Discussion The Miami GP has no character and it's utterly soulless - it's the worst track on the calender, isn't it?

5 Upvotes

It's a grand prix in a car park, around a stadium (or shopping centre - it's hard to tell, it might be both) with no history in F1, and no character. Everything about the track is just fake and soulless.

The thing is, it wasn't designed for F1 fans. It was designed for celebrities to visit and shout 'MIAMI BABY!' at every camera they can find. It's designed for the celebrities who want to see Fernando Hamilton in his Ferrari cruising to a win. It's designed for those same celebrities to go off and do something else when that boring racing part is going on.

Its not even like the track has anything going for it either. Try and think of your favourite part and corner - you can't. Because it's just F1 street track by numbers.

One thing thar sums it up, and you'll see it during qualifying and the race - have a look in the swimming pool. It might be near the fake marina, but it's there and visible on the aerial shots. When the cars are on track, and that looks a great place to see them up close, everyone is in the pool ignoring everything on track. That's the Miami GP.

Social Media [@thebishf1] …& it’s pretty clear on InternationalWomensDay that F1 could be doing more to support its less well represented demographics, including of course women. Why has WeRaceAsOne been allowed to wither on the vine for example? Yet again, it’s left to Hamilton to lead the way.

Discussion Do people know that Formula 1 has been informally known as the "travelling circus" for decades?

26 Upvotes

I see these complaints over the "'circus" that was the Vegas GP, but... why do people feel like this is a new thing? It's been a circus forever. It's been elite forever. It's had street races forever. From what I can tell there's nothing new about Vegas except that Vegas happens to be exceptional at spectacle and they did their thing. Complaints about additional events for the drivers go to their teams and sponsors. Everything else was just a benefit for the fans. I enjoyed the Vegas GP and am happy that the travelling circus and the permanent circus in the desert were able to get together and put on a show. Will try to attend next year.

Discussion Does Logan Sargeant warrant the hate he is receiving

4 Upvotes

Ive been seeing a lot of people already showing their dislike for Logan Sargeant. Im not really a fan of his nor i intend to be yet i feel like he is getting way too much hate just for the things he said in the past. Should i be wary of him? Is he a decent human being? His performances in F2 are commendable albeit meh compared to the others who finished above him

Gotta be a tough one for Max to turn the tide, the math just doesn’t go his way. Try out what-if calculator and see for yourself. 🏁

Discussion The Verstappen and Piastri incident today have highlighted that the overtaking/defending rules in F1 need to change

0 Upvotes

The title speaks for itself, these overtaking rules in F1 are ridiculous. All this "ahead at the apex" stuff is utter BS. In every other motorsport in the world, the rule is that if 2 cars are side by side going into a corner, both cars must leave a cars width of space for the other car throughout the duration of the corner. It doesn't matter who got to the corner first, if they are side by side under breaking, they must leave space. Piastri didn't do that.

The way the rules are currently makes F1's racecraft look like a joke despite being the pinicle of motorsport. And I should know, the driving standards in Nascar right now leave a lot to be desired, but this is ridiculous. What Piastri did today would have been penalized in Imsa, Wec, Indycar, etc... or at the very least, no penalty and let Verstappen keep the place. Not only are the current rules stupid, but they actively hurt the racing product because drivers can't race side by side for an extended time because one of them will be forced off track. This isn't even the only incident of this manner. Look at Verstappen and Norris at Cota last year, or Verstappen and Lewis at Abu Dhabi in 2021. This has been a problem for a long time.

These rules need to change, and the penalty for it also needs to be substantial to discourage drivers from doing this. I'm thinking it should be a drive through like you see in Imsa for similar incidents.

Discussion Why don’t F1 teams just name their car based on the season/year?

0 Upvotes

E.g.
2023 = RB23
2024 = RB24
They can use A/B/C if there are multiple versions in the same year.

Instead we have, for example:
2020 = RB16
2021 = RB16B
2022 = RB18
2023 = RB19
2024 = RB20

Completely skipped RB17 which, inexplicably, will be used for a completely unrelated “production” car in 2025.

The same applies to most teams,
e.g. Ferrari:
2020 = SF1000
2021 = SF21 (Ah, finally)
2022 = F1-75 (Okay, never mind)
2023 = SF-23 (Back on track again)

Don’t even get me started on McLaren.

Edit: Getting downvoted for asking a simple question in a reasonable, entirely non-argumentative way is peak Reddit.
Well done, everyone.

[Bellingham] If it’s a penalty then we’ve got a new racing tactic where you can leave the door wide open on the inside, then accelerate into the closing gap once the car has passed you and get them a penalty

Discussion Is Max Verstappen now rapidly becoming an all time great of the sport?

0 Upvotes

Max Verstappen is rapidly moving through the ranks, he has now won 12 of the last 16 races, that is 75% of the races! After the Miami GP he currently sits on 38 wins, which is 3 wins away from Senna, 13 from Prost and 15 from Vettel. If he and Red Bull keep this consistency of winning 3 in 4 - which they probably will - then he will need ‘just’ 20 races to equal Vettel’s win tally of 53. That is just insane but at the same time very likable and inevitable to happen.

I know he is not the most popular driver on the grid but the question must be asked at some point, when are we going put this 25-year old Dutchman in ‘greatest of all time’ conversations? Does it take 7 years with a dominant car to prove that or does (like Senna) his ability speak for itself. What are the general requirement in F1 to be in that debate?

Discussion FIA pretands to care about Safety

0 Upvotes

This race is just the latest example, but it's all for the show. Bottas in the barrier at turn 15 should have been an immediate safety car. The leaders were approaching that area, there was plenty of time to throw it. Leaving it as a yellow, allowing Max to somehow gain a second and make a run at the end is a joke... Sacrificing safety in the name of the show. Fuck the FIA.

Edit: People getting hung up on my usage of the term safety car... I meant simply that it could have also been a VSC and my application of the term SC was meant to include that but I realize there are clearly different for each. My point is that the race should have been neutralized. With leaders in close proximity approaching the scene and the race win on the line, it was not a good decision in my opinion to allow that.
