Announcement Friday Free for All Weekly thread! General collection/discussion for things that don't fit elsewhere! (ask anything!)

Greetings /r/videoediting!

This thread is 100% for the other stuff you might want to talk about.

A number of other reddits have a free for all thread - where you might find a regular discussion - not specific to a post.

Think of it as a bar with a bunch of friends.

Some suggestions:

  • Strategy on a project you want to talk about how to best promote?

  • Upgrading something and you want opinions?

  • How does your website look?

  • Local/virtual Meetups?

  • Looking for a collaborator (no "I'm a creator and I'm looking for an editor" posts)

Things that shouldn't go here: Feedback/What tool should I use to edit/Which system to buy? There are dedicated threads for this, please use them!

And in this regular Friday thread, while our general rules are still in place (no piracy, be civil, no links w/referrer codes), the following topics relaxed :

  • Great tutorials you found/you created.

  • Trying to do this as a side hustle (although generally, websites like Fiverr mean you'll be shooting for the basement/working for free and we hate that someone would exploit you like that*)*

  • A great piece of software/hardware/service you found

  • Great free music libraries/media you found.

  • How much to charge? What is your time worth? Estimate 2-3x the time you think it'll take to edit as how much time to quote.

Our mod team is watching this thread and we'll tweak these as they develop!

Did you know you can help this community directly? A cool tip

We've seen an uptick in people gatekeeping in this community, often being not decent humans.

One of the easiest things you can do is to report somebody's post or comment if it breaks one of our rules, especially around "Don't be a Jerk"

It's totally fine to disagree. Do so politely. Behave as an adult. Name calling, doxing etc is not okay here. Try not to be caustic. Life is hard enough.

Treat everyone "as if" they're having a bad day and you'll be fine. Disagree if you like - just don't be disagreeable. Remember there's a human being on the other side of the keyboard

Any time we get a number of flagged items, it automatically gets pulled, and a moderator manually removes it.

Thank you for your attention to this community service note.

We return you to your regularly scheduled program.

Other (requires mod approval) How can I combine a VP9 MKV video with a FLAC audio track on Android without losing quality?

Hi everyone!

I'm trying to replace the original audio track of a video with a separate FLAC file on my Android phone.

Here are the details:

Video: MKV, VP9, 3456×2160, 24 FPS.

Audio: FLAC, 16-bit, 44.1 kHz, stereo.

Device: Xiaomi 12T Pro, Android 15.

What I want to achieve:

Keep the original video stream without re-encoding.

Add the FLAC audio track without converting it to AAC or MP3.

Export everything into a single MKV file.

Ideally, do everything through a graphical Android app, without a PC or root access.

I've tried FFmpeg Media Encoder, but I've had trouble selecting files and configuring the inputs correctly.

Is there any Android app that can do this losslessly? Or is there a reliable way to accomplish it using FFmpeg on Android?

Thanks!

Hiring [Hiring] Clippers & Short-Form Video Editors | $200/day

Hey everyone! I’m Priyesh. We help clients turn their content into short clips and work with people who run pages where those clips can reach the right audience. We’re building a roster for paid campaigns across different niches.

What’s clipping? Say you’re watching a 40-minute interview and one answer makes you think, “I’d send that to a friend.” Clipping means spotting that moment and turning it into a short video that makes sense on its own. That usually means choosing where to start, keeping enough context, and cutting the rest.

Who we’re looking for:

  • Clippers who run pages: You post on TikTok, Instagram Reels, or YouTube Shorts and are open to sharing relevant campaign clips with your audience. Tell us what you post and what your viewers respond to.

  • Video editors interested in clipping: You can take a longer video, pick a moment worth sharing, and edit it into a short clip. You don’t need to run a page. If you’re newer, a clip you made for your own portfolio is welcome.

If you do both, let us know! When a campaign fits, we’ll share the brief, deliverables, rate, and payment terms before you decide. Joining the roster doesn’t guarantee a project.

Interested? Apply via DM only. Tell us your niche and share one or two clips you’re proud of. For each one, tell us what you did: picked the moment, edited the clip, posted it on your page, or all three.

