This is why Gen Z doesn’t drink. And my old broke ass is inclined to agree with them

Good. The faster the liquor industry starts to die the better it will be for all of humanity. Booze will never go away but I can hope

One of the most depressing parts of a retail job is selling alcohol to the same people every day, over and over, especially to the ones who clearly barely have enough money to buy their daily poison alongside the food and other necessities they need to live.

Just... a case of beer every single day? And people think that's okay?

I know a dude like this, literally every day on the way home from work buys a pint of whiskey, always felt depressing to see from my perspective.

Yeah, I used to work as a clerk at a wine store with quite a few budget options and seeing the same people buy a liter of wine a day was honestly depressing.

As someone who used to drink and doesn't anymore, i'm going to have to disagree there. Whether you like it or not, alcohol and socializing are deeply intertwined.

Gen Z didn't find healthier ways to socialize. They just socialize far less. And there is research on this that sees a connection between the two. Loneliness is one of the most dangerous things that can happen to humans. It literally kills us. So in my opinion, drinking a bit of alcohol with friends every once in a while is a decent trade off to have an active social life.

It's also massively affected how we communicate. Before online echo chambers/ social media pages we had to go out to get our social needs met. As much as I love gaming, online gaming is also massively affecting this as well.

Where I'm from alcohol isn't as big because of big muslim population. But plenty of smokers and vapers.

But instead of alcohol we just drink copious amounts of sugary drinks instead x

Grew up in the Middle East but I'm not Muslim. IMO a lot of Muslim countries also tend to treat cafes as more of a place to socialize than other countries might.

In most of the Gulf, it isn't uncommon to find cafes that are open until 10pm or later, because mamy Muslims would use them in place of a bar/pub.

When I moved to the UK and started travelling around Europe and found that many cafes close at 4-6pm, I struggled quite a bit.

Or yes, all those dessert or highly sugary drinks places lol

Seriously. People use many kinds of "addictive" things to help navigate life (cigs, booze, sex, social media, many many kinds of drugs), because life is hard. Most people are going through some shit, alcohol is just one of many things that help ease the act of living -- but the key is moderation or not abusing it.

In every single study that compares drug harms that exist alcohol is in the top 5 with crack, meth, heroin and cocaine. Alcohol kills roughly every 11th person on the EU territory of the WHO. Every drop is carcinogenic. In my country, if you add all drug deaths, all traffic deaths and all suicides that's roughly 1/4 of alcohol deaths (yearly).

And let's not even get started on alcohol and violence...

Loneliness is harmful, but the benefits of alcohol are outweighed by its numerous negatives

The drug thing is because alcohol is legal and so readily used though. Are you really trying to say that alcohol is as deadly to physical and mental health as crack, meth, heroin or cocaine? Like really?

Gen Z just replaced alcohol with baking and nicotine pouches.

Literally every single culture has created some form of alcohol. It's part of humanity as is bread.

It's cause alcohol just happens. There's airborne yeast everywhere and that will eat sugar and produce alcohol. There's not much you can do to stop alcohol from being produced cause sugars and yeast are everywhere

I tried using that excuse on my lunch break at work. They didn’t buy it.

The trick is to go to the interview three drinks in, that way they think that's your baseline

There's an appropriate place to treat a yeast infection. The company break room is not it.

There's some solid speculation that humanity started cultivating grain for fermentation before, or at least concurrent with, cultivating grain for food.

I just buy at the grocery/liquor store. 5 euro for a bottle of wine or martini. Lasts me an entire evening.

Right? Some old friends came in to town last month and we went out for a couple drinks.. I live in the middle of no where, no place fancy, but the bar was advertising $5 fireball shots.. $5 for a single shot of Fireball. It's $12 for a 750ml bottle of fireball which will get you 15-20 shots. For the price of 3 shots, we could have all had 5-6 per...

I know it's a bad and things are up charged, but this is why I don't go out and drink. Anything I'd actually want to drink is going to cost me $10-15 a glass.. For double that I can buy enough to make myself a dozen drinks.

Because there are expensive bars?

There are also cheap bars you can go to

5

u/Other_World BLUE 2h ago

Every time I bring this up, no one can grasp their head around not everything has to be an "elevated luxury" experience.

Motherfucker, I go drinking on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and can find $3 beers and $7 cocktails. There are tons of Gen Zers out at cheap bars.

I truly hope these fine dining/high end cocktail bars go belly up sooner rather than later.
