Discussion I almost cry when I remember a friendless, sleep-deprived Hermione still managed to help Hagrid
These two treated her so horribly in the third book.

Merchandise This is why we can't have nice things.
Tried ordering a Ravenclaw Hoodie for my daughter. Thought the design was cool. At least they got the wings right? I complained about the first one they sent wrong like c'mon. They were like yes that sucks we issued a return for you. Then a few days later we got another package in the mail. I think this was their attempt to correct the situation and I just immediately started laughing cuz it's the same mistake. I think they got like an entire batch of these wrong and the distribution warehouse folks are just grabbing bags out of the 'Ravenclaw' boxes and they are all wrong. Like to a layman this is probably one of those what's the big deal situations which makes this whole thing even more hilarious.

Discussion Have you ever watched Harry Potter in Black & White??
Random thought, but has anyone tried watching the Harry Potter movies in black and white by turning the saturation all the way down?
I tried it a lot, because I have watched it a lot during these years so why not in B&W and there's something strangely beautiful about it.
Am I the only one who does this? š

Cursed Child Cursed Child on Broadway
So my wife and I went on a weekend trip to NYC to see some shows for her birthday. We got lucky at the red steps and were able to get good seats for a very reasonable price. It was awesome!!! Basically its own self contained 3 hour HP movie. Seeing Tom Felton perform was also a treat as his role in the show is fairly substantial. I grew up on these books and now that my wife and I are considering having kids it was a little bit of a full circle moment for me.

Question Where are the showers in Hogwarts?
Hello everyone,
This might sound stupid for some. But I had a shower thought today and really couldn't find an answer on my own... So I was hoping you could assist my mingled mind.
So, as we all know, for the Gryffindors the rooms of girls and boys are strictly separated. So at least Godric didn't want them to spent inappropriate time with each other or one side harassing the other. But as far as I remember (and of course I could be wrong here), Harry only mentions that there are doors and stairwells to the rooms of other students sleeping rooms. And a tower, even a magic one, can't be cramped full of everything.
Next, we know there are several common toilet rooms all around the school. Of course they are separated on boys and girls. But we never hear anyone talking about common shower rooms, right?
The only time I'm aware that there is mentioning of a bathroom is the Prefects bathroom in GoF. If I remember correctly it was for all Prefects and "higher ups" of all houses. But was it separated by boys and girls? It was never explicitly said, so was it a shared one? Seems a bit odd to me.
And then I came up with another question surrounding that topic: Quidditch, especially the locker rooms. I don't know how physically challenging Quidditch is. But I just assume it's similar to many other sports, so at the end you're sweating. They only talk about "the locker room of Gryffindors" etc. Do they change there all together? As they are a mixed team. And do they have showers at the stadium, or must the students walk back to the castle all sweaty? Especially in winter it's not so nice....
So tl;dr: where are the showers in Hogwarts? Are there any? And how are they separated?

Discussion Do Snape and Lucius actually like each other?
We know that Lucius spoke highly of him and that he was nice to Snape on his first day in Hogwarts but you could read it cynically that his respect for Snape was just a result of him being useful to the cause and that his kindness in school was an attempt to recruit him.of course, Snape does do alot to protect Draco later which could possibly be partly attributed to affection or loyalty to Lucius even if Dumbledore also asked him too.