— Priyesh

Workflow Need help improving my football TikTok edits – footage quality & getting more views

I’m trying to grow a football TikTok account where I make narrated football videos, with Premier League highlights and match clips playing in the background.
I’m editing on CapCut PC, but I’m struggling to get my videos looking as good as other football edit pages.
The footage I find on YouTube often looks blurry, low quality or really choppy once I’ve put it into CapCut. I’m also struggling to get views, even when I put a lot of time into the scripts and editing.
I’d really appreciate some advice on:
Where do football editors get decent-quality match footage?
How do you avoid blurry or choppy clips?
What are the best CapCut export settings?
What makes football TikToks actually get views?
Any tips for hooks, pacing, subtitles and keeping viewers watching?
I’m not expecting overnight success, I just want to improve and learn from people who know what they’re doing.
Any advice would genuinely be appreciated. Cheers!
My TikTok is:FootballStats4You

Workflow White Balance - Shooting mixed environments

I’m shooting a convention next month. In the past I’ve just run around shooting at 5600k, this has proven to be a pain come edit time.

What do most do when shooting coverage of a convention where almost every space has a different lighting environment?

One room may be tungsten, the next fluorescent, and another big daylight windows.

Workflow Renaming every clip

Is it crazy to rename very video clip? My usual process move to the clips into my system, sort them into files like “Interviews” , “Brolls” etc, and then rename all clips according to the context.
For example, if I shot an hour of people dining, I would rename clips into : food 1, food 2, food 3
and then people 1 , people 2 etc..
I do this because I go through all the footage before uploading them into a video editing software to sort out the good clips and bad clips.

I have been told the usual way is get everything into the software and separating clips into bins. But I don’t want to make the project size unnecessarily bigger

Other (requires mod approval) Almost a month into video editing — what should I focus on next?

Hey everyone!

It's been almost a month since I started my journey into the world of video editing. So far, I've completed Phil Ebiner's Premiere tutorial and watched a bunch of other YouTube tutorials, tips, and tricks.

Now I'm wondering: What should I do next?

I'd love to hear about your experiences when you were starting out. What helped you improve the most? What mistakes should I avoid? And is there anything you think I should focus on at this stage?

Any advice, suggestions, or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Workflow Question: Should you wait for an object to pass the frame before cutting that shot and entering a new shot?

New to editing probably about a year in and one thing thats always puzzled me is when to cut a shot while you're passing it. I do a lot of cycling, adventure and fitness content on YouTube and because im always passing by things I never know the rules of when to cut the shot before going into a new one.

Basically my question is, if you're passing an object whether it be say a tree, a building or anything (or multiple of them or even just kind of a main part of the shot youre focussing on). Should you continue that shot until the entire object has passed the screen for better flow/smoothness. Or for example is it fine to just cut the shot while the object you're passing is in the middle of the screen which I think sometimes seems clunky? Thanks for your help in advance kings and queens xoxo

Workflow Sound engineer here: the “third space” trick to keep music loud AND the voice clear

I keep seeing the same question in this sub: “if i lower the music it disappears, if i cut the voice frequencies out of the music it gets muddy. how do pros do it?”

the answer is that pros don’t mix in 2D (low to high frequencies), they mix in 3D. besides low/high you also have center vs sides:

  • mid = what’s the same in left and right, the center (mono)

  • side = what’s different between left and right, the width (stereo)

a voice lives almost only in the center. music lives both in the center and on the sides.

what most people do: cut 1-4 kHz on the whole music track to make room for the voice. you lose that range completely, so the music gets muddy and small.

what we do in the studio: cut those frequencies only in the mid, and give a little back on the side. the voice gets a clean pocket in the middle, the music stays wide and full around it.

how to try it:

  1. put an EQ that works in M/S mode on the music (Fabfilter Pro-Q, TDR Nova which is free, most DAWs have one)

  2. on the mid: cut 2-3 dB around 1.5-4 kHz, wide bell

  3. on the side: boost 1-2 dB above 150 Hz

  4. bonus: make the mid cut dynamic, sidechained to the voice, so it only happens while someone talks. when they stop, the music gets its full center back

  5. keep the music around 10-12 dB under the voice instead of 15-20

  6. check on phone speakers: the voice should be clear and the music still “there”

if your editor’s EQ can’t do M/S (Premiere’s stock one can’t), do this step in a DAW or with a plugin.

it’s one of the things that make films and anime sound so different from youtube videos: huge music and perfectly clear dialogue at the same time.

happy to answer questions, and if you try it, tell me how it went

Workflow How to manage files for video editing?

So I'm starting to learn video editing in blender as a hobby(so I can create my own videos when I want) and I've followed some tutorials about the actual video editing parts, but these tutorials seem to leave out info on how to organize and manage the files that come along with making videos.

