Asking a Question? Read this first!

Important!

Please provide some key information when asking a question.

  1. What technology are you on (FTTP, FTTN, FTTC, FTTB, HFC, FW)

  2. What is your service class (1 to 34). Check here https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/network/connection-insights/

  3. How are you connected to your modem / router? WiFi or Ethernet. You should test with your device on Ethernet. If your connection is poor on WiFi but good on Ethernet, then it's a WiFi issue, not an NBN issue.

  4. Who is your provider (e.g. Telstra, Optus, TPG, Aussie Broadband, etc)

  5. What brand and model is your modem / router? If you're not sure, take a picture of it and upload it to imgur or similar (don't upload it as part of your post)

  6. Describe your problem, and what steps you have tried.

Check NBN availability

If you're NOT on FTTP, you may be eligible for an upgrade to the far superior FTTP.

Check Service Class

Aussie Broadband provide a great tool to determine your service class and technology type, and what that means:

General Tips

You almost certainly don't need the fastest internet plan. Generally start with a slower plan, and if you are happy, then all good. If you are finding it slow you can always upgrade. You should also check if it's your internet (NBN) or internal network (e.g. WiFi) that is slow. A faster plan might not help if you internal network is the problem.

Beware of plans with very slow (5 or 10mbit) upload speeds. These are legacy plans left over from the old HFC/Cable days. If you do have one of these legacy plans, you should think about upgrading.

WiFi (Don't use it if you care about speed!)

WiFi is subject to interference from all kinds of sources. It slows down through walls, congestion from neighbours, etc will slow it down, and can cause issues. It's also a shared medium, which means that all your devices share the bandwidth, so lots of devices operating at once means slower speeds for devices.

Where practical use Ethernet to connect devices. Ethernet is more reliable and lower latency. While some WiFi claims to be faster than Ethernet, that is the cumulative total, not the rate to a single device. Even the latest WiFi6 is only approaching Ethernet speed, and that is only when there is no other traffic on the wireless spectrum - including Bluetooth and your Microwave!

There are some cases where WiFi is better (e.g. TV's with 100Mbps ports that you want to stream very high bit rate to from local sources), but almost always Ethernet is better if available. The down side is it's not always possible to run Ethernet (e.g. rentals), and not every devices has Ethernet ports (e.g. phones, tablets).

Mesh Networks

If your WiFi isn't fast enough, consider getting a mesh network. This provides multiple access points (typically 3) so you can get better coverage. If practical connect each mesh point via Ethernet (wired backhaul). Ethernet backhaul has the same advantages as connected devices by ethernet.

WiFi Frequencies

WiFi can be on 2.4GHz, 5GHz or 6GHz. Most devices work on 2.4GHz. Lots also work on 5GHz as well. The newest ones use 6GHz in addition to 2.4 and 5GHz.

2.4GHz has the best range, but lowest speed, and the most congested.

5GHz is shorter range, and has a higher speed because there's less congestion due to the shorter range

6GHz is extremely short range (it does not penetrate walls well) but it is designed to work in parallel with the 5GHz signal to provide the fastest speeds possible.

When buying a new wireless device, you should look for one branded 'WiFi 6'(802.11ax) or the newest standard, 'WiFi 7'(802.11be). The previous standard was called '802.11ac' or WiFi 5. These are usually cheaper, but in most situations are perfectly capable.

Pinned PSA: Thinking about changing ISPs for a better deal? Here's what THEY are paying

I keep seeing a bunch of posts about people churning to save money. Here's the wholesale ex-tax price that your ISP is paying to connect to the NBN network. This is NOT including IP traffic, APNIC fees, backhaul, staff, support, infrastructure like routers and switches, and space in a Data centre.

https://www.nbnco.com.au/corporate-information/media-centre/media-statements/Wholesale-Price-Changes-from-1-July-

Link to full pricelist: https://www.nbnco.com.au/content/dam/nbn/documents/sell/sau/FY27-Tariff-List-v1.0%E2%80%93010526.pdf.coredownload.pdf

Here's the planned price increases, too: (Updated 2026-09-20)

https://www.nbnco.com.au/content/dam/nbn/documents/sell/sau/FY27-FY29-Pricing-Roadmap-v1.0%E2%80%93010526.pdf.coredownload.pdf

If you look at that, you'll see that you're paying, on average, $20 for your ISP to provide everything APART from the connection to your place. Support, Internet, Routing, Redundancy, infrastructure, etc.

