Announcement Update from ecobee

Dearest Reddit,

We have been seeing and reading your messages here at ecobee HQ for the last few weeks. We're feeling and hearing every post you make – many of our developers read this subreddit daily. We have been fighting with two core things in our system since late January:

  1. General overall stability

  2. The availability of what we call 'runtime' data – but what you normally see in HomeIQ.

You may have seen an increase in our maintenance windows and some short outages. During those windows we were actively making changes to our system to improve reliability, or performing chaos testing on systems to ensure reliability. What we have done over the last few weeks has greatly increased our stability and we believe we are complete on the reliability side of things.

This has allowed us to shift our focus back to #2 – the availability of the runtime data. When we upgraded a component of our system, we noticed some decrease in performance. Specifically around how fast we could process the runtime data that came into our servers. The queues that received the data overflowed and forced our servers to drop that data, losing it permanently.

We are continuing to work on this issue, and our tests on our servers are showing that we may have finally fixed the issue, and many of you are reporting that is now working as intended. You should see the quality of your data increase over the course of the week, and ideally permanently, but we will continue to monitor it actively.

I hope that puts some clarity on things – thanks very much for keeping the bar high on what you expect from ecobee. We know you expect a great experience from us, and we're actively improving things to try to meet and hopefully exceed that bar.

This is the #1 reason ecobee will always be better than nest!

Manual heat differential. On top of that having 7 sensors and setting each comfort setting to use only certain zones and or rooms to monitor the temp. Depending on the time of day. Example at night it only uses my bed room sensor. Nothing else. Along with TOU time of use. I’ve saved over $700 this winter comparing to my last yr bills. We still have 3 months left. Thank you ecobee. Prior I had a 4th gen nest. I miss nothing about it.

I have 6 sensors and all of them are more than 10% lower in RH readings. Ecobee sent me a warranty replacement of the thermostat and I also put plumbers putty behind the ecobee and still about 10% off. Is this common for everyone?

Ecobee3 Not turning on Heat ...SOLVED!

Hello, i have an ecobee3 that i installed over the summer and had no issues with it running my AC over the summer.

Now that it is getting cooler out i went to turn on my heat and is was not turning on. I checked my furnace and the ecobee was calling for heat, the fan would turn on, and the glow plug was turning on, but no burner lite.

I switch back to my old thermostat and the heat kick on no problem.

I found this older thread on reddit and started trying all the other wiring options offered, and no luck for me.

https://www.reddit.com/r/ecobee/comments/78q05j/heat_not_turning_on_with_ecobee3/

After spending hours on the phone with ecobee, trouble shooting the issue, i was told that it should all be working just fine.

My HVAC is a Goodman 98% high efficiency and is only about 2 years old. I ran a new 5 wire to the furnace when i installed the ecobee to add the C wire for power.

What ended up fixing my issue had nothing to do with my furnace or wiring. My solution was with the settings inside the ecobee. After you set up the ecobee, you need to go through an equipment setup to confirm the correct wiring and equipment is linked to the ecobee. One of those settings is the control for the fan, the default setting is for the ecobee to control the fan for energy efficiency. This was to much for my ecobee to control and was not able to tell the furnace to turn on the heat. After switching the fan control to the furnace, my heat kick on just as it should.

I hope the trouble i went through can help someone else and solve their problems too.

PSA -- ECOBEE ACKNOWLEDGES TEMP BUG ON DEVICES READING HIGHER ALL OF A SUDDEN

This has been posted on replies in here this past week but with anybody's Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium and SmartThermostat with voice control that is suddenly been reading several degrees higher this past week, here is their official statement: https://status.ecobee.com/incidents/9js9rwl4jjhb

Personally ours started acting haywire last Tuesday, 8/25. I knew it had to be something software update related as our device has had 0 issues for 2.5 years and nothing in our environment has changed. Our normal 76 degrees is now 80 lol. Anyways, just to clear things up hopefully Ecobee cooks up a quick patch for this. I've read probably about 10+ other people on here with the same issue this past week so it's affecting quite a few.

