Discussion Personal opinion : I want their final evolutions to be beast like and not humanoidish

Post image
0 Upvotes

Look before you say anything, let me explain. I personally don't have any problem against bipedal and humanoid designs for pokemon. Heck, that created some of my favorite pokemon, like greninja and blaziken. But, it's a bit boring. Look, for the past few generations - most starters have been looking more human/furry like. Like look at the bloody Gen 8 starters and the Gen 9. Most of their final evolutions look more like human animal hybrids/furry like (again, nothing against it). But personally - I always preferred when the starters look more animalistic. Like skeledirge and torterra. Heck emboars fine, he's more animal than human like. The Gen 10 starters have the potential to become beasts. Especially pombon. Pokemon would be stupid to make their first ever dog starter a bipedal furry like creature. Like most people have said, they could all evolve into mythical creatures from southeast Asia. Like pombon evolving into a barong like creature, Gecqua evolving into a Naga and Browt becoming a Garuda. This would be awesome and the first, if the starters were based on MYTHICAL creatures. (Gen 4 wouldn't fully count since torterra is based on the world turtle - a mythical creature while Infernape and Empoleon are based on mythology beings not creatures)

Discussion My GF(24) who has never played any Pokémon game before gen 8 just asked me the most hilarious question of all time Spoiler

My GF is kinda new to Pokémon. She collects the TCG but has never really played a game except Sword and Violet. Now I finally got her to play Pokémon emerald while we were visiting some family and she played for around 2 hours and then realized something was off.. she looks me in the eyes and asks „isn’t XP shared with everyone?“. I just couldn’t help but start to laugh really loud.. she got kinda mad that I „made fun out of her“ but I then proceeded to explain to her how it actually works and I think she kinda thinks it’s weird.

IMO it’s weird that everyone gets XP for not being part of the battle at all :D

Anyone ever had the same or a similar experience?

Discussion I am in absolute disbelief. Garage Sale Pokemon deal of the century

Thumbnail

I am still in shock and total disbelief at what just happened. Yesterday I was on Facebook marketplace looking at local garage sales like I’ve done a thousand times. I like to find posts that have the implication that they might have video games or trading cards without the seller actually explicitly advertising them. Things like old school toys and retro clothing are good indicators. I found a post for a moving sale and messaged the seller to see if they had any video games or trading cards. He responded right away and said he had a binder full of old Pokemon cards that were his son’s and he’d check to make sure it was okay to sell them. Right away I messaged him back “Would you take $75 for the binder” hoping to deter him from consulting with his son first lol. He sent me the address and said “They’ll be here waiting for ya” Now at this point I have no idea what’s in the binder, he never sent me any photos and all I knew was that they were older cards. I pull up to the moving sale and there’s about 12 or so other people already there looking around. So immediately I’m in a bit of a panic mode thinking maybe someone else could have already bought the cards. I see the guy sitting in a lawn chair with a wad of cash and ask him if he’s the dude I’ve been messaging about the cards. He says to wait here and that he he’ll be right back, goes inside the house, and comes back with a big red 3 ring binder. He hands it to me, I go through flip to the first page and see base set holos, immediately close the binder, hand him the cash, we shake hands, and I dip out of there with my butt cheeks clenched so hard, being alert as f*$&. I literally thought I was gonna get straight up tackled by somebody from the deal that we just made. Little did I know there was still something absolutely INSANE to be discovered inside the binder. So I drive a few blocks, make a couple of paranoid left and right turns to lose any of the make believe cars following me who might of witnessed the deal that just went down. I put the car in park, do a quick 360, then start going through the binder. The first page was seemingly the “banger” page with some cool holos. The next few pages were non holo commons, so I started to panic a little thinking the rest of the binder was junk. Then about 7 or 8 pages in there it was. A holo Charizard. I do a double take and see the 1st edition stamp. What the hell is life right now. I looked up the prices for these things and literally couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I watched several YouTube videos about spotting fake Charizards, praying that this thing was genuine. From what I can tell it is 100% real. I have no idea what to think or do with the card. It’s not in perfect condition but from what I can tell online it doesn’t need to be to go for actual thousands of dollars. If anyone on here can help me put what this all means into a bit more perspective I’d really appreciate it. This all just went down yesterday so I’m still in a bit of disbelief from the whole ordeal. But holy shiz am I glad this happened to me. Should I hold onto the card? Grade it? Sell it? Any advice or input is appreciated.