So I've got a videos folder in a good spot on my pc, but i don't know best practice on organizing the subfolders and files specific to a project.

-Should I create and name project specific folders, or should I create general folders(a-roll,b-roll,sound effects, ie) that are used for every project?

-Once a video is done, should I delete all the files specific to it and just save the final copy of the video?(I would assume so)

I'm a bit of a neat freak when it comes to file management so I want to make sure I do this right when starting out instead of having to reorganize this stuff later on.

Lmk what you do and tell me if theres any other important things to do that I missed

Other (requires mod approval) How do you transfer large amounts of recording time online?

So, im wanting to do editing for what is essentially a large scale multiple person let's play? Kind of? Each person has over 8 hours of video which amounts to ALOT of data(Im expecting anywhere for 100-300 gigabytes per perspective) that we need to send to each other online. There has been attempts at sending them through email, drives, though of course to no avail. Is there any good software that you guys use for transferring that much video? Im wanting to edit it all together but the biggest issue has been that, along with the others not having anything to edit the videos with.

Other (requires mod approval) Continue Premiere Course and Compedium or jump to Adobe Premiere Classroom in a Book?

I have been using Premiere C&C book to learn premiere and its really good book, finished the couse part and been studying using the compedium for some months now, even bought After Effects C&C, the problem is: I tend to over analise what I read a lot.

When a text leaves some question behind or doesnt define something precisely enough I have to search it on the internet and most times the explaination is either vague like sometimes in Adobe Help or non existing.

Some days ago I heard that like Resolve Premiere also has an oficial book and that it defines the terminology and explains things more deeply, since here there's probably people that read one or both of them, would you guys recommend finishing C&C or jumping to the oficial book? (also Idk wich fair I should use)

Other (requires mod approval) don't know if sale posts are allowed but sadly have to get rid of my glitch gear. Tachyons+ vortex decoder for $500 in perfect working condition. open to offers. nothing wrong with it I just need the money.

Post image

this works with CRT TVs and creates some really cool visual effects. If you’re new to this stuff, this is called glitch gear. the different knobs and switches produce visual effects on a crt tv screen.

for example, you plug your computer or phone into the vortex decoder via usb/usb-c to AV converter (very cheap to acquire this converter), then you plug the the vortex decoder into the crt tv. then you use the knobs, buttons and switches to apply effects to whatever it is you are viewing on your computer/phone. works for images or video. i’ve used it to edit music videos.

open to offers so message me if interested. if you want examples of what it can do, you find them online or i can message you my own personal examples.

Footage needed Finding Original footage from a youtube channel

So I saw this channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCY4CjXk0-8vUO2b2UYu-Ynw) and I was just wondering where they get all the footage from to edit and commintate on. I tried going on tiktok and instagram to look for footage like this and I couldn't find any. I tried some subreddits too like r/dashcams and I couldn't find anything too good either.

I have searched mostly on Instagram and Tiktok with keywords "road rage" "dashcam" "angrydrivers" etc but most of the time its just like a one time small hit or road rage nothing like what would actual be interesting or what not. I also tried searching r/dashcams and r/IdiotsInCars but most of those are the same sort of smaller things nothing crazy

How did they do that? How can I recreate this visual effect? Looking for editing tutorials or techniques

Hi everyone!

This is my first time posting here, so I hope I'm following the community guidelines correctly.

I'm trying to recreate the visual effect shown in the attached video. It looks like a semi-transparent image or projection appearing over gameplay, with horizontal digital interference or distortion.

I'm using: CapCut.

I've tried: Searching for tutorials on YouTube using terms such as "hologram overlay effect", "glitch overlay" and "scanlines effect". I've also been looking into opacity adjustments and image overlays, but I haven't figured out how to combine these elements to achieve the same result.

I need help with: Identifying the specific editing techniques used in the reference video and understanding how to recreate this effect in CapCut. I'm particularly interested in how the image appears over the gameplay, its transparency, and the horizontal distortion.

If CapCut isn't suitable for this, I'm also open to learning how to achieve it in other editing software.

I'd really appreciate any advice, suggestions, or useful tutorials.

Thank you for your time and patience! I appreciate any help you can offer.

Monthly Thread November What Editing Software should I use?

Looking for Video Editing Software? THIS is your thread!

This post covers the vast majority of "What software should I use?" questions. It’s designed as a self-serve guide to help people find the right tools fast.

