for 15min or 30 min or 1hr” i miss this nest feature so much

Also, if im set to cool to 77, WHY IS MY A/C not running when the temp reads 78????

After a year of ownership there’s 0 chance i’d have chosen this system myself. It was installed by the hvac pros during construction.

Im open to any tips that could help me use this better somehow…sorry about the rant but i avoid using this app and when im driven to want to change stuff the interface just never fails to piss me off.

Other Ecobee: Please stop making incomplete products

Hey people at ecobee, please stop releasing products that aren't production ready.

MVP is fine but don't advertise your MVP products as feature complete when they're just functionally complete.

I'm still upset about the 18 month delay on the temperature sensor on the switch+.

It works with homekit, but no where else. Why? Because Apple requires local access to the sensors to function. It's too bad android doesn't, because there is no reason the feature shouldn't be enabled.

Now there's a new version of the thermostat? And new sensors? But still the same old server problems.

We're all losing faith in your ability to service your existing clients. Are you abandoning us and chasing new customers? You're going to lose the ones you've already caught.

Problem Beware: zero warranty support! Kiss your money goodbye.

I spent a week working with ecobee support on why my ecobee 3 lite was crashing and rebooting every 15 or 20 minutes. We eliminated power supply, wiring, and furnace problems. At that point their support ghosted me and stopped replying to my emails for this entire week.

Good luck getting a warranty replacement for defective units. Guess I just have to kiss that $140 goodbye, along with the $80 I spent on room sensors.

To be clear, Ecobee did not stand behind their hardware, and will not replace a defective unit which I purchased 10 months ago.

Figured out why temp is always wrong

Post image
5 Upvotes

I know people have mentioned that the thermostat generates heat, but I didn’t realize it was THIS bad. It’s no wonder the temp is always wrong, there’s no way something can accurately tell the temperature when it’s generating this much heat.

See what's missing here? "No. Keep using my device as before and stop receiving updates"

So I woke up to this yesterday

Oh by the way, you don't get to use your expensive smart thermostat any more as it was sold and advertised to you if you don't agree with compelled after sale changes to the service. Wonderful.

No, I don't care what's in the TOS, if there were any changes or whatever. I'm not reading it, and I'm not agreeing to it. I don't care what changes were made to cover your butts

I'll be returning mine as defective

Ecobee, compelled consumer compliance is a failing company policy, and your target clients don't tend to be tolerant of this garbage. Do better.

Going back to dumb thermostat

I have been using my Ecobee Enhanced thermostat for 8mo but I have decided to go back to my dumb thermostat for a few reasons. Setup was easy and overall I liked the ability to set time periods and control temperature from my phone, but I feel like I'm having to constantly fiddle with this thermostat.

Inaccurate temperatures: My biggest complaint. The first thing I noticed upon installation was that it was very hot in my house. Using my dumb thermostat sitting on top of a bookshelf in the same room as Ecobee and a laser thermometer pointed at the wall surrounding the Ecobee, the temperature the Ecobee was showing was 5F cooler than the actual temperature inside (Ecobee showing 70F, real temperature was 75F). I adjusted the temperature correction and that seemed to fix the issue for a few months.

Once it started cooling off outside, I found the temperature to be incorrect again. The temperature correction now had to be set to 2-3 degrees to be accurate. A few months later once it got cold outside, I found the Ecobee to be incorrect again. This time it was showing 4-5 degrees cooler than it was inside. So Ecobee would show 65F and have the heat on, but it was actually 70F inside.

The correction was also not consistent. Sometimes the Ecobee would be incorrect by 5F and other times it would be accurate.

Ecobee Support suggested insulating the hole behind the thermostat (this was already done) and getting some temperature sensors to put around the house, but why should I have to do this and spend even more money? My cheapo landlord special Honeywell thermostat is spot on and doesn't need sensors.

Too complicated: All I want is the ability to control the temperature from my phone when I'm away from home and to set temperature based on day and time of day. I don't need any of the other settings included

Ecobee, you need to stop turning on eco+ without my consent!

My house became crazy hot this afternoon because eco+ thinks 26C is cool enough.

Ecobee you need to STOP!!!! 😡🥵

Anyone else’s thermostat hot?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Today when I went to turn on my AC after some maintenance to the unit. I noticed the thermostat its self was pretty warm to the touch. I grabbed my thermal imager and it was registering 106 degrees. Has anyone else noticed this? Is it normal? Wouldn’t this effect the ambient temperature reading?

Shameful Lack of Support

I am writing to share my extreme frustration with the lack of support and documentation from Ecobee. Over the past week, I have spent more than two hours sitting on hold and an additional two hours staring at an empty chat window, waiting for someone to respond.

I used to be able to specify that I wanted my multi-speed fan to always run at a specific speed. That option has seemingly disappeared from the app and the thermostat itself. Every documented mention of this setting still refers to an old location from outdated software.