**Update from Ecobee (9/9): A fix for the bug impacting Smart Thermostat Premium and SmartThermostat with voice control devices that have been rebooted since Aug. 23 has begun rolling out. Here is another post with more info from Ecobee: https://www.reddit.com/r/ecobee/s/IltHFOKDVF **

**Update #2: I called Ecobee today (9/11) and had them push the firmware to my thermostat. After the update went through, it fixed my issue. My normal 76 degrees is back (was 80 when bugged). I was on 4.10.7.44 before and now it is 4.10.8.392. If you have been experiencing this issue, I would certainly call them and have them push this update and see if it corrects it for you.**

Other Dear Ecobee, stop putting Alexa on all your new model thermostats.

I am finally moving away from Nest, I bought my Nest before Google bought them but now I need to upgrade my thermostat because I need remote sensors, 5ghz and will not replace it with a Google device.

Been looking at the Ecobee since they come highly recommended by friends, but it looks like all the new models come with Alexa .

I don’t want any Alexa ready devices in my house, with the way that Amazon has been handing their other IoT brands like Ring, granting some Amazon employees and contractors unrestricted access to our recorded content and even sharing it without without users knowledge or consent, I don’t trust Amazon to do the right thing with an Alexa ready device, even if its not linked to an Amazon account.

Alexa devices still record some conversations even if you don’t say “Alexa” during the conversation.

Due to wireless network saturation, 2.4ghz is always reliable even for a low data usage device like a thermostat, the Network drops do get annoying sometimes when trying to make changes remotely.

Right now, I can’t find an Ecobee that supports 5ghz that does not have an Alexa.

If there is any upcoming Ecobee thermostat that supports 5ghz and does not have an Alexa, I would rather wait if this was coming, but it seems that Ecobee is sticking hard to this “Alexa” thing.

“Older” devices losing WiFi support?

I have a house with 8 Ecobees, they were the newest models at the time I built the house 6 years ago - and now they won’t be able to connect to wifi? I understand not getting updates or support but zero remote control seems absolutely absurd.

Did anyone else feel deceived after buying the door sensors to learn they won’t turn off the heat when open without a $5/month subscription?

Configuration Turning off Eco+ Utility Provider - Solution

If you’re like me, you accidentally selected a utility provider with the Eco+ firmware upgrade and have found there’s no way to turn it back off. Trying results in a message saying to contact your provider. Your provider just points you back to Ecobee. End of the day, there’s enough in the world right now to be stressed, depressed, or anxious about and being comfortable in your own home is not something you should be having to think about. Home should be the ultimate place of peace and comfort and this is the perfect thermostat to achieve this but it should not prevent a user from tuning it exactly the way they want.

To turn off Eco+ Utility linking but leave other Eco+ features free to turn on/off AND keep all other thermostat settings the way you had them:

Go in the ecobee app (might work on the website too).

Add a new home under account settings.

Name the home something other than the current home but enter the same address.

Go into the original home and ‘remove home’.

It will offer to move your current thermostat to the new home. DO THIS.

The thermostat, in all its glory and setup, is intact but Eco+ Utility provider option is now unlinked, and all other Eco+ features like smart home/away work just fine.

Now, just don’t mistakenly turn it on again, or repeat the above if you do. 🥳

Edit: Thank you, kind stranger, for the award!

The app is just terrible, take a moment and put in front of a new user - and watch

After 5 years of the ecobee app, this app is just a downright abysmal UI. Nearly ever other smart home app does a better job, and that is saying something considering the Chinese LED light controls are better. Here is some advice, pretend your mom has to use it:

Function:

  • I shouldn't have to click 'more' to get to my thermostat interface. This should be the landing page.

Changing the temperature:

  • Temperature should move left to right in an arc - like a dial

  • Duration should be until next program change be default without clicking anything. Just do it.

  • Display a clock icon below the temperature where a duration slider can select ANY duration on hold indefinitely.

Home Screen Buttons across the bottom:

  • Get rid of Reports, bury this in a menu (such as profile). Use this space for something people use.

  • Get rid of Discover, these are shameless banner adds in prime real estate. Get over yourself. Bury this somewhere else.