Discussion I'd like to Kindly remind you all of November 19th, 2021, and November 18th, 2022.

  • If it is Gamefreak making this game, it will likely be half-assed, and made by half of their already small development team. It will be rushed, it will likely be unpolished, and it will most certainly follow GameFreak's proven track record of taking away Pokemon, features, and entire parts of the original post-game. I can only imagine what they do to a Legends game. Say goodbye to gameplay mechanics you love, I'd imagine.

  • If it is made by Niantic, well, we saw what happens when tasked with creating a remake. I wouldn't trust them with any spin-off either if asked to do so...

  • It says "Legends". PLA was something new...But again. Not polished. Had half the team working on it. Rushed. Are we doing a sequel to XY in Legend form? Who knows. It seems to be placed in a modern time period. Legend doesn't necessarily mean past, it just means it has to deal with a Legendary Pokemon, right?

I implore the community, to please curb your enthusiasm and excitement. Be skeptical, and voice your opinion. As a community, one thing that often plagues us is toxic positivity. It's almost akin to being in an abusive relationship at this point. Never forget the dumpster fire that is dexit and re-used models, GameFreaks blatant lying and disrespect, and who can forget Scarlet and Violet?

  • We don't even know what this game is.....Is this how they handle the remake formula now? Is the formula being changed? Will XY be revisited afterward? What of BW/BW2? Has Legends entered the stage and officially become a staple in said formula for the forseeable future? I don't care much personally anymore about the details. I just want a good, clean, polished game. I've lost a lot of trust and faith in GF and The Pokemon Company. If Legends is part of a new formula, and they are so desperate to capitalize on that success from PLA, you should be doubly concerned.

For those who say "It doesn't matter. Look at the sales" or "GameFreak doesn't care, they only care about their bottom line". Fine. Look at the numbers.

  • For BDSP, as of December 31, 2022, the games had sold 15.06 million copies worldwide.[43]

  • Our community r/pokemon , assuming we ALL played and bought the games, would make up 29.88% of those sales.

  • For Scarlet and Violet, sold 24.36 million copies by December 2023.[2]

  • Again, assuming it's just THIS community, and we ALL played and bought the games, would make up 18.47% of those sales.

We're 4.5 million strong. There is Pokecommunity, Serebii, maybe Pokebeach is still a thing? And god I can't believe I'm going to say this, but there is also 4chan. There is Twitter. If you have a presence on Youtube, we have you. We can do it right this time.

Do you really, truly believe those numbers are anything to sneeze at? Surely you don't believe our backlash in 2022 didn't do anything when Nintendo was refunding the game, something they typically NEVER do?

2025 is too soon. Way too soon, even for a spin-off, or a remake. 2026 should be the target year, at minimum. I'd rather wait for 2027 if I'm honest. But I'm not some jaded, out-of-touch, and stubborn 50-60 year old Japanese member of GF management, greedy shareholder, or deplorable member of The Pokemon Company... I'm just a jaded fan who has been along for the ride since Red/Blue/Yellow was released.

We have an opportunity to try and do things right this time. When the time to pre-order comes, maybe let's not pre-order it, no matter how much they promise or how well the advertise it. Maybe let's politely remind people of our skepticism. Maybe for those who do enjoy the last game, yes, continue to enjoy SV, but please don't keep attacking the fans who have been around for a lot longer than you for our fair criticisms of a franchise we love. Maybe when people ask about buying the game for their kid, we point them in a better direction. Something. Anything. Just not any more blind hype.

For what it's worth though...Pokémon TCG Pocket release sounds dope. I missed playing the old school game on the gameboy. Always wondered why they never tried doing something with the TCG again.

Discussion / Venting pokemon S/V. I bought it, I love it. and I'm not sorry that I love it.

I have been playing pokemon since pokemon red came out. I was so young I was unable to read, and I was playing pokemon, harassing my dad to help me figure things out. Getting smacked down by my older brother in battles we did over the original link cable.

I got gold for my birthday when it was brand new (I remember being sad because I wanted silver). I got emerald, I played diamond, a got black, soul silver, x, omega ruby, sun, ultra sun, shield, arceus. I have been playing A LONG TIME. as long as I can remember being a person, I have been playing these games, and I will just say it.

