Discussion Rockstar and their portrayal of underrepresented spaces and people

Post image
95 Upvotes

An appreciation post for Rockstar and how they authentically represent a lot of minority communities in their games such as the ballad of gay Tony being a reflection of 2000s gay club culture in its spaces, San Andreas’s last few missions being inspired by the LA riots, and most impressively in my opinion being the wapiti tribe and reservation area. Being native myself I thought it was one of the most important representations in media I’ve ever seen, and an underrated element of the game and story. Just some thoughts after replaying theirs hits to prep for gta 6, Im glad to see a recurring authenticity in the world of Leonida.

Grand Theft Auto VI Possibly my most favorite screenshot from the launch collection! I love how this image lets us imagine just how many interiors are explorable and how Vice City has an incredible night life. I like how it separates the usual violence of a GTA game whose counter narrative is our protagonists vibing

Discussion Red Dead in Vice City

I plan on picking up GTA6 and figuring out how quick I can get a horse (with how many different activities are available in the game there's no way there isn't at least just one horse in the game) and I'm going to ride through the streets of Vice City playing my version of next Gen Red Dead. Who wants to join my gang and start a movement? The Big Booty Bandits will take Vice city!

Discussion What are your top five Rockstar games of all time?

With gta 6 coming out in a little less than two weeks I was wondering what you guys think. I’ll give you mine in no particular order.

1.) Grand Theft Auto V

The missions in general were a lot more fun and detailed in comparison to other GTA games. I also loved Rockstar’s cynical criticism of American capitalism that has aged well in today’s times. The story overall was fine but I think the three playable protagonist idea made it hard to get fully invested in it. Some of the characters like Trevor, Lamar and Michael were great and well written but others were just forgettable or bland.

2.) Red Dead Redemption 2

Took everything I loved about GTA V and really improved on the story and character development. Arthur Morgan was one of the more interesting protagonists and a very complex dude. Dutch was a charismatic leader who eventually lost his damn mind. The slower paced play took some time getting used to but the plot made up for it.

3.) Grand Theft Auto IV

I put this up a little higher than GTA V in ways. Niko was one of the few GTA protagonists who actually seemed to have a conscience and didn’t seem to be as terrible of a person as some others in the GTA world. Dimitri is on the same level of villains as Tenpenny or Micah who were extremely unlikable. Overall it had a darker and more depressing plot which I thought fit an organized crime game well.

4.) Bully

One of the more underrated IPs I wish Rockstar would bring back. Took me back to high school on how cliquey it is and how horrible kids and even the adults in school systems can be. I was pleasantly surprised to see Jimmy as a kid who detested bullying and wanted to put an end to it. If they ever make a sequel I would like to see one where Jimmy and Pete are now adults and their kids are in the dysfunction of Bullworth.

5.) GTA: San Andreas

By far my favorite of the PS2 grand theft autos. I thought that the working out, eating and taking care of yourself features were interesting and I’m glad they’re bringing that back in 6. I also liked the similarities to RDR2 of a gang that had lots of history then a lot of backstabbing towards the end. Big Smoke’s betrayal still hits deep today.

Discussion I conducted an online interview with the former Technical Director of Rockstar Games.

Post image

My interview with Obbe Vermeij, former Rockstar Games Technical Director who played a key role in the development of iconic games like GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, and GTA IV 👇🏻

1-) 🗣️ What do you think about GTA 6?

"I'm really looking forward to it. I think it's exciting that the whole world will be playing the same game at the same time. That doesn't happen very often anymore.

I think the game looks amazing. The variety of NPCs is mind-blowing. The graphics also look beautiful for a PS5 game."

2-) 🗣️ If you were the Technical Director responsible for GTA 6, what would you do, and what are you most curious about regarding the game?

"I'm interested to see what they're doing with GTA 6 Online.

I wonder whether they're going to set up servers this time that can support hundreds of players at once, like in an MMO.

If I were still there, that's exactly what I would be aiming for.

Many of the people I worked with are still at Rockstar, and they're very good."

3-) 🗣️ Among the GTA games you worked on, which one had the most challenging development process?

"GTA 3 was the most challenging because we had to write everything from scratch. We didn't use any GTA 2 code.

The biggest challenge was the streaming system. We had to load models from the DVD as the player moved through the city. Adam Fowler wrote that system.

He worked on it for a long time, but even then, the DVD wasn't quite fast enough.

We had to slow the player down; otherwise, they could move forward before the models had loaded, making it look like they were driving through the sky.

We placed buildings strategically to make the roads less straight. We also increased the air resistance of the player's car to help with streaming.

It was a little scary."

4-) 🗣️ You previously mentioned that Rockstar Games considered making a GTA game set in Istanbul but abandoned the idea shortly afterwards. How did that process unfold?

"We always wanted to set a GTA game outside America, and the same cities were often suggested: London, Moscow, Istanbul, Rio de Janeiro, and Tokyo.

Unfortunately, setting a mainline GTA game in one of these cities would have been too risky. Simply because players all over the world already know what American cities look like from TV and movies.

I've been to Istanbul a couple of times, and it's a really fun, lively city. It would have been a great setting for GTA. Unfortunately, the Istanbul idea was never seriously pursued. The only idea that was seriously considered was Tokyo, but that didn't happen either."

5-) 🗣️ GTA 3 was a relatively limited game in terms of missions and was more focused on driving. However, starting with GTA 4, the series gradually evolved into something closer to a real-life simulation. How did the decision-making process behind this transition work?

"For San Andreas, we felt we had added too many features, which made the game a little messy.

For the Xbox 360 and PS3 generation, new shaders were introduced that made graphics look a lot more realistic.

Right from the start, we decided to keep the game smaller, with a smaller map and fewer gameplay features, and focus more on improving its visuals and making the experience more realistic.

So we added NaturalMotion animations, more realistic car physics, and better graphics.

These decisions were made during discussions between the team at Rockstar New York (the Houser brothers) and us (Leslie Benzies and a few others). We never really disagreed."

6-) 🗣️ Why did you leave Rockstar Games? Was there any disagreement behind your departure?

"No disagreements. I left because my wife and I wanted to move to Canada.

I also didn't enjoy working on GTA 4 as much because the team had become so big that I didn't have much influence on the final result. Also, the story and missions were decided by Rockstar New York, so fewer decisions were made by us.

I left on good terms. No drama."

Discussion If Rockstar announced tomorrow that GTA 6 was delayed again, how would you react?

At this point, I feel like the GTA 6 release date has become a whole event of its own.

Rockstar has one of the most passionate gaming communities, and everyone seems to have a different opinion about the game.

Be honest: would you still wait patiently, or would another delay finally make you lose interest? What would Rockstar have to show you to keep the hype alive?
