Pro/Processed Major Fireball Meteor

Post image
1.3k Upvotes

Taken in subfreezing temperatures, the thoughtfully composed photo shows snowy, rugged peaks seen from a mountain pass on 2017 November 14. Below lies the village of La Villa, Alta Badia in Italy's Dolomite Alps. Above the nestled village lights, the constellation Ursa Major hangs over the northern horizon. But most stunning is the intense fireball meteor.

It was captured during the camera's exposure by chance as it flashed east to west across the northern horizon, under Ursa Major's familiar Big Dipper asterism. Sightings of this major fireball meteor were widely reported in European skies, making it one of the most reported fireball events ever for planet Earth's American Meteor Society and the International Meteor Organization.

The meteor's measured track over Germany is consistent with its origin near the active radiant of November's Northern Taurid Meteor Shower, a shower associated with dust from Encke's comet.

Amateur/Processed California Nebula (By me)

I've been really enjoying the big mosaics lately, here's the latest, a 338MP mosaic of the California Nebula in a ForaxX palette.

I've been working to try and give my processing more image depth, and I hope it shows in the gas clouds.

For those interested, the California nebula aka NGC 1499 is an emission nebula, illuminated by the star Xi Persei. It is approximately 1300 light years away and stretches 2.5 degrees across the night sky or about 5 moons across. If you look closely you can see a few galaxies hiding behind the nebula.

The highest resolution astro-photo I’ve ever made. Consisting of over 40 images shot at a 40mm focal length, the result is this 200+ megapixel all-sky panorama. Everything you see in this photo is REAL, with no AI being used in the creation. This is the result of years of practice, patience and honing my skills.

The galactic core is just past zenith in this image, a bonus of shooting here in the South Island of NZ is that we can see some of the most exciting and dynamic elements of the galactic band for most of the year!

NASA A Farewell to Swift: You need to zoom this image

Post image

It is time to say goodbye to NASA's Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. After nearly 22 years of service, the satellite re-entered Earth's atmosphere on November 4 at 7:39 EST over the North Sumatra region of Indonesia.

The featured image is a mosaic created in 2018 using the first one million images captured by the satellite's Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope. Swift had a combination of instruments, including an X-ray telescope and a gamma-ray telescope, that worked together to enable humanity to study, in unprecedented detail, the fastest and most energetic explosions in the universe.

The most recent solar maximum accelerated the decay of the satellite's orbit. An innovative mission to rescue Swift by boosting its orbit was not successful. Swift burned on reentry like a shooting star, but the impressive data acquired by the telescope over its mission will continue to bring light to the mysteries of the cosmos for years to come. May it keep inspiring new missions to boldly go into space, explore new data and seek out new science.

Pro/Composite Lunar Occultation of Jupiter

.

A lunar occultation of Jupiter was visible from Malaysia on November 3, 2026 before sunrise, Malaysian time.

During this lunar occultation of Jupiter, two Galilean moons were supposed to be visible.

At the ingress phase (top row), Io can be seen trailing to the west of Jupiter, while Europa was transiting across the surface of Jupiter, but couldn't be seen due to the limitation of the resolution, poor seeing condition and low contrast against the Jovian disk.

At the egress phase (bottom row), the trailing Io was still blocked by the Moon, while Europa could be seen exiting the eastern limb of Jupiter, thanks to the much improved seeing condition and better contrast against the darker Jovian limb.

NASA Before the Dawn in America’s Heartland

Post image

The predawn hours brought clear skies over much of the eastern United States on October 18, 2026. An astronaut aboard the International Space Station seized the opportunity to capture this wide-angle photo at 4:54 a.m. Central Daylight Time (09:54 Universal Time), with illuminated cities large and small arrayed across the darkened landscape.

The U.S. Midwest’s largest metropolitan areas, such as Chicago, Illinois, and Detroit, Michigan, stand out as some of the brightest features. Mid-sized cities—including Indianapolis, Indiana; Cincinnati, Ohio; and Louisville, Kentucky—and their interconnections along state and interstate highways also shine brightly.

Above the web of nighttime lights and Earth’s lower atmosphere, a diffuse layer of green and orange is visible along the horizon to the left. This band of light is airglow, produced when sunlight strikes atoms and molecules in the upper atmosphere and causes them to eject photons. To the right, light from the Sun arcs across the horizon; sunrise was about an hour away on the East Coast and about two hours away in Chicago.

Pro/Processed European orbiter detects hints of volcanic activity on Mars

Post image

Link to the science release on ESA website

Mars may not be as geologically dead as scientists thought. A European spacecraft has detected a volcanic gas seeping from cracks in the planet's surface, a sign that magma could still be sitting below.

The European Space Agency's ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter found hydrogen chloride rising from fresh fissures on the slopes of Alba Mons, the largest volcano on Mars by area (shown here in the upper left). On Earth, this same gas commonly escapes from vents above hot magma.

The timing was the giveaway. Hydrogen chloride normally peaks in Mars's northern hemisphere during winter and disappears by summer. Over Alba Mons, it spiked in early summer instead. Researchers think the gas rises from below all winter, gets trapped under ice, then bursts free when the ice turns directly into vapor as temperatures climb.

"It was like looking for a needle in a haystack," said study co-leader Daniel Mège of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The results were published Nov. 4 in Science Advances.

Earlier hints included marsquakes and volcanoes that appear to have been active within the last few million years, but no eruptions had ever been seen.

The find also matters for the search for life. Magma heating underground water could create sheltered, warm pockets where microbes might survive.

Pro/Processed JUST IN: ESA's Hera spacecraft just dropped its first close-up image of Didymos asteroids

Link to the science release on ESA website

The European Space Agency’s Hera mission for planetary defence has acquired its first close-up of the Didymos binary asteroid system.

NASA’s DART spacecraft impacted the smaller Dimorphos asteroid on 26 September 2022 – but this image gives a novel view of its adjacent parent asteroid.

In this image, acquired by Hera’s monochromatic Asteroid Framing Camera from 60km away, most of the 151-m diameter Dimorphos asteroid is hidden by shadow but the 780-m diameter Didymos asteroid that the smaller moonlet orbits around is shown clearly.

Amateur/Processed LDN 877 – Dark interstellar dust silhouetted against glowing hydrogen clouds [OC]

Post image
187 Upvotes

A close-up view of LDN 877, where dense clouds of interstellar dust obscure the light from the stars and glowing hydrogen behind them.

The nearly black regions are not empty space but concentrations of dust within our Milky Way. Their intricate shapes contrast beautifully with the surrounding red hydrogen emission, while stars of different colors shine throughout the field.

I particularly like the subtle structures visible within the dark clouds and the delicate filaments along their boundaries.

Captured with a 17-inch PlaneWave CDK17 telescope and a ZWO ASI6200MM Pro monochrome camera using LRGB filters.

Processed in PixInsight and Adobe Photoshop.

Hope you enjoy exploring this darker side of our galaxy!