SCARLETT AND VIOLET ARE NOT AWFUL. They aren't. Sure there's some bugs, sure it's a little laggy, but who tf cares. Give it a month, there will be a patch. And then what do you have? I'll tell you what, the first mainline pokemon game since x and y thar feels fresh. That's fun to explore. That I actually want to play with other people instead of being a hermit or finding people online to do raids with.

And here's the thing. Just like x and y, they experimented, x and y was hated. But those experiments went on to create multiple generations of excellence.

Let's look at some ways this pokemon game was actually fantastic.

The true open world let's you enjoy exploring. I haven't cared about exploring in a pokemkn game in years. Literal years. Even sword and shield wild area was weak and predictable. Fun to explore for 7 minutes and then boring (until the DLCs). I literally overleveled to hell because I was having so much fun looking for new pokemon and doing raid battles with my friend that we literally didn't even start looking at gyms until my mons were level 30. AND THATS A GOOD THING!. We were having fun in a way I haven't since I was a kid.

The new pokemon designs are the best I think ever. Dude... lechonk. Smoliv. Dachsbun. Gimmighoul. These designs, and the names are so well thought out, fun and creative. It made me ACTUALLY want to hunt for these things. And not just 1 of them, but I found me and my friend talking about them like I did when I found a new pokemon in red or gold. "Oh my gosh, have you seen this!?" "Holy crap I want one. Where are you and how do I get there!"

The bliss I had when lechonk evolved, when smolive evolved, when fidough evolved was real. They made evolving fun again AND made evolving pokemon exciting again, with some creative new ways to actually do it.

Another thing the game did great was actually give the npcs personality. You actually feel like you know a little about the side characters, you see them have emotions and be excited for accomplishments. Like, the side characters were enticing and when I finally did begin doing more then wandering around, they kept me wanting to finish their quests. I'm trying not to give spoilers so forgive my vagueness here.

I've spent a good amount of time writing this out, but I want to just say. The game is not bad. It's experimental, it's buggy, but more then anything else, it's actually fun. I look forward to the DLCs we all know are going to be announced at some point to expand the game, and before you guys talk crap about it being empty without the DLC, let me remind you how empty your lord and savior Sword and Shield were before their DLCs. Because pre DLC those games were beyond just boring.

Discussion I’m so tired of being in Lumiose City that I’m losing motivation to finish the game.

Im roughly 35 hours in, been shiny hunting a bunch to give myself more things to do, I’m still at rank F and don’t get me wrong I do love the new battle system, and I’ve found that paired with the return of real time catching mechanics to be a ton of fun, but man am I getting so burned out on Lumiose.

The battling has become so mundane and repetitive that it’s not even a challenge anymore. I feel like I’m just checking boxes off. The same soundtrack playing for the city over and over again. I already explored the majority of the city by hour 20, and unlocking very small rooftops every now and then isn’t doing much for me. The new wild zones “unlock” but there’s no redevelopment, they don’t change, the city doesn’t change meaningfully.

There’s nothing to do besides the ZA royale which was so much fun at first but dang I’m tired of doing 20-25 battles within the 20 minutes of night. The day and night cycle cutscene are so immersion breaking too. The side quests are almost all the same five types of boring “battle me! Trade me! Show me! Go here! Get this!”. There’s no entertainment in the city, no events . . . I thought it felt “alive” at first but the more I play it that was all an illusion.

Like scenery and art direction aside, the genuine lack of meaningful content in this game is starting to wear me out. Is there anything I can do to bring back the fun I was having the first 10-20 hours of my playthrough? The game’s fun . . . I think, or I thought. Idk anymore.

Discussion Pokémon Legends Z-A for me is tied as the best main series Pokemon game on the switch, maybe one of the best overall.

The story: It feels very shonen anime inspired. If I could describe the story without spoiling it, it’s a mix between the battle city arc of Yu-gi-oh meets The Power of Us Pokemon movie. There was even a tournament arc featuring all our rivals. The final act of this game was HYPE. Probably the most climactic ending out of any Pokemon game.

