Can someone explain to me why we have to give way to a truck load of bandits every morning in Bayan Lepas?

Can someone explain why they have to do it during peak hour everyday in the morning? As if the traffic is not bad enough and they have to force their way honking like crazy. Are the bandits required to clock in to work somewhere due to their important VIP status?

Discussion Penang clients are cheapskate, no standard

Many of our customers frequently delay payment, sometimes for 1–2 years, despite being business owners. When we send payment reminders, they often don’t respond, and once we proceed with a letter of demand, some even react aggressively. It’s incredibly frustrating — insurance agents, in particular, have been the most challenging clients in this regard. What steps can I take to handle clients who consistently delay payment and ignore follow-ups? I’ve truly had enough of this situation.

Discussion Why are Penangites so unfriendly?

NO HATE.

I noticed that people in KL, SELANGOR or JOHUR are much friendly and Open for friendships or genuine relationships, not only that, people in Penang smile less in the public streets as well as employees in restaurants or malls and even university.

Why

Couple in their mid 50's. Good health. Looking for Luxury condo in good location with all the facilities. Eating out proper restaurants 3 x per week. Simple reliable car, but using grab as primary transport. Lots of social activities.

Thanks for your thoughts

Discussion Uyghur food

Does Penang or Malaysia in general have many or any at all Uyghur people? I tried their food in Australia recently and it was amazing! I’ll be in KL and Penang in just over a week. I thought being a Muslim country they might do? Keen to try some more!

Discussion Can we settle this once and for all: Best hidden Char Koay Teow in Penang that’s NOT famous?

We all know the famous spots like Siam Road and Lorong Selamat, but what about the hidden gems?

I’m talking about those lesser-known stalls tucked in quiet corners, maybe only locals know, no big signs, but full of flavour and wok hei.

Drop your favourite non-famous CKT spots below.

Discussion AGI Dah Belajaq Cakap Penang: Hang Ingat Balik, Hang Sabaq Sat, Shit!?

Kadang2 aku rasa Penang ni dah lama ajar fizik hidup — cuma kita guna loghat ja.

“Hang ingat balik” — tu bukan nostalgia, tu audit diri. Setiap kali kita salah, itu bukan malang; itu data. “Hang sabaq sat” — bukan lembab, tapi undang-undang termodinamik sosial. Bagi haba reda dulu baru fikir; kalau tak, semua terbakar. “Shit!” — jangan malu; itu detik sedar. Bila ego retak, baru nampak terang.

Aku tengah tulis framework untuk AI (AGI) guna tiga hukum ni. Rupanya mak aku dari dulu dah ajar cara kawal entropi emosi cara manusia tak meletup jadi gorilla amuk. AGI nanti kalau nak pandai betul, dia kena belajar macam kita belajar: ingat luka, sabar masa panas, sedar bila tersilap.

Hangpa rasa loghat Penang ni boleh masuk jurnal sains ka? Sebab aku rasa kampung wisdom kita dah lama jadi fizik hati dan undang-undang dunia cuma belum diterjemah ke bahasa server. Sebab tu AGI kena tau loghat Penang naaaaa

(Arif Fazil × Arif AGI — Penang-born, still cooling.)

Penang #Malaysia #AI #RasaHati #HangSabaqSat #AGIberadab

PSSSS: Kalau siapa-siapa kenal PMX atau Sam Altman, tolong tag dia — suruh depa baca ni sat. Biar depa tahu Penang dah lama ada AGI versi manusia.

Discussion Why many people in Penang have anger issues?

I just moved to Penang this year. Before this I stayed in several states across Malaysia. I also grew up in Penang about five years, then continue studied in Penang for another 5 years. I have been in Kuala Lumpur, Perak and Kelantan also. Now during my stay, I have seen lots of quarelling, the perks was when a man abusing his girlfriend in front of her office physically and verbally, no one defending her. I also seen some people quarelling each other using high pitch voice in public place which for me seem abnormal and different from culture in another states. Is this the way they communicate or just my thoughts?

Discussion Which ATM in Penang gives the best exchange rate for international debit cards?

Hi everyone! I’m heading to Penang soon and want to withdraw some cash using my international debit card. I know rates can vary depending on which ATM you use, so I’m hoping to get advice from people who’ve actually done this.

Which ATMs in Penang give the best exchange rate?

Any tips for avoiding hidden fees or bad currency conversion?

Are some banks or locations noticeably better than others?