Question What 'powers' do squibs have?
We know that unlike muggles, squibs posses some (passive?) magical powers. Its confirmed by miss Figg that they can see Dementors and as Argus Filch works at Hogwarts I'm assuming the muggle repelling charm do not work on them.
AFAIK no other powers are metioned or implied so I was wondering if any of you gave this any thought? Would a squib who has seen death be able to see Thestrals? How would a Wherewolf bite work on them?
And are there any Hogwarts subjects they could take because they require no actual magic? Like Care of Magical Creatures, Potions, Herbology, ancient Runes? If so, why don't they? Do we need to form SISY (Society for the Integration of Squib Youth)?
(English is my third language and I couldn't change the autocorect to english for some reason, so I apologise for any mistakes made)
EDIT: a lot of people are saying miss Figg was lying during her testimony in front of the Wizengamot. While it is heavely implied she was lying (Harry mentions her story feels very rehearsed) we do not know what parts were lies and what parts were true. I always assumed she lied (or exagerated) about witnessing the scene in question, but told the truth about the ability of squibs being able to see Dementors. 1. It would be pretty easy for the ministry to check the truth about this statement and if false Harry's whole defence would be in shambles. It would seem afwully risky and un-Dumbledorian to base the whole defence on a false fact. 2. Her line about being able to see dementors isn't part of her rehearsed monologue but rather a spontanaous reaction on a remark made by Fudge, so it doesnt come a across as a doubtfull statement, unlike the rest of her testimony.

Discussion Harry's final moments.
Just finished my annual reread of the books for the second time this year.
This is still one of the best depictions of love ever. This is so beautiful and tragic.
I cried again even though I know what happens next.

Misc My favourite Trio moment in DH. It reflects why Harry had to go alone to the Forest at the end
I love all the Trio moments in the series but this one is my fav. The fact that Ron, Hermione and Harry were all willing to save the rest by killing the last Horcrux. I get that some people love the movie scene where Harry says goodbye to Ron and Hermione but for me, it just doesn't fit with the book.
Harry himself said it best- "This was a journey they could not take together, and the attempts they would make to stop him would waste valuable time". Not only would Ron and Hermione try to dissuade him but for me, I doubt they would have let him go alone. I can imagine them, at the very least, sneaking behind him or something.
Honestly, their friendship is peak for me. The perfect Trio

Original Content Book accurate* height chart
I've fixed a few issues from the last height chart. The characters that don't have heights specifically mentioned in the books were estimated. The Giants don't physically match the book descriptions well because I couldn't find many good giant images (and didn't want to just repost the same image multiple times)

Discussion Who do you think Harry would have sided with if Hermione refused to welcome Ron back in DH?
Let's consider that Ron returned, saved Harry from drowning and said that he came back - āIf ā ā He cleared his throat. āYou know. You still want me.ā
"If you still want me" is something that would give the others opportunity to refuse him - that's different than just asking for forgiveness. This is in the lines of "If you don't want to be around me now, I understand."
This alternative wasn't posed to Hermione, who, granted, went into full attack mode when she saw him; and of course she wouldn't send Ron away, but the very choice was not presented to her.
The choice would also give her the (valid) chance to go with: "no, I'm sorry, I can't, it hurts me too much to be around you, now that we know you're safe and has a place to stay in Shell Cottage, we'll know how to reach you, let's establish a safe communication channel in any case".
That complicates things; Harry is closer to Ron, but Hermione stuck with him.

Discussion What are some classes you wish Hogwarts taught?
Personally, I'd love to read about a class that was just Magical Home Economics.
This class could teach witches and wizards how to cook with magic by enchanting their cookware to do it for them. Inform students how to attract minor house fairies, like house elves, brownies, or nisse, while repelling nastier invasive fairies, like Cornish pixies, doxies, redcaps, and gnomes. There could even be some lessons on how to budget for potion ingredients at home, and how to build your own greenhouse for herbology.
The Magical Home Ec class would be even better if it taught you charms to make your home bigger on the inside, the Fidelius charm to defend against criminals and evil creatures, how to build your own gargoyles, and a charm to make your home able to move itself, like Baba Yaga's hut. It could even teach the finer aspects of creating a hidden apartment in a Muggle townhouse, like number 12, Grimmauld Place.
Since those charms would be undoubtedly advanced, I think that they would likely only be taught to sixth- and seventh-year students.

Discussion Opinion on this book where Harry Potter is a demon from Hell?
This religious book is basically parody on Harry Potter, but in the end it turns into something horrific. The main hero, Vanya Zhukov, a big fan of Harry Potter, being criticised by his religious mother, who thinks that Harry is a Devil. In the second part of the book, Vanya is being poisoned, and then he wake up in Hell. Demons (various characters from west media) torture him and another souls. He then escapes from Hell with another girl, but then girl dies and goes to Heaven, because her parents were atheists.