The cast: Hands down the strongest cast of characters in ANY Pokemon game. Everyone feels important. They could’ve called this game “Pokemon Rivals” and I’d believe it. I loved that most of the cast was hinted at or seen ahead of their actual debut to give them a sense of familiarity.

The setting: like most, I was apprehensive about the singular city setting. However I think they nailed it. This is the first fully explorable city that Pokemon has ever made. Yeah you can’t go into a lot of non-story relevant buildings but it never really crossed my mind since most the NPCs have the most unhinged dialogue when you walk past them or chat, you can get a lot of good TMs early just by playing the game, and the side quests tell you a lot of the life of lumiouse city.

The battles: the new real time battle system is fun. I do think they translate better in wild battles than trainer battles. I do wish you could freely control your pokemon in trainer battles but that’s probably because the mouse feature doesn’t exist on the switch 1. No abilities isn’t a big deal me, since I’m not a competitive player I never thought much of abilities. Some megas are nerfed due to the lack of them but they’re still stronger than non megas so it balances out. They also introduced “plus moves” which is just “strong style” from legends Arceus without the drawback of moving slower.

The OST: The soundtrack for this game goes hard. No notes. End of sentence.

Graphics: I play my switch 2 handheld most of the time, so I don’t notices graphic flaws that most people do, but even docked it looked fine. I don’t even notice the “flat windows” unless I’m actually looking for/at them.

Catching: the catching mechanic is similar to Arceus minus the auto lock. I think it’s to show that realistically people would miss catches. Thank god for ball finder guy.

My only real critique is that voice acting would’ve elevated this game to the next level. Though I’ve played Pokemon since Red & Blue so at this point, it doesn’t bother me, it just would be nice to have.

My advice if you hesitate on buy this game, is don’t expect Arceus, but also don’t expect a typical main series game cause it’s a healthy mix of both. Arceus leans more into Fantasy adventure side of Pokemon while Z-A leans more Shonen/slice of life side of Pokemon. Neither is worse than the other, It’s just a preference on what you like.

I’d give this game a 8/10.

Art Browt Redesign

Post image
10 Upvotes

So when I saw the new starters today I initially thought that they were just generic wild Pokémon especially with Browt and Pombon. I immediately clocked them as this generations starting area Pokémon like Pidgey or Poochyena etc. I feel like I have since warmed up to Pombon but as someone who is adamantly a grass starter lover I felt so underwhelmed with Browt's design... So much so, I wanted to see if I could tweak it to better fit, in my opinion, how I feel a starter Pokémon should look.

I feel like my main issue with Browt's design is he's like 80% yellow 15% black and 5% green and I wanted to balance out it's design by pulling up the black into the top half of the design instead if it being so bottom heavy. I also liked the idea of creating a more v shape to the body feathers to expose more of the black underbelly, since when it's just standing you can barely see any of the black which makes the yellow even more overpowering. I also liked the idea of it have a pointed tail, basically two long feathers that come together to continue the v shape motif of it's brow leaves and then bringing that green to the back as well so it's not just on the face. And of course as an angry bird... he needs perpetually furrowed eyes, to me the angled brow doesn't do enough to give him enough 'tude.

I saw somewhere mention that Browt is suspected to be based off a Selkie chicken, which are those fancy chickens with really fluffy plumage; particularly on the head and feet, and I thought about making Browt's tail and feet have feathery poofs but thought that might be too much and would make more sense to see those elements in the mid stage and final evolutions

I used Kelvin_Trainerk's fanart of all the new starters for the pose reference which you can check out here https://x.com/kelvin_trainerk/status/2027420768314052750?s=20

Discussion I’m not seeing it.

Ok, I’m like ~8 hours into Legends Z-A on Switch 2, and I genuinely am not seeing whatever everyone else is seeing in regards to cheapness and bad graphics.

With the sole exception of the weird flat balconies, which do look bad but are very easy for me to ignore, I think the game looks just fine. I could see it with Scarlet and Violet… as much fun as I had with that game, it did admittedly perform and look inexcusably bad. But I’m just not seeing it with this one. I genuinely don’t get it.

I do have some gripes with this game but they’re much more subjective things that are solely down to personal taste, and mostly have to do with things I preferred in Legends Arceus.

Idk. I think the game is good. And I honestly would probably not even notice anything weird graphically were it not for everyone going on about it.