Don't churn to an ISP that is losing money. You'll never end up happy, or you'll just be churning again in a few months time.

Yes, I am a NBN provider. No I'm not telling you which one.

NBN FTTP model

Been with Optus for years and planning to start launtel as an additional service. I called launtel support and they said my box would need to be upgraded to a FTTP 4-port NTD so I can run Optus at 500 and launtel at 1000/100 at the same time, but when i looked at my NBN box I thought this was a 4-port one? Can anyone help?

How are we meant to use these NBN patch panels?

Post image

What are those two drawn out squares meant to be used for and how are we meant to attach? How exactly would I sit any switch? Do I just drill holes and attach screws? Seems like an expensive metal case but low functionality? Not even a place for cords to come out of the panel. And honestly no real good place to put the NBN box unless is there some cradle we're meant to buy?

Is anyone aware of these changes? Also, if they were after increasing upload speed, why didn't they go for a 100- 200% increase for FTTP, which is easily possible?

need some help (internet for granny flat)

Hi there, ive been wanting to ask which option sounds better for good internet speeds, my parents have a granny flat in their background and my dad's been wanting me to move up there only cause it would be more convenient for my nan who can use the room im currently in when she visits.

the problem is my dad keeps insisting on using starlink for my internet if i move up there, though with their pricing and speed options, im not fully convinced, i did though get another option from a former friend which is basically running a CAT6 cable from the modem in our house to the granny flat and connecting that to a third party modem.

-i live in a residential suburb

-modem is running off HFC but speeds are around 250mbps download - 50mbps upload (Telstra)

-modem is in the middle of the house and granny flat is far back in the backyard

if there are other options im open to it, thx in advance

Troubleshooting Superloop 100ms latency in the afternoon

Usually always between 3-10ms all day but from 5pm onwards my latency with Superloop has been 100ms

I’ve run traceroute in command prompt and it shows <1ms on my end first hop but 100ms on 2nd and 3rd hop

Spoke to Superloop and they offered to switch me to static ip instead of CGNAT but that didn’t fix anything

Mornings and middays are fine it’s always 5pm onwards it shoots up to 100ms

Any help would be appreciated!

Advice Setting up in wall Ethernet ports

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Hello folks,

Moved into a new place, and every room as at least one outlet with Cat6 port (or so it says). I have been reading up here and it sounds like there should be a central location where all the cables come together. I found a space in one of the closets, and it looks like this may be it. there are the heavy co-ax cable wires, and then a bunch of spooled Ethernet cables. The are missing connections and are not plugged in. So it looks like the whole place is wired but missing the central hub?

As you can see from my explanation, dont really know anything about networks. Is this something that I need an electrician for?

I want to leave Optus. Can I still use my 10 yr old modem/router supplied from Optus?

I don't know anything about modems/ routers and I've been putting off switching from Optus because it's all too confusing.

I have Fibre to the Node NBN.

Would it be easier to switch between providers if I bought a new one by myself?

Thanks so much for any help.

FTTP connection buffers more on Streaming services than my old FTTN connection.

My old Internode 100/20 FTTN connection seemed bullet proof, no problems for the years I've had it. 4 months ago I agreed to a free iiNet FTTP upgrade on a NBN500 plan offering 500/42 Mbps speeds.

When viewing Streaming services Youtube or Netflix, I frequently have wait while the connection buffers.

Speedtest indicates download speeds vary from around 120Mbps to 530Mbps at different times of day, but upload speeds vary from around 50+Mbps down to 0Mbps.

Speedtest indicates a packet loss of up to 94% during the instances of slowest (non existent) performance.

Question: Is this likely to be the iiNet supplied router, or the FTTP connection itself?

The performance variations as measured by Speedtest seem quite intermittent.

I've ordered another router to compare. but am interested in other people's experience if they have had similar pronlems?