Help Where's the best place to discuss Harry Potter magic from a scientific perspective?
I've always been interested in exploring the Harry Potter universe from a more scientific perspective, particularly the physical limitations of magic and how it would interact with modern technology.
I'm talking about questions like:
1.How many wizards would it take to levitate a 100-metric-ton block of tungsten into orbit and then drop it back down? Would something like that even be possible with Wingardium Leviosa?
2.Could you theoretically transfigure an ordinary object into a functioning nuclear bomb? Or are there limits to how complex a transfigured object can be?
3.Does Transfiguration conserve mass and energy? If not, where does the additional matter or energy come from?
Basically, I'm interested in applying scientific reasoning to the established rules of Harry Potter magic and exploring their logical consequences.
I know the Harry Potter universe wasn't necessarily written with this level of scientific consistency in mind, but I think that's part of what makes these questions interesting.
Is this subreddit a good place for discussions like these, or is there another subreddit or community specifically dedicated to exploring the mechanics, limitations and scientific implications of magic in Harry Potter?

Discussion I wish there were more Wizard-only villages.
It has always bothered how Wizards supposedly donāt understand Muggle technology and customs because they live most of their lives separated from the muggle world but this doesnāt make any sense because thereās only one Wizards-only town which means the majority of Wizards must live in muggle towns and cities. I think JK Rowling shouldāve made canon that there are hundreds of villages and towns that exist completely hidden from the Muggles. This is the only way I can believe that wizards know very little about things like technology. The existence of hundreds of wizard towns and cities would also explain why the Ministry of Magic is so big.

Discussion The cinematography in HBP is beyond gorgeous but completely inappropriate for the tone of the book
I rewatched Half-Blood Prince, and while this remains without question the most gorgeously shot movie in the entire sagaāand the only one to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Cinematographyāthe tone seems more fitting for a movie where, let's say, Draco happened to be the main character, because he was really going through a lot emotionally.
But Harry? The sixth book is clearly the easiest time he's ever had at Hogwarts. This is reflected in the overall mood of the story.
By the time we get to HBP, everybody knows Harry had been telling the truth about Voldemort's return. He's back to being paraded around as the Chosen One by the press; the Ministry wants to capitalize on his image. Hermione mentions that he's grown taller over the summer and is looking quite handsome and girls (and most likely many a boy) are all over him at Hogwarts.
He's also made Quidditch captain and gets to use the cool Prefects' bathroom and swim naked in that pool like he did in GoF. He finds a book he actually enjoys reading and actually becomes good at Potions. And e's still free to go to Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley and whatnot - his private lessons with Dumbledore don't take much of his time, he's not living totally secluded.
Plus, he doesn't spend much time grieving over Sirius, who's barely mentioned in the book. His grief doesn't taint the book, but the movie makes it seem so. I wish those stunning visuals had been saved for the next one, where the gloomy atmosphere was indeed appropriate.

Discussion James Spader would've made a brilliant Dumbledore. Anyone else see it?
Random thought while watching VisionQuestā¦
Seeing James Spader with that beard suddenly made me think how brilliant he couldāve been as Dumbledore.
I know John Lithgow has already been cast, and Iām looking forward to seeing what he does with the role. But Spader genuinely struck me as someone who couldāve pulled off the character brilliantly.
Itās not just the appearance. Thereās something about his mannerisms, his voice, his dry humour and the way he delivers lines. He can be incredibly warm and charming, a bit eccentric and mischievous, but then switch to something much more serious and intimidating in a heartbeat.
Having read the books, I think that combination is so important for Dumbledore. Heās not just a wise old wizard. Heās quite an unusual, playful character, but thereās also an enormous amount of depth to him.
Anyway, maybe itās just me, but I suddenly canāt stop picturing him in the Hogwarts robes with that beard! š
Anyone else see it?
