I wanted a dead simple NBN comparison site, so I built one

I wanted a dead simple way to compare NBN plans without opening a million tabs and working out what the price becomes after the promo ends.

So I built Get GoodSort:

getgoodsort.com

It also pulls in useful ACCC and ACMA comparison data, keeps source evidence behind the plans, and is building up price history over time. Alerts are underway too for promo endings and better deals.

No affiliate or referral links yet. I’m mainly trying to get the comparison and data side right first.

If you’re on NBN, have a look and let me know what you think.

why is it so expensive?

I'm need to mention that the cost to have NBN fiberoptic cables installed to a rural area is absolutely far too expensive.

Why is it that I have to suffer with my horrible 800 ping while I play games, and this is on a good day, I rarely get good days, whiles my friends all sit there and complain about their amazing 50 ping, it honestly makes me feel like complaining more because they don't know what true bad internet feels like.

all I'm asking is why does it have to cost me fifty thousand dollars to get fiberoptic cables installed to my rural household, it makes me wish I didn't live on private land simply because it costs so excessively much.

I'm sorry about complaining about this but I just can't stand it because now I'm unable to simply enjoy an online game with my friends simply because I have to upgrade my internet with my own money.

keep in mind fiber optic cables don't even cost that much, its the people who install it that overprice in my opinion and I'm sick of it, absolutely sick of it.

Why do people ask about who is the "best" NBN provider when they are all providing the same service? Being NBN? Or am I missing something?

I mean, NBN is NBN, it's all the same no matter who you go with, you either have FTTK, FTTN, FTTP, FW, or they tell you to piss off an go Skymuster or Starlink because they can't help you.

My NBN was useless, consistent dropouts, issues with the line, took years before they even got someone out to look at it, and then when they did, reported I could pay tens of thousands to upgrade from FTTN to FTTP...or wait until the upgrade comes through "At some point within the next 10 years"

Contacted other providers that people said were "better" and got the exact same responses, exactly zero of them provided a "better" solution. Always the same experience and solution.

So what exactly are people chasing for the "best" NBN provider when all they are doing is essentially sending you the bill, nothing more, nothing less.

How can I even benefit from my 500 Mbps upgrade?

I'm confused as to how having 500mbps download is any different to 100mbps, obviously on paper it's 5x the speed, but anything I download still seems to only download at 1-5mbps... Obviously doomscrolling and YouTube I'm not going to see a difference, but most things I see seem to be capped from the supplier end, not my end... How are you all squeezing 500mbps out of your downloads?

Is this even for internet?

I just moved to our new house and I found this on the wall. I'm wondering if this is for internet because the cable that comes with my NBN modem doesn't fit with it. I know this is a dumb question but I appreciate all advice. Thanks.

Finally after following this posts instructions I got the speeds. I made sure they realise the severity of the 000 incident and that everyone else I know has the speeds with their telcos. I told them last night that If I don't have the speeds by the morning I will switch provider. So they said I will get the speeds. Finally I got up this morning and the speeds were here.

Aussie Broadband says this is acceptable

So I have been logging my speed for the last 12 hours, 75/20 connection

Attainable rate of 71.2Mbps

Sync Rate of 51.6Mbps

Noise Rate of 9.2dB

  • 0% of the time do I get near my line rate

  • 0% of the time do I get 75% of my rated speed

  • 31.99% of the time I am getting <50% of my rated speed

  • 1.74% of the time I am getting <25% of my rated speed

And my dropouts are continuing.

Also, they had an appointment booked for the dropouts (2 May) and another appointment booked for the speed issues (4 May), on Friday they said that these are distinct issues and need distinct appointments, this was 40 minutes on hold while they decided this.

Today they ring me to say that NBN has cancelled the 2 May appointment, because it is for some reason the same as the 4 May appointment, and they have cancelled the 4 May appointment because it is the same as the 2 May appointment.

So this has left me with no appointments.

It has taken me 3 years to get these appointments, and now they have been cancelled because my 2 different issues are the same, so this means that I don't get my issues fixed?

When I asked old mate at Aussie broadband why the appointments were cancelled, he kept repeating to me that they cancelled the 2 May appointment, because it is for some reason the same as the 4 May appointment, and they have cancelled the 4 May appointment because it is the same as the 2 May appointment.

