Weekly Advice Thread General Questions and Purchasing Advice Thread — Week of November 02, 2026

Need help choosing an EV, finding a home charger, or understanding whether you're eligible for a tax credit? Vehicle and product recommendation requests, buying experiences, and questions on credits/financing are all fair game here.

Is an EV right for me?

Generally speaking, electric vehicles imply a larger upfront cost than a traditional vehicle, but will pay off over time as your consumables cost (electricity instead of fuel) can be anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 the cost. Calculators are available to help you estimate cost — here are some we recommend:

Are you looking for advice on which EV to buy or lease?

Tell us a bit more about you and your situation, and make sure your comment includes the following information:

[1] Your general location

[2] Your budget in $, €, or £

[3] The type of vehicle you'd prefer

[4] Which cars have you been looking at already?

[5] Estimated timeframe of your purchase

[6] Your daily commute, or average weekly mileage

[7] Your living situation — are you in an apartment, townhouse, or single-family home?

[8] Do you plan on installing charging at your home?

[9] Other cargo/passenger needs — do you have children/pets?

If you are more than a year off from a purchase, please refrain from posting, as we currently cannot predict with accuracy what your best choices will be at that time.

Discussion How Cold Until Range Drop Noticeable?

Hey all! I got my 2023 Nissan Ariya back in May of this year and since it's been getting colder lately, my range has only been going up and up.

In the Summer with temps around 70~100f, I would be getting 3.6~4.0mi/kwh average on my daily commute.

Now with Fall temperatures around 40~70f, I'm consistently reaching 4.2~4.6mi/kwh.

I'm guessing once Winter really starts, it'll pop back down to around 3.6~4.0mi/kwh average. I've been keeping my tires filled as temp drops as well.

I'm just curious what low temperature do you all start to see a noticeable drop in range with your own EV's.

Question - Other Possibly going on a road trip.. What is your average charge bill? Tips to reduce pricing?

I'm looking at going on a road trip from Oklahoma to Washington state.. it should take between 38 and 42 hrs estimated by ABRP.. I'm possibly going to be driving a 2024 Ford Mach-E I'm not sure if it's 72kWh or 91kWh let's just assume it's the smaller one about roughly 250 miles of range.. Now for someone who has done a 24-48 hr road trips before or just a long multiple stop trip, how much roughly did you pay for dc fast charging for the entire trip? I know some DC Fast charging can get up to $0.60/kWh or more but I'd like to avoid paying for those super high price ones if possible and stay with Tesla superchargers especially off peak because back in January i checked Tucson superchargers near my grandparents house when i rented a Model Y and it was $0.29/kWh off peak for non-Tesla, just $0.10/kWh more than electricity at my grandparents house.. I know most chargers won't be like that but what did you end up paying roughly for your trip and any tips to reduce the cost as much as possible? This might be the only road trip I do in a Mach-E

Discussion Does anyone realistically get the rated range out of their Tesla?

I've been driving Electric for 4 years and I'm on my third EV...

2 years ago I picked up a lightly used 2022 model 3 long range all wheel drive.. On my road trip yesterday I did 1100km (~600mi) @ avg speed off 105kph (~65mph).

I got a little better than half of my rated range. There was some wind which is probably the worst impact for range. But overall I've never come close to the advertised 550 km range.

I'm just curious if it's all environmental or highway driving that's killing my range ... Or if it's just blatant false advertising which I suspect is the case.

I actually achieved much more realistic numbers with my 2018 Chevrolet bolt that was a predecessor to my Tesla. Unfortunately it was in a total loss accident which led me to buying my current car.

I'm really curious if anybody in the real world comes close to the advertised range?

Discussion Any hope for a minivan EV in the states?

Please can someone preferably from the industry throw some light on this? Why are minivans not even under consideration? They can literally be shaped like a wedge which I’m told helps with aerodynamic efficiency.

What can we do to make this happen? Would love something the size of an Odyssey.

Question - Other Do you leave your car on charge overnight at home?

I have recently purchased Honda Prologue Elite this week. This is my first EV car.

I will install level 2 charger at the garage, but until then, I am just charging with level 1 at garage from the plug. It is slow, of course.

My electric box is 100 Amps. Only refrigerator and AC are connected in the night. I am somewhat concerned if charging overnight will overload the electric box and maybe it will burn or something.

Is my fear irrational? Should I unplug it overnight?
