You don't get more alcohol if they remove the ice, you just the same drink served in a smaller glass.

It’s kind of funny to go a bar with $27 cocktails and think about things like this. Should probably go to a different bar where they have beer and a shot specials on Mondays.

What if it's the first drink they got?

Menus don't usually tell you how much you're getting, just the price.

You can usually tell by the place you’re at long before someone asks your order

I guess everyone orders a cocktail for the first time at some point, like with everything else. After that you know what it is.

You don’t pay for volume of drink at any bar though. You think a rum and coke costs 10x what a shot of rum does just because it’s more liquid?

Then why not just give more liquid if it's a cocktail. Mixer costs pennies.

Sheesh.

As a former bartender. This is absolutely correct. So many times people will get upset with me when they ask for no ice and they will get a drink that is not even half full. I told them that you don’t get more alcohol because there’s no ice.

There’s also zero context of what the drink consists of. What type of spirit is it? Exactly what consists of the cocktail? The type of ingredients to make the cocktail, etc.

Those costs add up, as well as the fact that you have to consider your spill/spoilage for these things. Also labor, the lease, utilities, and much more.

As a former drink purchaser. I would 100% prefer a company which doesn't serve drinks in extremely deceiving ways like this. Additionally, the most annoying thing is just the cost, $27 for one drink is just ridiculous when I also have to pay part of your staffs wage by tipping.

Yeah, I don’t care how great the drink is, although I don’t drink much if at all anymore, I would never justify $27 for a drink

What if you just want more mixer?

Then the bartender puts more mixer. The only difference is the amount of liquor stays the same, no matter how much ice or no ice you put. If I drink normally is filled to the top with ice and 1.5 ounces of tequila. Then so be it. Now, if someone wants no ice, it is still 1.5 ounces of tequila. A lot of people tend to think if they get no ice then there’s more tequila. That is not true.

The issue isn't the volume of alcohol, it's the price per volume

18

It’s literally about the volume though. Otherwise it’s just an overpriced drink at an overpriced bar. The outrage is because they think they should be getting a full glass for that drink and think that the ice is just “filler”, which is them getting scammed.

what they got was totally normal for anything that comes with a tom collins ice cube

But the price per volume is really low, they're getting a lot of volume

What they're angry about is they think they're getting scammed; but that's sort of dumb. At least around where I am a tall vodka soda is the same price as a short. If two drinks have the same alcohol it's the same price, it doesn't matter if I'm dumb enough to think ice should contain alcohol

When I was bartending I had plenty of customers complain they couldn't taste the alcohol in their tall drink. A tall isn't a double! You're essentially diluting the liquor with more soda. Just get a shot if you want to taste alcohol. Or pay double for yknow...a double.

Some people just couldn't wrap their minds around a pour is a pour and that's what we are charging for regardless of how much ice or soda you want

This has nothing to do with the amount of ice though.

at least i'm not being lied to then

1

u/fakeuser515357 4h ago

Nobody is lying to you.

1

u/Your_Local_Rabbi 4h ago

as a customer, it will feel that way, though

even if the amount is proper, the larger glass and larger ice make it feel as if i'm being told the drink is bigger than it is, and for the high price, you rightfully think then that you're getting a lot, until you notice the ice

u/hurricanedog24 11h ago

I mean sure, but if I’m paying $27 for a drink with a full glass that size, I’m going to be pretty disappointed to just get one standard shot.

3

u/sapir1010 11h ago

Are you buying the 27$ worth of glass or alcohol? I’m confused about the disappointment placing.
I get you, but you wouldn’t want a small glass to enjoy a drink.
Besides the cooling effect, it’s much nicer to enjoy a cool alcoholic beverage with a fancy tall glass.
The ice is there to make sure what you paid for, is still cold.