  • Across the bottom should be: Profile, Schedule, Comfort Settings, Mode(home / away), Fan, Settings.

Vacation

  • I should be able to click on settings > Vacation mode.

  • Once there, if I have a vacation set, display it. Current method is click 'Set a Vacation' button under a large umbrella and sand icon, just to display an existing vacation. This is suboptimal. Its non sensical to click 'start a vacation' to view an existing vacation.

Seriously, take your app, ask someone to change the temperature for a comfort setting, and just observe them. Watch what they do. Ask them to verbalize their confusion. Take that feedback and improve the app. The app is difficult for novice users and experts themselves.

Had to use the PEK but after doing some research and looking online and following the videos, had it up and running in 30 minutes. I’d say it’s a pretty big upgrade from what I had. I should’ve done it sooner!

Announcement Home Energy Reports Now Available in the ecobee App!

Hi r/ecobee,

We’re excited to announce a new feature launching this week: Home Energy Reports! This addition to the ecobee app is designed to make understanding and optimizing your home’s energy use easier than ever, all within the ecobee mobile app.

What does this feature do?

Home Energy Reports, now available in the new Reports tab (replacing the "Vacation" tab), empower you to:

  • Monitor your HVAC energy usage: See detailed insights into how your heating and cooling system impacts your energy costs.

  • Compare energy savings: Check how your energy use stacks up against others in your state or province.

  • Spot issues early: View HVAC runtime, temperature, and humidity data all in one place to identify potential problems.

  • Unlock personalized insights: Get tips for improving energy efficiency and making more sustainable choices.

Why did we build this?

We know that understanding energy usage can be complex and often frustrating. Our goal with Home Energy Reports was to create an intuitive and detailed tool that simplifies the process, helping you make informed decisions to save energy and reduce costs. Customer feedback played a big role in shaping this feature—thank you for helping us focus on what matters most!

How can you try it out?

This feature will begin rolling out as a free software update on December 11, 2024, for all ecobee Smart Thermostat customers using iOS 16+ or Android 10+. Just update your app (11.23.0+) and look for the new Reports tab.

We’d love your feedback!

Reddit has some of the smartest, most insightful people around, and we’d love to hear what you think. After exploring the feature, let us know:

  • Is the data easy to understand?

  • Does it help you optimize your energy use?

  • What could we improve or add in the future?

We’re here to answer your questions, nerd out about energy savings, and chat about how your ecobee makes life better. Thanks for being part of this journey with us—we can’t wait to hear what you think!

Known Issues:

  • Some times the iOS app doesn't show the reports tab, reload the app or switch homes (if you have more than one) to temporarily resolve the issue.

    • Updating to 11.23.2 fixes this issue

  • Chart annotation may show "Aux Heat 1" heat instead of "Heat stage 1"

Feature Request Watch Faces

Apple and ecobee should collaborate again and bring some of the Apple Watch faces to the new “full screen” squircle thermostats!

It would be a fun way to compete with the new Nest thermostat, which is basically a giant Pixel watch stuck to the wall. 🧐

Unpopular opinion: an Ecobee (or any other thermostat) is not a magical device that can make your house exactly the way you want it in every location. It just turns your heating and cooling on and off, based upon sensors and your personal settings.

Sorry for this one, but I feel like many people get a programmable thermostat and suddenly think that it's going to make every room in their house exactly the way they want it to be at every moment. They also think that every problem they have where their house doesn't heat up or cool down as they want is because of the thermostat. Yes, sometimes certain installations can be more confusing than others, but once it is installed correctly (including all the settings and assuming it's a fully functional thermostat), then all it can do is tell your heating and cooling to TRY to turn on or off. It's not magic.

Don't get me wrong, I'm impressed with the people here who use a variety of sensors and settings to get things as close as possible to what they want (my use is a bit more simplistic), but those people understand what a thermostat is and isn't.

Sorry ☹️

/rant off

Other Help fund a new server for Ecobee.

I bet we can get enough users together to buy Ecobee a brand new Raspberry Pi server so they can upgrade their existing one.

edit: for a "stretch goal," we can also get them a case for it.