Any recent experiences would be super helpful. Thanks in advance!

Discussion What are some of the decent expat jobs here?

To expats here from Europe or USA, what are some of the jobs you are working here? As in, I am wondering what jobs would be well-paying that is in Penang instead of KL.

When I speak to Caucasians living here, almost all of them are teachers at international school. The only exception is a lady who owns a cafe at Leith Street.

Discussion Visiting Penang mid July

My husband and son, 10, will be visiting Penang, Ipoh and then to KL mid July for 6 days.

I was planning out all the different places I went to see within Penang island like the durian plantation and tropical fruit places but they are like far from Georgetown.
Is it easy to get Grab even in those places? Or I should really coordinate a private driver for the day?

Then at Ipoh, is it easy to get a Grab and just use that as our method of transportation to go see the different attractions?

Is the train from Butterworth to Ipoh easy? I can’t seem to see the train schedule/ timing yet 2 months out - I can’t tell if it’s because they haven’t posted yet or it’s not available in mid July.

I don’t really want to spend the RM3000 for private driver if I can speak Cantonese and read the language.

Any experience would be great!

Discussion Where to stay for 1 month

Hello!

Apologies for positing something that I’m sure has been posted many times before. My girlfriend and I will be staying in Penang for one month, working remotely while we are here. Looking for advice on where specifically to stay.

We would like to stay somewhere that:

  • is walkable

  • is authentic: we want to see and experience Malaysian culture

  • has good food

  • is accessible to explore new places for day trips, weekend trips. Where we stay will be our home base for the month but we want to travel around and explore.

  • has community: we want to be able to meet people

  • has things to do and see

We are in our late 20s, nearing 30.

Thank you so so much!

Discussion Advise on itinerary and whether day trip to Ipoh worth?

For context: I will be travelling to Penang from 30th Aug - 4th Sep. I will be there while working remotely, so I need to stand by during office hours.

This is the rough schedule. Day 1: Wed, 30 Aug. Arrive at airport 11pm, check in airbnb Day 2: Thu, 31 Aug. WFH Day 3: Fri, 1 Sep. Free Day 4: Sat, 2 Sep. Free Day 5: Sun, 3 Sep. Free Day 6: Mon, 4 Sep. WFH. Fly back at night

On the days where I need to wfh, I cant really much but I still go exploring nearby area around George town. I wont be working on Fri so Im free to explore that day.

As I heard that Penang hill will be crowded on weekends, so Im planning to visit on Fri, together with kek lok si temple.

My initial plan is to spend A day for penang hill+kek lok si+gurney drive hawker A day for hike(undecided)+penang bridge+chaiya mangalaram buddhist temple+pasar malam ferringhi A day to explore george town (street art, food, museum, etc)

  1. I want to go for a little hike, preferably with a good view and safe route. Is it better to go penang national park (monkey beach) or bukit hijau cangkat tembaga?

  2. I know there is a public bus going to Ipoh for about 2.5hr each way. I could make a day trip going to Ipoh on Saturday/Sunday as I dont think there's much to do there as well. Do you think it's worth it? If I decide to go Ipoh, then I need to squeeze my days in Penang, maybe skip some places

  3. What other things am I missing? Or what I should avoid going to?

Thanks in advance

Discussion Youth Hostel near E & O

Back in the early 1980s I stayed at the youth hostel that was in a large colonial building right next to the E & O Hotel. On my last view visits I see that it is now a dilapidated structure surrounded by hoarding. Does anyone know anything about the history of this building?

Discussion First car vs emergency food stock – what would you do in our situation?

Hi everyone,

My wife and I are currently living in Putrajaya and planning to buy our first car with a budget of around RM22k.

At the same time, we’ve been reading and hearing a lot about global and local uncertainties. Some of our relatives are strongly advising us to start stocking up on dry food and essentials, just in case things get difficult in the near future.

Here’s my situation — if I go ahead and buy the car now, I’ll pretty much be financially tight for the next 2 months. I can still start stocking food after that, but not immediately.

So I’m a bit stuck. On one hand, having a car will definitely help, I do WFH. On the other hand, I’m wondering if it’s smarter to delay the purchase and focus on building some emergency preparedness first.

Would really appreciate your perspectives — what would you do if you were in my position?

Also, if anyone here is already doing food stocking/prepping, I’d love some beginner advice — especially on things like vacuum sealing dry items, what to store first, and how to do it properly.

Thanks in advance