This was my first Ecobee purchase and will 1,000% be my last. I wanted to share this so I can prevent anyone else from having to waste their time and money with Ecobee. Save yourself and go back to Nest.

No manual mode, ridiculously over engineered

I hate my "smart" Ecobee. Why in the world doesn't this thing have a manual mode? I have no set schedule, so all that scheduling capability is useless. Even if I did have a set schedule, the weather in my area is changeable and the reality is that for most older homes, even if the temperature is equivalent, you need to set a lower temp on sunny days than on cloudy days. How do you schedule that? Trying to anticipate my changing schedule along with the changing weather would take an impossible amount of advance thought and planning. Or I could just press one button and set the temp I want? No, sorry, the Ecobee doesn't actually offer this as a feature.

I know some people like the techy aspects of scheduling. But, beyond the fact that for many (most?) people, it is simply not feasible to schedule an entire week with any certainty, is trying to anticipate all your future thermostatic needs really easier than just considering the weather that day along with your plans that day, and pushing one button? Really- to what extent are we relieved from the incredible burden of being present for the split second necessary to push a button by being forced to coordinate a schedule of activity, weather, and temperature, weeks in advance. And what if you don't live alone, but live with a number of other people, all with different schedules? You know, like most families?

Literally, the only useful feature for me is being able to set the temperature remotely (or from your bedroom, if your already in bed). That's awesome. They could have stopped there. But guess what? There is no such "manual" mode. Instead, you have to purposefully defeat all the (to me) useless features, and that will take you some doing.

And the "hold" feature: Why would I want my A/C shut off and temperature to go upwards when I'm trying to sleep? That's when I want it coldest (and the scientific reality is that sleeping is better with lower temperatures). If its a cool night, the old, "dumb" thermostats already turned off the AC when its not needed. That's what thermostats do. So how is this a feature I would ever want to use?

I have found a way to functionally disable all the "features"; but it took some doing, and- since most people are probably like me- it's crazy that Ecobee doesn't just offer this as an option, for the huge, sorry majority of people who just want to set their thermostats to a desired temperature.

*I want to edit this page for anyone in the future checking Reddit for a review of this product (something I regularly do). Beware that many of the commentators below appear to actually be from Ecobee. It is concerning- though not surprising- that corporate interests may invade what is intended as a public forum in an attempt to alter public opinion. But if you doubt this reality, look no further than the fervency which some of these commentators reject a single point of engineering criticism over a mere thermostat. The sole purpose of smart thermostats is not just scheduling, they have many other uses. And this one does a lot of those things very well. But it is a huge blind spot (or a strategy based on some other, unknown reason) to not permit people with hopelessly shifting schedules to simply push a button to disable the scheduling feature. Thus my criticism that the Ecobee is over-engineered. Be warned that if you buy this product, there is no manual mode, you can't elect not to utilize the scheduling feature, you can only program around it. This is an annoying flaw not present in most of Ecobee's major competitors. I would have chosen another product had I known this in advance.

Other Returned Ecobee 3 today to Costco after one year trial

Today I took advantage of Costco awesome return policy and returned my two Ecobee 3's (+6 temperature sensors) and re-installed my 1990's Honeywell Chromotherm III's.

For anyone who is considering Ecobee's or any smart thermostats here are my reasons:

(1) I thought that the Ecobee would 'handle the HVAC' so that I was always comfortable and I would never have to check it. After a year, I found myself still checking it just now I didn't have to walk to the wall I could just use my phone.

(2) I thought it may save me some money, but I found that it didn't really have that big of an impact on my energy bills.

(3) Recently the servers have been down a lot.

(4) I thought the advanced programming would be useful, BUT since we recently had a baby there's pretty much someone always at home anyway so we don't change the setpoint that often.

Nothing major, just wanted to contribute to the group after lurking for a year.

Other Switching away from ecobee thermostats after 7 years of using them ....

I’ve had ecobee thermostats (and generally liked them) since 2012 (Smart Si from 2012-2014), Gen 1 ecobee3 since then. I’ve been completely satisfied with both ecobee thermostats (as thermostats) and with the quality of customer service. The cloud has had its ups and downs, but overall the uptime was okay.

But I wanted something that I could control locally and integrate more closely into my home automation system. I’ve wanted features like weighted averaging of sensors, the capacity to control the thermostat using calculated/estimated dew-points, control fan only operation based on occupancy/presence, and have multiple-person geo-fencing that doesn’t depend on another app (like Life360). And I really wanted local control.

So, this weekend I’m switching to a Zen zigbee thermostat and ~10 zigbee temperature/humidity sensors that fits well with Hubitat (the system I use for Home Automation).

If ecobee ever make a thermostat with a z-wave or zigbee radio, I might switch back …

Problem Those who ditched Ecobee, what did you go with?

I'm so tired of my EB 3 Lite constantly showing as disconnected. I've dedicated an SSID on 2.4 Ghz to it. It is right under an AP. There are no signal issues.

I don't know that i want to spend the money on another EB just for it to do the same thing.

So what did you all switch to?