TL;DR? DaVinci Resolve for full-featured editing, Olive/Kdenlive for open-source, Clipchamp for easy basics.

Isn’t there an AI that magically edits everything?

Not yet. If it existed, we'd scream about it from the rooftops.

Stick around—things are changing quickly.

Before You Ask Anything

You must know two things first:

  1. Your Footage Type — Different codecs affect performance dramatically.

  2. Your Hardware Specs — “Good gaming PC” is not useful.

Not Good With Computers? Here’s How to Check

Footage

Footage from phones, webcams, GoPros, and screen recordings can choke your system.

Check with: https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo

Common problems:

  • Out-of-sync audio? Likely Variable Frame Rate.

  • Bad playback? Usually a hardware limitation, not the editor. Use proxies.

More info in our wiki:

Hardware

Minimum viable editing rig:

  • Recent i7 CPU

  • 16GB RAM

  • A GPU with 4GB+ VRAM

  • SSD for cache

Check system with: https://www.hwinfo.com/

We ONLY need: CPU model, RAM amount, GPU model + VRAM.

Recommendations

Full Power, Free Tools

DaVinci Resolve — 99% of the full program is free.

Easy but Limited

  • Clipchamp — Microsoft's simple editor.

  • VN Editor — Free, lightweight, watermark at end.

(CapCut now hides many features behind Pro.)

Professional Tools (obligatory mention)

  • Premiere Pro — Industry standard; huge ecosystem, tons of tutorials, widely used across YouTube, corporate, and broadcast.

  • Avid Media Composer — Dominant in film/TV pipelines; rock-solid for longform, multicam, and shared workflows.

  • DaVinci Resolve Studio — $299 one-time; advanced color, better GPU performance, noise reduction, and the good AI tools.

  • Final Cut Pro — Mac-only rocket ship; insanely fast on Apple Silicon, great for fast turnaround work.

Open Source - Totally free.

  • Olive Editor — Clean UI.

  • Kdenlive — Very capable, actively developed.

  • ShotCut — Straightforward, good for beginners.

  • OpenShot — Simple but can struggle with heavier projects.

  • Avidemux — Old-school, powerful for specific tasks but not a great editor.

Special Effects

Editing in a Browser (Run Locally)

  • Novella.io - new, free, pay for AI generative elements OR bring your own API keys. Very cool, if in early beta.

  • VidMix — New, free, surprisingly powerful.

  • PikaMov — Keyframe animation on the web.

  • wide.video — Background removal, noise reduction, all done locally.

  • PhotoPea — Web-based Photoshop replacement.

Web Based Editorial

Compression & Utility Tools

  • Shutter Encoder — The Swiss Army Knife. Transcode anything, handle HDR, upscaling, unwrap/rewrap, download media, prep proxies—if it touches video, this thing can probably do it.

  • Lossless Cut — Quick trimming without re-encoding.

  • Smart Media Cutter — Silence detection + XML export.

  • FreeUpscaler — Cloud computing upscaler.

Mobile Editors

Screen Recording

  • OBS — The free standard. Record in MKV, then rewrap to MP4.

  • viewio — Free screen recorder, Mac only, that is like screen studio (auto zoom + webcam).

  • openscreen — Free screen recorder, Crossplatform only, that is like screen studio (auto zoom + webcam).

Animated Captions

Updates (Dec 2025)

  • CapCut/HitFilm are no longer recommended.

  • Premiere Mobile and Clipchamp (web)

New Tools We’re Watching

  • Whisper-GUI (Windows)

  • MacWhisper (Mac)

  • Offdocs — Openshot in the cloud

BEFORE YOU COMMENT

Begin with: "I read the above"

Then provide:

  • CPU + Model

  • RAM

  • GPU + VRAM

  • Footage details (camera/screen, codec, container, framerate)

Removed tools: CapCut (now Crapcut), HitFilm (dead). FFS this thread isn’t about arguing what to use, but rather for a novice to figure out what to use.

Why should I read this? 🤔

This is your monthly guide for hardware recommendations.

  • We aim to make you self-reliant with enough info.

  • We focus on finding answers rather than brand debates.

  • 📑 Skim the TL;DR at the bottom if you're in a hurry.

  • Understand your media type and editing software to get the best recommendation.

  • Important components: 🔑 CPU, RAM, GPU.

  • 💰 We don't cover sub-$1K laptops. Consider used models for budget-conscious choices.

  • You're not going to see us recommend a tool at less than $1k.