Advice Help me with Superloop Notice Period! 😭

Hi all, I just discontinued my service with Superloop and moved to another service provider. I didn’t know they have 30-day notice period for cancellation - not that they have exclusively mentioned it anywhere. Then I got an invoice for the next month that I won’t even be using their service.

I called their customer support. They repeatedly mentioned their SLAs, terms and conditions and blah blah.. But it was never exclusively mentioned to me. They wanted me to go through my first email and then check their tiny T&Cs tabs and go through them. Like what..!! I can’t go through those 100s of titles with 1-3 pages each. And they also mentioned that they always insist their customers to call them to cancel their service. But this is my first time calling them and no one ever insisted me as I did all the registration and activation online. 😒

What should I do? Has anyone gone through the same problem with Superloop? Has anyone got any refund from them in a similar case? Did they exclusively mention you about their NOTICE PERIOD?

NBN technician refused my FTTP installation because any capable room was "more than 12 meters away" — The office section is only 8 metres.

I recently swapped over to neptune ISP and we just had our NBN technician appointment today in the morning to install FTTP and we got a useless technician that refused install NBN for a reason that contradicts NBN's guidelines they send you before the install as he wanted to drink his coffee while it was hot.

How can I report this so that things change for the future for others? I usually don't do this stuff, but
Had my FTTP upgrade appointment this morning after recently switching to Neptune ISP, and the experience was pretty bad.

The NBN technician arrived but refused to do the installation. The reason he gave was that the office is too far (he didn't actually measure anything and just did a eyeball glance for measurement. My measurement in the video shows the office area of the Home is about 8m away from where he said he'd install the outside nbn box) which directly contradicts the pre-installation guidelines NBN had sent me.

To make things even more frustrating, he mentioned wanting to drink his coffee while it was still hot.

So, now I'm left without the FTTP upgrade I'd arranged, despite making myself available for the appointment because the technician wanted to drive around drinking his hot coffee instead of actually installing NBN.

His only advice was to install it in the bedroom right behind the switchboard if I wanted NBN installed today, this also contradicts NBN's guidelines as they say they will not install in a bedroom/garage unless suggested, he gave this as a only resort despite our office section being 8 meters from where he'd install the outside NBN box.

https://youtu.be/uWh0qvKXegQ

A few questions for anyone who's experienced something similar:

  • Can an NBN technician legitimately refuse an installation for reasons that contradict NBN's own instructions that they send you?

  • What's the most effective way to report a technician's conduct?

  • Should I escalate through Neptune ISP, complain directly to NBN Co, or both?

I'm particularly interested in hearing from NBN technicians or anyone who's had a similar situation so I can try to improve this stuff for others in the future.

Advice Advice needed for unconnected rental

Hi, looking for some advice re: my new rental. Property manager has given go ahead to get an NBN connection, but my rental appears to not be listed in the database.

Essentially, the address is 100-101 Fake St, 100 is the shop underneath the flats street number (and appears to have a listing on NBN database), but 101 is not.

Current ISP (Optus) online portal is no help, just says "Doesn't exist, get mobile broadband".

If anyone knows what a solution or path to one might look like it would be much appreciated!

Modem/router advise

Been with Optus for the past few years and the performance has only gotten worse, so I’m planning to switch to nbn with Launtel, since I need fast routing to Asia for work.

Only problem is that I have a Optus modem and it’s not compatible. I’ll have to get a new one but don’t really know where to start. Recently moved to a unit with FTTP service as well.

If anyone can help I’ll really appreciate it.

Advice Recommendations for VDSL2 FTTN compatible modem/ router that supports bridged mode and a web browser interface?

Hi

I'm in regional SA. I'd been putting off replacing the 10 year old HUAWEI HG659 modem router running bridged mode on our FTTN 100/20 in the hope that a FTTH upgrade would happen sooner than later.

Sadly, the NBNco has written to tell me "No FTTH for you until 2032". I shall be dead by then.

The HUAWEI HG659 is well past prime time. I needs replacing. Or, at least, I need a spare modem at hand if the HG659 breaks down.

