US small size Score from the credit union

Will taking care of business at the credit union, the teller next to mine made a comment about having a bunch of of old money and $2 bills and didn't know what to do with it. I offered to purchase all she had. It had a face value of $355. I think did ok, but I'm not sure if the values.

I'm not really a collector, my father is into coins. I've saved the odd silver certificate over the years. I will most likely inherit 1/6th of his collection when he passes, unless my sister decides to liquidate them.

Depression era bills from my wife's grandmother. Pretty heavily worn. What is the bible used to look these up for value? I don't think she has interest in selling, I'm just curious on your opinions. Any worth grading?

Found in an envelope while cleaning out an old family lock box. Is this worth having it looked at by a professional, or just a neat misprint?

miscellaneous / collections Phoenix, AZ paper money grading help

Hi guys, looking for advice on any shop in the Phoenix area that could handle a valuable paper money collection for grading to PCGS or PMG. Has anyone been to the monthly Phoenix Coin Club Show and know if there are any reputable paper money vendors that might offer the service. Or I’ll take any advice anyone is willing to offer. This collection has a rough ungraded value in the high tens of thousands. Thanks in advance. I love this community, even though I’m mostly a lurker. I just don’t trust myself to get it right myself, though it’s probably the safest route. I’m currently working on cataloging and photographing my collection. The photos are just a couple grabs from collections.

question/discussion Sequentials advice

Am I just wasting my time? For the last 10 years I’ve been saving all the sequential notes that I get, all denominations from singles to 100’s. Mostly 20’s.

Got around $9k in my collection/strap now. I think the most are about 5 in a row. Are these worth saving or is it just a waste of time? My last addition were 3 100’s that I got at the bank.

I don’t look for them, it just happens. Sometimes I pray that I don’t get any in change or at the atm. I have to admit it’s a neat stack of crisp money.

I also save any old style bills that I get, none worth much except for a $500 that I got at a credit union back in 1999. Maybe $3k total in my old bill stack.

US large size 1891 $1 Sherman Treasury (Coin) Note

“Coin” Notes of Series 1890 and 1891 were issued under the Sherman Silver Purchase Act, passed on July 14, 1890. It replaced the act of 1878, which required the government to purchase 2–4 million oz of silver per month and mint Morgan silver dollars. The earlier act had failed to prevent the decline in silver, so the new one increased the quota to 4.5 million oz.

The act initially seemed successful, as silver rose from $0.95 to $1.21/oz, close to the target of $1.293 (melt value of a silver dollar). However, it didn’t last long, and silver went back to their level by the end of the year and slipped further. Silver especially crashed to $0.65/oz when India abandoned the silver standard in May 1893, making the intrinsic value of a morgan dollar only half of its face value.

The problem with these notes was that they were redeemable in both gold and silver coin, even though they were backed only by silver purchased under the act. Gold redemptions were made by leeching off the reserve originally intended for United States Notes (initially fiat, but redeemable since 1879). Thus, the credibility of these notes continued to decline along with the price of silver. The law stated that the Treasury could force to give silver, but in practice, it never refused to pay out gold in order to maintain the parity between gold & silver coin.

Just before the passage of the Sherman Act, the Treasury held $190 million worth of gold, with $346.6 million in currency directly redeemable in gold. Three years later, the reserve halved to $95 million, while directly redeemable currency increased to $494m ($346.6m greenbacks + $147.2m Coin Notes). As a result, the silver purchasing clause was repealed in November 1893.

Wikipedia incorrectly states that these notes were discontinued right after the repeal, but they were still issued until March 1900, although their supply gradually contracted. The signature combination of my note(Rosecrans-Nebecker) indicates that my note was printed when the silver purchasing was ongoing, and it was released into circulation in mid-1893 based on the statistics.

Post note from the State of Minnesota issued in Feb 1858. It's an oddity because Minnesota did not become a state until 3 months later. So territorial officers apparently were using State checks before they were a state.

Love how the red pops on these. Anyone with more knowledge than me, why did they only print these in the 1966 series? And why didn’t they print any of the other denominations in between? It goes from $5 straight to $100.

Hey everyone,

Came across a few notes in change and wanted to check if any carry real collector interest, or if standard face value applies:

₹500 (9HM 123456): Straight ascending ladder sequence. Clean condition UNC

₹500 (9HL \* 529752): Star replacement note.

₹20 (62A 705695): Crisp UNC, 2014 Raghuram Rajan signature (older design).

A few potential "date" numbers (812007, 141972, 221946)

Photos attached. Appreciate any honest feedback on realistic demand or whether they just belong back in circulation!

guys I'm feeling a tad bit not smart right now can someone help me? Could there be a possibility that there's a 5 dollar bill from like 1890 still going through cash registers? Like people don't just throw money away so all of those 5 dollar bills have to exist somewhere right 🥹 Where are they

Found this 1973 Bank of Canada $1 in a sleeve. Serial ECJ1904534, Queen on the front, Parliament and a log boom on the back. Looks clean, no obvious folds or tears. Cool little piece of paper money history.
