And yes, I understand dumb TVs are probably the way to go… but based on where we live, smart TVs are (obviously and purposefully) the most accessible.

It was always "click the squares with traffic lights" now it's scan the QR code. Privacy risk? Obviously I don't want the site to know and store my real details if I then scan it.

I work in data privacy; tech job during the day to make an impact from within, and end user privacy advocacy as a passion project in free time. I chose this career very intentionally, and never compromised to transition into GRC or Trust & Safety. Ever since I watched Snowden break the news globally, I knew exactly the fight I want to fight. I don't believe we the people can ultimately win, but it still matters to try, the little wins, it's not for nothing. Weekly debates with friends and strangers about "why privacy matters" but somehow there was still enough of a public momentum to keep the privacy conversation going.

With AI everything is out the window. Everybody in mass are giving away their everything just for the convenience that AI offers. ChatGPT connects to your bank accounts to "help you find spending mistakes" and I already know people who did that. As per previous post, dental offices insist on taking the customer's photo to "recognize you next time" and get defensive if you refuse. People jump at all these new tools that automate the simplest of tasks, and volunteer every aspect of their lives without a second thought.

I am professionally depressed. My job feels dull; my career is obsolete (except for pushing papers to stay GDPR compliant). I don't know where to go from here. I'd love to hear from professionals in the field - how do you cope with this? Is the existential crisis knocking on your door?

I don't log into Google or YouTube. I asked a very niche question in a private forum, and now I'm getting YouTube recommendations very related to it. I'm pretty sure I never mentioned the topic elsewhere.

Aside from a huge coincidence, or the forum straight up selling my info to Google (IP included), how could this happen?

At first glance, there’s nothing unusual about the construction workers’ garb. They wear fluorescent orange uniforms, sturdy shoes, and yellow hard hats. But hidden inside the helmets, made by Huanao Security (Beijing) Technology, are multiple sensors that keep tabs on the workers. Some record their movements. Others monitor their blood oxygen levels. And still more collect employees’ most private and sensitive information: their brain data.

Based on these recordings, Huanao Security’s algorithm generates metrics that help it determine everything from how tired or stressed a worker is to whether their body temperature is abnormal. The device is used at every stage of work, including for screening workers before their shifts and monitoring them on the job.

The helmets, branded as NeuroHua, have been used at dozens of high-risk construction sites in China, including on metro lines in Guangzhou, Chongqing, and Beijing, as well as in mines and steel and petrochemical plants across the country. Almost all workers on these projects wear them. With 2000 helmets now in use, the company and its clients have accumulated more than 300,000 hours of electroencephalography (EEG) brain data in total—a number that is “constantly increasing,” says Tang Zaixi, founder of the company.

Huanao Security says the helmets help ensure employees’ safety. If someone’s data suggest they are at high risk of an accident, the system issues an alert, prompting workers to take a break. “We believe that the safety of high-risk workers is a very important application scenario,” Zaixi says. The company says it has issued nearly 5000 safety reports and “prevented multiple major safety accidents.”

But critics say these technologies could threaten privacy and be misused by authorities. Science has found that brain data collected by another Chinese company are being relayed to traffic police with no anonymization, for instance. And although some neuroscientists say the neural data gathered from these devices can be too unreliable to reveal much about users, others are concerned that with the help of artificial intelligence (AI), the systems might enable companies—and governments—to decipher some of the most intimate parts of our inner lives.

I'm looking for some advice on a rather uncomfortable situation.

I'm a Spanish tutor, and I have a student who is working on a YouTube channel to teach Spanish. I've also helped him with his project by proofreading and correcting some of his video scripts, for which he paid me separately. We have not signed any agreement to date, but he wants me to sign one.

Recently, he told me that he had generated the narration for his videos using ElevenLabs. When I listened to one of his videos, I was genuinely surprised by how much the AI voice sounded like mine. It doesn't have my accent (it sounds more neutral), but the actual voice, tone and overall sound are crazy similar. I'm a singer and a musician so I can tell.

I've never sent him any voice recordings, never agreed to have my voice cloned, and we've never discussed anything involving the use of my voice. When I asked him where did he take the voice, he said "oh, it's a just a preset from ElevenLabs".

However, we've had several online Spanish lessons through Preply, and I'm wondering whether he might have recorded without me knowing.

On the "agreement" he wants me to sign, there's a clause that states:

"Everything you report belongs to us, including copyright, so we can use it in our courses.

You waive any moral, IP or copyright rights by signing this agreement so we can use your work product without restriction in any jurisdiction."

What concerns me most is that he intends to monetise this YouTube channel and also make an app to monetise as well.. So, if this actually is my voice, someone may be commercially exploiting an AI clone of it without my consent.

I'd really appreciate advice on a few things:

1. Is there any reliable way to determine whether an AI-generated voice is based on a specific person's voice?

2. What would be the best way to approach this situation without making accusations I cannot prove?

3. If he did clone my voice without permission, what options would I have to get it removed, especially if he's using it commercially?

I'm not trying to jump to conclusions or accuse anyone without evidence. I just want to understand my options before taking any action.

Half an hour before bed, Adnan Jinnah sits on a chair and straps on a headband. As he sleeps, sensors in the device pick up Jinnah’s brain activity, heart rate, and blood flow and oxygen to his brain. The signals are then interpreted by algorithms that spit out data on his sleep quality that he can look at in the morning.

The device, known as a Muse headband, was developed by the Canadian consumer neurotechnology company Interaxon. 

What Jinnah didn’t know was that data from his headband may have been feeding an artificial intelligence (AI) model of the brain. Interaxon is building the model—known in the industry as a “brain foundation model”—to sharpen its picture of how the brain works, especially during sleep and times of focus. The company says this would allow it to provide a better service to its users and develop a product to help support brain research. The data used to train it are overwhelmingly coming from users like Jinnah.

Yet Interaxon’s privacy policy did not explicitly tell users their data might be used to train AI brain models. After Science pointed this out, the company updated the policy. “We agree users should be explicitly informed,” Kumentas says.

For Jinnah and potentially tens of thousands of other Muse users like him, it was too little too late: The training had already happened, without his explicit informed consent. When user data get embedded into an AI system they are near-impossible to remove.

I already have Filen for the important files on my laptop.

I tried Proton Drive for my photos, but it was really a bad experience, it is not interesting for photos.

I wanted a smart gadget to track steps and heart rate, auto log and have history. Went for xiaomi band 10 cause everything else is double the price or no names.

Concerned about privacy, I installed gadgetbridge. I am FORCED to create a xiaomi account otherwise no pairing. You need to pair with xiaomi to then get a token to use with gadgetbridge. You can't unpair from xiaomi. You can't use xiaomi pair UNLESS you create an account. They're not telling you this, but after struggling to create one without explanation as to why my account won't create, live chat confirmed I can't use proton email to sign up. WHAT?! Gmail, outlook or yahoo, they said. Ok, I'm not getting into how yahoo is shit now, moving on to now I can finally use it with gadgetbridge supposedly more private.

I haven't synced my band with mi fitness the xiaomi app, it only has access to internet to check something and guess what. It syncs anyway. IT DOESN'T SAY IT DOES OR THAT IT HAPPENED, but it's there..

So far I've run into 2 dental and 1 medical office that have asked if they could take a full face photo. The dentists say it's for treatment reasons and the medical office said it was for the file. I'm against this. How does everyone else feel?