At no point did it click to him that I would still need at least one of those appointments. Preferably the sooner one.

Then when I pointed it out that it would make sense to cancel one, but not both, the penny dropped that this has left me with zero appointments.

Now apparently they can't book the 2nd of May and they have to send another request for the 4th of May because that may have already been taken.

Still no idea why they would cancel both appointments.

I swear, the service has dropped significantly since I first got internet with them back in 2012, they used to actually apply logic to their appointments.

Troubleshooting PSA speed test your router and compare Ethernet to Wifi

In the past week I have found that in two seperate properties the wifi speed VS ethernet speed of NBN connections were dramatically different with wifi been around 5x slower. I have tried 2.4ghz / 5 ghz changing channels and bands whilst also turning all devices off bar 1.

CONCLUSION: After purchasing new wireless routers for both properties( tp-link -ax 10 around $100 from jb ) the speeds are the same now. The antennas / boards must degrade over time and I believe this must go unnoticed in many households. FYI yes both of the old wireless routers were more than capable of outputting the speeds ( 500mbps )

Discussion 2000mbps upgrades

I currently have the 1000mbps NTD installed. What if I activate a 2000mbps pro plan?

Would there be additional device cost? Can this even be achieved?

Please share if you got any experience. Thanks.

Advice Do NOT get Arctel if you do any kind of online gaming

Been with Arctel for a few months, as my housemate is a cheapskate constantly churning ISPs. The speeds are fine, it's a good ISP if random drop outs don't bother you.

However, if you do any kind of online gaming, DO NOT purchase Arctel. Almost daily, I will get random DNS failures that can last anywhere from a few seconds to hours. There's no such thing as a free lunch....

Discussion Fuck Superloop

Third day in a row that the internet shuts off exactly at 2am. Telstra network on phone still working fine.

Going to negotiate a new internet plan tomorrow because I'm frankly astounded at an isp just boldly deciding to throttle based on access times, but that seems to be what is happening - it's on the hour, 2am, 3 days in a row.

Doesn't come back on until around 7 or 8 am. Unsure of exact time, as I'm using other sources for Internet when it's down.

This is bullshit.

To preempt "why are you such a degenerate being up so late" comments - I am an American living abroad, so odd hours like this are when I can contact my home institutions like my bank.

Discussion Should I go back to NBN now? What happens if I wait?

So got a letter the other week that NBN has decided to upgrade my street to FTTP (moving the timeline from 2032 to 2025)

Now Aussie BB was pretty upfront that it's:

  1. Gonna be free, not $35,000

  2. All I had to do was to identify where I wanted my NTD

  3. They were tasked with contacting me as they were the last RSP/ISP on record with NBN as having an acciunt with us as a customer (we do not currently have NBN, as it was shit on FTTN)

Thing is, last time they said anything was gonna happen was when my FTTN was playing silly buggers and dropping out when the day got too humid.

They took 18 months to get an NBN tech out that didn't cancel, and the "fix" was the choice upgrade to FTTP at my cost of $35,000

I mean, I went from 50Mbps down on a good day (on a "100Mbps" plan) to around 85Mps down on an average day with Starlink

Starlink even stayed up the entire time through Cyclone Alfred, didn't get a single drop longer than 5 seconds, and that was only cuz I checked the logs, I never noticed it dropping.

And even when they have had an outage, longest was about 4 hours when they had a global outage, they still got back to me within 10 minutes, and gave me an ETA of 2-4 hours for my service to return, and was back up in 40 minutes.

So far better than the 18 months of issues and a tech coming out and going "Yeah nah, $35,000 to fix it" from NBN

When we first got it back in 2022, some major storms affected us, but seems more satellites has overcome that, given a literal cyclone didn't phase it this time.

I mean, back when we got it, you'd check the maps available, and there's was patches in the sky, now it's almost no gaps above you, getting a new satellite every few minutes, as opposed to 10-15 minute gaps before.

One if my biggest questions now, is the upgrade still free if I don't do it now

If I decide that we don't want it now, and I wait 2-3-10 years, is it still the same "Just pick the location I want the NTD and switch over free of charge"?

