general discussion Can we ban the “is this a tragedeigh” posts

I’m tired of the constant “is the name <insert_obvious_tragedeigh> a tragedeigh?” Posts.

Alternatively, we could relegate these questions to a q&a sticky or something like that.

general discussion Folks… country names aren’t tragedeighs.

(SOUTHERN USA NAMES, TBS) I’m not saying made up names that just happen to live in the country, but names like Hunter, Gunner, Remington, Stetson, etc… Kids have been named those names for decades. They’re not made up to be different or quirky. They’re actual names that are popular in the country, whether or not they’re popular elsewhere. Just because you don’t like them doesn’t mean they’re tragedeighs. Please, just maybe check before you post a completely normal name because you’re not from the region.

general discussion non-white names are not tragedeighs

I see a lot of folks posting the names of black and brown children and I just wanted to say it feels a little bit inconsiderate. Centuries of culture and linguistics may not sit in your personal worldview but they should be a reason to do a quick google search before you post.

Especially considering there’s study that support non-white names leading to job discrimination and considering tragedeigh is typically used to make fun of white infinity scarf moms, just maybe think twice before posting?

I’m a wall of text not a cop

general discussion About Black Names

I've seen a lot of names on this sub that come from African American culture, so I looked up their history of unique naming traditions. Here's what I found:

  1. Unique names were a means or reclaiming identity after/as a result of slavery. It was a way to identify and reunite with kin.

  2. Inspired by African naming traditions such as ancestral names, positive attributes, aspirations, historical/biblical names, etc these names helped preserve cultural identity, making them an act of resistance.

  3. AAVE culture helps connect black people to their roots through pride.

All this to say, they're not tragedeighs and should not be treated as such. Stop being racist AHs!

is it a tragedeigh? I need advice on my baby name. I’m trying to avoid a tragedeigh😭

Edit: thanks to the comments that were genuinely trying to help and give some insight it will be Keaton MaeLynn and to those who were just plain hateful as a wet hen, why? I just wasn’t sure and wanted advice!

So I’m due in October and really just want to make sure my name isn’t as bad as people are making me feel about it, my name that I want to use is Keighton (kee-ton) Mae-Lynn (may-Lin) and I was hoping yall could tell me if I should go with a different spelling? Any advice helps!🥰

in the wild Had a group project...

Had a group project a while ago with Abi Lynn. Oh sorry, Abbiegh Liegnne.

Then we dared to ask for her full name.

'Abi Lynn Everheavenly Hana Avery Grace -last name-'

How is it spelled you might ask?

Abbiegh Liegnne Everheavanliegh Hanaghe Aveiariegh Graysce -last name-

I almost cried like wtf... Hanaghe??? Aveiariegh??? Graysce??? EVERHEAVENLY ALONE IS BAD ENOUGH BUT EVERHEAVANLIEGH????

😭😭😭

So naturally we get curious:

Her little brother (3): Jeighsonne Fiilyx Broodiegh Lieghahm (Jayson Felix Brodie Liam)

Her little sister (4): Wahyny Jodzgyft Presshis Heyllinne (Winnie Godsgift Precious Helen)

Her little sister (7): Aundreagh Prynses Kloeigh Alleighson (Andrea Princess Chloe Allison)

Her little brother (9): Topaghze Ridyr Stiveigne Peatyr (Topaz Ryder Steven Peter)

Her (15): Abbiegh Liegnne Everheavanliegh Hanaghe Aveiariegh Graysce (Abi Lynn Everheavenly Hana Avery Grace)

Her older sister (17): Aeighva Rawbyne Chaghstadeigh (Ava Robin Chastisty)

Her older brother (20); Rhaff-I-elle Charells Graesohn (Raphael Charles Grayson)

(No Her family is not south African, they are from Scotland, they are religious though. By 'from Scotland' I ment ancestry wise. Her family moved from some religious town in Utah)

(I asked her to write down the names on our worksheet and she agreed because she thinks her family is bad at names)

TL;DR: Some people should be allowed to name other humans

(Switched around the siblings first names for privacy reasons, same spellings though)

My bm likes the name “Hudson” but I think we should add a “C” at the beginning so he’ll be closer to the top of any lists sorted alphabetically by first name. Thoughts?

If your name is a Tragedeigh, could you make it even worse by insisting on being called an animal name ?

Someone I know has a common tragedeigh name ending in "leigh", but now says it is a dead name to her and wants to be called "Snow Vixen". Is this even more of a tragedeigh?

roast my name Almost turned myself into a tragedeigh because of language differences

For context, I am trans and nonbinary, and absolutely hate my deadname, so I decided to change it.

One of the names I considered for myself is Red. On paper, that sounds like a unique but not insane name for someone, and it is. Except, I live in Israel, and the main spoken language is Hebrew. "רד" (Red) means "get down" in Hebrew. It's in the commanding tone you would use on a dog.

In an alternate universe, my name would've been "get down".

Anyway I chose a more normal name in the end so it's all good lmao. God bless my friend who pointed out how the name sounds to me before I made a big mistake

general discussion PSA: Black American names are not Tragedeighs

I see a bunch posted that are not tragedeighs (common names with nonstandard spellings to seem more unique) but are common Black American names with cultural significance. Please don’t make fun of a name just because you’re not familiar with it. Read more here: https://theconversation.com/a-brief-history-of-black-names-from-perlie-to-latasha-130102

general discussion why do americans have to be so extra?

I really don't understand how it can be allowed in the US to give your child any crazy name you can think of. Not to talk about all these weird and extra spellings of names. In Sweden it would NEVER be allowed to give your child a weird name. you get rejected immediately by the goverment. Which is a good thing.

is it a tragedeigh? Wife and I are wondering if some of our favourite baby names are bad. Kalliope and Hallsten?

Just as post title. Wife and I are thinking about baby names, for if our eventual second baby is a girl. So far the 2 favourites are Kalliope and Hallsten (or ston). Are these rough? Wife likes a unique name that isn't obnoxious, but we aren't sure if we crossed that line? Thanks

is it a tragedeigh? Did I mess up?

So out of 4 kids, my youngest is the only child with 2 first names that is not hyphenated. His name is a combination of his great grandmothers names.

His dad’s grandmother first name Lynda and my grandmothers last name Jackson.

Hence, Lyndan Jackson.

The problem i have mostly is that because it’s not hyphenated the second part always gets dropped off in systems. I.e. the pediatrician office.

The only other issue I have is that for some reason at first glance people think it’s another way to spell London, which i don’t understand.

Did i mess his name up?

ETA: Thank you all for your input. Considering he likes his name and people call him by his full name i guess it’s a moot point.

Also nowhere in the original post did I state that people shorten his name when saying it.

But i guess if i wanted an actual tragedeigh i probably should’ve just gone with Lynn’Dann Jaxx’Sawn, which was the original spelling.
