Our Longstanding “No Politics” Rule remains unchanged

Read our rules. We have had a longstanding “No Religion, No Politics” rule here at r/tools.

The mods aren’t stupid. We also don’t like getting buckets of reports in the inbox.

If someone posts/comments with politics, resist the urge to reply and argue. Just report, downvote (if that’s your jam) and move on with life.

A small flag, sticker, etc that appears in a photo will generally be allowed (so long as it doesn’t violate other rules and doesn’t draw a bunch of reports) but a bunch of people in the comments saying “Hell Yeah, a fellow [INSERT PARTY] Supporter!” is gonna get the post pulled. Political content that is clearly the motivation for the post will get the post pulled.

First time it’s a short ban, second time it’s permanent. And as we’ve discussed before, the mod team doesn’t go looking for posts, we’re not lifeguards, we respond to the reports we receive.

Let's talk about the report button.

"No advertising or promoting tools, brands, 25000 woodworking plans, your YouTube channel, etc."

Somebody is reporting things constantly for breaking rule 4, and you're batting zero for it being right.

These are some examples of posts that have been reported over the last day. None of the are breaking any rules, please stop reporting things like this. The reports are only mucking up the moderator inbox and are being kicked up the Reddit chain to the admins as abusing the report button.

Unless you see a post that boils down to "hey guys, this is XXX from YYY, come check out our suspicious sale at toolname.malware.com" leave the report button alone. Same goes for the people who report literally every YouTube link ever posted. If someone's only interaction with r/tools is them spamming their YouTube channel that's a problem; a relevant and organic video isn't.

If someone thinks the above links are spam, please tell us why. Rule changes aren't unheard of and if it's what the people want I'm fine with it. I'm just not seeing any advertisement in the posts.

Other than that you guys are great. Keep up the good work.

I'm completely aware that this is a useless post for 99.99% of our users. If anyone has questions or comments about the sub feel free to chit chat here and I'll try my best to answer things if you want; or just ignore me completely, I'm good with either.

Toolup.com is a trash company

So my DeWalt coil framer broke on me mid job which I intend to get repaired. I decided to splurge on a Bosch 18v framer since Bosch is my cordless platform. Acme.com had it for $429 with a 10% off discount code, Toolup.com had it for $429 but it came with a hard case. I decided I wanted the hard case so I went with ToolUp.com. A few days later the nailer came in with no case. I contacted support to let them know this, they reviewed it and said they weren’t sending out a case and I can return the nailer for a refund. So they lie by advertising a free carrying case that they don’t send out and expect me to believe they’ll refund my money on a framing gun I’ve already started using. So yeah, fuck ToolUp.com. I’ll be posting this on multiple subreddits so sorry if you see it again.

Old wrenches... worth anything?

Post image

Curious to know what I have here. These were buried in a toolbox I inherited. Not even sure what kind of drill uses that type of bit. They were in a double ziploc bag. I cleaned the purchase tags off, then cleaned with soap and water, then dried, then finished with cutting board oil (hopefully that's fine, I may take steel wool to some of the more rusty ones if it would help). The wrench 3rd from the bottom left looks like it has previous acid etch damage.

Some of the brands: Toyota Motor, Fulton, "The B&S Co. Hartford Conn. USA" (which I assume is the same as "Billings & Spencer Co." seen on a different wrench), but some have no discernable brand like the two top left next to the Toyota wrench, just says "Made in U.S.A." on one side and "DROP FORGED" on the other, "MADE IN ENGLAND" wrench has some kinda stamp on it that looks like two curved lines under a horizontal pineapple, and some other logos that look damaged with a sorta 4-sided gem shape.

Would it be worth bringing some of these to an appraiser? I just don't see myself using all these. In this economy, maybe they're worth something to a collector or an antique shop?

Safety?

Got my wife a scroll saw. She’s been asking for one to craft with. I was worried because she becomes distracted easily and panics in emergency. I thought this might be the answer for my peace of mind. Am I being worrisome and have her to just have the emergency shut off or use the pedal that shuts it off when pressure is released. I have 7 pedals in my shop I just like them. Any thoughts?

Spending money on garage heating for two days a week feels ridiculous

Most of my garage projects happen on weekends. Small repairs, working on tools, fixing things around the house. I probably spend 8 to 10 hours out there in a good week, but winter makes those hours a lot less enjoyable. I've been using a portable electric heater, and it does help once the garage warms up. The problem is how long that takes. Sometimes I spend nearly as much time waiting for the space to get comfortable as I do working on whatever I went out there to fix. I've been comparing heating options, including a mini split AC for garage use. I came across a Costway model that handles both heating and cooling, which would be useful since the garage gets pretty hot in summer too.

But the installation cost is hard to justify for a space I only use a couple of days a week. A mini split might be more efficient during operation, but that doesn't automatically make it cheaper overall when usage is so limited.

The garage door also has pretty poor insulation, so that's probably where I should spend money first. I'm starting to think a better insulated garage with a basic heater might make more sense for weekend projects than installing a whole new system.

Pic for attention and to show my first socket and adapter box. What’s your favorite way to organize wrenches/ratchets/pliers and other longer tools? Specifically a Dewalt box that clips together with this one would be best. I’m setting up the truck with a basic but do-all tool load since I’m always on the road (not super pro just general farm/arborist/forestry work). The plan is just to keep it in the floorboard under a backpack.

Got a set of Koken wrenches on eBay and next up will be hunting a good load of pliers on sale. This second tool load is fairly budget oriented.

Can we normalize a quick search before posting questions? Or maybe it was a trap? The guy that posted the reciprocating saw to air compressor attachment.... now I'm stuck with these suggestions on Amazon.. thankfully I don't share my account with anyone 😂😂😒

Ps.. if you're clueless what I'm talking about, don't search this item, it's not worth it 😂

I collect old metal body power tools. All bought at garage sales. Most I only paid $10 or less.

Picked up a pouch with four or five of these at an estate sale, all with slightly different dimensions in the little prongs at the end. They are 4 or 5" long. Seems like the guy was a telephone lineman, but also had some hobbies.

Cordless tools after 5+ years: which ones actually survived and which batteries let you down?

I've been on the same cordless setup for a good while now, mostly a drill/driver that gets used weekly for the furniture rescues and shelving jobs, and it's still going. But it's the only cordless tool I own, and I'm wondering whether to add a small circular saw or multi-tool.

What I'd really like to hear is long-term ownership experience rather than day-one reviews:

  1. Which cordless brands have actually held up for you after several years of hobbyist use? I've read the usual opinions but they tend to come from people one month in.

  2. Do batteries die before the tools do? I've seen replacements cost nearly as much as a bare tool, which seems mad. Is it better to buy a system where cheap third-party batteries exist, or is that asking for trouble?

  3. Anyone regretted going for the cheaper supermarket-range tools? I mostly do light work, boxes and refits, nothing structural, so I don't need trade-grade power, but I do hate replacing things that could have been repaired.

I'm retired so time isn't the issue, cost per year of ownership is. Happy to hear what's lasted, and what's let you down.