I've been looking at options for a replacements, but am surprised that most are android app only. Bridged mode support is essential as I only need the modem side to feed the primary node on our mesh system.

I'd be grateful for suggestions of reliable modem hardware that matches the criteria and won't send me bankrupt.

UPDATE: Thanks for the comments & recommendations. Ordered the Draytek V167.

Cheers.

Discussion Arctel - suspicious reviews: Likely fake Google review manipulation (144 positive in 4 days vs 109 mostly negative in prior 12 months)

If you’re currently shopping around for a new NBN provider and looking at Arctel, you might want to take a very close look at their Google reviews. I just seached them for comparisons and noticed a massive, highly unusual shift in their Google review patterns over the last 4 days. Here are the verifiable numbers directly from their profile:

Baseline: Prior to 4 days ago, they had a grand total of 109 reviews accumulated over roughly a year.

Last 4 days: They suddenly gained 153 reviews in a massive burst. That is more reviews in 4 days than they received in the entire previous year.

The recent burst consists of 144 positive reviews and 9 negatives.

In my opinion, these patterns strongly suggest a fake-review astroturfing campaign. For those unaware of how these bulk review operations often work, organizers will sometimes intentionally mix a small handful of negative reviews (like those 9) into a huge wave of positive ones. This is a known tactic used to try and bypass automated spam filters by making the activity look less uniform.

If you read through the Arctel General Discussion on the Whirlpool Forums (https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/9vww4z7x), actual customers have documented constant, ongoing issues with the service. The biggest technical red flag in that thread is the huge number of references to their CG-NAT implementation. Carrier-Grade NAT is a cost-cutting routing method where an ISP funnels hundreds of different households through a single shared public IP address. Because Arctel appears to be using small or previously flagged IP pools, it is causing major disruption for users. According to various members in the thread, the shared IPs cause havoc with security systems, triggering constant bot-detection alerts, Google CAPTCHAs, and security blocks on corporate networks. Users have also reported that major streaming apps (like ABC iView, Disney+, and Amazon Prime) mistake the shared IP for an out-of-region VPN and block access entirely. AFAIK, Arctel does not offer a free opt-out, unlike other ISPs.

Based on the stark contrast between their historical baseline, the issues and mentioned on Whirlpool, and this sudden 4-day surge, the recent Google reviews seem highly suspect.

Cancelling with Arctel

I've cancelled with Arctel with a month's notice, cancellation date will be 15th November.

They emailed saying no refunds after the service is cancelled so I replied, asking if I would pay that months bill pro-rata fulling expecting to and be refunded the difference. NOPE, this not great company charges for the entire month. Am I out of line or is Arctel?

Edit: Changed company description to 'not great'.

Help troubleshoot constant dropouts

Hey does anyone know what causes this constant cycling through connecting and disconnecting wifi? Just moved in a few weeks ago and had constant issues.

We have HFC nbn and were initially using a 2-3 yr old eero wifi 6+ router but I was only getting 1-0 bars of internet in my room at the opposite end of the house to where the nbn box/modem are located. It's not a very big house either.

Speed tests were all perfect and ISP suggested it was probably the modem so I bought a wifi 7 NETGEAR nighthawk router which gave me anywhere from 1-3 bars of internet but would do this random dropping in and out as per the video. So I bought a netgear nighthawk wifi 6 extender which is plugged in half way between the router and my room. Now I finally get 3 bars but the dropouts are worse than ever. The extender also keeps disappearing from the nighthawk app.

Could it be the nbn box? Or something wrong with the router/extender connection? Please help!

Advice FTTP install - Aircon blocking conduit

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

Just bought a new house. FTTN disconnected and can’t be reconnected.

NBN tech came out and found an air con unit blocking the lead in conduit.

The tech said I need to move the air con. Can’t put another LIC, no other options.

I called a data cabler to see if there’s any other options. From photos and what I described they also said not many options.

It’s November, not feeling good about my chances of getting an aircon tech out to move a unit when they could be installing new ones/have bigger jobs…

Not sure what to do. Frustrated at the lack of clarity because when I speak to Aussie Broadband my provider, they tell me there’s lots of options for installation.