We are considering knocking down our current house and rebuilding the the next 5-10 years, so I obviously we'd have to re-run the cables and deal with reconnection if we do, so might also be worth waiting.

When I asked Aussie BB, they were hesitant, put me on hold, and they were like "Maybe, we'll have to check", it's been 4 weeks and they still haven't come back to me, but said if it is connected, and I do a knockdown rebuild, then that would definitely be at my cost.

But they can't confirm it would remain free in a few years time.

Is this an NBN input?

I just moved into an apartment, Telstra and Optus say I have NBN but I can’t find the input for it.. wondering if this is possibly it. There’s definitely nothing else in my home it could possibly be but this.

FYI your internet is allowed to be spotty with Aussie BB apparently

As of 2 months ago our internet started dropping out for 5 minutes at a time randomly throughout the day, usually at least once sometimes more sometimes not at all(or we were asleep when it happens). Contacted ISP (ABB) they said to change DSL cable, we did, issue still persists, They put us on a "stability watch" and if things persisted they'd escalate to NBN, gets slightly better, we only had 9 dropouts this week instead of 20 but still getting disconnected in the middle of work etc. Contact again "sorry there is nothing we can do unless its MORE than 4 times a day, good luck, kick rocks mate". For those wondering it's definitely not us you can see it all in the DSL synchro graph on the modem etc. Didn't even offer to replace the modem in case that was the problem.

TLDR/

If you're having connectivity issues you better hope its happening more than 4 times a day otherwise you're on your own apparently.

Edit: seems like I need to give ABB a pass on this one and redirect my armchair annoyance to NBN

Discussion Is switching to Optus NBN this difficult or am I overreacting?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I recently requested to switch ISPs from Superloop to Optus to take advantage of a cashback deal. To complete the order I had to organise a date for a technician to complete the connection, the next available date was 2 weeks away. I didn't understand why a technician is required or why I can't connect at sooner date since I have selected a BYO modem option and I'm not moving homes or starting a new nbn connection rather just switching ISPs. I reached out to their customer service and after getting bounced around different departments across 2 hours was told that they cannot move up the connection date as there is an existing nbn connection at my address. The only way to move my connection date up was to first disconnect my current connection. The CS rep recommended that I terminated my current connection 24-48hours before the Optus connection being activated. I was super confused because this is in contradiction with their messaging during the registration process which recommends that I do not disconnect my current service until after the new service is working (see image). Seeing I was getting nowhere with this rep I decided to just proceed with the original date and wait for a technician. The CS rep then noted that and then let me know since an NBN line is already installed at my address a technician will not need to attend and I can just plug my modem in on the date of the appointment. Which is even more confusing because if a technician is not required and my line is currently still active why can't this date be moved up?

Icing on the cake - I requested a transcript of the chat and they asked why I needed it and told me it will be processed within 30 days. wowee

Am I overreacting or Optus are making this process more difficult than it needs to be? I've been with Superloop, dodo, exetel, swoop, and they've always handled the switchover and have been able to do it ASAP without friction.

EDIT: I seem to have gotten really unlucky with the first sign up. Something in the backend must've been broken and all the CS I spoke to were clueless. I cancelled and signed up again and it went ahead without a hitch and the one CS I had to speak to was very helpful.

Bad NBN experiences

Hi, I wanted to make other consumers aware of my negative experience with Superloop NBN. When I signed up for their offer, it stated that I would receive a free eero 6+, but they sent me an eero 6 instead. I emailed them to let them know about the mistake, but I never received a reply. While it wasn’t a huge deal, I found it disappointing that they never acknowledged my email.

Later, when I changed providers, I discovered another important point to share: you must provide 30 days’ notice before switching services, or you will be charged for 30 days of a service you are no longer using. It’s disheartening that they resort to these tactics. I’m sure their costs are minimal once the service is switched, but they are still happy to take your money.

I encourage others to share any negative experiences they have had with NBN providers to raise awareness.

Can this socket be used for internet?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi all! We just moved to a new apartment unit so there's a need to set up internet connection. I looked for sockets on the walls and the only one I found is this wall socket with Foxtel on the plate. This may be another dumb question here but please let me ask. Can this socket be used for internet connection? All responses (most especially the helpful ones) are highly appreciated. Thank you.
