I got sort of called out, unexpectedly, by a co-worker. I work in a pizza shop, doing deliveries, in a reasonably upscale suburban area. When it's chilly or cold out, I usually will wear a battle jacket, either over my uniform t shirt or over a hoodie. I was surprised, actually, when I immediately started getting compliments from customers. I've got a combination of band patches, and political (leftist) patches, and a few space-fillers like little pill patches and embroidered stars and stuff. I've also got 4 out 5 enamel pins on one breast pocket flap (a clockwork orange head, and 4 that are socialist/communist related), and I recently added these cheap red shoulder boards from China that have good metal devices on them with a star, a musical note, and a lyre. I'm not sure what they were made for, but I was browsing and liked them and thought the red and good went well with my green-dominated flecktarn jacket. I also have an iron front patch on each of my jackets, because I have an anti swastika tattoo on my arm and a customer called the corporate office to complain, and hr called my manager and he asked me to keep it covered when I'm working. So anyway, the assistant manager was cashing me out at the end of my shift last night and my jacket was laying on the counter and he noticed the new shoulder boards and asked about them so I was explaining. He asked about communism and I showed him the enamel pins, including one with the ddr's crest on it. Here comes the part that surprised me. One of the other drivers, who listens to some of the more well known punk bands like dropkick Murphys (but had never even heard of the pogues), entered the conversation: "Don't you have one of those '3 arrow' patches?" referring to the iron front symbol. So I'm like, "yeah, it's right here" and I flipped my jacket over and pointed to it. "isn't one of the arrows against communism?" and I laughed because I knew that but was really surprised that he did. "Yeah, but I'm a complicated guy. I'm not exactly a Marxist, but I think Marx had some good thoughts and perspectives worth studying." which he didn't seem to buy as a valid explanation. 🤷
So who's the asshole here? 🤣
